Cannes: Sean Bean to Star in Jason Bourque's Action-Thriller 'Drone'
Myriad Pictures is introducing the film to buyers in this week, with deals already closed for the U.K., Italy, the Middle East and the former Yugoslavia.
Sean Bean is set to pilot in Jason Bourque's action thriller film Drone.
Myriad Pictures will handle worldwide sales, excluding Canada, for the film that will co-star Patrick Sabongui (300, Godzilla).
Written by Bourque (Black Fly) and Paul Birkett, Drone is a ripped-from-the headlines story about Neil (Bean), a high-level private drone contractor who spends his workdays flying covert missions then returns to a family life of suburban mediocrity. Not even Neil’s wife or his son know about his secret life. But Neil's juggling act of husband, father and armchair warrior comes to a crashing halt when a whistle-blowing site exposes him to a deadly threat. Believing Neil is responsible for the deaths of his wife and child, an enigmatic Pakistani businessman (Sabongui) has tracked him down. A harrowing confrontation takes place in Neil's house and it proves to be far more complex than a simple act of revenge.
Myriad Pictures is introducing the film to buyers in Cannes this week. Deals have already been closed with Signature Entertainment in the U.K., Minerva in Italy, Eagle Films in the Middle East and Dexin Films in the former Yugoslavia.
The film starts shooting this week in India and then moves to Vancouver.
Pacific Northwest Pictures has Canadian rights and will distribute the film theatrically and in all media there. The film is being produced by Sefton Fincham (Catch .44, A Single Shot) and Ken Frith (Black Fly), and will be produced by Look to the Sky Films and co-produced by Gold Star Productions. The film will be executive produced by Mike Rowe, Levi Sheck, and Media House Capital's Ross Mrazek and Ben Rappaport.
Borque, a hot up-and-coming Canadian helmer, has visited the subject of drones before. He directed the drone-themed documentary Shadow Company, which was narrated by Gerard Butler.
“We think that Sean Bean is the perfect actor for this leading role and that Jason Bourque will do a great job directing this compelling material which ultimately addresses issues of justice and human values around the world,” Myriad president Kirk D’Amico said.
Kevin Forester and Audrey Delaney negotiated the deal on behalf of Myriad. Producer Sefton Fincham repped the filmmakers.

Sean Bean Starring in Drone
Bean will headlining Jason Bourque’s political thriller.
It looks like Sean Bean has come back to life again.
The mighty Bean, who has a notorious history of his character being killed off in many of the TV series and films he has starred in, is being reanimated for the high-suspense thriller, Drone.
Written and directed by Jason Bourque (Black Fly) and co-written by Paul Birkett, Drone hovers over the double life of Neil (Bean), an elite private drone contractor. He flies top-secret missions by day and then returns to his unknowing family under the guise of an average suburbanite. He is able to keep his dual identities under wraps, until his life thrown into major peril after being exposed by a whistleblowing site.
Neil then finds himself stalked by a mysterious and relentless businessman (Patrick Sabongui) who believes the drone operator murdered his wife and child. He follows Neil with what at first seems like a thirst for vengeance, but whose motive has many more facets than just revenge. Expect an explosive confrontation when they finally face each other.
Shooting for Drone will start this week in India and eventually move to Vancouver. Myriad Pictures plans to introduce the film at Cannes this week. This isn’t Borque’s first brush with drones; he previously directed Shadow Company, a documentary on the futuristic flying machines.
The big question, of course, is will Sean Bean survive this one? The odds are rarely that great...

Look To the Sky Films upcoming movie “Drone” has officially left Pre-Production and begun filming of controversial opening scenes in Mumbai, India. Below is a small but hopefully intriguing behind the scenes look at what’s just around the corner.
The locations are overflowing with character and are a perfect match to Karachi. Overall I’m seeing excellent production value with an authentic cast. The upcoming political thriller Drone has expanded its ranks, with Mary McCormack and Joel David Moore joining the cast. The Myriad Pictures film stars Sean Bean along with Patrick Sabongui and follows Neil (Bean), a high-level private drone contractor who divides his time between his work flying covert drone missions and suburban family life. His worlds collide when a leak causes a Pakistani businessman (Sabongui) to believe Neil is responsible for the death of his family, sparking a tense confrontation in Neil’s house. McCormack plays Neil’s wife, Ellen, while Moore portrays Neil’s colleague, Gary.
Directed by Jason Bourque from a script he co-wrote with Paul A. Birkett, Drone is currently filming in Vancouver. It’s produced by Sefton Fincham and Ken Frith and co-produced by Matthew Schmidt and Dean Buchanan. Myriad’s Kirk D’Amico and PNP’s Emily Alden executive produce alongside Mike Rowe, Levi Sheck, Media House Capital’s Ross Mrazek and Ben Rappaport.

'Temple', 'Drone', 'The Titan' among Signature's Cannes deals
UK distributor Signature Entertainment has revealed five all rights acquisitions secured at the Cannes Film Festival
A further deal has been done with Myriad Pictures for Jason Bourque’s Drone, which stars Sean Bean (Troy) as an elite drone contractor who is exposed by a whistleblower. It will be released in 2017.

Drone (aka Incursion) (Feature)
Drone, also known as Incursion, is an indie political thriller starring Sean Bean (Lord of the Rings Series). If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, you’ll also know Sean from his portrayal of the beloved Ned Stark. Other notable cast includes Mary McCormack (In Plain Sight), Joel David Moore (Bones, Avatar), Patrick Sabongui (The Flash) and up-and-comer Maxwell Haynes.
Drone was written by Jason Bourque, Ian Birkett, Paul A. Birkett and Roger Patterson for Telefilm and Myriad Pictures. It centres around an unlikely meeting between a military drone contractor and a Pakistani businessman.
Drone will be filming in Vancouver and British Columbia until June 25th.

I always smile when I see Sean wearing a tie. I don't think he likes them very much because even when he starts off with the top button done and the tie cinched up, it seems like always at some point ... he gives it a good yank. It's quite noticeable when you go through photos of the red carpet events he's been photographed at.

DRONE filming has officially wrapped!
As of Saturday, June 25th, Look To The Sky Films and GoldStar Productions officially finished filming of “Drone”. The political thriller starring Sean Bean, Mary McCormack, Joel David Moore, and Patrick Sabongui shot for 21 days in Langley, British Columbia with 5 days on location in Mumbai, India.
Post Production is schedule for completion mid to late July.
Director Jason Bourque and Producer Sefton Fincham are extremely pleased by the emotional depth and breadth of story captured on camera.

Transition from 'Minar of Mosque' to the character's walking on road it was very difficult to keep in flow.. somehow I managed in 4 attempts but it's not that great.
Let see how they are gonna use this in their movie. While shoot I was running out of batteries n natural light..

Picture lock is a stage in editing a film or editing a television production. It is the stage prior to online editing when all changes to the film or television program cut have been done and approved. It is then sent to subsequent stages in the process, such as online editing and audio mixing. Any last minute changes can force portions of subsequent work to be redone.

Sean Bean Operates a ‘Drone’ in First Trailer for Military Thriller
“What’s topical right now?,” a frenzied studio executive says. “DRONES!,” an intern screams. Just like that, so comes the first trailer for Drone, a thriller led by the forever-dying-on-screen Sean Bean as the operator of the titular death-dealing machine, Neil, whose world is spun around when a man whose wife and son were killed in a drone strike shows up for dinner. As tension mounts, Neil must try to keep his occupation a secret and his family safe.
The most problematic aspect of this trailer is that the man who shows up seems to threaten Neil and his family with a bomb, which seems like a xenophobic assertion and oversimplification of the grief felt by those impacted from U.S. military action. With the film arriving next month, we’ll see if it can upend those expectations soon. See the trailer below with a nod to FirstShowing.

Drone Trailer Places Sean Bean In Control Of An Ideological Missile
Sean Bean stars in Drone, the new military thriller from director and co-writer Jason Bourque which sees the actor playing Neil, the blank-faced operator of a deadly drone that drops bombs in the Middle East.
As shown in the newly released trailer, Neil is a private drone contractor who appears callous in his destructive missions overseas, only to return to his family to live out a familiar suburban life with his wife and son. The movie itself is about Neil facing the unexpected consequences of his actions when a Pakistani businessman (played by Patrick Sabongui) shows up on his doorstep with a briefcase and perhaps some bad intentions.
From there, Drone checks off the list of quick cuts and rapid escalation that you’d expect from a psychological thriller, but it’s made even more poignant and uncomfortable by how increasingly relevant this topic has become in lieu of recent events (there’s even a whistleblowing, WikiLeaks-esque factor). For that reason, audiences will likely be split on the implications of a film that appears to position the victims of American drone attacks in outlandish ways that might fuel xenophobia. Or they might just enjoy the movie as a commentary on American foreign policy dating back the last 8 years.
Either way, Drone appears to be an explosive indie that will have many people talking, for better or worse, about issues that continue to be massively polarizing in the US and abroad. It’s not clear yet how its controversial subject matter will impact its critical reception and box office business, but we’ll know soon enough as it premieres on April 17 at the Vancouver Film Festival. For the rest of us, Drone will open for a wider release on May 26.

Watched it last night - acting was good, had potential to be much better though. Lacking a lot of content and it kind of lingered around dialogue that didn't really advance the story much. Very slow to get started and by the time the story had finally gotten tense the main action happens in the last 10 min and then it is over. :-( It needed to be like 45 minutes longer and add a lot more content.

A week after Jason Bourque’s spirits soared as high as the unmanned aircraft featured in Drone, his new movie that just made its U.S. debut, he is finally starting to feel Earthbound again. Calling from Las Vegas, where he is on vacation after spending four months in Qatar shooting episodes of Medinah, an Arabic-English sci-fi series, the Victoria-raised filmmaker said his giddiness was justified. “It’s been surreal,” said Bourque, whose slick, provocative thriller was the No. 1 indie feature on iTunes for a time last weekend. It also shared space on big-city movie marquees with Baywatch and Alien: Covenant. “Aliens, bikinis and us,” noted Screen Media Films in a Twitter post featuring a photograph of Drone’s prominent position on the marquee at New York’s Village East City Cinemas. Bourque, 44, was also elated that the first review of his Telefilm-funded movie was from the New York Times, which called it “a modest, proficient thriller.” He credits his star, Sean Bean, for generating unexpected attention for what he describes as a Canadian independent drama and character study in the guise of a Hollywood-type thriller. “We didn’t do that on purpose,” Bourque said with a laugh. The University of Victoria Fine Arts graduate gained experience making short films and music videos here before his filmmaking career took off. Bean, best known for his roles in the TV series Sharpe and Game of Thrones, and the movies Patriot Games, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and Troy, plays Neil, an alcoholic American drone pilot. His wife (Mary McCormack) and son (Maxwell Haynes) believe he is an IT specialist, unaware that he has been secretly contracted by the CIA to fly covert drone missions overseas from his home in Washington state. He is forced to face the consequences of his actions when Imir (Patrick Sabongui), a polite but mysterious businessman from Pakistan, shows up at their suburban home.
“We’re so used to seeing Sean play these bigger-than-life characters, where you see him with a sword or a machine-gun, the villain or the tough guy in so many huge Hollywood movies,” Bourque said. The British actor was a fan of Bourque’s 2015 backwoods thriller Black Fly. Bean also liked the Drone script Bourque co-wrote with Paul Birkett, based on a story Birkett wrote with his brother Ian, and Roger Patterson. “Sean said he wanted to do something that was more like a play, and to play a character he hadn’t done before,” recalled Bourque, who soon learned why so many directors love working with the actor. “Everything was internalized, and then he’d have these incredible bursts of emotion. He’s very instinctual with his choices, quiet and contemplative on set, and very giving.” Beautifully photographed by Vancouver-based twins Nelson and Graham Talbot, Drone is both a visually stunning depiction of remote-controlled warfare overseas and a contained drama on the homefront. Bourque said filming on a shoestring and a tight schedule last summer — 15 days in West Vancouver and Langley, and three days in a town near Mumbai — was an adventure in itself. “We were shooting off-the-grid, in this incredible town in India, where there was a river of garbage, so deep that dogs could walk on it, that ran through the centre of it,” he recalled. “We blew stuff up. Shooting in India gave the film the additional scope Bourque wanted “as opposed to it looking like we shot it all in Maple Ridge, like a TV movie,” he said with a laugh.
They teamed up with model-builder Eamon Jones, with whom Bourque once worked at the former That’s Entertainment video store on Yates Street, to build the drone model in Jones’s living room. While drone warfare and surveillance have been addressed onscreen before, notably in last year’s Eye in the Sky, Bourque said Drone’s timely focus on private contractors sets it apart. “Drone is very much ripped from the headlines,” he said, referring to a Wall Street Journal story about U.S. President Donald Trump giving the CIA the authority to conduct its own drone strikes. Bourque has explored the role of private contractors before, in Shadow Company, his documentary about private military companies, and a film about former U.S. National Security Agency contractor and whistleblower Edward Snowdon that he had to abandon. “Whistleblowers, data leaks — anything along those lines I’m fascinated with,” said Bourque, who acknowledged that Drone is “not a completely American-friendly movie” based on mixed reviews stateside. He said he was particularly intrigued by a drone’s chilling surveillance potential — a development that sparks dramatic tension when Imir spies on the family and uncovers secrets. “The overall scope was to have a psychological drone-strike on an American family,” said Bourque, describing the impact on Neil’s wife and son as “emotional collatoral damage.” Drone, about to be rolled out internationally, has already paid dividends for Bourque, such as being hired to work on Medinah, the Qatari series featuring talent from 20 countries. “It was a good time,” said Bourque who, ironically, is editing his Medinah episodes remotely.

Nominees for the Leo Awards – which recognize on-screen and behind-the-camera excellence in the British Columbia film and television sphere and are handed out over several splashy ceremonies each May and June – were posted overnight to the Leo Awards web site.
In the Motion Picture category, Dead Shack – a cabin-in-the-woods horror film from Peter Ricq (Freaktown) – is the top contender with 12 nominations, followed closely by homeschooling-gone-sideways comedy Adventures in Public School with 10,
and critically acclaimed drama Drone with seven, including Best Lead Performance by a Male in a Motion Picture for Patrick Sabongui.
