Sean Bean & Malachi Kirby Team Up For ‘Fast And The Furious’-Style Drama
Quote
Game of Thrones star Sean Bean and Roots star Malachi Kirby are among the big names attached to Sky’s Fast and the Furious-style drama Curfew as the British broadcaster continues to drip out programming announcements.

The eight-part drama, which follows the story of ordinary people competing in the world’s fastest, most furious, illegal night-time street race, is produced by Tiger Aspect Productions and Moonage Picturs, the indie set up by Peaky Blinders execs Will Gould, Matthew Read and Frith Tiplady.

The series, which was written by Read, will see contestants race through the night from London to Scotland in their “pimped-out” vehicles to win the ultimate prize — freedom from the totalitarian government curfew that controls their lives.

Adrian Lester (Riviera), Phoebe Fox (Blue Iguana) Robert Glenister (Spooks), Aimee-Ffion Edwards (Troy: Fall of a City), Rose Williams (Reign), Elijah Rowen (Vikings) and Guz Khan (Man Like Mobeen) also star in the series, directed by Peaky Blinders’  Colm McCarthy.

Commissioned by Sky’s Head of Drama Anne Mensah, the series will air on Sky One and will be exec produced by Gould and Tiplady. Sky Vision will distribute internationally.

Mensah said: “When Sky does dramas about car races, we do them like no other broadcaster. Funny, emotionally truthful, visceral and above all fast – Curfew is the perfect Sky One show. Matthew Read has created fantastically memorable, sometimes shocking, always fascinating characters. You’ll want every single one of them to win the race of their lives.”

Read added: “Sky have been incredibly supportive throughout the development of such a bold and ambitious show and I couldn’t be more pleased by the creative team that has been assembled to deliver a story that we have filled with as much excitement, emotion and dynamism as possible.”

Sean Bean to Star in Sky Street Racing Drama ‘Curfew’
Quote
European pay-TV giant Sky has ordered “Curfew,” a full-throttle U.K. original set in the world of street racing. The car racers will compete in customized and weaponized vehicles as they race across the U.K. in an attempt to escape the control of a totalitarian government.

Endemol Shine’s Tiger Aspect is producing alongside fledgling U.K. drama banner Moonage. The 8-parter will launch on Sky and the satcaster’s NOW TV streaming service.

Each of the challengers in the illegal races are, the producers said, drawn to the dangerous world of racing for their own, desperate, reasons. Sean Bean (“Game of Thrones”) will star alongside Adrian Lester (“Riviera”), Phoebe Fox (“Blue Iguana”), and Malachi Kirby (“Roots”).

Matthew Read (“Hammer of the Gods”) created the show. The cast also includes Robert Glenister (“Spooks”), Aimee-Ffion Edwards (“Peaky Blinders”), Rose Williams (“Reign”), Elijah Rowen (“Vikings”), and Guz Khan (“Borderline”).

For every great thing he does, there are always stinkers with it lol.

Army TANKS spotted driving around Liverpool city centre - here's why
A huge armoured fleet has been seen with a blue McLaren 570 GT
Quote
There are tanks, emergency service vehicles and supercars performing stunts in the city centre today.

One huge eight-wheeled armoured vehicle was seen driving down Water Street with the Liver Building looming large in the background.

Other metal plated vehicles were seen driving alongside a blue McLaren 570 GT on Rumford Street while they were being filmed for a new Sky TV drama show Curfew - due to come out next year.

The TV series is being hailed as “an exhilarating new street race drama” which sees an ensemble cast including Sean Bean (Broken, Game of Thrones), Adrian Lester (Riviera, Hustle), Phoebe Fox (Blue Iguana, Intrigo: Samaria), and Malachi Kirby (Black Mirror, Roots) going head to head in an ultimate contest.

The eight-part series follows the story of ordinary people competing in the world’s fastest, most furious, illegal night-time street race.

Desperate for their own reasons, the challengers risk everything as they race through the night from London to northernmost Scotland in their pimped-out, weaponised vehicles to win the ultimate prize — freedom from the totalitarian government curfew that controls their lives.

In the city today stunts for the show are being filmed by people riding motorbikes in front of the action and driving a Mini Cooper with no roof, both with cameras attached to the frames of the vehicles.

The tank driving down Water Street had missiles attached to the top of it and crews at the scene said special effects would be being used at some point today.

Filming of a new Sky TV drama featuring Game Of Thrones star Sean Bean will take place in Crewe this week.

Sets have been built and letters sent out to residents to highlight the filming of new series, Curfew.

Filming will take place in and around the bus station and on Charles Street from 6pm today (March 21) to 5.30am tomorrow, and again from 5pm tomorrow to 4.30am on Friday March 23.

Top stars including Bean, Adrian Lester, Robert Glenister, Phoebe Fox and Malachi Kirby star in the series which sees contestants going head to head in the ultimate contest.

Workers on the set have also been tweeting about it (pictured) and a letter to residents warns people of powerful lighting being used during filming, as well as loud special effects gunfire.

“Please do not be alarmed when this occurs,” states the letter, from production company Tiger Aspect Productions.

“We have two Cheshire Police officers with us to help liaise with the public to allay any fears.”

Cherry pickers have been positioned in Delamere Street and behind Vernon’s fish and chip ship to film the action.

Night scenes will also involve some stunt driving, with Charles Street and part of Victoria Street closed to vehicles and pedestrians.

“Along with Cheshire Police, we will also be liaising with Creative England, Crewe Film Office and Crewe Town Council/Cheshire East Highways regarding our intentions,” adds the letter

“We will be employing the services of a reputable traffic management company to implement all road closures and diversions.

“Location filming cannot work without the ongoing support of local residents and businesses and for this we are indebted to you.”

The eight-part Sky production is scheduled to be screened on Sky One and TV streaming service NOW TV next year.

It follows the story of ordinary people competing in the world’s fastest, most furious, illegal night-time street race.

Challengers risk everything as they race through the night from London to northernmost Scotland in their pimped-out, weaponised vehicles to win the ultimate prize — freedom from the totalitarian government curfew that controls their lives.

Sky’s head of drama Anne Mensah said: “When Sky does dramas about car races, we do them like no other broadcaster.

Matthew Read, executive producer and writer, said: “Sky have been incredibly supportive throughout the development of such a bold and ambitious show and I couldn’t be more pleased by the creative team that has been assembled to deliver a story that we have filled with as much excitement, emotion and dynamism as possible.”

Former GOT star Sean Bean swaps Westeros for Crewe as shooting gets underway for new street racing series Curfew
Quote
He known for his role as the honorable Ned Stark, once Lord of Winterfell, in the smash hit HBO series Games of Thrones.

And now moving away from his former Westeros, Sean Bean has his sights firmly focused on his new TV project, Curfew, as he was pictured on set in Crewe in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The acclaimed 58-year-old actor was seen clad in a Barbour-style jacket while holding on to a pistol as shooting kicked-off for the new Sky drama, which is set in the illegal world of street-racing.

Holding the gun menacingly, Sean's character kept a low-profile alongside a white sports car while he covered his hair with a flat cap.

Inbetween scenes, The Field actor looked relaxed as crew milled around the set fixing the lighting and setting up the next shot.

Bean and his co-stars Adrian Lester, Robert Glenister, Phoebe Fox and Malachi Kirby have been in South Cheshire for two days and nights filming scenes from the new series due on Sky One.

Local photographers flocked to the area of the town centre cordoned off by film crews close to the Bus Station, Charles Street and Victoria Street where scenes were shot.

The drama series sees contestants going head to head in the ultimate driving contest.

There's A Huge Warner Bros Show Being Made In Manchester With Car Chases
Quote
A Manchester Street is set to feature in a new TV epic, starring Game of Thrones actor Sean Bean.

Byrom Street in Manchester’s Spinningfields was transformed on Thursday night, to make way for filming for Sky One’s new drama show, Curfew.

The eight-part series follows the story of a group of people competing in an illegal night-time street race.

The busy road, near Quay Street, was cordoned off between 6pm on Thursday 22 until 6am on Friday 23 March, as crew members set up for the filming of a ‘car chase’ scene

A Warner Brothers truck was spotted on the scene on Thursday afternoon, as well officers from Greater Manchester Police. At 7:30pm on Thursday, huge lights were fitted at either end of Byrom Street.

Curfew has been described as a cross between Mad Max and Fast and the Furious, and scenes filmed in Manchester will feature ‘fast’ car stunts, performed by professional stuntmen.

THIS is why a car was flipped on its roof near the tunnel entrance today
Quote
Drivers passing through the Birkenhead Tunnel this morning might have spotted a supercar flipped on its roof... but don’t worry - it’s all part of filming for a TV show.

An overturned black car could be seen in the middle of a row of trashed market stalls, with smashed crates and flowers strewn across the floor.

Commuters spotted the upturned vehicle in a closed car park on Dale Street in Liverpool city centre , near the entrance to the Birkenhead Tunnel.

The unusual sights are believed to be part of filming for a new Sky series called Curfew, which is due out next year.

ECHO photographer Andy Teebay captured these dramatic pictures of the super-car flipped on its roof, surrounded by wrecked market stalls which scattered goods littering the floor.

The photos show crates strewn across the car park, with fruit, vegetables and flowers also thrown across the market in the carnage of the ‘crash’.

Sky series Curfew has already been spotted filming in the city centre, with tanks and other supercars seen whizzing through the city centre’s streets.

Last month, tanks, emergency service vehicles and supercars were snapped performing stunts near Old Hall Street, with one huge eight-wheeled armoured vehicle seen driving down Water Street with the Liver Building looming large in the background.
Other metal plated vehicles were seen driving alongside a blue McLaren 570 GT on Rumford Street while they were being filmed for the new TV drama - due to come out next year.

The Sky Original Production, from Tiger Aspect in association with Moonage Pictures, will be available on Sky One and TV streaming service NOW TV next year.

Billy Zane, Miranda Richardson Join Sky’s Street-Racing Drama ‘Curfew’
Harriet Walter, Michael Biehn also set to star alongside Sean Bean
Quote
Billy Zane (“Titanic”) is among several new names getting behind the wheel for Sky’s high-octane futuristic drama “Curfew.” Miranda Richardson (“Churchill”), Harriet Walter (“The Crown”), and Michael Biehn (“Aliens”) will also buckle up for the series, which follows a cast of characters competing in the world’s fastest illegal nighttime street race.

“Joining the immensely talented cast and crew of ‘Curfew’ as Joker Jones fulfills many cinematic and literary fantasies all at once,” Zane said. “Playing a gonzo cowboy, member of a viral video performance art troupe, on a healing hell-ride, just about falls square in my wheelhouse right now.”

Richardson will play Lou, a character she described as “kind, tough, brave, practical and romantic.” She added: “A childhood of soaking up Westerns has finally paid off, except that the horses are replaced by cars.”

Sean Bean, Adrian Lester, Phoebe Fox, and Malachi Kirby are among those already cast in the series, which hails from Endemol Shine’s Tiger Aspect and fledgling British drama banner Moonage.

The eight-part series will bow on Sky One in the U.K., and Sky’s TV streaming service NOW TV, in 2019. It was written by Matthew Read (“Pusher”) and is directed by Colm McCarthy (“Peaky Blinders”). Sky’s content and distribution arm Sky Vision is selling it internationally.

Billy Zane pictured for first time in Curfew - as Miranda Richardson and Michael Biehn join all-star cast in Manchester
Quote
Hollywood star Billy Zane has been pictured for the first time in character in futuristic drama Curfew which is filming in Manchester with an all-star cast.

Titanic star Billy is seen in his “gonzo cowboy” fashion as the character of Joker Jones in the Sky One drama that will follow competitors in a furious illegal night-time street race.

He joins a stellar cast list which also includes Churchill star Miranda Richardson, Game of Thrones star Sean Bean, Atonement’s Harriet Walter and Terminator and Aliens legend Michael Biehn in the Sky original production.

Cast and crew have been spotted filming across the city in recent weeks, with a host of unusual cars seen parked up around the Northern Quarter for night-time scenes filmed around Ducie Street and what is set to be a truly exhiliarting chase down Piccadilly’s infamous steep cobbled Jutland Street.

Billy Zane said of his new role: “Joining the immensely talented cast and crew of Curfew as Joker Jones fulfils many cinematic and literary fantasies all at once.

“Playing a gonzo cowboy, member of a viral video performance art troupe, on a healing hell-ride, just about falls square in my wheelhouse right now.”

Miranda Richardson also joined filming this week and said: “A childhood of soaking up westerns has finally paid off, except that the horses are replaced by cars! I’m feeling lucky to be interpreting Matthew Read’s Lou: kind, tough, brave, practical and romantic, someone you definitely want on your team.

“All this and the chance to drive two wildly different vehicles. Curfew is covering a lot of new ground for me which is always fun. Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy ride!”

Sean Bean drama filmed on major borough road
Quote
One of the borough’s biggest roads will close for three nights as BBC crews film the latest prime-time drama. The eight-episode series “Curfew” boasts a star-studded cast with celebrated English actors Sean Bean, Miranda Richardson and Billy Zane. East Lancs Road will be closed in Lowton between the junction of Newton Road and the A579 on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night from 8pm to 6am. A letter sent to Lowton residents from Tiger Aspect Drama Ltd says: “As our scenes here are set during the hours of darkness, we plan to film throughout the night, out of peak times. “Our filming here will involve stunt driving. For reasons of safety we have been provisionally granted permission to put into place a road and footpath closure on a specific section of the A580.”Curfew, which is set in a “near-future” environment, will follow the duration of a streetcar race. The eight-part drama will represent one long night in which the winner of the race must reach the finish line by sunrise.

A synopsis included in the letter adds: “At night in this world, the shutters come down, the streets are cleared and a curfew is enforced. “A virus is turning citizens into deadly creatures and the only hope of escaping this society is to win the race.”

Some residents have taken to social media to raise concerns about the level of noise that could be generated by the stunt drivers and additional props. James Grundy wrote: “What consideration or consultation has taken place with residents affected? If not, why not? They are prepared to magnanimously offer earplugs for any adversely affected residents.”Another disgruntled resident, Colin Savage, added: “So they can apply for, and be granted closure of a major UK trunk road for three consecutive nights, to make whatever noise or disturbance they need, and no one even bothers to consider the residents. “But they have offered “earplugs”. I think someone is going to be paying hotel fees if this happens.”

Film crews have assured residents that they have scheduled the “noisier scenes” for earlier in the evening to lessen the impact. “We would also like to draw your attention to the use of a prop firearm,” added the location manager Danny Newton. “Several of the scenes scripted here involve the use of a prop gun. “Use of these replica firearms is overseen at all times by a fully qualified armourer. “Whilst we appreciate our presence may have some impact on the local community, please be assured that we are working tirelessly to minimise any disruption as much as possible.” Mark Tilley, Wigan Council’s assistant director for infrastructure, said: “The council was pleased to be able to support the filming of this major TV series in the borough and shows how we are supportive of the creative arts and the film industry.

“The road closures are planned to minimise disruption and the production company have written to nearby residents outlining the activity that is taking place and reassuring them about measures in place.“In terms of road closures the A580 East Lancashire will be closed between the junctions of the A572 Newton Road and the A579 Atherleigh Way in both directions from Monday 7th May to Friday 11th May between 8pm and 6am. “A manned road closure will be implemented with diversion routes clearly sign posted. The diversion route is A572 Newton Road/A579 Atherleigh Way.” Anyone with concerns can contact the filming office on 0161 850 9585 or email locsdept@gmail.com

Filming of street-racing drama with stunt driving and special effects starring Sean Bean set to take place on East Lancashire Road
Quote
FILMING on a new street racing TV drama starring Sean Bean is set to take place in the borough next week.

The East Lancashire Road between the junction of Newton Road in Lowton and the Atherleigh Way in Leigh will be closed for three nights from Monday where stunt driving and special effects will be carried out.

The show that will be filmed, called Curfew, is a near-future eight-part Sky One drama set over one long night.

It involves a virus turning people into deadly creatures and the only hope of escaping the society is to win a race.

A camera drone will be used to capture the fast-paced action of the vehicles involved in the scenes which will take place in several sequences.

There will also be a prop gun used in the filming which will be supervised by a fully qualified armourer and two Greater Manchester Police officers.

Closures will be in place each night from Monday to Wednesday from 8pm to 6am the following morning.

Sky drama Curfew takes over Formby beach as stars spotted filming scenes
Quote
Actors were spotted in Freshfield Dunes shooting scenes for TV show Curfew

The show stars Billy Zane, Sean Bean and Miranda Richardson, alongside others, and centres around the world of street racing.

The car racers will compete in customised and weaponised vehicles as they race across the Britain in an attempt to escape the control of a totalitarian government.

The challengers in the illegal races are each drawn to the dangerous world of racing for their own desperate reasons, the producers said.

The eight part series will air on Sky and NOW TV.

Yesterday Malachi Kirby - previously seen in Roots - was spotted on set hiding out in a beach shack caravan getaway.

Retro cars were also spotted alongside the themed shack - likely to be one of the customised cars used in the show.

Speaking of the new venture, Sky's head of drama Anne Mensah said: "Funny, emotionally truthful, visceral and above all fast – Curfew is the perfect Sky One show.

Filming for new street racing film Curfew taking place at Beacon Fell
Quote
Anyone visiting Beacon Fell may be finding a rather clapped out petrol station in one of the country park’s car parks.

A new feature-length film Curfew is being shot by Tiger Aspect Productions.

Starring Sean Bean, Billy Zane, Adrian Lester, Phoebe Fox and Malachi Kirby it’s set in the world of street racing.

Some very unusual vehicles have been seen around the country lanes of Beacon Fell during the filming.

Due to be shown on Sky TV the film is due to air in January next year.

A spokesman for Beacon Fell said: “The filming is mainly at night and there are restrictions on vehicle access at certain times.

“If people wish to have a look that is fine but the producers have asked visitors to be respectful and cooperative when filming is ongoing. There is 24-hour security in operation and both the park rangers and police are making regular tours. Filming is expected to end in the last week of June.”

Curfew
Speaking of Sir Sean of Bean, he’s back next year in Sky One’s supercharged Curfew alongside Adrian Lester, Phoebe Fox and Malachi Kirby. Get this: a street racing drama in which characters compete to win freedom from the totalitarian regime that rules their lives, no doubt channelling the best of Mad Max, Cannonball Run and every other petrol-scented action-fest of their ilk. Curfew, written by Matthew Read, began filming earlier this summer. Rest assured we will keep you very much posted.

‘The O.C’s Adam Brody Joins Sky’s ‘Fast & The Furious’-Style Drama ‘Curfew’
Quote
The O.C. star Adam Brody has joined Sky’s Fast and the Furious-style drama Curfew.
Brody will play mysterious megalomaniac millionaire Max Larssen in the street race drama, which will air on Sky One and also stars Titanic star Billy Zane and The Hour’s Miranda Richardson. It is a high-profile get for the British pay-TV giant, which is aggressively expanding its slate of original dramas.

He was most recently in Crackle’s Start Up and is set to star in forthcoming features including horror film The Wanting and Warner Bros’ DC superhero epic Shazam.

Also starring in the series are The Crown star Harriet Walter and Terminator and Aliens actor Michael Biehn, Game of Thrones star Sean Bean and Roots star Malachi Kirby, while Adrian Lester (Riviera), Phoebe Fox (Blue Iguana) Robert Glenister (Spooks), Aimee-Ffion Edwards (Troy: Fall of a City), Rose Williams (Reign), Elijah Rowen (Vikings) and Guz Khan (Man Like Mobeen) round out the cast.

The eight-part drama, which follows the story of ordinary people competing in the world’s fastest, most furious, illegal night-time street race. The series, which was written by Read, will see contestants race through the night from London to Scotland in their “pimped-out” vehicles to win the ultimate prize — freedom from the totalitarian government curfew that controls their lives.

The drama is produced by Tiger Aspect Productions and Moonage Pictures, the indie set up by Peaky Blinders execs Will Gould, Matthew Read and Frith Tiplady. Commissioned by Sky’s Head of Drama Anne Mensah, former Sky One boss Adam MacDonald and Sky Entertainment chief Zai Bennett, the series will air on Sky One and will be exec produced by Gould and Tiplady. Sky Vision will distribute internationally.

Brody said: “The Curfew scripts came my way and I couldn’t stop reading; I loved the outsized personality it had. It’s bleak, hopeful, violent, funny and tender all at the same time. It’s a joy to work with such a talented group of performers and downright lovely human beings. Max Larssen is unlike any character I’ve played and it was a thrill to try to access such an intelligent and remote individual.”

Sean Bean, Billy Zane Set to Launch Curfew in Cannes
Quote
Bean (Game of Thrones) and Billy Zane (Titanic) are set to be on hand at MIPCOM to launch the new street-race drama Curfew with Sky Vision.

Bean and Zane will be joined by Phoebe Fox (The Woman in Black 2, Angel of Death) and Malachi Kirby (Black Mirror) on Monday, October 15, to introduce the new series to the global market. The show follows the story of people competing in the world’s fastest, most furious illegal night-time street race to win freedom from a totalitarian government and the curfew they have imposed, which controls all of their lives.

Jason Simms, director of drama and comedy at Sky Vision, said: “Curfew is an absolute monster of a show and we think audiences everywhere are going to love strapping in for the ride of their lives. With eye-popping stunts and scary as hell moments, Curfew promises to be a massive blast of fun, action and emotion, and we can’t wait to get off the start line!”

Sky’s head of drama, Anne Mensah, said: “No one in the U.K. has ever made a show like Curfew before. The combination of engaging characters and fast cars is absolutely unique in the market and we are so pleased to be able to premiere the show on Sky. We are over the moon to welcome our outstanding cast to MIPCOM.”

Sky One's exciting street-racing drama Curfew: trailer breakdown and analysis
Quote
Sean Bean is racing against the clock in a new Sky original production that’s hoping to keep us all in after dark when it arrives on Sky One in February.

We knew the show stars Bean alongside the likes of Billy Zane, Miranda Richardson, Adrian Lester, Phoebe Fox and Adam Brody – and we knew it has something to do with street racing, a totalitarian government, and a mysterious night-time curfew, but beyond that, the show was pretty shrouded in secrecy.

Until today that is, when we got our first look at the teaser trailer for Curfew…

“The curfew will begin in 10 minutes,” says the Tannoy, before someone else tells that, “people want the curfew… they want to be safe”. Clearly, all is not well in this alt-present, and the show’s title is obviously a big part of what’s going on here. Shutters are pulled down and windows are peered out of as the curfew comes into place, keeping us all safe at night from… something.

The world of Curfew looks pretty much like our own, but the fact that a slightly chilling sounding voice has to tell us that people “want” to lock themselves in their homes at night suggests that freedom is as much of a problem here as whatever the curfew is protecting everyone from.

This is a street racing drama and the teaser doesn’t scrimp on cars – with pimped-up dragsters driving around the city streets at night with flame jets, monster trucks and the kind of accessorising you’d expect to see in Death Race. Racing is clearly a big part of the story here, but we also hear that “this is about freedom” – with the cars obviously serving a purpose to stick it to whoever is keeping the curfew in place.

“I’m gonna risk everything I have to get out of this country” says Adrian Lester, holding a gun to someone off screen. In the next couple of shots we see him clutching someone tight then loading up a car boot. Lester’s character looks like a ordinary man pushed to the brink and desperate to keep his family safe.

We haven’t seen Lester on the small screen since Merlin (back in 2008) but his since been in the likes of Case 39, Jimi: All Is By My Side and Grey Lady – not to mention the upcoming Oscar favourite Mary Queen Of Scots. The fact that his character mentions leaving the country here is interesting. Is this a Handmaid’s Tale deal, where whatever awful thing is going on stops at the border?

Whatever is going on, it’s probably nothing that Sean Bean can’t sort out with a machine gun. This is Bean’s first time back on British TV since he picked up a BAFTA nomination for Broken last year and his last role before we next see him play Macbeth in Instruments Of Darkness.

“I know you’re nervous, you’re safe in here,” says Bean to his partner as she cradles a baby bump, followed an off-screen declaration of “race your way free, right?” These are just brief snapshots, but we’re clearly seeing that Curfew is about ordinary people swept up in an extraordinary situation, where personal freedom is at stake.

If Bean can’t do it, there’s enough other interesting names in the cast to do it for him. Phoebe Fox (The Hollow Crown, Eye In The Sky, The Woman In Black: Angel Of Death) looks like she’s playing some kind of paramedic in the teaser, and she’s joined by Malachi Kirby (Roots, Black Mirror) and the likes of Adam Brody, Miranda Richardson, Billy Zane, Robert Glenister and the one and only Michael Biehn. Yep, Kyle Reese is in it.

The rest of the trailer is a lot of glorious mayhem. Set to 'Crash' by The Primitives, we see a lot of car chases, a lot of people firing two guns at once, a fair few heavily armoured cars smashing into each other, and one guy dressed as a chicken. Whatever Curfew is, it looks like a whole lot of fun – even if we do still have an evil totalitarian regime to outdrive/outshoot/outwit.

Right at the end, just as Lester starts worrying about his broken glasses, we see an oh-so-quick glimpse of what might be the bigger problem in the world of Curfew – as something big and scary-looking lunges in from the left and takes him out. What is it? We don’t know. Is this why everyone has to stay in at night? We don’t know. Is Lester okay? We don't know, dammit!

But we will when Curfew launches on Sky One in February 2019. Keep your eyes peeled for more teasers and info from the show as we get them...

Curfew
When day turns to night, ordinary people compete for freedom in the world's deadliest street race

Quote
Get ready for Curfew an audacious and exhilarating new drama from the award-winning producers of Peaky Blinders. When dusk falls, ordinary people compete for freedom in the world's deadliest street race. Over one long, crazy, unforgettable night they will compete for the ultimate prize liberation from the curfew that controls their lives. Curfew is set in the near future. By day the world seems very much like the world we know - but at night the shutters come down, the streets are cleared and a curfew is enforced. The curfew is there to protect the population from an infectious virus that has decimated the country but some people think the rules and regulations that have come with it are too great a price to pay. The race offers the contestants a chance to escape the world of the curfew; the chance for a better life in a better world. To race is to embrace rebellion and recklessness; but also hope, bravery and self-belief. When night comes twenty-five teams line up in South London for the start of the race. They set off at breakneck speed and it doesn't let up until they cross the finish line in the Scottish Highlands. There can only be one winner that's the one rule but before we find out who that's going to be we're going to see each team pushed to the very limit. Alliances will be made and broken, friendships won and lost: parents separated from their children, lovers ripped apart all for the chance of freedom. Along the way we're going to dig deep into the past of the racers to understand just what pushed them to take their lives into their own hands in the first place. Curfew is an insane blast of chrome and diesel fumes, fast and furious, irreverent and mischievous, moving and violent. A real popcorn, blockbuster treat, with characters that will move us, and spectacle that will thrill us. You also have Curfew coming out. What is your character like on that show?

I used to be a bit of a gangster in that character. Then I ended up in prison and marrying this young girl played by Rose Williams. Who’s actually in this now, in Medici [Caterina Sforza in season 3]! (laughs) So she’s my young, pregnant wife and it’s just about this mad car race, it’s mental. She’s having a baby and I’m trying to look after her, but I’m also slightly unhinged. So, she’s slightly unsure if she ever wants to be with me and bring a child into the world with me, and it kind of seesaws in that relationship between us. That’s one story, but there’s so many different stories with different threads running through it.

Sky One's street racing drama Curfew gets an action-packed extended trailer
Quote
We’ve already seen the teaser trailer for Curfew, but now we’ve got the full version – bigger, louder, longer and more insane than ever. Sean Bean’s London-set street racing drama already looks like a dozen movies in one series – with a plot involving a population afraid to leave their homes, a totalitarian government keeping them in, and an explosive race full of flaming monster trucks, machine guns and people dressed as chickens.

Bean stars alongside Billy Zane, Miranda Richardson, Adrian Lester, Phoebe Fox and Adam Brody, but the new trailer poses as many questions as it answers.

“They’re coming for me,” says a face at the start, “they were there from the beginning, and they’ll do anything to make sure no one knows”. Is he talking about the government that have set the night time curfew? Or is he talking about whatever it is that takes down Adrian Lester in the last shot? We still don't know what “they” are, but it’s clear that the stars of the show are ordinary people facing extraordinary circumstances – and up against more than just state control.

We also hear more about the race itself, which seems to be the only chance people have of freedom. “Every year there’s just this stupid race where people die,” says Jessye Romeo (Stan Lee’s Lucky Man), clearly trying to reason with Lester and Andi Osho (Shazam!).

So we know it’s annual, and we know it’s “stupid” – which is made pretty clear by the next few minutes of madcap action. Bean takes a souped-up racer, Phoebe Fox takes an ambulance, Billy Zane takes a VW campervan and everyone sets off to 'Crash' by The Primitives.

The trailer shows us two very clear sides to Curfew – with all the crazy action following what looks like some pretty serious, meaty drama. The younger cast (Fox, Romeo, Ike Bennett, Malachi Kirby) seem to be just as important as the oldies, and Lester’s character’s family look like they might be the real heart of the show.

More importantly though, Bean’s back and he looks like he’s having such a blast shooting/driving/growling. And it’s great to see Lester again, too, right before he hits the big screen in inevitable Oscar-botherer Mary Queen Of Scots.

8 things we learned about Curfew from the Comic Con panel
Quote
Den Of Geek was pleased as punch to host a panel event at MCM London Comic Con last weekend, popping the trunk on Sky One’s upcoming street race drama Curfew. Taking to the main stage in front of a packed-out crowd, our host Jamie East interviewed cast members Phoebe Fox, Malachi Kirby, Rose Williams and Ike Bennett as well as director/co-executive producer Colm McCarthy and production designer Tom Sayer.
Curfew, which will debut on Sky early next year, follows ordinary families in an extraordinary circumstance: their only way to escape a life of fear (and a government-mandated curfew) is to win an epic street race. The champs get to swan off to an island haven, while the chumps that lose are left to fend for themselves.

To whet your appetite even further, here are some things that we learned at the Curfew panel...

1. “There’s an infection. There’s a virus. There’s an outbreak.”

Explaining the more fantastical elements of the show, director/executive producer Colm McCarthy opened up the panel by laying some groundwork. In the world of Curfew, he explained, dangerous creatures appeared after an infectious virus did the rounds in the UK.

“The creatures take over the night,” he ominously intones. “Everyone is locked up in their houses, from dusk ‘til dawn.” And the eponymous curfew is enforced rigorously in what McCarthy describes as “a martial law state.”

“But once a year there’s a crazy race... and that’s what our show is. Our show is the race.” Attendees at the panel saw some footage in the action-packed new trailer, and it looks like this race is going to be epic

2. “It’s kind of a John Carpenter-esque creature feature”

Describing the show as a “crazy mash-up”, McCarthy touched on the various different facets at play in Curfew. The omnipresent deadly creatures give Curfew something of a John Carpenter vibe, for instance. And the mention of such an iconic horror director is sure to have piqued the interest of movie fans in the audience.

In amongst the horror of the creatures and the action of the race, McCarthy was admirably committed to putting character at the forefront. He sees the show as “an opportunity to meet lots of cool, enthralling human beings in the cars.”

Given that McCarthy previously directed the hugely character-driven zombie movie The Girl With All The Gifts, he’s certainly well qualified to find the human element in amongst fantastical mayhem.

3. “He definitely doesn’t die in episode 9”

A clip was shown where Sean Bean’s character, The General, sizes up his competitors before the race begins. “If he dies in episode 9, I’m taking you down,” joked Jamie East afterwards. McCarthy retorted by pointing out that there are only eight episodes, so Game Of Thrones fans need not be worried.

Rose Williams, whose character Faith spends most of her scenes with Bean’s General, elaborated a little on their relationship: “Faith and The General have a dark past that you learn about later on in the series, which is what brought them together. They both have lost so much due to the environment that we’re living in... before the curfew, there was a lot of death and destruction, and a lot of people lost their homes and their families, and I think Faith and The General found each other in that mess and connected on a level through that shared emotional experience. And they’re both quite tough: I think it takes a strong woman to navigate an alpha male, you’ve got to be strong in yourself to handle that kind of energy.”

“I think Faith can calm down and placate The General when he reaches that boiling point,” Williams added, leaving us to wonder whether Bean will be going into full-blown rage mode at some stage.

4. “At one point The Stig was in a wig”

Here’s a fun fact: Ben Collins, who was the original Stig on Top Gear, did a lot of the stunt driving on Curfew. “He’s the best of the best,” Williams enthused, before revealing an interesting anecdote. Presumably to double for a female character, there were apparently moments where Collins had to wear a wig while driving. Not many shows boast a Stig in a wig, do they?

“He’s a fantastic driver but he’s not very kind to gear boxes,” lamented production designer Tom Sayer, who had a team of mechanics working full-time to keep the show’s fleet of vehicles rolling.

5. “They were very accommodating of letting us do crazy ass, super dangerous shit on the streets at night.”

McCarthy explained that a lot of filming took place in Manchester and the north, where the necessary authorities were very accommodating to the show’s needs. And with this level of scale and stunts in the show, there was always a lot of work to be done.

“I remember one night we had 30-odd stunt performers, 31 action vehicles”, McCarthy recalled. “We had a set that had all these wonderful actors. Billy Zane and Sean Bean, Michael Biehn from Terminator. And we had the worst weather that there’s ever been in March in the UK. It snowed. It was The Beast From The East.”

But the show must go on! In the midst of all that outrageously inclement weather, McCarthy remembers that he “had Ben Collins doing doughnuts. Going round and round. So I was like, ‘well, just point some cameras at it I guess!’”

6. “Michael is kind of a hero but he’s not the good guy”

Malachi Kirby took the mic to chat about his character Michael. “He’s too selfish to be the good guy,” Kirby explains, “but Michael has a good heart somewhere underneath that. He’s been through a lot in his past and it’s caused him to be quite bitter and hardened.”

One character who isn’t particularly fond of Michael is Kaye, the paramedic played by Phoebe Fox who ends up an unwitting participant in the race. “It was never Kaye’s intention to take part”, Fox says, before firing dagger eyes at Kirby.

Asked what Michael did to annoy Kaye and drag her into the race, Kirby offers this response: “It’s complicated.” Cue lots of laughter from the crowd, and some intrigue about how this tense character relationship will play out.

7. “That’s post-modern, baby!”

Jamie East spotted a Radiohead lyric in one clip: “Just because you feel it doesn’t mean it’s there.” The line is used in the show while characters talk about the island, a creature-free safe haven that’s touted as the prize for the race’s winner. Not everyone is convinced that the island actually exists.

According to McCarthy, this isn’t the only post-modern piece of writing in the show. Drawing a comparison to Black Mirror’s use of lyrics and song titles in dialogue, McCarthy urged viewers to keep an eye/ear peeled for familiar lines borrowed from other media. Do let us know if you spot any!

8. “Billy Zane throwing a martini glass out the window of a camper van... what more do you want?”

In one clip of exclusive footage shown at the panel, we see all the competitors lining up to start the race. Billy Zane, in the words of Jamie East, appears to be “living his best life” in the clip.

There’s only one show on TV that has Billy Zane in a camper van lobbing martini glasses around, which is more than enough reason to get yourself hyped up for Curfew. And as we edge closer to the show’s release next year, we’ll be sure to keep you posted with all the latest updates...

Curfew interview: the director talks Sky's new street race drama

Quote
The cars are a big part of the show, can you tell us about some of the vehicles?

We wanted to nod to iconic race cars, and cars that people know and love. So there’s a Dodge Challenger, like the one from Vanishing Point. There’s a school bus that matched the one in Speed. We’ve got Lotus series Jaguars and Ferraris. There’s a McLaren in the first episode. There’s a Dodge Viper, which is one of the fastest and most unpredictable and most dangerous road cars in the world.

That must have been logistically challenging?

Television nowadays is like making big movies, you know? That’s just how it is. People expect a certain level. If you’re going to be an action show, a show that has action, you’ve got to be able to deliver something that’s going to be stunning.

I’ve got a 60-inch TV in my living room, and that’s not that weird now. That’s what people do. So you’ve got to be able to immerse people in a proper cinematic experience. But you also have to do the thing of telling a really engaging, emotional story that’s going to hook people in over that time.

The opening of the race, we had 36 stunt drivers all in the one shot, driving manically. But then we also really wanted to be in the race with our racers. So Phoebe Fox [who plays Kaye], who is not… her action credentials prior to this were slim. We had Ben Collins, who was the original Stig, who was doing a lot of our precision driving. So she went and trained with Ben.

She drives the ambulance, which is one of the hero vehicles, right in the midst of all of that stunt action with cars literally crashing into her vehicle, and driving down a ramp, and smashing through a crashed Ferrari.

She’s doing all of that, and we’ve got a camera in her face while she’s doing it. So we wanted to immerse the audience properly into the experience. That went for all of them. You really need those moments where you’ve got Malachi Kirby [who plays Michael] really driving a McLaren through busy city streets at 110 miles an hour.

So it’s got all these crazy stunts, but there’s a real sense of Britishness too?

First and foremost, the first audience are going to be a British domestic audience. For them to be able to go, “Here’s this crazy, insane, John Carpenter-esque genre world, and there’s me and my family, or the family next door in the middle of it, with their chocolate Labrador, Brutus, in the back of their bashed-up Volvo, trying to survive...” And that makes it immediately relatable. But also, I think it gives it a uniqueness as a genre piece that will be fun for people.

Stunt for Sky drama Curfew has been filmed at Arley Hall
Quote
A STUNT for a new dystopian thriller starring Sean Bean has been filmed in the grounds of Arley Hall.

The street race drama, set to air in February, will see pimped-out cars race through the night from London to northernmost Scotland but one of the most dramatic scenes in the show was filmed much closer to home.

Steve Hamilton, Arley’s general manager, said: “A big stunt was filmed here for the new series of Curfew starring Sean Bean.

“We can’t say too much about it, but it will be an exciting moment in the programme.

“It was a night shoot and took place in the middle of a wood on the estate.

“The hardest part was sorting out access to the area as they needed to put in a makeshift track across a field so that cars could reach the location.”

Curfew also stars Riviera’s Adrian Lester, Blue Iguana’s Phoebe Fox and Black Mirror’s Malachi Kirby who will all go head-to-head in the ultimate contest.

Arley Hall is regularly used as a filming location and has recently welcomed back the cast of Peaky Blinders.

There is even a link between both shows as Curfew director Colm McCarthy was also behind the camera for the second series of Peaky Blinders.

Steve added: “Curfew is not like anything that has been filmed at Arley before. We are used to Peaky Blinders and shows like Our Zoo, but Curfew is about car racers who cross Britain in weaponised vehicles to escape a totalitarian government. It just goes to show the magic of television and film that an estate like Arley, which hasn’t changed much in the past 500 years, can be used for so many diverse and interesting shows.”

The series is a fast-paced adventure that crosses a multitude of genres - it’s a street racing drama at its heart, but it’s also about oppression and the fight for freedom, with a fair bit of dark foreboding mystery thrown in for good measure. U.K. Dramas That Could Break Out in the U.S. in 2019
Quote
Curfew, Sky

Fast and Furious meets The Hunger Games? Curfew follows one long, life-changing night in which a group of ordinary people compete in the world’s deadliest street race, driving customized and weaponized cars as they attempt to win their freedom from a totalitarian government. The O.C.’s Adam Brody stars in the 8-part series alongside Sean Bean (Game of Thrones), Adrian Lester (Riviera), Phoebe Fox (Blue Iguana), Malachi Kirby (Roots), Billy Zane (Titanic) and Miranda Richardson (Churchill). Written by Matthew Read (Pusher), Curfew will air on Charter Communications’ Spectrum Originals in the U.S, and is produced by Endemol Shine’s Tiger Aspect alongside upstart U.K. banner Moonage. Colm McCarthy, who helmed critically acclaimed post-apocalyptic zombie indie The Girl With All the Gifts, directs.

Curfew: see the latest pictures from Sky One's new street race drama
Meet the stars and cars of Sky One’s eagerly-awaited drama for 2019…
Quote
We’ve already seen a pair of action-packed trailers for Curfew – and caught up with the cast and crew at MCM London Comic Con – so now it’s time to dive further into the Sky One’s upcoming street race drama with some exciting images from the series.

Curfew, which will debut on Sky One in early 2019, follows ordinary people swept up in the world’s deadliest street race. The prize for the winner? Freedom on a paradise island away from the deadly viral outbreak that’s enforced the curfew.

The ensemble cast is an impressive mix of famous faces (Sean Bean, Billy Zane, Miranda Richardson, Adrian Lester, Michael Biehn and Adam Brody) and rising Brit stars (Phoebe Fox, Malachi Kirby, Rose Williams and Ike Bennett) while The Girl With All The Gifts director Colm McCarthy heads up the show as director/co-executive producer on the first three episodes.

“Curfew is like nothing else on television, really,” McCarthy told Den of Geek. “Basically there’s a creature outbreak that takes over the world. The night becomes impossible. The daytime, in somewhere like London, is very similar to now. But at night, everybody locks themselves up in their homes.”

And the Curfew race itself? That’s a once-a-year event in which entrants drive from dusk till dawn in a bid to win safe haven on the outbreak-free island. Every 12 months the race switches to a different location, and this year it’s the UK’s turn, with London as the starting point.

If that’s piqued your interest, then take a look at the latest official images from the show above, scroll down below to watch the trailer – and make sure to keep your eyes peeled on Den of Geek over the coming weeks for more Curfew info as we get it…

Sky One’s New Street Race Drama Curfew Will Have You On The Edge Of Your Seat
Quote
There’s something for everyone in Sky One’s brand new street racing drama; comedy, tension, romance - and some really really fast cars: Curfew is a brilliantly original beast that finally demonstrates exactly what Mad Max would look like in a country where everyone’s favourite reference point is the Bake Off.

With an all-star cast including Sean Bean, Adrian Lester, Miranda Richardson and Billy Zane, the show follows a group of ordinary Brits who don't want to live in a controlled world and will do whatever it takes to win their freedom.

There might be more rules and much less freedom, but life in Britain under the Curfew is kind of going on as normal. At least, it is in the daytime.

When night falls, a tyrannical government obliges everyone in the country to stay inside with the doors locked and windows shuttered – because there’s something out there, and it’s not friendly at all.

People make the best of the situation, but once a year, surprisingly ordinary people risk everything for freedom in the world’s deadliest illegal street race, just so long as they survive the terrors of the night – and each other!

Each episode tells the story of one of the teams, whether they’re an ordinary family just trying to escape, two sisters and a boyfriend on-the-run or a mechanic (Sean Bean) and his pregnant girlfriend.

Above all, Curfew is about human relationships in a time of crisis, about how ordinary Brits would survive the unthinkable - and their one shot at racing their way to a life of true freedom on an island paradise, which, when you get down to it, may or may not even exist...

There’s something uniquely British about taking a popular American format: the racing action blockbuster, and filling it with real, relatable people, wry humour and some surprising stars thrown in.

Join Curfew’s crew of ordinary Brits as they speed their way to one single shot at freedom in the world’s deadliest street race. Who will survive the Curfew and win a new life in paradise?

Curfew’s Sean Bean, Billy Zane & More
Quote
In a post-apocalyptic world riddled with deadly nocturnal creatures, an annual event allows for the citizens of a totalitarian state to participate in the potentially life-changing race that’s at the center of Curfew. The prize at the end of the nighttime contest, which stretches from London to Scotland’s northernmost point, is said to be freedom from the government and its mandated curfew on a creature-free island. Among the participants in the battle royale is The General, played by Game of Thrones alum Sean Bean, and Billy Zane’s Joker Jones cowboy character. Malachi Kirby, Phoebe Fox, Adam Brody and Miranda Richardson are also among the star-studded cast of the eight-part series, executive produced for Tiger Aspect Productions by Will Gould and Frith Tiplady in association with their new indie production venture Moonage Pictures, and directed by Colm McCarthy.

Talking to TV Drama Weekly’s Mansha Daswani, Curfew’s Bean, Zane, Kirby and Fox explain what drew to them to the project, how they prepared—or wish they’d prepared—for the action-packed series and why it’s like nothing else on television. As for the creative trio of Gould, Tiplady and McCarthy, they discuss how the idea for the street-racing drama came about, what convinced them that it was better-suited for the small screen and the coup of landing the likes of Bean, among others, to make the idea come to life.

Curfew, which is distributed by Sky Vision, premieres on February 22 in the U.K. on Sky One and NOW TV.

The platform will premiere the eight episodes of the first season at the same time

Sky Spain has already announced its premiere of exclusive fiction for the month of March. After the exploration of the faith and the politics of The Miracle , the platform changes of third and emits one of science fiction and action in abundance, Curfew , a British production that counts on the protagonism of Sean Bean as one of its great attractions.

The series takes us to an apocalyptic world in which people can not walk freely at night . A curfew has been established that no one can break, and for which citizens are confined to their homes. In that scenario, a group of desperate people are aiming for a risky career that can lead them to freedom.

Curfew will premiere on March 19, on demand, on Sky with its eight chapters. It is created by Matthew Read, scriptwriter of Peaky Blinders , and besides Bean, in its distribution they appear Adrian Lester, Adam Brody, Billy Zane or Rose Williams.

A new Sky One drama follows a group of amateur drivers who gather to compete in an illegal night-time street race as they flee the totalitarian government curfew

This thrilling mix of horror, humour and wheel-spinning action stars Billy Zane, Sean Bean and Miranda Richardson as rival drivers in an illegal night-time road race.

In the near future, nocturnal man-eating monsters roam the world and, as a result, there is a curfew.

However, the winners of the race get to live on a monster-free island.

The series follows the wacky racers, whose backstories unfold in flashback, starting with ambulance driver Kaye (Phoebe Fox) and the family of geeky civil servant Simon (Adrian Lester), who plan to compete in their Volvo estate!

Stars Sean Bean, 59, and Billy Zane, 52, who play racers The General and Joker Jones, take a pit stop to tell us more…

How would you describe your characters?

Sean: The General enters the race because he wants a fresh start with his pregnant girlfriend, Faith [Rose Williams]. But he has these strange mood swings, so it’s a bit like dealing with
a caged tiger!

Billy: Joker – formerly Doctor – Jones is a psychiatrist who was treating patients prior
to the curfew. He’s not in the race to win. He a sort of Zen cowboy, and continues to offer forms of therapy on the road…

What did you think of the vehicles you get to drive?

Sean: The General’s Jaguar XJS is a muscular machine –
you can really throw it around. I did some stunt driving –
but I had great instructors,
so I was in safe hands!

Billy: My vehicle is all about the cocktail bar in the back!

What appealed to you most about this series?

Sean: It’s different, but also relevant to what’s happening today – things are getting quite militarised in America. And I find dystopian tales fascinating.

Billy: I had a conversation with the creators, who said, ‘We fashioned the Joker around elements of previous roles you’ve played, having no idea whether we could get you!’ So it was kind of a dream role.

Become an Illegal Street Racer in REWIND’s Latest VR Experience Curfew: Join The Race
Quote
British creative studio REWIND is already well versed in immersive content production, having created the likes of Silicon Valley: Inside The Hacker Hostel for HBO, and Ghost in the Shell VR for Dreamworks and Paramount. Today, the studio has announced its latest virtual reality (VR) experience, a futuristic street racer called Curfew: Join The Race.

Created in partnership with Endemol Shine UK, Curfew: Join The Race is an interactive experience based on an upcoming TV series called Curfew, starring Sean Bean and Billy Zane.

The eight-part show follows the story of ordinary people competing in the world’s fastest, most furious, illegal night-time street race. They risk everything as they race through the night from London to northernmost Scotland in pimped-out, weaponised vehicles to win the ultimate prize – freedom from the totalitarian government curfew that controls their lives.

A 15-minute VR experience, you’ll find yourself in the co-pilot seat, sat next to your driver Eduardo while the mysterious ‘Helena’ communicates to you from her hideout over CB radio. As co-pilot, you must make decisions in the hope of evading the police, other racers and surviving the night.

Daryl Atkins, ECD at REWIND and Creative Director on Curfew – Join The Race said in a statement: “The ambition was to create a narrative experience which meshes deeply with the timeline and themes of the show itself, providing an immersive alternative angle on the action. The experience allows fans to step inside the world they see on screen and get closer to the race. Virtual Reality can give audiences a new way to experience stories set inside the universes of their favourite shows. With Curfew we wanted the user to not only watch a story, but be a part of it.”

“We’re all hugely excited to have produced our first scripted, interactive VR experience alongside REWIND and can’t wait for the experience to launch in conjunction with the series so fans can experience it first hand,” said Karolyn Holbon, Head of Online Video and Multiplatform for Endemol Shine UK. “To be able to place a viewer at the centre of a scripted universe originally created for linear broadcast – is truly innovative and we are extremely proud of the end result.”

Curfew: Join The Race is scheduled to launch on 22nd February – the same day as the show – for free on Oculus Rift. For further updates from REWIND, keep reading VRFocus.

Curfew: behind the scenes of the new TV drama filmed in Manchester starring Billy Zane and Sean Bean
Quote
“We filmed a lot of it during the Beast from the East last year and we were all shivering and freezing. But nobody got hurt, that’s the most important thing.”

At least the actors didn’t harm themselves. It’s a different story for the characters.

As Colm comments, “Not everybody completes the race, that’s for sure.”

What's on TV tonight: Monty Don’s Japanese Gardens, The Umbrella Academy, and more
Quote
Curfew Sky One, 9.00pm
Sky One’s new British drama is set in an authoritarian state, where a zombie-style virus has led to nightly lockdowns and terrified citizens risk everything to race for a new life on a private island owned by a mysterious billionaire. It plays out like a cross between The Fast and The Furious and Wacky Races with a dash of 28 Days Later and a hint of Fantasy Island. And if all of that sounds completely insane, that’s because it largely is: it’s a high-octane fever dream that, when it works at least, delivers a welcome jolt of adrenaline.

As this might suggest, there’s a lot going on here and, unsurprisingly, not everything quite comes off. Part of the issue is budgetary – the much-vaunted car scenes can’t compete with those big-screen classics – but the dialogue errs on the heavy-handed and tonally it’s all over the place. That said, Phoebe Fox brings heart as conflicted paramedic Kay, there’s a nice subplot involving an ordinary family who join the race, and there’s the promise of seeing plenty more from Billy Zane and Miranda Richardson.

Best of all, however, is Sean Bean as a grizzled mechanic. When he’s on screen, the show crackles and becomes a drama worthy of sacrificing your Friday night to watch.

'It's must-watch telly': What Curfew's star-studded cast say - from Sean Bean to Adrian Lester

Quote
HOW FAR WOULD you go to be free?

Welcome to the near future. By night, the lights go out and the doors are locked, keeping the streets clear to prevent the spread of a killer virus. Break curfew, and you might not make it out alive.

There is one way to escape the curfew for good: by winning the world’s deadliest car race. Charting a thrilling route through South London to the Scottish Highlands, 25 teams must go head-to-head in a life or death challenge.

Curfew is a blast of drama and diesel, a Sky Original production with a stellar cast including Sean Bean, Adrian Lester, Billy Zane, Adam Brody, Rose Williams and Miranda Richardson.

The show’s first episode airs this Friday at 9pm on Sky One – and it’s set to be the most exhilarating new show of the season.

Don’t believe us? Here’s what the cast are saying…

Sean Bean plays The General, an unpredictable criminal who never forgets those who cross him. Curfew offered Bean the chance to play a role that matched up with the kinds of plots he’s always been most drawn in by:

I’m just fascinated by that darkness. I always find these dystopian tales and images quite fascinating – the comparisons to 1984 and stuff like that.

Each team is fighting to escape the terror of the world they’re living in, but escaping means risking their lives. The show balances two warring desires: the desire to be free and the desire to be safe. The result, as Bean’s co-star Adrian Lester says, is a thrilling ride:

There are some big surprises. Some characters just disappear and some die during the race, which also strengthens the horror and drama and the stakes that the characters find themselves under.

“I thought it [the show] is quite relevant to what’s happening today,” says Bean.

Things are getting quite militarised in America and you wouldn’t like to think that will happen here, but that’s what’s happening in our story… it seems to be a very subterranean society that people are living in.

While the idea of an enforced curfew is – hopefully – one that’s reserved for our TV screens, Malachi Kirby (who plays McLaren driver Michael) says those who know London well will find lots of familiar sights.

“The world of Curfew that we’re creating is pretty much present day,” he notes. “It may seem like the future, but it’s not – hopefully! It pretty much looks how we know London to look.”

Recalling the moment he first read the script, Kirby says, “I remember thinking, this is ambitious.” Since then, he’s come around:

It’s a mash-up of genres and a mash-up of different things we’ve seen, but never all together at the same time. I think it’s going to be one of the most exciting things on TV.

Rose Williams, who plays The General’s pregnant girlfriend, Faith, agrees. “It’s original, daring adrenaline… a sensory overload,” she says.

For Lester, it’s the stellar cast and the compelling plot he reckons will hook viewers from episode one:

A major thing that made me join the cast was the other amazing actors and the fantastic story,” he says. “It’s got all the elements for some must-watch telly, because it is a mad, crazy and dangerous series.

Ready to compete in the world’s deadliest and most exhilarating street race?

CRITICS’ CHOICE
Race war
Curfew (Sky 1, 9pm)
As devotees of Stan Lee’s Lucky Man will testify, Sky has a penchant for dramas that could be comic-book stories. In Curfew, this cartoony feel is oddly combined with a cast stuffed with people who can really act, even though their limited parts don’t require it. Set in a totalitarian Britain, it opens with a prologue episode tracing the run-up to a curfew-breaking street race with escape to “the island” as prize. The General (Sean Bean) sells cars as well as takes part. Paramedic Kaye (Phoebe Fox) forms a team with Michael (Malachi Kirby) and Ruby (Aimee-Ffion Edwards). Simon (Adrian Lester) is desperate to get his family out of London.

Few clues are vouchsafed about the regime they all live…

Billy Zane and Sean Bean lead an ensemble cast in Curfew, which follows the story of ordinary people and extraordinary characters competing in the world’s fastest, most furious illegal nighttime street race.

In this DQTV interview, the stars introduce the series, which is described as a mix of Death Race, 28 Days Later and Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, with some added Wacky Races and a hint of The Fast & The Furious.

Bean talks about how Curfew combines the danger and excitement of the race with the stories of the very ordinary people taking part, and introduces his “charming, dangerous” character.

Zane describes how his character provides some comic relief to proceedings, with stunts and antics designed to build his social media following.

Executive producers Will Gould and Frith Tiplady also discuss how action feature films from the 1980s inspired the series, which Tiplady says is “unashamedly fun.” In addition, they detail the challenges of producing Curfew, including near-constant night shoots, maintaining dozens of vehicles, and numerous stunts.

New street race drama Curfew starts this Friday (February 22nd) on Sky One in the UK and it’s looking like one to watch. It stars an ensemble cast including Sean Bean, Adrian Lester, Phoebe Fox and Malachi Kirby competing for freedom in the world’s deadliest illegal night-time street race.

Desperate for their own reasons, the challengers risk everything as they race through the night from London to northernmost Scotland in their pimped-out, weaponised vehicles to win the ultimate prize — freedom from the totalitarian government curfew that controls their lives.

The cast of Curfew also includes Adam Brody, Andi Osho, Miranda Richardson, Rose Williams and Billy Zane.

Curfew is an 8-part Sky Original Production, from Tiger Aspect Productions in association with Moonage Pictures, will be available exclusively on Sky One and TV streaming service NOW TV.

Tune in to Sky One at 2am or 9pm on Friday 22nd February to see the first episode. Preview it with our gallery below:

Curfew begins this Friday on Sky One at 9pm, NOW TV and on demand, with new episodes every Friday. The series is available to pre-order on DVD, ahead of its release on May 13th.

Actually, in a more accurate way, the first episode premieres at 2am on that day. Sally4Ever also did this. I guess it’s so they can have the series on demand to watch during the first day, rather than having to wait until evening.

Series 1 - Episode 1
Quote
There’s so much going on and so many influences on show, it’s hard to know where to start with Curfew. In an only-slightly-future London, the country is under a strict curfew, at first unexplained. The big excitement is an approaching illegal street race. Gunning to go all Fast & Furious on the streets are a mixed bag of characters with an equally mixed bag of motivations: ambulance-driver and former medical researcher Phoebe Fox; mild-mannered family man Adrian Lester; dodgy mechanic/fixer Sean Bean; a briefly glanced Billy Zane and Miranda Richardson; and many more.

There’s horror and black humour in the mix, too, along with flashbacks to a pre-curfew past. And snazzy opening credits. Buckle up…

Summary

Drama about a group of amateur drivers from all over the world competing in an illegal night-time street race as they flee the totalitarian government curfew that is controlling their lives. Starring Sean Bean, Billy Zane and Adrian Lester.

Curfew on Sky One: Faith and the General’s ‘dark past’ exposed in unexpected twist
CURFEW season one is airing on Sky One this evening, and Rose Williams who plays Faith in the show opened up on her character and Sean Bean’s The General’s dark past.
Quote
One of the individuals who decides to participate in this race which promises a way out is Faith (played by Rose Williams), and she shares a lot of scenes with Sean Bean who plays a character called The General.

Faith is very pregnant in the show, and the two of them decide to make a break for it so that their unborn child can have a shot at living a more normal, stress-free life.

However, these two characters clearly have dark pasts full of secrets they’d rather remain hidden.

“Faith and the general they both have dark pasts, and you find that out a little later on, and they're brought together by events through their environment due to the virus outbreak,” Rose told press, including Express.co.uk.

She added: “And they're both been through a lot and they're both connected, and they're both tough, and they're both very motivated to keep this baby alive.

“So they're the tough guys, very very wanting to win,” she finished.

However, he co-star, Billy Zane, who plays Joker Jones, felt that Rose was underselling herself.

The actor then explained how Faith is the most impressive character in the show.

“She's being very diplomatic,” Billy began, before adding: “Faith is the hardest character in his show and happens to be nine months pregnant, it's just feminism 6.0.”

It remains to be seen what secrets lie in those “dark pasts” which Rose was talking about.

Curfew, Friday 22 February 9pm, Sky One/HD (CH 110/109). Also available for 30 days in Catch Up > Channels > Sky One

In a world overrun by nocturnal man-eating monsters, in an England ruled by a brutal totalitarian government, no one is allowed outside after dark. But there is hope – a way to escape to a utopian island. All you have to do is win a huge, anything-goes drag race across Britain, which takes place over a single night, in the infested dark.

Welcome to Curfew. Created by the producers of Peaky Blinders and Ripper Street, and starring big names such as Sean Bean, Billy Zane and Phoebe Fox, it’s shaping up to be one wild ride.

Think you can handle it? We visited the set of Curfew and spoke to producer Simon Maloney, along with stars Billy Zane and Phoebe Fox, to find out everything you need to know to be in with a chance of reaching the finish line.

Each car is a character

Forget Sean Bean, forget Billy Zane – according to Maloney, “the cars are the stars”. With each vehicle having been cobbled together in the worst of circumstances, the starting line features such entries as a London ambulance (fortified with spikes), an old Volvo 240 family car (picnic included), and a big yellow camper van (fitted with a cocktail bar, party lights and loudspeakers).

But there are human characters too

There are 25 contenders in the race and Curfew explores the backstories of a select few. Zane plays Joker Jones, an ex-psychiatrist turned cowboy anarchist, who competes in a party bus, while Bean’s The General drives a souped-up Jaguar XJS alongside his pregnant partner Faith (Rose Williams). And the ambulance? That belongs to Fox’s character Kaye, who she describes as “the dramatic anchor of the show. It’s not just about winning the race for her. It’s about freeing herself from the shackles of her life.”

It’s every team for themselves

Thanks to a special black box, the competitors can communicate with each other during the race. “If there’s a common problem to solve then the racers might team up for an episode,” said Maloney. “But as they get further down the race that willingness to help begins to disappear. Whether they decide to keep their allegiances or throw them aside is half the fun of the show.”

The creators recruited Billy Zane through flattery

Show creators Matthew Read and Will Gould wrote a letter to Billy Zane in a bid to convince him to join the show. “They identified some things that I hoped had resonated through my work and fashioned Joker Jones out of bits of my career; a little bit of Dead Calm, a little bit of Zoolander. It’s a dream role.”

The Stig is behind the wheel

To get the actors race ready, and to ensure the stunts were out of this world (but also safe), the producers tapped into the talents of Top Gear’s Stig – real name Ben Collins. “Driving the ambulance was absolutely terrifying,” said Fox. “I only learned to drive last year. But after getting in the ambulance with the Stig, I learned a lot about myself as a driver.”

The stunts are huge!

Cars crash, cars explode. The race is chaos. Fittingly, the producers had sourced, purchased and subsequently wrote off around 100 vehicles over the course of filming. One sequence that involves all 25 teams taking off from a demolition derby-style bullring proved so logistically complicated to plan out that the team used hot wheels toys to draft out their idea!

It’s not pretentious in the slightest

Dark and gritty drama this ain’t. Curfew’s goal is to entertain. “There are certainly elements of scares in the show as there are in any kind of B-movie genre,” said Maloney. “But tonally, it’s not a dark show. It’s a high-octane roller coaster ride!”

Curfew: Join the race
Quote
Using immersive technology, Endemol Shine and Sky VR wanted to create an experience that would take people into the heart of new street race drama, Curfew

Curfew: Join The Race is an immersive, interactive VR experience for Oculus Rift, inspired by the exhilarating new drama Curfew, produced by Tiger Aspect (part of Endemol Shine Group) and Moonage Pictures. Curfew: Join The Race launched on 22nd February, in conjunction with the TV series.

Curfew is a street race drama starring Sean Bean, Billy Zane, and Adrian Lester. By day the world seems very much like the world we know – but at night the shutters come down, the streets are cleared and a curfew is enforced to protect the population from an infectious virus that has decimated the country. Ordinary people are given the opportunity to race their way free and escape the world of the curfew.

REWIND partnered with the Endemol Shine UK Multiplatform team to produce Curfew: Join The Race. The ambition was to create a narrative experience which meshes deeply with the timeline and themes of the show itself, providing an immersive alternative angle on the action. The experience allows fans to step inside the world they see on screen and get closer to the race.

This interactive scripted adventure lands you on the starting grid of an illegal street race inspired by the Curfew universe. You meet your driver, ‘Eduardo’ and the mysterious ‘Helena’ who communicates to you from her hideout over CB radio. As co-pilot, you must make decisions in the hope of evading the police, other racers and surviving the night.

The experience was created using REWIND’s in-house version of Unreal engine along with a set of narrative and interactive tools, purpose-built for making immersive VR experiences. The process involved extensive reference photography, motion capture, immersive sound design, and a notable cast of actors and talent.

Curfew: Join The Race is available to download for free on Oculus Rift

Meet the racers of Curfew
Quote
Contains mild spoilers for Curfew episode one.

Sky’s latest event TV show Curfew landed on Sky One on Friday – it’s set in a near future where citizens have to observe a government enforced law to stay in doors after dark for their own protection to avoid attacks from infected creatures.

But mysterious billionaire Max Larssen (Adam Brody) has created a deadly street race that takes place over one night. Teams of racers compete to win the ultimate prize: a place on an island in the South Pacific free from the virus and a real chance of freedom.

Episode one establishes the world, the characters and the back story, and kicks off the race – subsequent episodes will focus on specific teams as the race continues throughout the night.

Want to get up to speed? Here’s our handy guide to each of the teams we’re following – who they are, what they drive and what their motivations are.

Lucky 13
Curfew's dynamic duo, Lucky 13 is made up of Errol (Sean Bean), aka The General, and Faith (Medici's Rose Williams) – a couple who are in the race not only for their freedom, but for the freedom of their unborn child. The General is a career criminal who's infamous for pulling off high-stakes heists and, together with his much younger – and pregnant – girlfriend, has built a tidy business in black-market profiteering. But with the street race offering the winners a new life away from the totalitarian world of the curfew, these two are literally fighting for their child's future – potentially making them two of the contest's most dangerous competitors. They’re behind the wheel of a souped-up sports car, but will that horsepower be enough to power them to the finish line?

Review
Cars always look good racing in urban landscapes on rain-slicked streets, but unless the lighting’s right it can all get a bit murky. Curfew just about gets away with it. This week, the illegal street race to escape London sets off. Rather like in The Hunger Games, there are immediate casualties, but the drama’s most valued players are soon zooming around trying to work out how to cross the Thames without being picked off by the police. Thankfully, one man had a plan… and now his son Roman (impressive youngster Ike Bennett) has to decipher it. There are zombies, bazookas, dangerous computer files, cheese and pickle sandwiches and Sean Bean as a man with a very short fuse. What’s not to like?

Summary
The Donahues have to come to terms with a major setback, and they need to reach out to Kaye, Michael and Ruby of the MED VAC 239 team for help in crossing the River Thames.

Odds are against Sean Bean making it to end of Curfew alive
Quote
A FEW years back I read an excellent article in a film magazine about Sean Bean.

In it, they addressed the fact he has been killed off an impossibly large number of times in film, and television, roles.

It stuck with me because the innovative approach was to actually get him to discuss each screen death, and how he felt about how had been, well, bumped off.

It was, even if in slightly bad taste, very funny and showed how Sean might have had a chaotic private life but he is still one of our most marketable stars.

If Sean’s in something, the chances are his character will die a terrible death at some point.

But there is also a fairly good chance it will be good.

So the arrival of Sky 1’s new drama Curfew, starring Sean, holds a fair amount of promise.

I particularly like it when he decides to, or is allowed the luxury of, using his native Sheffield accent as he is here.

In fact, he obviously savours this since here the accent is almost thick enough to cut with a knife.

He plays a slightly dodgy type involved in shady Wacky Races/Death Race style shenanigans in a dystopian non-descript city.

It could be anywhere but I assume since everyone appears to be British, it is meant to be these shores.

Wherever it is, marshall law is very much in force, innocent types are gunned down without a second thought whilst bad people are hunted, and something has gone so badly wrong, there is an overnight lockdown in order to keep people safe.

Hence the title of choice.

It is very Hollywood - with English accents.

Which almost doesn’t work but is worth sticking with - not least because they have flashbacks which help unfurl the back story to how everything went down the toilet.

I do like a flashback in a drama.

Along with Sean, there is quite a pedigree here from an acting point of view

Adrian Lester, from Hustle, turns up and comedian Andi Osho did a sterling turn in this first episode in a rare dramatic role.

Probably a plot spoiler, but Sean did make it to to the end of episode one in tact.

There is a bit of an undead theme going on here, potentially, alongside the revving of engines and slightly odd outfits, so he probably isn’t out of the woods yet.

If it sounds a tad silly, it probably is, not least because you can sort of accept fantastical plots in a drama when it is all played out with an American accent.

But you have to applaud them for going for an original idea and really putting everything they have into it.

I found myself actively disappointed I couldn’t download the next episode.

Series 1 - Episode 3    Today 9pm - 10pm Sky One
Quote

Review
by Gill Crawford

This updated take on Escape from New York is slowly finding its feet, but this episode dials back on the humour to focus on some genuine face-behind-the-cushion suspense. The vehicles trying to get out of London may have worked out how to cross the Thames, but now they’ve got to get through the vast wall that surrounds the city. This involves going into some very poorly lit spaces – and whatever’s hiding in them.

And we learn more about Faith (Rose Williams, one of several excellent young actors in this well-cast show), the heavily pregnant girlfriend of Sean Bean’s hair-trigger gangster character. Her back story involves a babysitting stint that goes horribly, horribly wrong – and some in-depth weapons training.

Summary
London's huge wall presents the racers with another massive obstacle, while the General and Faith hatch a sneaky plan and Jenny grows increasingly anxious.

Sean Bean’s latest screen death: A breakdown of that Curfew scene
How does Bean bite it and more crucially why, in the latest episode of Sky drama Curfew

Quote
Sky’s new street race drama Curfew is well underway with the third episode now available to watch. The show is a massive genre mashup and now we’re a way in it feels like each ep has a slightly different genre makeup.

Ep three has a strong horror bent: it’s the first time we get a proper look at the mooks and much of the ep follows Kaye, Ruby and Michael who are driving the ambulance and what’s left of the Donahue family who find themselves in a dark underground passage and prime targets for attack. There’s also a backstory which could have come straight out of a horror movie - but more on that later.

Crucially though this is THE SEAN BEAN EPISODE.

Yep, the minute we discovered Bean was in the show we’ve been speculating in which ep he’d bite the bullet. Bean is a terrific actor but he is of course known for his spectacular and frequent demises. What would it be this time? Will he be ripped apart chained to two cars speeding in opposite directions? Will he be mauled to bits by marauding mooks? Will he be chased off a cliff by sheep? Anything was possible.

And the Curfew writers and filmmakers were obviously quite aware of that. So instead, the Sean Bean Episode teases multiple points where you think Bean’s going to buy it, but constantly pulls the rug out from under us.

Bean plays The General (we learn in ep 3 his name is really Errol Chambers - not very glam!) and he’s racing with his heavily pregnant girlfriend Faith (Rose Williams). Faith is due any day and the two are hoping to win a place on the island for the sake of their child-to-be. The trouble is Errol is a massive hot head. We’ve seen this in previous episodes - he flips out big time when Michael (Malachi Kirby) says ‘let the best man win’, drives recklessly and ends up crashing his car early on in the race. In fact at the start of ep 3 it looks like Faith may have lost the baby because of the accident (and this is the first point where you think The General himself might be dead).

The racers have to get past a massive wall surrounding London and different teams choose different means of doing this. For Faith and The General the plan is that a friend of The General’s will smuggle them through a black ops checkpoint with the car in the back of a lorry. Trouble is Errol can’t control his temper and flips out insisting he drive, though eventually agreeing that Faith should remain in the car inside the lorry even though there are crates containing mooks in there with her…

At the checkpoint he’s asked for ID - he manages to keep his cool. The marshall asks to see what’s in the back of the lorry and he opens it up to reveal the car (Faith is out of the vehicle and hiding). The marshall realises they’re racing when he sees the number on the car and Errol draws his gun. He’s definitely going to die now! (we think).

But he gets a last minute reprieve - the marshall recognises him. Seems like The General has a reputation as a bit of a legend, particularly in Cleethorpes (!). Looks like Faith and The General have dodged a bullet… But sadly the marshall hasn’t: an off-hand remark annoys The General who impulsively shoots and kills the marshall. Faith and The General then get in their armoured car and try to drive through the checkpoint but are shot at by the rest of the force manning the point.

Surely this is how Errol will make his exit?

In fact no. Faith, who has felt her baby kick and knows it’s alright, decides to take matters into her own hands. She gets weaponised and shoots up the rest of the black ops guys herself (go Faith!) leaving the pair free to carry on with the race.

Just when you think Bean will live to die another day, ep three does the old switcheroo. While The General attempts to apologise to Faith for being an enormous pain in the bum all episode, Faith tells her she’s finishing the race alone. Nope says Errol, I’ll hunt you down… So Faith shoots him in the head.

The General is no more. But then there's the backstory we mentioned earlier which also involves Bean. It's Faith’s and it's woven throughout the ep.

In it we see Faith as a well spoken young woman who’s babysitting for a family around the time the infection broke out. A series of murders are reported in the area where she and the kids are so she takes the children into the basement to hide. But one of the kids goes outside to find his dog and gets bitten.

Bringing him inside (and clearly not knowing the rules of zombie movies) she puts him in the basement with the other kids while she goes to call the police, and tells them to lock the door behind her. Pretty quickly the screaming starts… Worse still, when the kids’ heavily pregnant mother returns home, seeing her children dead she shoots herself in the head in front of Faith. Then her husband arrives to find his entire family (including unborn baby) all dead.

But when her husband looks up from cradling the dead body of his pregnant wife…. It’s SEAN BEAN!

The General might be out of the race, but there are things we need to know.

Why is he called The General and what’s his reputation based on?

How did he end up with the much much younger babysitter, who he may well hold responsible for the deaths of his entire family?

When and why did Faith go from clean cut school girl type to fully blinged-up firearm-wielding bad-ass?

We will have to wait for future episodes to find out!

Tatton Studios plays host to Curfew scenes
Quote
Tatton Studios has played host to its latest project after transforming a Cheshire farm into a zombie war scene as part of Sky's latest drama series Curfew.

Set to air on 22 March, Millington Hall Farm will be at the centre of the latest instalment as Billy Zane and Miranda Richardson's characters continue their quest for survival.

The series, which also stars Sean Bean, is set in the near future at a time when Earth is overwhelmed by a virus of unknown origin. A totalitarian government imposes a strict curfew in a bid to protect the population, with a handful of people finding themselves competing in a string of illegal street races across the country to win sanctuary.

Producers at Tiger Aspect selected the Tatton Estate for the project.

Charlie Greenstein, head of TV and film at Tatton Locations, said: "Curfew is a unique series and there's nothing else like it on television at the moment, so when the producers approached us, it was a no-brainer.

"Seeing the team transform a disused farmhouse and barn into the scene of a pretty gory attack was incredible and opened our eyes to just how versatile our locations can be, so we can't wait to watch the final edit."

Recent productions worked on by Tatton include Peaky Blinders, The Worst Witch, Bancroft, Coronation Street and Hollyoaks.

Greenstein added: "Our involvement in such iconic series and films is testament to the dedication and passion that our team have for their craft – we're committed to putting Cheshire on the map for film making and cementing our reputation as Manchester and Liverpool’s back lot."

Review

by Gill Crawford

I like Curfew’s changing tone. One minute it’s a shoot-’em-up with light banter, the next it’s squirming horror. Last week, for example, we learnt how Billy Zane’s Joker Jones went from sober psychiatrist to driver of the psychedelic Team Awesome bus; his attempt to analyse an increasingly frustrated Jenny Donahue (Andi Osho) was hilarious.

This week, things are back to edge-of-the seat scary: never has changing a lead in a car been more fraught, especially when there are cows – and zombies – loose on the rural roads of Warwickshire. And we meet another contestant in this death race: tow-truck driver Lou Collins (Miranda Richardson), who’s taking part for that most unlikely of reasons – love.

Summary

Lou and Hanmei crash into each other while vying for position on a country lane, forcing them to venture to a nearby farm to search for spare parts.

Where high-octane meets high-end: we interview Laura Smith about directing second unit on Curfew
Quote
As part of the programme, Laura was selected as a placement director on Sky One’s brand-new dystopian street racing series, Curfew — starring Sean Bean and Miranda Richardson. Working alongside director Colm McCarthy, Laura directed second unit and had access to all levels of production as part of the scheme.

We talked to Laura about capturing car-chases, depicting dystopia, and drowning a street in blood. Read our interview below.

Curfew has a great ensemble cast. What was it like seeing that come together?

Being placement director meant I was in some of the auditions, and also in the casting meetings where ideas were brainstormed and strategies discussed for bringing new audiences via casting and approaching high-profile cast. There were some great surprises — in one case several lower profile cast turned down a role which was then taken, at the last minute, by someone with a much higher profile.

I also loved watching the cast work on set: Billy Zane, Guz Khan and Jason Thorpe developing Team Awesome’s friendship through an improvised game of cricket whilst technical preparations went on around them; Andi Osho, Ike Bennett and Jessye Romeo discussing their wants and stakes in between takes;

Sean Bean hovering quietly behind a hedge before delivering an incredible reaction to a loved one’s death for his very first take, on his first day on set.

They’re well out of London now, but they’ve got to detour round Manchester first (cue some helpful Joy Division and Happy Mondays on the soundtrack in case we weren’t sure, plus a bent copper who’s surely based on Paul Calf…).

I’m developing a very soft spot for this apocalyptic drama. It’s sometimes grim, but its humour is always cheering. Nerdy young Roman, cowering behind a trailer, explains the mechanics of a Mexican stand-off to his mother, as it happens. “Oh, shut up, Roman,” is her sensible response.

Summary

The ambulance, the hot hatch and the Volvo all chase an impenetrable Brookeheath prison truck containing some important cargo, heading towards the badlands of Manchester.

We’ve got so involved with the stories of the ragged group of daredevils on their road race north to escape the monsters over the past few weeks that it’s easy to forget that the main story takes place during just one night. That’s where flashbacks come in, as we spend most of this episode finding out how the outbreak that led to a tenth of the world’s population being wiped out by bloodthirsty zombies began, some five years previously, at that scenic research institute run by Harriet Walter.

As the teams head into Scotland, are some people beginning to wobble about the purpose of their journey? It’s nicely tense as we count down to day zero of the outbreak.

Summary

The remaining racers near the finish line as they approach the Highlands, and Kaye reveals a secret she has been keeping for years when she makes a shocking confession to Michael.

With drama, humour and fast cars, eight-part Sky original production Curfew careers on to Sky One. Sean Bean, Billy Zane, Adrian Lester, Miranda Richardson and a stellar ensemble cast line up for a thrilling night-time street race as they try to flee the totalitarian government curfew that’s controlling their lives. The winner will be the first to reach the finish line by sunrise, and that’s the only rule. The fully integrated marketing campaign is currently visible through TV air time, targeted radio and via a bespoke IMAX wrap, which is an entertainment marketing first for Sky, yet the most progressive aspects of the media mix were executed through social and digital.

Curfew was launched as if it was a car brand and this included a gaming-themed car selector Instagram Story, which made users feel like they were flicking through the diverse range of drivers and vehicles. This tactic was designed to land the ensemble cast and unique cars outside of the boundaries of the show itself. Similarly, by exploiting the functionality of the MOBKOI ad platform, SCA allowed customers to choose their promo by selecting the actor they wanted to see in action the most.

The next phase of the campaign will see Sky release tailored, in-character talent content, captured for portrait social formats, which sees them explain why they are entering the race in the guise of a selfie video message to loved ones. This social content was written by SCA in partnership with the show writers and proved successful enough to be used on air.

Key to the eclectic range of media and content has been the willingness of lead talent to buy into the marketing campaign. The best example of this is a targeted radio campaign featuring Sean Bean, Adrian Lester, Billy Zane and Rose Williams talking to both commuting and daytime listeners with 9 bespoke creative executions.

The best deaths in Curfew
Quote
The General Falls
When you cast Sean Bean in your show, you’ve got to having something pretty clever up your sleeve if you’re planning on killing him off – this is the guy, after all, who’s memorably died in just about everything, most shockingly at the end of Game Of Thrones’ first season.

So it’s all-but-expected that his Curfew character, the General, will bite the bullet at some point. That moment finally comes in episode three, which cleverly plays with audience anticipation as the General attempts to pass through a police check point undetected, taking with him his pregnant girlfriend Faith (Rose Williams).

At numerous points, it seems the General is about to come a cropper, but the moment finally arrives when Faith decides she needs to ditch the General and race alone, because his fiery temper has already nearly got them both killed.

“You seriously think I would let you steal my child?” General rages. “I will hunt you down–” BLAM, the General takes a bullet in the head, as Faith demonstrates she really will do anything to keep her baby alive, even killing its father – what a twist! Jumping into the car, she revs off into the distance, leaving the General to bleed into the tarmac.

Daylight Robbery
We get an insight into just how unhinged the General (Sean Bean) is during a flashback to a bank heist, where he holds up the entire building at gunpoint.

Everything seems to be going off without a hitch until the General sneezes, and a bank teller makes the mistake of saying “bless you”.

“Bless me?” the General demands, “Bless me?!” Losing his cool as usual, he finds the offending teller and, after a tense moment, unloads his rifle into the teller’s chest. He doesn’t stop there, though, taking out the hostages still cowering on the floor in a brutal scene that’s perfectly in keeping with the General’s insane personality. Plus, it’s a fun, tongue-in-cheek spin on that “funny how?” scene from Goodfellas.

‘Curfew’: Spectrum Originals Sets Premiere Date For Sean Bean Street-Racing Drama From Sky One
Quote
Curfew gets its motor runnin’ this month. Spectrum Originals has set a June 24 premiere date for its street-racing drama from Sky One. Sean Bean leads an ensemble for the limited series that also includes Adam Brody, Billy Zane, Adrian Lester and Miranda Richardson

In a near-future London, a mysterious illness has spread throughout the country, leaving a population gripped in fear. As an increasingly desperate government imposes a strict nightly curfew, there is only one hope for freedom — from the virus and from tyranny: an illegal and potentially deadly street race that takes place once a year. Curfew follows the twists and turns of one such race and its unexpected participants, exploring the lengths ordinary people will go to race themselves free.

Robert Glenister, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Rose Williams, Elijah Rowen, Guz Khan, Harriet Walter and Michael Biehn co-star in the eight-episode series written by Matthew Read. He also executive produces alongside Tiger Aspect Productions’ Will Gould and Frith Tiplady in association with Moonage Pictures. Colm McCarthy directs and Simon Maloney produces.

“Curfew is a true love letter to genre in every way,” said Katherine Pope, Head of Spectrum Originals. “Amidst the highest of stakes and the pulse-racing action, though, there is also a rare combination of humor, heart and hope.”

The series will be available exclusively to Spectrum video subscribers free on-demand.

11 Shows and Movies That Killed Sean Bean — Will 'Curfew' Be Next? (PHOTOS)
Quote
Few people have made a living off dying as Sean Bean has. And though the British actor may not be the actor killed the most times on screen, his film and TV roles have included so many doomed characters that fans practically expect him to die in whatever they see him in.

Soon, American viewers will get a chance to see whether Bean lives or dies in the U.K. series Curfew. The action drama, in which he stars opposite Adam Brody and Billy Zane, will premiere on Spectrum Originals on June 24.

In the meantime, relive 11 of Bean's onscreen demises here as we say "Rest in Peace" — or, in some cases, "Rest in Pieces" — to his deceased characters.

Is Curfew the show for you?
Quote
Is Curfew a post-apocalyptic drama, an action heart-stopper, a horror escapade or all of the above? We take a look.

“Extreme situations call for extreme measures,” says a character in the trailer for the new series Curfew. And, trust us, that could easily be the tagline for this dark and thrilling drama, which combines everything from illegal car racing to the living dead! In fact, as Empire magazine says, “The story is something of a blockbuster-genre shopping list.” Sounds enticing, right?

But is this the show for you? We’re glad you asked.

Do you like… a cool cast?
The creators of Curfew have actually assembled some serious talent to populate this post-apocalyptic world. As well as Brody, familiar faces that pop up include Billy Zane (Titanic), esteemed British actresses Harriet Walter (Succession and Foxtel’s upcoming The End) and Miranda Richardson (Blackadder), and even the beloved Ned Stark from Game of Thrones – Sean Bean. He describes the series as “dangerous, exciting and ominous”, and he’s definitely one to know!

CURFEW Watch Wednesdays at 8.30pm on FOX 8 [108] or On Demand. Part of the  ENTERTAINMENT pack
