Roman Kemp’s guide to the Virgin TV BAFTAs
Quote

Hi, I’m Capital Radio Breakfast Show host Roman Kemp and I’m taking over Virgin TV Edit this week to bring you closer to the Virgin TV BAFTAs!

Virgin TV British Academy Television Awards in 2018, Sunday 13 May, 8pm, BBC One/HD (CH 101/108). Also available for 30 days in Catch Up > Channels > BBC iPlayer

It’s almost here! The glammest of the glam from the world of TV will be out in force on Sunday 13 May, with the hope of winning those coveted trophies. I’ll be there, chatting to the biggest names on the red carpet and backstage, on behalf of Virgin TV.

If last year is anything to go by, it’s set to be a fantastic night. I made my debut as host on the red carpet, got to hang out with the Kurupt FM boys, high-fived Sean Bean five times in a row and snuggled up with Joanna Lumley under an umbrella. This year, I’ve got my sights set on all the Love Island former couples – they have to turn up and sit together. Awks!

As for the awards, I’m obviously on edge to find out who has won the Virgin TV Must-See Moment Award. I love Blue Planet II, so I’m glad that made the cut. But nothing beats the tension in the room for the Leading Actress and Leading Actor awards. I’m feeling nervous for them already.

It really is as fun as it looks on the TV. I love seeing producers from different shows coming together and thinking of new ideas – it’s a breeding ground for creativity. And BAFTA puts on a good spread – even for a vegan like me (I’m hoping for a falafel wrap!).

It’s truly the biggest night in the TV calendar and it’s a fantastic celebration of the best things on TV. It’s only fitting too, as TV seems to be outshining cinema at every turn. We’re seeing more and more film companies teaming up with television to release films straight to TV and streaming – I think at some point, television will overtake the cinematic world!

But until then, I can’t wait for you to join me on the red carpet. I’ll be the guy in the tux…

Find out how Virgin TV customers can watch the action live from Virgin TV BAFTAs red carpet here.

Bafta TV awards 2018: who will win – and who deserves to
Quote
Leading actor
Jack Rowan – Born to Kill (Channel 4)
Joe Cole – Black Mirror: Hang The DJ (Netflix)
Sean Bean – Broken (BBC One)
Tim Pigott-Smith – King Charles III (BBC Two)

Bean’s performance as a flawed but decent Catholic priest competes against a revered actor who, after his death last April, can never top his verbally and psychologically precise portrayal of the current Prince of Wales as king. A share would be the fairest outcome, but maybe Bean should win, as his brilliance was stretched across six hours.

Leading Actor

Nominees: Sean Bean (Broken), Joe Cole (Hang the DJ, Black Mirror), Tim Pigott-Smith (King Charles III), Jack Rowan (Born to Kill)

Will win: A slightly strange field, since two of the dramas were one-offs. Sean Bean should romp home for his raw, craggy turn as a troubled Catholic priest in Jimmy McGovern’s powerful six-parter.

Should win: If it’s not Bean, a posthumous win for Tim Pigott-Smith would be a lovely tribute.

Bean bags Bafta for Broken
Sheffield's own Sean Bean has won his first ever Bafta.

Bean claimed the Leading Actor gong at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts ceremony for his role in the BBC drama Broken in which he played a Catholic priest.

He was presented with the trophy by Joely Richardson (pictured), who starred with him in Lady Chatterley's Lover in 1993.

After the ceremony, Bean praised the scriptwriter of Broken, Jimmy McGovern, for creating the character of Father Michael Kerrigan:

Sean Bean wins BAFTA award
Quote
Sheffield born Sean Bean won his first BAFTA award on 13 May for his role as leading actor in the TV Drama ‘Broken’.

In the show which was aired in 2017, Bean stars as Father Michael Kerrigan, a Catholic priest presiding over a Northern urban parish.

‘Broken’ is about the story of priest Kerrigan who despite suffering from his own troubles stemming from a traumatic childhood, tries to guide several of his most vulnerable parishioners through the trials and tribulations of everyday life.

In his acceptance speech Sean Bean said: “Thank you very much, everyone.  Thanks, BAFTA.  This means a great deal to me.  I’m really honoured and it means such a lot to me.

“I don’t think I’d be in this situation without the great mind and the great writing of Jimmy McGovern.  It was an inspiration to me. I had worked with him before and he’s an incredible man who shines a light on some of the darker aspects of our society.

“I would like to thank Colin McEwan, and Donna Malloy, the producers of the show, and my good friend Gary Armstrong.  He’ll know why.  And my wife Ashley.

“I would just like to say thank you, I’m really, really honoured, and absolutely delighted.  Thank you very much.”

I never expected to play Catholic priest, admits Sean Bean following BAFTA win

Sean Bean has said he never expected to play a Catholic priest after winning a BAFTA for his role in BBC’s Broken.

However, the popular actor said he is now looking forward to playing more characters like Fr Michael Kerrigan.

Receiving the BAFTA for best leading actor, Bean thanked Broken writer and creator Jimmy McGovern.

“This means a great deal to me, I’m really honoured and it means such a lot to me,” he said. “I don’t think I’d be in this situation without the great mind and the great writing of Jimmy McGovern who is an inspiration to me, I’ve worked with him before and he’s an incredible man who shines a light on some of the darker aspects of our society.”

Speaking to presenter Clara Amfo following his win, Bean, who first found mainstream success for his portrayal of Richard Sharpe in ITV’s Sharpe, said he enjoys the excitement of being such a diverse actor and playing so many different roles.

“I never expected to play…a Catholic priest so it’s constantly surprising me and I like it like that,” he said.

The six-part drama series focuses on Fr Kerrigan, a well-respected Catholic parish priest in northern England who supports several of his most vulnerable parishioners while also suffering from his own troubles.

Bean, who was also an executive producer on the show, revealed that one of the key points he examines when looking through a script is character development

“In terms of character there are not a great deal of scripts that have characters that develop and we can relate to, there’s quite a few one dimensional characters that you can kind of play but you’re trying to supplement it with whatever you do in order to improve the character whereas something like Broken or Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings, the characters are there and you kind of live up to their expectations and it’s up to you to reach that peak of characterisation,” said Bean, who is also popular for his roles as Eddard ‘Ned’ Stark in Game of Thrones and Boromir in Lord of the Rings.

“I look forward to playing characters like Fr Michael Kerrigan again,” he added.

Meanwhile, Bean praised McGovern’s writing, describing it as beautiful, eloquent and powerful.

“I find his writing very natural to say and it’s not very often that happens,” said Bean. “He just seems to know how to create characters that express real humanity and real deep down emotions which are quite fascinating for an actor but he just seems to have that quality and I just relate to his work and his writing quite strongly.”

Game of Thrones star Bean won the award for his portrayal of Father Michael Kerrigan, a Roman Catholic priest who tries to be a confidant, counsellor and confessor for a congregation struggling with its beliefs amid the challenges of daily life in contemporary Britain. The series was written by Jimmy McGovern.
“It kind of developed with Jimmy as an idea. I’ve worked with Jimmy before on a thing called Tracie’s Story, where I played a transvestite, so I knew it would be something unusual. It was kind of semi-autobiographical for Jimmy; it was based on his experiences but it stemmed from scratch really. There was no script, no story, it was just his ideas and he was very passionate about that. I got on board very early and said I’d love to work with him again and let’s see what you come up with. I wasn’t really taking a gamble because I love him – and whatever he comes up with, it’s going to be interesting. But it was very exciting for me. It was a nucleus that developed.
“We got the first episode and that was brilliant. It started off well and it was great to work with Anna [who played Christina Fitzsimmons], who was someone I’d wanted to work with for a long time. She was so perfect for the role, she was so fragile and vulnerable and yet a very strong woman, a woman with great self-belief but who has been battered around by her circumstances.

“I like looking at who the characters are, how they’re written and how they develop. That’s always been the case. When you read a script, if there’s detail that’s great but, in terms of characters, there are not a great deal of scripts that have characters that develop and we can relate to. There are quite a few one-dimensional characters you can play but you’re trying to supplement it with whatever you do to improve the character, whereas something like Broken, Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings, the characters are there and you live up to their expectations. It’s up to you to reach that peak of characterisation. I’m just a bit more selective [now] and I like to know the directors and producers. Fortunately I’ve worked a few years and got to know quite a few people. I look forward to playing characters like Father Michael Kerrigan again.
“I worked as a producer on Broken. I’d like to spend some time looking at other things and maybe books I’ve read or ideas people have and become a producer. I wouldn’t say I’d like to direct, I can’t see myself doing that at the moment, but I’d like to be involved in the process of starting something from scratch and developing it and finding interesting characters to play. I don’t want to play something extreme. I think often the very simple stories as in Broken are the most powerful.”
