Only one more point needed to guarantee a place in the playoffs - they must be thrilled with how they have done this season.

http://www.msn.com/en-gb/sport/english-league-one/nigel-clough-sacked-sheffield-united-part-ways-with-manager-after-failure-to-gain-promotion-from-league-one/ar-BBkdkDb?ocid=mailsignout

"Sheffield United have sacked Nigel Clough after the club missed out on Sky Bet League One promotion.

The Blades, who reached the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup, were beaten in the play-off semi-finals by Swindon and have been condemned to a fifth year in the third tier.

Clough has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect, with his coaching staff of Gary Crosby and Andy Garner following through the exit door.

A club statement read: "Sheffield United today announce that Nigel Clough, the club's first-team manager, and his management staff, are to leave Bramall Lane with immediate effect following the decision by the board that a change in direction was necessary for the forthcoming season.

"The search for the club's new first-team manager will now start and it is hoped that this will result in identifying and recruiting the right candidate within a relatively short period of time.

"The club would like to place on record its thanks to Nigel, as well as his backroom staff of Gary Crosby, Andy Garner, Martin Taylor, Simon Clough, Michael Forsyth and Matt Brown for their contribution to the club during their time at Bramall Lane and wish them all well for their future."

Clough took the reins at Bramall Lane in October 2013 with the club in the lower reaches of League One and steered the Blades away from danger and just missed out on the play-offs while also embarking on an FA Cup run which ended in a semi-final defeat to Hull at Wembley.

The onus was on delivering the Blades back to the Championship for the first time since 2011 this season, but it was again in the cup competitions where they excelled, reaching the last four of the League Cup where they suffered a two-legged defeat to Tottenham.

They stuttered into the top six of and were condemned to a fifth season in League One after a 7-6 aggregate defeat in the play-off semi-finals to Swindon, with the second leg, which proved to be Clough's last game in charge, ending 5-5 at the County Ground."

That's a shame ; he may not have got them up to the Premier League this season but they were so close, and he has done so much  given where they were when he first took over.

Nigel Adkins: Sheffield United appoint ex-Southampton boss

Quote
Sheffield United have appointed former Southampton and Reading boss Nigel Adkins as their new manager on a three-year deal.

Adkins, 50, has been out of work since being sacked by Reading in December.

He succeeds Nigel Clough, who was sacked by the Bramall Lane side last month after losing to Swindon in the play-off semi-finals.

"We know League One is a massive challenge but we will be looking to get promoted," Adkins said.

"They narrowly missed out in the play-offs and we've been given the opportunity to build on that.

"It is a slog and a grind and you have to get through it by working hard and being united."

Adkins has won promotion from the third tier three times as a manager, twice with Scunthorpe and once with Southampton.

They all get sacked at one point or another by one team or another for not doing things quickly enough usually - being a football manager here is a bit like musical chairs, just that everyone is hoping for the next club/manager to be a better fit.  Southampton are/were top flight premier league so he has some good experience in there with the not so good clubs.

Sheffield United sign Billy Sharp and Conor Sammon

Quote
Sheffield United have signed striker Billy Sharp from Leeds United and secured Derby County forward Conor Sammon on a season-long loan.

Sharp has joined for an undisclosed fee and signed a two-year contract with the option of an extra year.

The 29-year-old returns to Bramall Lane for a third spell having begun his career there in 2004 before playing for them again from 2007 to 2010.

"I'm looking forward to working with them," said Blades boss Nigel Adkins.

Republic of Ireland international Sammon, 28, has one year left on his contract with Derby.

Sheff United 2-2 Newcastle - Morgan Testimonial

Quote
The Newcastle visit at the weekend was technically part of the Sheff United pre-season preparations ahead of the 2015/16 season but it was, first and foremost, Chris Morgan's Testimonial game.

Morgan himself got onto the pitch for the final three-minutes, in what would have been the stuff of fairytales - something Sean Bean might have starred in like that other Blades film he did 'When Saturday Comes', remember that? - he tried to win it with a late freekick....

That wasn't to be as this crashed into the wall and the game ended in (a Desmond) two-two draw.
