Sheffield United players celebrate with champagne as Bolton loss confirms them as League One champions

Sheffield United were confirmed as League One champions without kicking a ball on Saturday afternoon following Oldham's narrow victory over second-placed Bolton.

The Blades stars were ready to celebrate at the club's training ground, popping a case of champagne upon full-time and singing the traditional 'Championes' song.

Footage of that moment was then uploaded to Twitter via their official account followed by a swift apology for the rude language heard during the excitement.


With their Easter Monday game against Bradford City live on Sky Sports, Sheffield United hoped to secure it in front of a home crowd and a large TV audience, but Bolton's failure to beat strugglers Oldham meant the crown is now theirs.

It will at least allow the fans and players to enjoy a party atmosphere at Bramall Lane.

Ched Evans: Sheffield United set to re-sign striker from Chesterfield

League One champions Sheffield United are set to re-sign striker Ched Evans from Chesterfield.

BBC Radio Sheffield reports the clubs have agreed a fee of about £500,000.

Evans, 28, last played for the Blades in 2012 before he was found guilty of raping a 19-year-old woman in a hotel room in 2011 and sentenced to five years in prison.

That conviction was quashed and, following a re-trial last October, Evans was found not guilty.

Wales international Evans joined Chesterfield last summer and has scored seven goals in 29 appearances for the relegated League One side this season.

He scored 42 goals in 103 league appearances in his first spell at Bramall Lane.

The Blades clearly believe they can get the best out of Ched Evans. He played his best football at Bramall Lane and Chris Wilder is known for his man-management skills.

Fans will be torn on this one. Some will back the signing and remember the days, albeit five years ago, that Evans was a prolific goalscorer. Others will see it as an unnecessary distraction.

United have already won the League One title and this story will now dominate the headlines before their coronation as champions on Sunday.

Striker Billy Sharp scored the only goal to ensure Sheffield United made a winning start to life back in the Championship against Brentford.

Brawl breaks out after Middlesbrough v Sheffield United

Children as young as 10 were injured after a brawl broke out between more than 200 football fans in a coach park.

Five people were arrested in the wake of the fight after the Middlesbrough v Sheffield United game on Saturday.

Cleveland Police said youngsters were "terrified" by the violence, which left one police officer in hospital.

Sheffield United said the culprits were facing banning orders. Those held remain in custody while inquiries continue.

 Disorder began just before the final whistle when Blades fans thought their team scored a last minute equaliser, only for it to be disallowed.
