Yes, I heard about that. Seems like someone finally saw the resemblance between Ian McShane and Rufus Sewell.

You might be thinking of Sarum by Edward Rutherfurd Blue Jay.

It's years since I read the book so I had to resort to Wiki for this one.

The novel's Kingsbridge is fictional and not Kingsbridge, Devon, or any other British town of the name. Its location is that of Marlborough, Wiltshire; Follett chose it as Winchester, Gloucester, and Salisbury can be reached within a few days on horseback. Kingsbridge Cathedral is based on the cathedrals of Wells and Salisbury

One of the characters doe sgo to Europe to study but the story is essentially based in the south of England.

yes, bluejay, jack comes to spain looking for his father, first, he goes to santiago de compostela, after, he goes to salamanca (you all know salamanca because of sharpe), and last place in spain was Toledo, the city I live, and Kent Follet was here in toledo, because when jack came to spain, toledo cathedral was being built, Jack comes to Toledo to work in the cathedral, in the book you can read a very nice description of the courtyards of toledo, today you can see them, lovely,  in Toledo  jack finds the statue of the Virgin bearing with him to England, after, he goes to paris (saint denis) and at last, to england, in fact, ken follet was in toledo, and when I saw toledo in that book, I cried, lot of people reading about my city,  in salamanca, another wonderful cathedral, both gothic style, and viggo also comes very often to toledo

Probably not, but as I haven't read the book yet, I won't be bothered by it now. It does look quite good from that trailer.
