In TNT’s upcoming undercover-espionage thriller Legends, Sean Bean plays Martin Odom, a deep-cover operative who’s uniquely adept at adopting new identities. Perhaps predictably, there are an awful lot of people who want to kill him—and that’s the least of his problems. The show debuts on August 13, but EW is excited to share an exclusive new trailer for the series, which hints at the show’s twisty serialized arc, plus a look at Legends co-stars Ali Larter, Tina Majorino, Steve Harris, and Morris Chestnut. Comic-Con: Sean Bean Mocks His Onscreen Deaths At TNT’s ‘Legends’ Panel

Before the short panel got under way, the audience was treated to a full preview of the first episode of the TNT show introduced by Bean himself. Via video, the actor apologized for not being at Comic-Con but joked that “maybe that’s a good thing” for the crowd’s safety as the former Game Of Thrones and Lord Of The Rings star is of course one of the most killed off actors around. “If you were me, one does not simply avoid death on a daily basis,” Bean deadpanned to howls from the fans in the room.

Sean Bean’s ‘Legends’ entices Comic-Con audience

At the screening of the first episode of Legends, Bean recorded an intro apologizing to the fans for not being able to be present. He had some meta fun talking about his absence. Bean joked that it was a good thing that he wasn’t present since when he dies he takes out innocent bystanders. He then, in full Boromir voice stated, “That one does not simply walk into Comic-Con without bringing footage.”

In the first episode, the audience is sucked into Sean Bean’s “legend” as an out-of-work, demolitions expert who has taken up with a militia group. There is no trace of the charismatic Bean as he transforms into a physically awkward, middle-aged American hick with a stutter. He has to balance holding onto this character with the support of his team, and his real life (that is not so different than the legend that he has created) as he infiltrates the group to stop a terrorist attack. Their backup becomes especially important when his identity is questioned, and everyone has to improvise on the fly.

Ali Larter on ‘Legends’, Her Character, and Sean Bean

  Was it a tough decision to commit to a TV series?

Ali Larter: “I mean, I couldn’t be more excited about this schedule. It’s 10 weeks. You know, from being on Heroes where we’re doing 24 episodes, I think it’s really difficult to keep the stories up to the level that is riveting, that the audience deserves. When you take something like this, there’s really a chance to keep it tight where the writers can get really specific and layer things in. So that’s something I was excited about.

I also think that for the actors, especially Sean [Bean] but anyone who’s taking on these different legends, you can’t do that for 10 months a year. You would lose your mind. We’re shooting 14 hours a day. Just the pressures of it and the amount of work, you’re not sitting on the sidelines of these shows. You’re always on. So when you know there’s a finish line, it gives a chance to really give it your fastest and your strongest effort where I think that when it stretches out, there’s a chance for people to get overwhelmed.”

Do you and Sean Bean’s character Martin have a past history on the show?

Ali Larter: “Do we have past history? Have we made love? Yet to be known… I know, but it’s a fun relationship and when you take people that are very different in the way that they approach life, you’re going to get friction. Crystal likes to follow the rules and Martin goes by instinct. For me, it’s just been so thrilling to work with Sean Bean. He’s just an extraordinary actor. To put him in a role like this is like gold.  So to watch him each day create these different personas that he takes on through the hair, through the glasses, through the body language has been really interesting.”

Who on the team does she love working with, and who is the craziest on the team?

Ali Larter: “Right, well definitely Martin. That’s where the conflict lies because she’s always cleaning up his messes. He does what he thinks he has to do, but by doing that people get hurt and that’s just not acceptable to her ever. Steve Harris is incredible on the show. He brings such a gravitas and he’s Crystal’s boss. So to really see him and she respects him but she also really feels it with Martin. She’s not sure that he’s all there, that the toll of the work hasn’t really impacted his ability to make rational decisions. She just doesn’t feel she should be in the field at all times.”

Discovery’s New Form Produces Branded Short Film for New TNT Drama ‘Legends’

TNT is set to premiere its newest original series, the spy-thriller “Legends” starring Sean Bean (“Game of Thrones”), on August 13. But that won’t be the first opportunity to watch the pilot, which will be first made available on TNT’s TV Everywhere and VOD platforms a week prior to the on-air premiere — a practice that’s becoming increasingly common among TV networks.

 That’s not all TNT is doing digitally, though. As part of Hyundai’s exclusive sponsorship of the series, TNT will also air an exclusive “branded” short film, which was produced by New Form, a digital content studio founded by Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, and Discovery Communications.

The film, called “The Genesis,” will, like “Legends,” focus on the theme of identity. As part of the Hyundai deal, the automaker’s Genesis will be integrated into the short as the main character’s vehicle.

The short film will air in multiple segments during the limited commercial breaks in the pilot episode — both during its sneak-preview period on digital as well as when it airs on the network. “The Genesis” will also be made available on TNT’s VOD channel, TNTDrama.com, and social media accounts for both “Legends” and Hyundai.

The “Legends” digital sneak preview begins on August 6.
