Sean Bean: the man Danny Dyer could have been
Quote
Sean Bean, actor, hunk and man was out and about in the LA sunshine yesterday, larking (Starking?) around inbetween filming bits of new TV drama Legends. Our extensive research (we looked on IMDB) suggests that Legends follows deep-cover operative Martin Odum (Bean) who has an uncanny ability to transform himself into a different person for each job. Sounds like Mr Benn to us. Which is no bad thing.

But, what exactly was Sean up to? Let's try and guess. He's dressed all in deep black so could it have been some ninja training?
Hmmm... Probably not.

Was we wearing black for SNEAKING?
Noooo. Not so far as we can tell.

Might he have been getting into character as a bouncer?
We don't think so but maybe.

What the evidence of our eyes suggests is that Sean Bean was playing football. Check the gallery for our incisive football observation and commentary.

'Legends' at WonderCon: Sean Bean and Ali Larter present new espionage TV thriller
Quote
Sean Bean is returning to television in the new TNT action drama "Legends." The series has only been in production for two weeks, but a number of clips were presented for the WonderCon Anaheim 2014 audience in attendance to give them a sense of the show.

Due to the nature of legends, Bean will play multiple personas, sometimes playing other people. When asked how he switches between the different characters, Bean says, "Just changing my hairstyle, really. Put a wig on." He continues seriously, "It's fascinating because it's an actor's dream to play different characters."

"The show is not driven by cases, it's not driven by the caper. It really is driven by Sean's character and the quest that he's on and the question that's raised in the pilot," Wilcox says. "The more he digs into what this mystery is surrounding him, the more he gets trapped in this wilderness of mirrors where he has difficulties telling his legends from his life."

Wilcox says he has a seven-season plan for "Legends," and enjoys that each season will only be a concise 10 episodes. "Legends" premieres on Aug. 13, 2014 on TNT at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

WonderCon: Will Sean Bean Survive in TNT's Legends?

Quote
During the panel, attendees were shown two clips from the new show, offering a little more insight into the characters. The first clip centered on Bean's character Martin, who confronts the man claiming that Martin's identity might not be his own.

As Wilcox noted, this is a series that delves into the ramifications of toying with a person's mind. With that in mind, Legends isn't so much about week-to-week missions, but the characters themselves. "It's not driven by cases; it really is driven by Sean's character and the journey he's on to find the answer to this question that's raised in the pilot," Wilcox said. "That's a question that in some respects will be answered, but then more questions will be raised... There's a cost to what [these people] do, and that's one of the aspects we're exploring."

Said Bean of his character, "This is certainly something I'm looking forward to sinking my teeth into, the different personas... It's every actor's dream to play different characters. It's a bit weird, really... Like, last week, I played three characters in one day. But it's okay, because you have time to adjust." Then again, he said, changing characters in the middle of a scene or playing two characters at once, "That's a challenge."

Finally, when asked the obvious question of whether Bean's character will die on the show, the actor replied with a laugh, "I'm alive so far!"

WonderCon: LEGENDS Panel Recap

Quote

We saw two brief clips from the pilot episode.  In the first, Martin notices a strange man following him.  When Martin confronts him they have a scuffle, Martin asks who the man is.  “I don’t know,” he replies.  “Who are you?  Who do you think you are?”  The man says that Martin can no longer see where his legends end and his life begins.  His entire identity is a lie.  “Trust no one” the stranger warns.

The second clip introduced Ali Larter’s character, Crystal McGuire.  Bean is in costume as one of his legends, as is Crystal, they’re in a strip club, and she’s giving him a lap dance.  They sneak whispers to trade clandestine information.  A stern, unsmiling man interrupts them and tells Martin they need to go.  Crystal speaks into a headpiece, “They made him.”  The voice on the other end asks how she knows that.  “I read people, that’s what I do,” she replies.

Unfortunately that was all we got to see in the way of footage, but the panel revealed some more about what we can expect from Legends:

It films in L.A., but the plot will travel all over the United States…as long as the setting can be replicated in Los Angeles

Bean said it’s not that hard to play mulitple characters, even though he’s done up to three in one day, because he usually changes wardrobe and hair and has time to transition between them.  He said the big challenge is transitioning between multiple characters within a single scene

Naturally, the big question on everybody’s mind is whether or not Bean will survive the show.  Wilcox was obviously unwilling to answer that, but joked that since Bean playing so many characters they can kill him all the time.

The first season has a ten episode order, and the season is meant to be self-contained, but there is a seven season plan if the show does well.

Sean Bean Goes Undercover In TNT's 'Legends'

“He’s a very interesting man,” Sean said of Martin. “I guess he’s a blank canvas and that’s the way I look at it, that he kind of transforms himself into the personas, takes on other identities and [he has an] absolute total belief in that, which can be a problem sometimes… immersing himself in the part as it were, I guess, like we do as actors. But sometimes, he can’t get out of it and those kinds of personas clash on occasion.”

TNT’s Legends has Legendary Cast!

Quote
Sean Bean returns to our television screens, but this time, he isn’t going to break our hearts.
A psychological thriller is coming your way on TNT this August 13th. And I can quote the show runner as saying there’s no current plans to kill off Sean Bean’s character. We will take that as comforting.

Sean Bean, Ali Larter, Showrunner David Wilcox, and More Talk New TNT Spy Series LEGENDS, Deviations from the Books, and More at WonderCon

Quote
SEAN BEAN:  I read the book before we started the pilot, and I’ve been reading it since.  It’s good to just dip in and out of it because the characters are very interesting, fascinating characters.  The actual book is a good basis to work from.  I think it’s an excellent book, and it certainly helped me, in terms of Martin Odum and Lincoln Dittman, the other character that I play, and Dante Orbach, which I also play.  It was good.  Rather than kind of just inventing the characters, at least I had that material that I could refer to, to try to create them.  That was very useful for me.  But it becomes a thing of its own, after a while.  I think we take that as a basis and an anchor for what we’re trying to achieve, but we go off on tangents.

BEAN:  It’s total belief in a character.  I believe that he is this man, and that’s why it’s a very interesting drama.  Psychologically, it’s fascinating.  He becomes this person, totally.  He immerses himself in these characters, has his own apartments, and his own preference for food.  He totally believes in that character.  And when those characters collide, that becomes a problem, psychologically, for him, even though he doesn’t want to admit it.  He thinks he can carry on doing these characters and still become himself.  Just like actors, we think we can play this part, but sooner or later, that’s going to come down on you and you’re going to have some problems.  And this guy certainly has some problems, which filters through to all the other departments, in general.  Martin is a good guy.  He does some good things.  The people he’s working for are not dissimilar to other illegal organizations.  It just happens that they’re part of the government, and they’re legal.

Are you playing this character as if he’s playing somebody else, like two characters, at the same time?

BEAN:  I do three characters, which is great.  It’s fantastic and fun.  It’s an actor’s dream to be able to do that.  But sometimes, it gets a big confusing for me, too.

How do you approach all of the different characters, and how much do you know about the possibility that his real identity might not even be real?

BEAN:  They don’t let me know very much.

Guess I have not been paying attention to this as I did not know this was based on a book.  Legends by Robert Littell will have to be my next read, if I can find it in the library.
