Overshadowed By: Ian McKellen, Viggo MortensenThere are those who say that Sean Bean cannot act to save his life, and there are those who say: “What? Sean Bean’s a great actor! You’re talkin’ crazy – now get outta here!” The jury’s still out on which team is right, but if there was a movie to help the former sway the later, it might be the first installment in Peter Jackson’s brilliant Lord of the Rings trilogy, subtitled The Fellowship of the Ring. Of course, most people remember Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen and Viggo Mortensen (the first because he’s the main character, the last because they’re brilliant) over Bean.As Gondorian soldier Boromir, however, Bean has what is arguably the most interesting part in the original movie – he is consumed by the One Ring before anyone else, of course, but he’s also brave and noble, whilst remaining flawed. Bean showcases every aspect of his acting ability as he plunges himself into this role – so much so, that it’s a shame the most interesting character is killed off at the end of the film. So whereas McKellen and Mortensen received the most acclaim for their performances as Gandalf and Aragorn, Sean Bean gave us the most complex character.
