The Frankenstein Chronicles will return for a second season on ITV Encore.

Sean Bean will also be back for the new run of the series, which is inspired by Mary Shelley's Frankenstein novel.

Production of the new series is set to begin in Northern Ireland in January 2017 and will be executive produced by Tracey Scoffield and produced by David Tanner for Rainmark Films. Bean will also executive produce the new series.

The series introduced John Marlott (Bean), a veteran of the Battle of Waterloo, who was battling his own demons and haunted by the loss of his wife and child. In pursuit of a chilling and diabolical killer, Marlott’s investigation took him into the most exalted rooms and darkest corners of Georgian London, a world of body snatchers, anatomists and scientists whose interests and ambitions came together in the market for dead bodies.

As Marlott investigated, it brought him up against the medical establishment and powerful political forces wrestling with the march of scientific progress. One thing was for certain – a demonic power was clearly at work in the city, attempting to reanimate the dead in a curious parody of the celebrated novel.

ITV Encore Renews ‘The Frankenstein Chronicles’ For Second Season

Quote
ITV Encore has picked up their period drama The Frankenstein Chronicles, starring Sean Bean (Game of Thrones, Legends), for a second season, TVWise has learned. Six episodes have been ordered for the show’s second season.

“The Frankenstein Chronicles certainly resonated with viewers and we’re delighted to be working with Sean Bean, Tracey Scoffield and her production team for a second series,” said ITV’s Controller of Drama Victoria Fea, who commissioned the second season alongside Commissioning Editor Sarah Conroy.

At present the only cast member who is confirmed to be returning is Sean Bean as Inspector John Marlott, with ITV stating that further casting would be confirmed at a later date. Additionally, Sean Bean has been upped to executive producer for the show’s second season, after serving as a co-producer on season one.

The Frankenstein Chronicles was created by Benjamin Ross & Barry Langford and is being produced by Rainmark Films in association with Far Moor. David Tanner is the series producer, while Tracey Scoffield, Sean Bean, Justin Thomson-Glover and Patrick Irwin are the executive producers.

The show’s second season is set to enter production in Northern Ireland in January 2017 and will be receiving funding from Northern Ireland Screen. Endemol Shine International handles global sales. A&E airs the series in the United States.

“We are thrilled to be working once more with Sean Bean in the role of John Marlott, who is a returning hero like no other”, Executive Producer Tracey Scoffield added in a statement. “With the continued support of ITV and Endemol Shine International we want to be more ambitious than ever with Season 2.

ITV recommissions The Frankenstein Chronicles for ITV Encore starring Sean Bean and produced by Rainmark Films

ITV has commissioned a second series of the period crime drama, The Frankenstein Chronicles, starring multi award winning actor Sean Bean from producers Rainmark Films to be screened on ITV Encore.

Taking inspiration from Mary Shelley’s Gothic literary classic, the first series of The Frankenstein Chronicles, captured the imagination of both viewers and critics alike.

“Bold, eerily, effective and chillingly atmospheric,” said the Daily Telegraph, whilst The Guardian felt the drama “offers real, rare shivers” and TV Times critiqued Sean Bean’s characterisation of Inspector John Marlott – “Bean is great as an everyman in a strange world” whilst the drama was considered “deliciously creepy”.

What's with the 7 episodes? Season 1 consisted of 6 episodes. Did they shoot additional footage with a Season 2 in mind?

Sean Bean set for Armagh return in Season Two of Frankenstein Chronicles

Quote
Hollywood star Sean Bean looks set to return to Armagh with confirmation that a second series of the Frankenstein Chronicles is on the cards.

The show – based on a re-imaging of the gothic horror Frankenstein by Mary Shelley – proved a huge global hit.

It was filmed on location across Northern Ireland with many of the scenes shot in Armagh.

The production team had wanted locations which lent itself to the era of the period drama and the historic architecture of Armagh proved just the ticket.

Armagh Courthouse, the Gaol, Russell Street and Vicars Hill were among the backdrops for the unfolding drama.

Gosford Forest Park – which has also been used as a Game of Thrones location – also featured in the Frankenstein Chronicles.

The good citizens of Armagh watched as the action was filmed and got a close-up look at what went into producing such a detailed show.

Now ITV has recommissioned the Frankenstein Chronicles for ITV Encore and it seems almost certain that Armagh will once again feature on the itinerary.

Production of the new series is set to begin on location across Northern Ireland in January 2017.

Full casting details will be kept under wraps and revealed as filming starts.

What's with the 7 episodes?
I think it's just a typo/mistake.

I can't wait for the next season! I cannot imagine where they will go with it. The writing was brilliant last season.

But we saw all six of the episodes. These were the titles of them:

A World Without God
Seeing Things
All the Lost Children
The Fortunes of War
The Frankenstein Murders
Lost and Found

What was the 7th episode? Number one was A World Without God.

The Frankenstein Chronicles is returning for a second series on ITV
     So happy about this.

I just rewatched the whole series, and even knowing the plot already, it is fascinating to watch Sean's face and reactions.

I loved Legends, but watching TFC again, I wondered if Legends would have done better if Sean had been onscreen more (as in TFC) and if the scenes had been taken slower.
