The Frankenstein Chronicles

Frankenstein first order for ITV Encore

Quote

ITV has ordered its first original commission for Sky pay-TV channel Encore, a Sean Bean-fronted drama about Frankenstein.

The broadcaster is working on The Frankenstein Chronicles with Rainmark Films, a feature film producer turned TV indie.

The 6 x 60-minute series is a reworking of the Frankenstein myth - the Mary Shelley story about an eccentric scientist who creates a grotesque creature - that combines a detective drama with a horror thriller.

Game of Thrones star Sean Bean plays Detective John Marlott, the central character who must fight crime, while facing his diabolical foe.

ITV Encore launched exclusively on Sky in June and shows repeats of scripted shows such as Broadchurch and Downton Abbey.

However, director of television Peter Fincham and drama controller Steve November have said that the channel will also air one or two original dramas in its first year.

At ITV’s annual Producers’ Forum in July, November said that he was hunting for two six-part original series for 2015 that contain horror, fantasy and supernatural elements.

He said that they must be “British, accessible and largely optimistic” and that he wasn’t looking for projects that are about “grizzled detectives, dead prostitutes and abused women”.

Rainmark TV

The Frankenstein Chronicles is one of the first TV projects for Rainmark Films, which is run by co-managing directors Tracey Scoffield, who has produced feature films including Dirty Pretty Things and The Other Man, and Frank Doelger, who has produced TV series including Rome and Game of Thrones.

The company has a major drama, created by 12 Years A Slave director Steve McQueen, in development with the BBC and has previously produced BBC2’s Churchill: Into The Storm.

It was also responsible for HBO TV movie The Special Relationship, starring Michael Sheen, which helped it to secure a first-look deal with the Time Warner-backed premium US broadcaster.

Struggling to see how Frankenstein can be seen as 'optimistic'

Would also prefer ITV to think about producing more high quality drama for its terrestrial channels and cut back on the never ending reality drivel

Now this sounds interesting. The 6x60minutes format is much more suitable for him. He tends to create much more interesting characters given the longer format. And it does sound like he'll be the headliner. And its at ITV, so he should feel right at home. ITV has done pretty good by him.

Frankenstein-inspired TV show gets Fox pilot commitment

Quote
The gothic story that keeps on giving has spawned a new TV project, with Fox giving a put pilot commitment to Frankenstein.

Rand Ravich will write and executive produce the show, while Homeland's Howard Gordon is also taking on executive producer duties.

Inspired by Mary Shelley's famous novel of the same name, Frankenstein will focus on Adam Tremble, a corrupt FBI agent who dies and is brought back to life by scientists, reports Deadline.

He then has to decide whether to fall back into his old habits or take on an opportunity given to him by the new lease of life, doing the jobs a normal FBI agent can't.

He also has to deal with complicated relationships with his 'creators' - an antisocial internet billionaire and his twin sister bio-engineer.

A modern UK version of the story is also in the works, to air on ITV Encore, with Sean Bean taking the role of Frankenstein's monster in the show.

I wish that they would just make one television show about Frankenstein and show it in both countries. That
would be cheaper and easier to make. Of course Sean would have to star in it for me to watch it. I'm a little
confused is Sean playing a detective, an agent or the monster ????

ITV commissions The Frankenstein Chronicles starring Sean Bean

Quote

ITV today confirmed commission of The Frankenstein Chronicles, a thrilling and terrifying re-imagining of the Frankenstein myth as a six-part period crime drama to be produced by Rainmark Films.

Incorporating elements from the investigative and horror genres with an extraordinary hero at its centre, Inspector John Marlott, played by multi-awarding winning leading actor Sean Bean (Game of Thrones, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Accused) will be taken on a terrifying journey in pursuit of a chilling and diabolical foe.
Set in Regency London in 1827, The Frankenstein Chronicles has been created by Emmy nominated director and writer Benjamin Ross (The Young Poisoner’s Handbook, Torte Bluma – both as director) and writer Barry Langford (Torte Bluma).

In the drama’s opening sequences, the Home Secretary Sir Robert Peel, following a successful operation by Thames River Police to apprehend a gang of opium smugglers, recruits Marlott.
As he stands on the water’s edge contemplating the arrest of the smugglers, Marlott makes a shocking discovery.  The body of a dead child is washed up on the shore and on further examination of the corpse he is horrified to discover it’s not actually a child but rather a crude assembly of body parts arranged in a grotesque parody of a human form.  The mutilated child-like body leaves an indelible impression on Marlott and he finds himself unable to shake off the memory of what has happened that fateful night.
With a formidable reputation as an investigator, he is known as a man who “doesn’t know the meaning of fear,” so it comes as no surprise when coldly efficient Peel, summons him insisting the “details of your investigation must remain confidential.” And after what he’s witnessed Marlott accepts the challenge to track the perpetrator of this heinous crime.
We follow him as he pursues the crazed killer behind the mutilated body.  As he investigates, Marlott discovers that what he’s dealing with is more horrific than he could possibly have imagined.

Filming will begin in Northern Ireland with funding from Northern Ireland Screen in January 2015 and further information with regard to casting will be announced in due course.
Endemol Worldwide Distribution will be responsible for international sales outside UK/Ireland.

Sounds like a good miniseries!

I wonder what this means for Enemy of Man... Wasn't that supposed to start filming in January?

I'm starting to think it won't get made.

I really like the sound of this as well! Very much looking forward to seeing who else joins the cast.

As well as Enemy of Man, I was wondering what this means for Legends should season 2 get the go ahead...from memory they started filming the season proper around April this year? If they followed a similar schedule I guess Sean could do both without too much trouble.

Whatever happens, looks like a super busy 2015 coming up!

VERY MUCH like the sounds of this one! Beano back in period costume. The type of closed-end project that he likes. Successful history with ITV (Sharpe, Extremely Dangerous, Bravo Two Zero). Yes, indeed, hoping this project moves forward! Plus, there's always the possibility of him returning to the role for another run, if his character survives the ending. This brings to mind Ripper Street and Whitechapel.

Any recent news on this project? It sounds really interesting, I hope the Legends renewal does not get in the way of this.

Is it still scheduled to start filming in January?

Its still set to start in January and he's still attached to it. Its looking to be about 6, possibly 8, episodes which is very common for British drama series, especially period dramas.  Legends won't start filming until late Spring, filming over May/June/July like it did before. Very easy for him to do both.

At least he'll have one familiar face: Charlie Creed-Miles worked with him in Essex Boys. Kate Dickie you'll remember as the whacked-out Lyssa Arryn in GoT. All in all, an interesting cast.
