The Frankenstein Chronicles
This is one for the edge of the seat - a re-imagining of the Frankenstein story

Quote
Get ready for a brand new and exclusive series starting on Wednesday 11th November on ITV Encore starring Sean Bean as Inspector John Marlott, a fearless detective on the hunt for a crazed killer through the dark recesses of London.
This is a thrilling and terrifying re-imagining of the Frankenstein myth as a six-part period crime drama set in Georgian London in 1827, with Marlott making a shocking discovery.
The body of a dead child is washed up on the shore and on further examination of the corpse, he is horrified to discover it’s not actually a child but rather a crude assembly of body parts arranged in a grotesque parody of a human form.

ITV reveal more details on The Frankenstein Chronicles

Quote
The series has been written and directed by Benjamin Ross

“The really good thing about this is that I’ve never shot anything where we’ve been in so many locations, so many fantastic panoramic sets that are real. No studio work, it’s just been travelling every day to a castle or an abbey or cellars underground, cobbled streets. It’s quite astounding and it’s very ambitious to try and do that but it worked really well and it really gives you that expanse of London and things going on above ground and under ground and in back streets, everywhere.

“You feel it’s a really thriving hotch potch of different people, different nationalities and different religions. It was such a volatile time and I think [Benjamin Ross] has captured that beautifully.” – Sean Bean

“I think the thing that will interest audiences about the London of this period is that it’s not Victorian, it’s  pre‐Victorian.  Audiences have grown very familiar with London in Victorian times. This is a London that was still a very small town. It was  pre‐industrial and a lot of it was still medieval in terms of its architecture and in terms of its life. The outskirts of London, which we now think of as the suburbs, were villages. A lot of our story looks quite rural.” – Executive Producer Tracey Scoffield.

ITV seem to be less than helpful - full stop.

They've set up this 'Encore' channel which is subscription only. As far as I can see, hardly anyone has had access to it although it is now being made available via Sky (not much help to me as I don't have pay for TV, only the free channels).

Even old programmes on ITV (like previous episodes of a series that you may have missed) are charged for if you try and access via their ITV player  (unlike the BBCiplayer).

I have a horrible suspicion that viewing figures are going to be on the low side if they don't show this on terrestial ITV after a short interval.

Yes. Or if they don't put it on some platform that you can buy it.

I THOUGHT that I found a page a few days ago on the ITV website that indicated (wasn't all that clear to me) that it would be able to be watched at the same time it is aired for free. On their player. However, now I cannot find the webpage, and have since realised there are like 5 associated sites for ITV. I have no idea where I was. Grrrr. And from what you've written, Annie, I misunderstood anyway. :(

Sean Bean shines in the dark, grimy but absorbing The Frankenstein Chronicles

Quote
“This isn’t a talk bloke with bolts in his head wandering around with his arms extended in front of him,” actor Ed Stoppard said at the press screening of the first episode of The Frankenstein Chronicles.

No, that is true. But The Frankenstein Chronicles does have Sean Bean, and for that we should be thankful.

The legendary Yorkshireman is the star copper of this beguiling and very dark period drama, which takes as its inspiration Mary Shelley’s Gothic classic about the fictional monster, whom Stoppard (who plays shady politico Daniel Hervey) described so eloquently.

Bean is an actor I have always admired. Often mocked by people who should know better, he can carry a show by himself and performs most people off the screen. His John Marlott is gruff, pained, sensitive, fair and decent. A real hero.

It’s London 1827 and bodies of children stitched together keep washing up on the shore. Who is behind it? Is it, as Tom Ward’s gruff home secretary Sir Robert Peel suspects, a conspiracy to blacken the new art of surgery? Or is it, as Bean’s Marlott believes, something even more sinister? Whatever the answer, Marlott is on the case.

This is a brave drama for ITV Encore to show so late at night. It’s slow, grisly, and probably won’t get many viewers, but it’s certainly bold.

Frankenstein author Mary Shelley will appear in later episodes, as will William Blake as himself (I am not sure what the Romantic poet and author of Songs of Innocence and Experience will have to offer, but time will tell.)

Full marks too for some intriguing colour-blind casting – Marlott's partner is Nightingale, played with understated aplomb by black actor Richie Campbell (there is no evidence that London's first police force had anything other than white officers).

And it’s quite funny to see them follow the tropes of modern cop shows in some of their procedural ticks. At one point they meet up not in a pub (a la Morse et al) but in a Regency Coffee House. Well, you would wouldn’t you?

The imagery is bleak, windswept and will require a tough stomach to watch. As for the villain Billy Oates (Robie Gee) we meet in episode one? He is quite a brute.

The show is also, like the bolt-headed stereotype, quite slow. But not slow enough that I won't shuffle on to episode two.

The Frankenstein Chronicles - A World Without God - Advance Preview + Dialogue Teasers

Quote
New period crime drama, The Frankenstein Chronicles, starts Wednesday 11th November on ITV Encore at 10pm, and later in the year on A&E. Starring Sean Bean as John Marlott, a senior river police officer and veteran of the Battle of Waterloo, who is caught up in a ghoulish mystery after discovering the body of a child on the banks of the Thames. The corpse is covered in grotesque stitches, and when he reaches down to touch the young girl’s hand, it reaches out and grabs his first!

Sean Bean is superb as Marlott, a man soldiering on despite his guilty secret and painful past, striving for the underdog to have their justice and keeping the peace. The episode takes it’s time setting up the story, there’s no fast paced action here, but you will find yourself being drawn in to the plot as it delves deeper and probes the character’s oddities and quirks. The atmosphere and setting is gloriously English Gothic, with smoggy lanes, street urchins running amok through market places and plenty of dismembered bodies turning up on dissecting tables.

All in all it’s a solid start to what promises to be a fresh look at the Frankenstein legend, with the promo at the end giving a taster of what’s to come, including the great Mary Shelley herself putting in an appearance. It does feel as though it should be Sunday evening show as opposed to a middle of the week affair, but let’s be real, Sean Bean is a welcome site on my TV any day of the week!

Here are a few dialogue teasers for the opening episode, A World Without God. to whet your appetite:

Richie Campbell Drops Some Wise Words With TBB Ahead of ‘The Frankenstein Chronicles’ Premiere Tonight 10pm on ITV Encore

Quote
Richie Campbell is an interesting young actor who has taken on a wide range of roles on both screen and stage. He read communications and cultural studies at Goldsmith’s and, as a result, thinks quite deeply about his craft. On Wednesday 11th of November 2015, all of his years of hard work should pay dividends, as he takes on a co-starring role alongside acting legend Sean Bean in a lavish gothic drama premiering on ITV Encore (Sky channel 123). It is a truly momentous occasion, since not only is the first episode airing in all Everyman cinemas, but the roles he and fellow recurring cast-member Robbie Gee have taken on could signal a sea of change in independent television casting…

We’re doing press… and obviously, they’re selling the show on Sean Bean – he’s a big star. But, I just thought it’s bad because… none of our people know about the show. I’ve been a part of all those debates where people are saying, “All we have is ‘Top Boy’!” and I was a part of all that [too]…How there’s no black people in period dramas, and now when I’m doing something [set] in 1827, no-one seems to be on it!

The Frankenstein Chronicles
10pm, ITV Encore

Big names gather in misty old London for this gory drama. It’s the 19th century and Inspector John Marlott (Sean Bean) hits the trail of the legendary Frankenstein after he finds what he thinks is the body of a child. The truth is worse: it’s a monster of a corpse stitched together from a variety of body parts. The fearless investigator wades through a world of syphilis, urchin children and a dimly lit Smithfield Market as he searches London for clues to help him crack the crime. Chilling from the start. The real Frankenstein Chronicles: Bodysnatching and reanimating the dead in 19th-century England

Quote
The days are getting shorter, our pyjamas are getting longer and the last echoes of fireworks have reverberated from London's rooftops. It's therefore the perfect time to cosy up to an atmospheric Gothic drama via candlelight, such as Sean Bean's new series The Frankenstein Chronicles. The six-part drama, beginning on Wednesday, 11 November on ITV Encore, has been described as "a thrilling and terrifying reimagining of the Frankenstein Myth set in 19th century London".

Bean plays Inspector John Marlott called in to investigate a series of crimes in the Victorian metropolis, which may have been committed by a scientist intent on reanimating corpses. As a result it focuses on the dark and disturbing history of Victorian body snatchers and the dissection of the dead. The insinuation is that the antagonist of the chronicles is perhaps Victor Frankenstein himself, or a protege of his methods.

The series states that its vision is to "Bring Mary Shelley's Frankenstein back to life" (I wonder if the pun was intended?) and will do so via both the investigative and horror genres.

The original Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus was penned by Mary Shelley when she was only 18 years old and published when she was 20. The idea for the story famously came to her in a waking dream during her stay in Geneva's Villa Diodati with her then lover (and later husband) Percy Bysshe Shelley. Lord Byron, John Polidori and Mary's stepsister Claire Clairmont were also present. Frankenstein was published in London in 1818 and is now known as the first real work of science fiction ... and yet the concept does have its roots in fact.

My agent put me up for it, the casting director has cast me for a couple of other things and I think he thought I was right for it. . .  My breakdown said, “Young, white guy playing alongside Sean Bean, very Sean Bean-esque.”
What? His character is supposed to be Sean Bean-esque? Sean Bean's character is?

Quote
Of course, I have to ask about Sean Bean… the most important thing I need to know is, does he use his Yorkshire accent, or is he going to actually try and put on a London accent? Have they made him from ‘up North’...? Spill the beans! Embargo or not, we have to know!!

Well, because the trailers are out now, I can’t even lie for him! But, he uses his Yorkshire accent.

He has just become Sean Connery, hasn’t he! It must be the name Sean…

This is it… because the setting is London 1827 and there’s a type of vernacular that everyone uses… Now, I’m very London – I’m not ‘street’, but I’ve got a twang. I remember the director saying, “Yeah, we’re gonna have to lose certain things….” My [speaking] voice is quite specific as well, people take the [mick] out of me when I say ‘like’ and ‘why’ and I elongate certain words… so, I was like, “cool, we’re gonna have to knuckle down and do this…” We had a day when we were all supposed to get together to rehearse but it didn’t take place. On-set was the first time we actually worked together properly and I was trying to pronounce my ‘t’s correctly, and he was flinging out the Yorkshire accent… I was like, whoa! OK! Maybe I don’t have to do this!

I know who Sean Connery is, but I don't get the reference. What does it mean?
