Why isn’t season 2 of The Frankenstein Chronicles on Netflix UK?

Only season 1 of The Frankenstein Chronicles dropped on Netflix in the United Kingdom. That’s because ITV is still keeping the streaming rights locked onto their ITV Hub platform. We do expect it to come to Netflix there but it won’t be for several months if not a year.

Worth a watch if you've not seen it yet. Sean Bean as not-Sharpe (but who Sharpe might have become), Mary Shelley, William Blake, and more!

The Frankenstein Chronicles reminds me of the scary movies I used to enjoy watching on television when I was a kid in the 1970s -- more atmospheric horror rather than gruesomely violent like some of today's offerings. I tried to watch a couple episodes of Penny Dreadful on Netflix a few months ago and got turned off very quickly. So I'm definitely keeping my fingers crossed for a third season of John Marlott!

The Frankenstein Chronicles season 3: Will there be another series?
Quote
THE FRANKENSTEIN CHRONICLES season 3 could be in the works following the popularity of the first two runs. Here’s what we know so far about a potential new series

Will there be another season of The Frankenstein Chronicles?

There’s no official word on whether The Frankenstein Chronicles will be renewed for a third season just yet.

The gothic drama, which is inspired by the classic Mary Shelley novel is currently being repeated on ITV but Netflix has acquired the rights to distribute the series in the US.

So it looks like the streaming giant could be in talks with ITV for plans for a third run.

When will The Frankenstein Chronicles season 3 be released?

It’s difficult to predict when a potential third season will come out.

Season two of the Sean Bean series came out last November on ITV Encore after a two-year hiatus.

If a new season is commissioned soon, it probably wouldn’t come out until 2019 at the earliest.

Perhaps Netflix’s involvement will see an announcement made soon.

Wishful thinking or........?

So I have been rewatching this series on Netflix recently. Third time through season 1 and second through season 2. I am just blown away by how great it really is. How did this show go unnoticed by BAFTA and the Emmys? Everything, from the production design, the musical score, the acting, the directing.... It's all phenomenal. Really one of my favourite projects of his.

‘The Frankenstein Chronicles’ Leaving Netflix in February 2022
Quote
Why is The Frankenstein Chronicles leaving Netflix?
Netflix acquired the global rights to The Frankenstein Chronicles after the second season had aired. Both seasons were simultaneously released on Netflix on February 20th, 2018. Now, four years later, that license is up despite it carrying the Netflix Original branding. It’s leaving on February 20th meaning your last full day to watch is on February 19th.

At the time, it was believed that should the show do well on Netflix it could potentially get more seasons produced. In the Variety report mentioned above, they state:

“The Frankenstein Chronicles” deal opens the way for Netflix to make further seasons should it resonate with its U.S. and global subscribers. The streaming service also has the second season of “Medici,” which will feature Bean.

It’s worth noting that A&E was given broadcast rights in the United States.

You may be thinking “wait, why is a Netflix Original leaving” and you’d be right to think that. Unlike Amazon Prime, Netflix doesn’t differentiate its Original libraries into just exclusive and actual original content. In this case, Netflix simply licensed the show on an exclusive basis for what now is known to be four years.

Where will The Frankenstein Chronicles stream next?
That’s unclear right now. If we were putting money on its next streaming home, we’d guess that ITV will opt to license it to BritBox which it has a vested interest in. Otherwise, it’ll go to the highest bidder. There is a chance, as we’ve seen with other Netflix Original departures, that the series just isn’t available on SVOD services. In which case, you’ll need to seek out physical or VOD copies.
