Thanks Lab183 for your reply.

I should say that I thought Sean was wasted in the Martian simply because he is too fine an actor to be thrown away on small roles that require little of him. It wasn't his fault, it was just that his part in the film was so under-written that there was nothing to do with but don the argyll slipover and look like a nice guy. I wish that he would pick up something meatier than this. I can't help feeling that he's getting ready for retirement and no longer cares much what he does. He's entered the big league of bit parts - a sort of 'cult' actor who everyone enjoys spotting on screen but who seems to have dropped off the list of actors who are capable of carrying a whole film (or indeed even a properly well-written character cameo).

His contemporaries (Ken Branagh, Colin Firth, Stephen Rea etc) are all suddenly landing the kind of interesting stage and screen character roles that are great for middle age. Where is Sean among them?

This to me is an really a great pity.

The Stories Behind the Casting of Room, Hateful Eight, and 4 Other Oscar Movies

Quote
THE MARTIAN
Ridley Scott's The Martian often feels like a throwback to the Hollywood films of yore, and not just because of its optimistic, can-do spirit; like '70s disaster films Airport and The Towering Inferno, it's filled to the brim with famous people. (In 2013, Chiwetel Ejiofor was the lead in a Best Picture winner. Here he is the tenth-highest-billed actor.) The Martian's cavalcade of stars was a way to make every member of the film's stacked ensemble "pop" for the audience, as Carmen Cuba, who cast the film alongside Nina Gold, explained. "We were really trying to make sure that each person playing each role was very distinct in as many ways as possible, even more than usual," Gold told Vulture over email. As the film's action jumps between Matt Damon on Mars, the astronauts on the ARES spaceship, and the crew back at NASA, having recognizable actors like Sean Bean in supporting roles helped keep everyone from blurring together, as they sometimes do on Bean's old show.

Having a familiar face pop up in every scene also made the jargon-heavy bits of the script go down easier. "Because there was a lot of science talk," Cuba says, "we also wanted actors who would feel slightly surprising." That way, the film could go deep into the weeds of Mark Watney's science adventures without it feeling, she says, "like homework." But finding actors who could handle all of the technical terms was a challenge of its own. Some would sail through the movie's light banter only to trip over the multisyllabic space-verbiage; others could play the science like experts but then come off too heavy or too cold.

Is The Martian an action film? A sci-fi movie? A comedy, as the Golden Globes decided? The right answer, of course, is all of the above

Thank you Patch !!! However I'm a bit confused by the comment about the characters being blurred together as
they sometimes do on Bean's old show. So are we talking about Sharpe or GOT ???

Game of Thrones. If you click through to the article, the words "Bean's old show" are a live link that take you to a bunch of GoT photos.

An Extended Edition Of The Martian Is In The Works And May Be Arriving Much Sooner Than Later

Quote
It sounds like that long-rumored extended cut of Ridley Scott's The Martian might finally be on the way and it could be arriving a lot earlier than you would've expected.
20th Century Fox's The Martian was easily one of the best and most successful films of 2015, garnering seven Academy Award nominations, including nominations for Best Picture & Best Actor, three Golden Globe nominations, which resulted in two wins, and acclaim from both fans and critics alike. It was also no slouch at the box office as by the end of its run, it had collected an impressive $629.3 million ($228.4m domestic, $400m foreign).

A few months ago, it was widely rumored that the critically acclaimed Ridley Scott-directed film would be receiving an Extended Director's Cut on Blu-ray, a practice that is fairly commonplace amongst Scott's films, however, when the film arrived on home video in early January, there was no additional cut included and there was no futher mention of the cut anywhere remotely official... well until now that is.

The folks over at The Digital Bits have learned directly from representatives of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment that a Director's Cut of The Martian, tentatively titled The Martian: Special Edition, is very much in the works and will be arriving in stores much sooner than later and definitely before year's end. How soon exactly? Well, just last week, the Australian retailer EzyDVD had listed The Martian: Extended Cut on their website with a June 8 release date before promptly removing it, so read into that what you will. It's probably best to take this news with a small grain of salt until something official is announced, but things are certainly looking good for fans that want to see more of Matt Damon (Jason Bourne) sciencing the s**t out of Mars.

20th Century Fox Officially Announces THE MARTIAN: Extended Edition Blu-ray; Release Date & Cover Art Revealed

Quote
20th Century Fox's The Martian, which starred Academy Award-winner Matt Damon (Jason Bourne) in the lead, was one of the biggest critical and commercial successes of 2015. The film earned seven Academy Award nominations, including nominations for Best Picture & Best Actor, and three Golden Globe nominations, which resulted in two wins. At the box office, the film was a massive success, earning over $629.3 million worldwide ($228.4m domestic, $400m foreign).

After months of vague rumors and reports, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has finally confirmed that an Extended Edition for Ridley Scott's critically acclaimed The Martian is on the way and it'll be here on June 7. It will be available on the following formats: 4K UltraHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, & Digital HD.

The Martian: Extended Edition will add 10 minutes of brand new footage to the film and will also include over two hours of never before seen behind-the-scenes content, including audio commentary by director Ridley Scott, writer/executive producer Drew Goddard, and author Andy Weir. Additionally, the new edition will feature deleted scenes, unlike the Standard Edition, and there will also be a documentary detailing the science behind recreating Mars; interviews with NASA specialists & engineers; and a Q&A panel discussion about the planned journey to Mars with commentary from NASA experts. It's unclear whether the special features from the Standard Edition will carry over to the Extended Edition, but there's a fairly decent chance they will.

NEW Special Features Content: • Audio Commentary by Ridley Scott (Director), Drew Goddard (Writer, Exec Producer) and Andy Weir (Author of The Martian)
• Deleted Scenes
• The Long Way Home: Making the Martian
• Dare Mighty Things: NASA's
• Journey to Mars Journey to Mars 101 Q&A

The Martian Extended Cut Includes 11 New Scenes, Here's What Happens In Them

Quote
When you've got a runaway hit like The Martian on your hands, the home video release can serve as a perfect opportunity to double your money. Enter the "Extended Edition" strategy, which in the case of Ridley Scott's resume is a fairly common occurrence. In the case of The Martian, around 10 minutes of footage was reinstated into the film. In addition to the footage that was included, there's two deleted scenes that were never even put back into the film!

Mark Watney's Blunt Response - 58:06

During the first sequence in The Martian where Mark and the Pathfinder team start to communicate, there are a couple of moments added back in. For starters, the snarky JPL tech gets some more words in edgewise. More importantly though, when Mark finds out he's live on TV, and his crew doesn't know he's alive, Watney deploys a colorful insult towards his superiors. We see both Benedict Wong's Bruce and Sean Bean's Mitch Henderson react to said insult, as Watney apparently called them all "bureaucratic felchers." It may not be a huge moment, but it's a good character moment that generates laughs between Earth and Mars' communications. Also, take Sean Bean's advice, and don't Google that term
