Upcoming science fiction movie The Martian has a lot going for it, with a massive budget, director Ridley Scott, and a cast including Matt Damon, Jeff Daniels, Sean Bean and more. How, you ask, could the hype possibly be ramped up more? By creating a "documentary" about the space mission with the world's most famous figure in space theory.
Jeff Daniels has been discussing his work on Ridley Scott’s forthcoming film, The Martian, and sounds in awe of the sheer scale of the production, describing the set’s as nothing short of “phenomenal”.“It was a chance to work with, in particular, Ridley Scott.” explains Daniels to Deadline. “I just look at that guy as… I didn’t get to work with John Ford but it’s like I imagine that to be. Howard Hawks, Billy Wilder, great veteran Hollywood directors. John Huston. Ridley so is on top of it. It’s a big production, Martian. I mean, just the set for Mission Control in Houston was… I just wanted to take pictures of it. It’s just phenomenal.” “But Ridley’s not intimidated by that at all,” he continues. “He’s going, ‘yeah, it’s good, that’s going to work.’ He’s got cranes, he’s got how many cameras, I mean, the guy completely knows what he’s doing and that’s a joy. I’m one of the heads of NASA and basically, I’m the guy who has to make the decision as to whether we try to save Matt Damon or strand him.” “I’m certainly the antagonist probably. He’s the guy that’s got to say, ‘do I risk killing however many, eight astronauts, trying to save one, or do I let one die and save the other eight?’” Co-starring Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kristen Wiig, The Martian will open in the UK on September 30, 2015 and the US on October 2, 2015.
Could Bean's role in this finally reel in some well overdue recognition at the Oscars?
26. “The Martian” (Fox)At this point many of us would just settle for Ridley Scott making another good film. Projects like "Prometheus" and "The Counselor" have their quirky fans, but you probably have to go back to "American Gangster" to find a work from the director that satisfied broadly. Tapping Andy Weir's populist novel "The Martian" was a good step and the craft he brings from a team that has stuck by him for a while now could make the end result a great time at the movies. Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain headline a starry cast. —Kristopher Tapley

Seriously. I wonder if the filmmakers have realized that yet. They must have. They'd be foolish not to take advantage of that fact.Book Quote:"What the fuck is 'Project Elrond'?" Annie asked."I had to make something up," Venkat said."So you came up with 'Elrond'?" Annie pressed."Because it's a secret meeting?" Mitch guessed. "The email said I couldn't even tell my assistant.""I'll explain everything once Teddy arrives." Venkat said."Why does 'Elrond' mean 'secret meeting'?" Annie asked."Are we going to make a momentous decision?" Bruce Ng asked."Exactly," Venkat said."How did you know that?" Annie asked, getting annoyed."Elrond," Bruce said. "The Council of Elrond. From Lord of the Rings. It's the meeting where they decide to destroy the One Ring.""Jesus," Annie said. "None of you got laid in high school, did you?"I've not seen this talked about before. I just find this really funny and wildly interesting.
We're all looking forward to The Martian, mostly because the promos to date have been brilliantly well-made - and we're trying to forget about every recent film director Ridley Scott has made at the same time. Anyway, today's video mash up takes the audio from the latest trailer for The Martian and mixes it all together with a great selection of footage from Pixar's WALL-E. You will believe he has Matt Damon's voice.
The first showing of "The Martian" is this Friday night at TIFF (Toronto Film Festival). He is not on any of the confirmed to be attending lists at this time. Will the shooting be for LEGENDS even be finished by then?

Whether you’re a hardcore science fiction fan, a science geek, or just love a romping adventure flick, you’re probably looking forward to the October 2 broad release of “The Martian“, one of the year’s most hotly anticipated movies. Starting today, Microsoft will be right there with you, offering up a host of fun and informative activities to help build interest in the movie while offering opportunities to learn about Mars and space. As posted on the Microsoft News Center blog, the company has partnered with 20th Century Fox to create The Hacking Mars Design Challenge:The Hacking Mars Design Challenge invites teams to research and submit a three-to-five minute video about a product, service, app or game that would help Watney: stay alive (grow food, filter air, produce water), pass time (keeping hope alive, dealing with extreme isolation and constant stress) and get home (focusing on communication issues). They can tackle one topic or take on all three. The deadline for entries is Oct. 13.The challenge website provides steps, instructions, a toolkit and other resources for the challenge. Participants will be able to tap into Microsoft experts via Skype and watch videos related to the film. Another big bonus: custom-made videos from Fox containing interviews with the novel’s author, Andy Weir, talking about the challenges Watney faces on Mars as they relate to those three topics. The contest is open to anyone 18 years or older anywhere in the world, and three finalists will travel to Microsoft HQ and compete for a price package of $25,000 and a nice package of Microsoft products including Surface, Xbox One, and Microsoft Band. The contest is aimed at STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math) students, but anyone can participate.
