Gold Standard For Golden Globes, 'Martian' and 'Joy' are comedies, 'Trumbo' moves to drama

The Martian" is a comedy. As is David O. Russell's upcoming movie, "Joy."

So says the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn.'s eligibility committee, which, in a vote, decided to keep both films just where 20th Century Fox wanted them for the upcoming Golden Globes awards.

You made a movie in which Sean Bean doesn’t die, but you do have the next best thing...

That’s right, he has the worst misfortunate other than the hero. No-one else gets fired. It’s a NASA death (laughs).

So there’s no forgiveness for his character’s actions?

Well, I think that’s in there. One of the things I liked about that scene in particular is that Sean knows that what he’s doing is going to get him fired, and Jeff [Daniels] knows why Sean does it, so they both respect where the other is coming from. However, the consequences have to be obeyed, otherwise we have no moral order. I like that they both have two very reasonable [perspectives], and that’s partly why we wanted to show Sean enjoying his retirement, playing golf with his grandson. He’s okay with that as well (laughs).

 The Council of Elrond scene is a crowdpleaser but is it true that it nearly got cut?

It’s an eight-page scene and that’s usually a no-no. Usually you’re going to end up cutting it later, so you don’t want to shoot it. If you think that you’ve got to cut three pages from the eight-page scene, you can’t cut the discussion they’re having because that’s the point of [the scene], so the only thing you really can cut is the fun – which, by the way, is what happens all the time. Ridley point out that that could be cut. Even as the writer you think, ‘Yeah, you’re probably right.’ If the director is telling you the scene is too long, it’s going to be too long. God bless him, our executive Steve Aswell said, ‘No, no, no’.

If you get a laugh that big, it almost starts the scene over for the audience.

That’s what we realised. Ridley solved that problem by making it feel like three different scenes, blocking the actors in such a way that they move so it’s not just a bunch of people sitting around a table, which is how it was written.

There’s a nod to Alien, too. Are those meta moments something you’re wary of as a screenwriter?

You just try to feel it out. I try not to get too cute for cute’s sake. The Elrond reference was there before we cast Sean Bean, and when we cast Sean Bean we wondered if we should change it because it might seem we were getting too clever, but we just liked it. The reason it’s important to have references in The Martian is that you need to tell audiences that this isn’t some crazy future time, this was today. Well, it’s 20 years in the future but it’s still our culture. If you go to NASA, people love Lord Of The Rings.

‘The Martian’ TV Spot Reveals January Blu-ray Release Date

After raking in more than $545 million in theaters this fall, fans can get ready to bring The Martian home on Digital HD later this month. Fox Home Entertainment has provided us with a new TV spot that reveals The Martian will be released on Digital HD December 22, before Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD January 12. This trailer reveals part of Mark Watney's (Matt Damon) harrowing journey as he tries to make it back to Earth after being left for dead on the Red Planet.

CES: 'The Martian' Becomes Fastest-Selling Live Action Digital HD Title With One Million Copies Sold

The Digital HD version of the Ridley Scott-directed sci-fi film starring Matt Damon was released on Dec. 22.


Twentieth Century Fox's The Martian — director Ridley Scott's highest grossing film with nearly $600 million worldwide — has sold one million Digital HD units since its Dec. 22 release, making it the quickest-selling live action Digital HD title to reach that milestone, Fox reported during CES.

The Digital HD release contains more than 90 minutes of special features including an exclusively produced retrospective starring Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Sean Bean covering the “true” story behind the rescue, as well as two making of documentaries and a gag reel.

The film will be released Jan. 12 on 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD.

“This is the clearest indicator yet that consumers are embracing digital and it’s now a natural part of the purchase consideration for movie ownership,” said Mary Daily, president and CMO of worldwide marketing at Fox Home Entertainment.

‘The Martian’ Wins Best Motion Picture Comedy at 2016 Golden Globes

The Martian won Best Motion Picture Comedy at the 2016 Golden Globes on Sunday.

Ridley Scott's sci-fi, survival adventure stars Matt Damon as astronaut Mark Watney who gets abandoned by his crew on Mars. The rest of the ensemble features Kate Mara, Jessica Chastain, Kristin Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Michael Pena, Sean Bean, Sebastian Stan, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Aksel Hennie. The Martian beat Joy, Spy, Trainwreck and The Big Short for Best Motion Picture Comedy/Musical.

In his acceptance speech Scott thanked his cast and also mentioned his late brother Tony Scott. Earlier in the night, Damon won for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Comedy. Scott was also nominated for Best Director.

Oscars 2016 nominations list revealed: The Revenant, Mad Max: Fury Road lead

Nominations for the 88th Oscars were announced Thursday morning, with The Revenant capturing the most nominations.

The Martian earned seven nominations in total (including for best actor Matt Damon, though not director Ridley Scott)

 The awards will be handed out on Feb. 28 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, beginning at 7 p.m. ET on ABC.

And the fact that Sir Ridley was totally snubbed is the most ridiculous thing about this whole fiasco of an awards show. They need a totally new Oscar process! I will not be watching it and if Sean goes, I will just wait for pix after the fact.

  Extras mainly focus on extending the story of “The Martian” through about 30 minutes of really fun, faux segments highlighting the crew training and at work along with a deeper look at the mission.

Best of the bunch is the tabloid expose, “Ares III: The Untold Story,” covering the behind-the-scenes bureaucracy that nearly sealed the fate of Mark Watney.

An ominous narrator pipes in throughout the 17-minute piece that features intense interviews with Mr. Henderson (describing his ultimate assist to Mr. Watney as stealing the Death Star plans away from Darth Vader), Mr. Sanders and Mr. Kapoor and viewing recently declassified mission photos.

I'm not sure I think Ridley Scott deserves an Oscar for the Martian particularly. Or Matt Damon for that matter. I enjoyed the film well enough (though I thought Sean wasted in it: he seemed barely to be acting at all) - but I think any honours should go to the cinematographer.

I agree about the cinematographer. While I do not think Sean was completely "wasted" in it, he is always deserving of more screen time.

I am glad Matt Damon got a nomination. I don't think he should win, but he was required to act alone, none of his cast mates were with him. I can't even begin to imagine how difficult that was. Tom Hanks had to do the same thing in the movie,"Castaway". He also was nominated but didn't win. I look at this as a sign of respect from his fellow actors.

I think Sir Ridley Scott completely deserves his nomination and I really hope he wins also. If he wins, it would be because the Oscar Academy is finally acknowledging his body of work, not just this one movie. But, also his directing in this movie is simply brilliant also. He took a script which could have very easily been made to resemble any other sci fi piece of action/special effects fluff and really brought out the heart of an extremely human story. Instead of going for the 12- 21 age group of boys, he made this movie appeal to all. I think that is very Oscar worthy just in itself.
