Lakeshore Records will release a soundtrack album for the biblical drama The Young Messiah. The album features the film’s original music composed by Academy Award nominee John Debney (The Passion of the Christ, Iron Man 2, Elf, The Jungle Book). The soundtrack will be released physically and digitally on February 26, 2016.
... it combines the latest and best in filmmaking, the dramatic arts, mature biblical scholarship, theology and imagination. It is biblically and theologically sound (always a tricky task when speaking about Jesus, but even more so the Child Jesus and his "human knowledge"--what did he/didn't he allow himself to know in his humanity?) There has been some talk that "apocryphal writings" inspired some scenes. "Apocryphal" does not mean "Gnostic." The apocryphal Proto-Evangelium of James was used by early Christians as devotional reading. But it's not the Word of God.Big, big money must have been thrown at this production--just from the looks of the sets and extras. The music starts off as standard Bible movie music, but then gets a bit more diverse and disappears into the film, adding to the overall excellence of the experience. He (Herod) sends his centurion (Sean Bean)--who was also present at Bethlehem and carried out the slaughter--to find and kill the boy Jesus. This constant believable danger, with its attending intrigue and narrow escapes make for an urgency to the whole film.DO NOT WATCH THE TRAILER. GIVES A BIT TOO MUCH AWAY!
....I was lucky enough to visit the set at CineCitta’ in Rome in November 2014 during the filming. My review will follow – and if I can locate my photos from that set visit – it was awesome from how they created the city of Alexandria in Egypt to the costumes.https://vimeo.com/153846970
And the story adds a dramatic stakes of life and death with a Roman centurion played by Sean Bean hunting down the elusive child on orders from Herod Antipas to kill him (because of the failure of his father to do so at the Slaughter of Innocents in Bethlehem years earlier). This was a brilliant addition to the story that was not in the novel, but makes the story more exciting as a movie. (Of course, it’s hard to make the danger seem real cause we know that he won’t ultimately kill Jesus, but the drama and suspense are still entertaining, as is the centurion’s own spiritual journey, since he had participated in the original Slaughter of Innocents).
The soaring symphonic music behind The Young Messiah is the work of Oscar-nominated composer John Debney, who scored The Passion of the Christ and Iron Man 2, as well as, Disney's upcoming release, The Jungle Book. Nowrasteh believes it is Debney's contribution to this cinematic look at Jesus' childhood that completes the film.
The film follows the young boy Jesus as his parents, Joseph and Mary, journey back from Egypt to Israel. Along the way, they discover more about Jesus' powers of healing, and discover that not everyone is keen on what Jesus is capable of. One of those nefarious characters is Herod, who sends a centurion (Sean Bean) to eradicate Jesus one way or another. A few years ago, Nowrasteh's co-screenwriter (and spouse) read Anne Rice's series about Jesus' early years, including Christ the Lord. "I never imagined I'd end up making the story," he admitted. "But the story ended up in our hands and we did a lot of research. We talked to scholars, pastors, friends and built on the immense amount of research Anne Rice had already done. When it came time to cast, Nowrasteh was looking for mostly unknowns. "We looked at hundreds of boys and the one we cast was far and away the best. Not everyone was keen on the film because they were afraid of being typecast. But it all revolved around the boy - and Sean Bean's gravitas from his role on things like Game of Thrones certainly helped."

When I went to see “The Young Messiah” I was skeptical. I tried to read Anne Rice’s book this movie is based on, Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt, and was not impressed with some of the theology based on the Gnostic, apocryphal Infancy Gospel of St. Thomas. But the movie changed the events I had found concerning, and kept the excellent writing and character development. This movie moved me, and got me thinking for days afterward. The little boy who plays Jesus does an amazing job. So, basically, I am in agreement with Sr. Helena’s effusive review. EXCEPT, this movie is not the best Jesus movie ever. Jesus of Nazareth has not been dethroned. I hope you go see this movie, I really, really enjoyed it and am thrilled to be able to recommend a Christian movie with unqualified enthusiasm, (it doesn’t happen that often). – Sr. Theresa Aletheia

In Anne Rice’s novel, through the first-person voice of young Jesus, you sense a threat of danger and chaos from the Roman occupation, from Herod, from the rebels, from the civil war. In the movie, we have to say, “How do we show this?” How can we make it interesting, make it a journey?Of course we didn’t invent this idea of a Roman who could be touched by Christ. We just thought this is a different angle: This is a guy who was actually at the slaughter of the innocents, who is haunted by that, and now is being asked to kill a child again. We just felt that it was natural and that it worked. Did casting Sean Bean in that role have any impact on the character or the story?Only in the sense that while we were writing it I wanted Sean Bean for the part. I consider it one of the high points of my career working with Sean Bean, for a whole slew of reasons. One of which is I was a fan, going back many years now, to when he did the Sharpe series. The opportunity to work with him came to us in the writing of this part. He just has the gravitas and the presence and the acting chops. He was a delight to work with. Sean is very focused, very quiet, very to himself, very internal. That’s one of the reasons he’s a great actor: He’s thinking.
Just hanging with #SeanBean #work

Doing CPAC in DC today for #TheYoungMessiah where we screen tonight at 7 PM. I'll be doing a Q & A after
On set, smoke rose from the torches lighting the Temple, straw covered the ground, and various birds filled carts in the Temple courtyard. A crane with elaborate lighting dangled over the structure. One of the producers, Mark Radcliffe, was buzzing around the set, and said they decided to let Adam “rest for a bit.” Radcliffe has worked with many child actors over his career, from the Home Alone movies to Harry Potter, so he knew they couldn’t push Adam too much. The crew began with filming a scene without Adam, one where Roman centurion Severus (Sean Bean) questions passersby at the Temple about Jesus’ whereabouts. “Here we go, SHHHHHH,” yelled a crew member as Bean’s scene started. “Silenzio per favore!” yelled an Italian crew member. “Action!” Cyrus ordered. Bean and Clive Russell, who plays his slave Weer, wove through a sea of extras. The air smelled of hay and smoke from the flames burning in the Temple. “Cut cut cut,” Cyrus said, asking one family of extras to take a different path and sending Russell and Bean on a path over the camera tracks. These minor details consume a director’s day.
The character that needs more depth to give the story emotional punch is Severus (Sean Bean), the Roman centurion sent to find the reported Messiah and kill Him. “We had to be careful not to let [Severus’ story] dominate,” Nowrasteh told me. “His story is only pertinent in relation to the family and the boy.” The movie has a PG-13 rating for “violence and thematic elements,” a harsh rating for a film with minimal violence. The DVD release will have a PG version.
