Ripper Street heads back to BBC One after getting axed

The show set in the aftermath of the Jack the Ripper murders in London's East End was cancelled by the BBC in 2013 after two series.

However after a strong campaign from Ripper Street devotees, the period drama was saved when it was picked up by internet streaming service Amazon Prime.

The third series is already available to watch on Amazon but will be going back to its terrestrial TV roots.

Ripper Street has proved to be so popular on Amazon that it has been recommissioned for the fourth and fifth series.

The news was announced back in May and the new series promised that the three characters would be "embarking on another dose of Ripper Street - blood and guts, pocket watches and Victorian head-gear, wonderfully dark, moving and mysterious story lines".

Ripper Street series 3 starts on BBC One on Friday July, 31
