So now I'm a little concerned about this role for SEAN because he's a catholic priest who seems to have NO emotional involvement with the people in his church. Is McGovern trying to
say that it's Not the priest that helps people, but it's the people's faith in GOD that solves their problems ??? Is an average audience going to understand that ???

BROKEN is getting closer…
Quote
An interview with Anna Friel in the Sunday supplements said the new Jimmy McGovern series, BROKEN, is coming to BBC 1 soon.

I was delighted to see this tweet this afternoon that it’s already winning awards.

I’m in 4 episodes, not a huge role, but I play Sean Bean’s brother, so it’s a great part.

I’ll let you know more as details are released.

So is there a release date for Broken yet? Obviously it would be the UK release date as I'm sure it won't come to the US for god knows how long. Though perhaps it will be available online at some point.

Ep 1/6
Sean Bean stars as Father Michael Kerrigan, a Catholic priest presiding over a Northern urban parish, in Jimmy McGovern’s new landmark six-part drama.

Modern, maverick, and reassuringly flawed, Father Michael is a man who must be confidante, counsellor and confessor to a community struggling to reconcile its beliefs with the realities of daily life in contemporary Britain.

After mass, Father Michael meets Christina Fitzsimmons (Anna Friel), a mother of three who works at the local betting shop, and is saving money for her daughter's First Communion. But when her attendance in Church sparks an unfortunate chain of events, she is left with no way to feed her children and keep a roof over their heads. Pushed to the edge when tragedy strikes, Christina makes a desperate plan to alleviate her situation. Will she go through with it, or can Father Michael - suspicious that all may not be as it seems - offer the family a lifeline?

Elsewhere, Father Michael visits his mother and brothers, sparking memories of his childhood, and revealing that he is a man with secret struggles of his own.

‘Catholic preoccupation with sin is perfect training for a writer’ – Jimmy McGovern

Quote
He is renowned for bleak, bruising and brilliant dramas from Hillsborough and Cracker to The Lakes, Accused and last year’s blistering take on the consequences of the Iraq war, Reg. But Jimmy McGovern says that he might not have become a writer had he not been raised in the Catholic faith with its particular attention to the nature of sin.

Broken follows Sean Bean’s Father Michael Kerrigan, the parish priest in an impoverished working-class community (the series was filmed in the Kirkdale district of Liverpool), as he struggles to make a difference in his parishioners’ lives, while coming to terms with his own past and vocation. It’s a series McGovern has been trying to write “since the 80s”, coming closest in the 1994 film Priest, which examines the strictures of the church and the nature of doubt.

“I said from the outset that Broken is the story of a good priest. He doesn’t abuse boys, he doesn’t chase women, he doesn’t even drink – I think the most we see him have is half a glass of wine over the whole series – and that was very important to me. It’s a story of atonement, what it means and how it can be a lifelong thing.”

Broken, which will be shown in a primetime slot on BBC1 later this year, could be seen as something of a risk given the largely secular society we live in and the relatively small number of Catholics in the UK, something McGovern acknowledges with a laugh. “Because I was bought up in a Catholic community I thought everyone was Catholic – I was well into my 30s before I realised that we were only 10% of the country. Until then I thought we ran the show.”

He is confident, however, that those who have no experience of Catholicism or organised religion will gain as much from the story as those raised in the faith. Certainly many of the show’s themes – poverty, debt, addiction, the strain that caring for the sick and elderly can place on family relationships – are universal and a strong cast, which includes Adrian Dunbar and Anna Friel, ensure that Broken is not about arcane mysteries so much as the ordinary realities of life.

Broken is unflinching in its depiction of a community torn apart by poverty. Kerrigan’s parishioners work in “shitty jobs” with zero-hours contracts and minimal pay. They are repeatedly let down or ignored by the structures of the society in which they live, leaving only their wavering faith and the parish priest to sustain them: in the opening episode Kerrigan offers a struggling parishioner not prayers but food vouchers.
“It’s not about smells and bells but about a priest who is working on the coalface, doing real muscular work within his community,” says McGovern.

“In the north-west, and especially in Liverpool, we have some wonderful priests who do important work with alcoholics and the homeless and who are at the heart of their communities, standing alongside them and helping them. Somebody said that the art of priesthood is to keep your mouth shut and your ears open and I think that’s very true. You wouldn’t last five minutes if you went to these people and preached at them.”

He admits Bean, who gives a sensitive and at times devastating portrayal of a good man in crisis, initially struggled with Kerrigan’s perceived passivity, the way in which he appears to stand by as people he cares for are dragged under by troubles. “I got quite exercised about that and said: ‘Do not think hearing confession is passive. You don’t just listen – you take those sins. The penitent leaves the confessional box lighter and you leave it heavier.’”
Part of the appeal for both men lay in the way that a priest can know so much about his parishioners’ lives yet is bound not to act on it. “The confessional is the one situation in which you know that one person is telling the absolute truth and the other person will never reveal a single word, will in fact go to their death without revealing a single word. Even a lawyer or analyst doesn’t have that.”

Is he worried about how devout Catholics will perceive it? “No, I think they’ll like it,” he says with a laugh. “We had a priest as an adviser throughout and when we had the read-through of the final episode there were also a few priests around and when I looked up after the final scene, which I like to think is a good scene, one or two of those priests were crying and not tears of anger. They were genuinely moved.”

“It might ruffle a few feathers but that’s our job as writers – to be a bit mischievous, to ruffle feathers, to ask awkward questions. It doesn’t pull its punches and it’s not for everybody but if you stay with it then it is uplifting. It’s about a man who believes he has not lived a worthwhile life and yet who learns he has. It’s about reconciliation, redemption and hope.”

Interview with Jimmy McGovern
Quote
Tell us about the casting of Sean Bean
I really wanted Sean for the part of Father Michael Kerrigan. It’s about the only time I’ve ever said “get this guy” for a role I’ve written. Mainly because he’s a working class man and he’s full of humanity, and that’s what I wanted in the character.

I also knew how good Sean Bean is, because I worked with him on The Accused. I knew he wasn’t just a good actor - he is a great actor. Truly great.

When I was trying to convince Sean to play the role there was a moment where he mentioned that it’s a character who is passive and listens. I said that’s not passive - he doesn’t listen to people’s sins, he takes them on. After Confession a priest goes out heavier, while the other person goes out lighter. And then I started jumping round the room telling Sean what confession means and how active it is. How, as the priest, you are more active and I think it was that which convinced him.

Interview with Adrian Dunbar
Quote
How did you get involved with this series?
I met Sean Bean for a drink, is how this story starts! I’ve known him for years and I hadn’t seen him for a while, so we caught up in Camden. He told me he was doing 'this piece by Jimmy McGovern', and of course the minute you hear 'Jimmy McGovern' as an actor your ears prick up.

It’s a bit like coming full circle for me, because I was in the first episode of Cracker, which was basically the show which really broke Jimmy into full-time telly and being taken extremely seriously. So of course I was very interested when Sean told me there was a part in it; a character who Father Michael comes to every now and then as a sounding board and confessor, and someone he bounces ideas off or chats to as a friend. I thought, that sounds really good, and if it’s Jimmy it’ll definitely be good! You only need to take a look at the first two or three episodes to realise how fabulous it is and what a quality piece of work it is. So it was a no-brainer for me.

Hollywood hardman star Sean Bean reveals why he was terrified of playing a priest in new role
Quote

Hardman Sean Bean has had his fair share of tough roles – but the one that scared him the most was playing a Catholic priest.

The Game of Thrones star, 58, says he was cautious about taking the part of Father Michael Kerrigan in Broken, the brilliant new drama from Cracker creator Jimmy McGovern.

Starting on BBC1 a week on Tuesday, Broken is a brutal drama about a Northern community struggling with their faith and to put food on the table.

Troubled Father Michael has to try to be there for everyone and offer help when tragedy strikes.

I’ve had dealings with priests and churches but I’d never really thought about playing a priest,” says Sean.

“I’ve been in church and seen priests, but when you’re up there, looking the other way and you’ve got the vestment on, it’s quite a different story, let me tell you.

"I found it quite nerve-wracking the first time. I wanted to get everything right – I guess that’s the thing. It took me a little while to relax into the part.”

Scouse writer Jimmy says getting Sean on board made him tear up his original scripts for the drama, in which Anna Friel plays mum Christina Fitzsimmons.

Jimmy had planned to have a different story about a different character each week, as he did in The Street a decade ago – but was determined to get Sean in as many episodes as possible.

He said: “Sean was my wildest dream. He is not a good actor – he is a great actor, one of our finest. I think this is one of his best performances.

“The penalty of getting him is you have to use him, you have to get enough of him. So we have stories coming in episode 1 and leaving in episode 3... it was because we got Sean.”

Jimmy says he cried while writing Broken, with tales from the breadline and from his own religious upbringing.

The start of the series left us wanting to see more – and Sean says it gets even better.

“When I read episode six I was just knocked out by it,” he says. “I thought how the hell has Jimmy managed to do this?

"He’s a terrific writer who’s not afraid of portraying the truth and life as we see it today.”

Jimmy McGovern, Sean Bean and Anna Friel discuss new made in Liverpool drama Broken

Quote
Jimmy McGovern has compared his new six-part drama about a Catholic priest in a Northern town to the classic Christmas film It’s A Wonderful Life.

Broken, which stars Sean Bean, Anna Friel and Adrian Dunbar and was filmed in and around Liverpool, begins on BBC1 at 9pm on Tuesday May 23.

It focuses on the maverick Father Michael Kerrigan (Bean) – a man who must be confidant, counsellor and confessor to a community struggling to reconcile its beliefs with the realities of daily life in modern Britain.

Jimmy says: “If you want a film to which we owe a debt of gratitude, it would be It’s a Wonderful Life, where James Stewart is suicidal and thinks his life had been a disaster. But his guardian angel shows him what life would have been without him and demonstrates that his life has not been a failure; it’s been a success. So it has the same themes as It’s A Wonderful Life, except it’s longer and a bit darker at times!”

Sean Bean describes his character as “very well-meaning, and he’s also someone who is carrying a lot of sadness, grief and guilt – and very horrific memories of the past.”
“When Jimmy’s scripts for the series started arriving I was just flabbergasted by them, because he had really thrown his heart and soul into it...His writing is very brave, with lots of twists and turns. When I read episode six I was just knocked out by it. I thought, how the hell has he managed to do this? Because I was wondering how it would end.”

Anna Friel teases SHOCKING twist for Christina Fitzsimmons in new BBC drama Broken
Quote
Reveal on tonight’s episode of The One Show, Friel revealed that her character would know-how the twist, but had to keep tight-lipped on exact plot details.

The first occurrence of Broken is due to air on May 23, with the actress believing it will prompt viewers to “look at our polity”.

Presenter Matt Baker revealed: “I’ve seen it this afternoon, and to be proper with you, that’s kind of how you feel,” prompting her to ask: “Are you broken?”

Co-host Alex Jones summed: “It’s quite a lot to take in,” before showing a clip from the first instalment.

Friel said: “Jimmy McGovern is the writer and one of my favourites and we worked together at intervals before doing a show called The Street. It’s a state of the nation stage play.
The 40-year-old actress reckoned: “Yeah. We can’t talk about the twist that happens that’s moderately shocking.

“But the central character is the wonderful Sean Bean who plays a evangelist, and he tries to inspire and give hope to people and hopefully religion facilitates in some way. He’s more like everybody’s best friend.”
