Episode 6   Today 21:00 BBC One

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08xjkws

Series 1 - Episode 6

Quote
Poor Father Michael is starting to live up to the title of Jimmy McGovern’s passion play of a drama. He’s cracking up under the weight of all we’ve watched him go through – and who can blame him?

There was the police shooting of Vernon; Roz’s suicide and its aftermath; the little local difficulty over Christina (Anna Friel) not reporting her mum’s death so she could claim her pension – which, looking back, now seems a fairly minor blip on his parish radar.

For the final chapter in Fr Michael’s story, McGovern is on top form. Those who have stuck with the series – and it hasn’t been easy – are rewarded with one of our best writers at his angriest and most moving.

As the inquest into Vernon’s death opens, McGovern shines a harsh light into the moral failings of his characters. And whether it’s the owner of a chain of bookies (Phil Davis makes a great cameo) or a venal copper, the script inhabits them and makes them feel awkwardly real. Still, for decent, kind Michael, it’s too much: he sighs, “I’m not a priest, I’m an impostor.”

Summary

Father Michael visits the Demichelis children who are struggling to cope, but his offer of help is initially rejected by Chloe, whose anger results in drastic action. To her surprise, she gains support from an unlikely quarter. The inquest into Vernon's death begins, with Father Michael, Helen, and the officers in question all summoned to give evidence. PC Andrew Powell has to make a tough call - support his colleagues or tell the truth? And will being under oath lead Father Michael to confess to more than he has before? Drama, starring Sean Bean. Last in the series.

Broken
9pm, BBC1

Themes of guilt, redemption and ethical responsibility dominate as ever with Jimmy McGovern in the last of this series, starring Sean Bean. Despite a tendency for all characters to speak in “McGovernese”, this is nonetheless an immensely satisfying conclusion. Tonight, Chloe takes drastic action against the betting shop, Michael delivers an excoriating sermon on their influence, and the inquest into Vernon’s death begins.

Broken

BBC One, 9.00pm

Sean Bean has radiated tortured masculinity throughout Jimmy McGovern’s emotionally tangled drama centred on Catholic cleric Father Michael Kerrigan. Never more so than in tonight’s powerful conclusion as the inquest into Vernon’s death gets under way.

Broken season 2: Will Sean Bean return? Writer drops HUGE hint
Quote
BROKEN has captured the hearts of the nation over the past five weeks with its compelling storytelling and tonight, the BBC drama will come to a close.
The six-part series, which stars Sean Bean as Father Michael Kerrigan, has explored poverty, corruption and suicide over the course of the show.

The last instalment will test the Northern priest once more as the stories viewers have followed are tied up.

But will the finale be the last time the Game of Thrones actor dons his vestments and holds mass?

It certainly looks that way according to the series’ writer Jimmy McGovern, who hinted Sean will “move on” when the show concludes.

When asked if there was the potential for a second season, he told press including Express.co.uk: “Not so much with Sean because I think he wants to move on.

“Quite rightly, he will be thinking what more can I do with that character. When you see what we put him through, you will understand that there’s not so much.”

While he may lose his leading man, the Liverpudlian writer is still keen to see the drama return to television screens.

“I am hoping the BBC will allow me to do another one,” Jimmy commented. “It’s not that priest and it’s not that parish but it’s Broken 2… Who knows, we’ll see.”

Viewers blown away by BBC's “rare masterpiece” Broken – but will there be a series two?

Star Sean Bean and writer Jimmy McGovern together created a "breathtaking" BBC1 drama, but the series' future is far from guaranteed
Quote
Viewers celebrated the series finale of BBC1 drama Broken on Tuesday night, with many calling for awards for leading actors Sean Bean and Phil Davis.

The show, which follows a troubled Catholic priest (Sean Bean) in a poverty-stricken community in the northwest of England, has been praised for displaying both the good and the bad elements of religion, and ultimately providing a rare positive take on how the Catholic church can support its parishioners.

The finale featured a redemption of sorts for the priest, who had been considering hanging up his cassock.

On the one hand, I'd love to see more of Fr Michael, but on the other the drama was so perfect and so complete that I don't see how it could be continued at the same level. Since there was a resolution of Fr Michael's inner turmoil, the same tension won't be there. McGovern and Sean and everybody really pulled out all the stops on this; I think I'm happy to be grateful for the gift.

But if this doesn't win every BAFTA going, then BAFTAs are meaningless. Not sure which actress should win though. Anna Friel seems to have been the star attraction and she was very good, but I was far more intrigued with Paula Malcolmsen as Roz, and then Muna Otaru was just immense.

Was Sean nominated for a BAFTA for Accused? Even if I wasn't biased I'd still say he should win one for Broken. I'm trying to think who he may be up against. Line Of Duty was extremely popular this year so maybe he might be up against his co-star Adrian Dunbar.
As for the female leads, I was more emotionally involved in Rozs and Helens storylines so it would be great to see them nominated too.

He was nominated but lost out to Ben Whishaw in The Hollow Crown.

He won a Royal Television Society Award and an International Emmy Award for Accused.

Pietŕ. Yes. This was genius drama on so many levels. There has been nothing like it in years.

And the thing that has amazed me is that secularists and non-catholics seem to have been equally moved as Catholics or lapsed Catholics. It is humanity, beyond religion or politics.

Liverpool TV production firm behind Broken to meet with BBC about second series
Quote
The television production company behind the acclaimed BBC drama Broken is hoping to screen a second series.

Liverpool based LA Productions’ founder Colin McKeown has told the ECHO he has already lined up a meeting with the BBC next month to discuss a follow-up.

The film and TV maker said: “We are talking about it. God willing, it will happen.”

Mr McKeown said each episode of the six part series, which was aired at 9pm on Tuesdays, attracted about 5m viewers once catch-up TV and other recording methods are taken into account.

He added: “It’s a solid number. It won its slot.

“I have a meeting with the BBC in August. We’re definitely up for it.”

Mr McKeown also said he was staggered by the positive response the programme received on social media.

He said: “What’s wowed all of us is the unprecedented positivity of the feedback. We have been scratching our heads about that. You do your best to tell a story you want to tell.”

Referring to recent terror attacks, he said: “What’s been happening in Manchester, London and right across the world means there are people exposed to things they can’t come to terms with and they look for comfort.

“Maybe it was the gathering together of common cause and community spirit and the real value of having a common ground and people to share things with.

“We could never have predicted this response in a month of Sundays.”

Written by Liverpool’s Jimmy McGovern, Broken told the story of a how a Roman Catholic priest, Father Michael Kerrigan, played by Sean Bean, has to counsel and assist parishioners through a wide variety of challenges including mental health problems, gambling addictions, suicide, unlawful killing by the police, money worries, homophobia and much else besides.

Set in a generic, deprived, northern town, much of the series was filmed in Liverpool.

He said he would hope Sean Bean would return in the role.

Exclusive: Sean Bean reveals the one doubt he had about BBC One's Broken – and what changed his mind

Quote
BBC One's gripping drama Broken had millions hooked, but the series' lead star Sean Bean has admitted he had one reservation about his character.

Bean discusses signing up to play Father Michael in two behind-the-scenes snippets taken from the Broken DVD set – exclusive to Digital Spy.

"I went to see Sean in the process of getting him on board," explains writer Jimmy McGovern. "At first, he was worried that the character was passive.

"I said, "It's not passivity. To hear a confession is not passive – you take the concern of the penitent. They go out lighter; you go out heavier."

"I love Jimmy's work," Bean enthuses. "A couple of years ago, he and I met up, and he gave me an idea of what he wanted from this character. That immediately got me hooked.

"What he was proposing was radical and courageous storytelling."

In Broken, Bean plays Father Michael Kerrigan, a Catholic priest presiding over an urban parish in northern England.

With a chequered past and a complicated relationship with his own family, Michael is determined to help his parishioners through their troubles. But despite his best efforts, Father Michael can't always fix what's broken.

"Father Michael is always dealing with someone else's problems," Bean explains. "In a lot of films, I'm always causing the problems and getting killed. This is the other way round. It's not disappointing – it's quite refreshing!"

Broken is available now on BBC DVD.
