Sean Bean and ‘24’ Showrunner Join Second Season of ‘Medici’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Quote
Sean Bean will appear in the second season of epic Italy-set period drama “Medici: Masters of Florence.” U.S. showrunner Jon Cassar of “24: Legacy” and “24: Live Another Day” has also come on board the new season.

Cassar will direct and produce four of the eight episodes of the new “Medici,” whose first season starred Dustin Hoffman and was a runaway hit for RAI 1 in Italy, notably with younger viewers. Frank Spotnitz returns and will executive produce the series.

Bean will play poker-faced scheming aristocrat Jacopo Pazzi in the new run, which will likely be called “Medici: Lorenzo the Magnificent.” As with Season 1, it will be co-produced between Italy’s Lux Vide and public broadcaster RAI.

Lux Vide, which was a co-producer on the BBC’s “War and Peace,” is one of a handful of Italy-based producers coming to international attention with big English-language productions. The second season of “Medici” has a €24 million ($27 million) budget, placing it firmly in the ranks of high-end TV drama.

The show is set in 15th-century Florence and follows the Medici banking dynasty. In the first season, Hoffman played the family patriarch and Richard Madden his son Cosimo. The new series is set 20 years later, with the producers currently in talks with Madden to have him appear in flashback sequences.

Netherlands-based cable and telecoms group Altice is moving into streaming and original programming, and its Altice Studio is also a co-production partner on “Medici.” Altice’s SFR Play streaming service will carry the show in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Switzerland.

Netflix has rights to the new season of “Medici” in the U.S., U.K., Canada, India, and Taiwan, where it will be billed as a “Netflix Original.” Telefonica has bought it for its Movistar Plus pay service in Spain.

Shooting starts in August across locations in Italy, and will wrap by year’s end for a 2018 launch on RAI and the other platforms. Wild Bunch handled sales of the first season as it moved into TV distribution; buyers included Hulu Japan, Sky Deutschland, and Fox Latin America. The distributor for Season 2 has not been confirmed.

Lux Vide, based in Rome, is now looking to attract British and American partners as it continues to work up a slate of projects for the global market and to expand internationally. Upcoming series include “Devils,” a 10-part drama for Sky Italia set in the world of high finance during the global financial crisis.

“Now you have global television,” said Lux Vide chief Luca Bernabei. “You’re not competing just with people in Europe, you’re competing with the U.S. and the rest of the world, and the level of investment being made is completely different. You have to make shows that are bigger than before but there is still a need for producers who can develop scripts and new ideas for the market.”

With "The Oath" filming now, do you think this is still happening? Like did he officially sign on to this project too?

My goodness, his television presence is much more prominent than film these days. I kind of like this change.

Probably only Sean and his agent really know, but it is doable, I think. Medici is supposed to start filming in August and with a star with Sean's status, they will work around his schedule, I imagine.

I do, too. Good TV is better than most films these days. And Sean is quite a subtle actor so the longer the series the better so you see the character development. I hope you have seen "Broken."

I have yes! But only through crappy uploads. I hope it airs in North America. Broken was fantastic and I would love to see it in good quality. I had to order a region free dvd player and import The Frankenstein Chronicles as well, as A&E seems to not want to air it at all... It seems the shows he does that only air in the UK are so much better quality than that of his American shows (Legends, Missing). The Frankenstein Chronicles was fantastic too, worthy of many awards. Actually it was one of my favourite Sean Bean projects ever!

A huge congratulations is in order regarding Medici. We’re all very excited to see what happens next. Does the new series have a subtitle yet?

I believe “Medici: Lorenzo the Magnificent” will be our subtitle for this series. We’ve jumped ahead almost 50 years, so all of the characters from the first season are either dead – or if they’ve made it, they’re much older now. Lorenzo was really the Medici that everybody remembers. In Italy, that’s the hero. And there’s an amazing story with him and something called the “Pazzi Conspiracy” where they tried to murder him inside the church that his grandfather built! It was unbelievable. I mean you couldn’t write this stuff.

And we have Sean Bean on board, so we’re very excited about that. I worked a little bit with Sean on his show Legends. I re-shot some of the pilot for that, so I’ve a bit of a working relationship with him. He’s and unbelievable professional actor. I can’t wait to be working with him again.

MANTUA.  Mantova returns to be chosen as a set for prestigious international production: for two weeks, between 25 September and 7 October, there will be many scenes from the second season of the I Medici-Masters of Florence between the capital and Sabbioneta.

Filming of the Medici 2 , which will be filmed in English and then dubbed, will begin at the end of August in Rome.  You will then go to Mantua to move to Tuscany, Volterra, Pienza and Montepulciano.

A good part of the second season's series will be made in Volterra to continue in the Tuscan territory and for this reason the castings for the extras will take place on the 14th and 15th of September in the Etruscan city.

To participate in the castings you will have to show up on Thursday 14th September (women and children only) and Friday 15th September (men only) from 9am to 6pm with a break between 13am and 14pm. Women from 18 years of age to 73 and Italian non-EU citizens.  For people who are 74 years of age will need to bring a medical certificate attesting to good health.  All candidates must have photocopies of a valid identity card, tax code and Iban.  For non-EU citizens you will also need to bring a photocopy of the passport and the valid residence permit.  Those who are unauthorized to such documents may risk not being admitted.  Being a vintage film, you will not be able to participate in casting even men and women with hair with visible, visible meches, piercings and tattoos.  However, participation in calves is allowed.

Daniel Sharman and Bradley James Join Netflix’s ‘Medici’ (EXCLUSIVE)
Quote
The producers of Netflix’s “Medici: Masters of Florence” have completed casting for season two, with Daniel Sharman and Bradley James among the new names on the Frank Spotnitz and Nicholas Meyer-created Italian period drama.

An international cast is headed by Sharman (“Fear the Walking Dead”), who will take the lead role, playing a young Lorenzo the Magnificent in 15th century Florence. James (“Damien”) will star as his brother Giuliano.

Shooting on the €24 million ($28 million), eight-episode, series gets underway in Rome on August 24. Other key cast members for season two include Julian Sands (“Gotham”) as Lorenzo and Giuliano’s father, Piero, and Sebastian De Souza (“Crossing Lines”) as their friend, Sandro Botticelli.

The sophomore season of “Medici” is set 20 years after the events of the first. A young Lorenzo, the nephew of Richard Madden’s character Cosimo from the first series, is forced to take over the family bank, which has been mismanaged by his father.

As Lorenzo, his brother, and Botticelli set about trying to make Florence a great financial and cultural center, they face off against the Pazzi family, and Pope Sixtus IV, played by Raul Bova (“Alien vs. Predator”).

Sean Bean had already been announced as the Medici family’s nemesis Jacopo Pazzi. Lorenzo’s mother is played by Sarah Parish “Hatfields & McCoys”) and his mistress by Alessandra Mastronardi (“Master of None”).

The series is produced by Italy’s Lux Vide, public broadcaster Rai’s drama unit, and Frank Spotnitz’s company Big Light. “The X Files” writer Frank Spotnitz created the series with “Star Trek’s” Nicholas Meyer. U.S. showrunner Jon Cassar of “24: Legacy” and “24: Live Another Day” will direct.

“Medici: Masters of Florence” will be a Netflix Original in the U.S., U.K., Canada, India, and Taiwan and Rai is the broadcaster in Italy. Altice Studio is a co-production partner and has it for its SFR Play streaming service in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Switzerland. In Spain, it is with Telefonica’s Movistar Plus.

Why "no reason"? The series is not bad.
