In conjunction with the ‘Beyond Caravaggio’ exhibition running from June 17th — September 2017, Prof. Brian Hoyle (Senior Lecturer in Film Studies, University of Dundee) will present a Lecture on Derek Jarman’s brilliant film Caravaggio (1986). Introduction to Caravaggio’s Art with Gallery 23 Director, Dr. Julie Hansen

Caravaggio is a 1986 British drama film directed by Derek Jarman (1942 –1994). The film is a fictionalised re-telling of the life of Baroque painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. One of Jarman’s most beautiful and accessible films, his imaginative biopic of the Italian Baroque painter was the first of his many feature collaborations with Tilda Swinton. She plays the female participant in a love triangle involving the artist (Nigel Terry) and a street fighter (Sean Bean). Jarman’s painterly background shines through, with many of the elegantly staged scenes evoking the most dramatic compositions of the Italian artist.

While not as politically or as sexually confrontational as some of his other works, Caravaggio emphasises the conflict between the artistic and sexual freedom desired by the artist, and the stringent demands of society – a tension Jarman himself encountered throughout his life.
