CIVILIZATION VI
« on: August 03, 2016, 01:32:13 PM »
Sean Bean will be the voice of Civ 6's tech tree quotes

Quote
After he voiced Civilization 6's E3 trailer, there was a lot of speculation about whether actor Sean Bean would be lending his voice to more of the game. And after playing Civilization 6 hands-on, we can confirm that Bean will be the voice of the historical quotations that appear after you complete a new technology, and now also for the new civics. You can watch the video above starting at 5:30 to hear how he sounds.

Bean has big shoes to fill. Actor Leonard Nimoy, who passed away in February of 2015, provided his thoughtful intonations in Civilizations 4 and 5. Bean has done some game voice acting before, most recently as the narrator in survival horror game Kholat. He was also the voice of Emperor Martin Septim in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and this is definitely his largest video game role since then. Serving as an omniscient, unseen narrator that transcends time itself will presumably make it difficult for Bean to be killed, but we wouldn't rule anything out.

Civ 6 has introduced a civics tree fueled by culture generation, alongside the regular science-based technology tree. A quote is read both when a civic or a tech is completed, which means Civ 6 will feature a lot more quotes to be read than its predecessors. You can hear about all the differences between Civ 5 and Civ 6 by watching the full video above.

By the way, THAT'S IT--- all you can hear of Sean in that video is 3 seconds right there, not even a complete sentence.
It's so annoying that this reviewer exploited Sean's name in the headline of his 16-minute-long review and then there was one sentence about him, and you hear half a sentence spoken by him. ggrrrr.

Sean Bean's dulcet tones are going to be the perfect guide for Civilization VI

Quote
One of the most reassuring aspects of Civilization IV and V was Leonard Nimoy. Every time you discovered a new technology, Nimoy would be there for you: delivering in grave and stately tones a relevant quotation from a scientist, philosopher, or politician. You felt better for it. Wiser. A little less nervous about Gandhi's nuclear program. But with Nimoy's passing last February, Civilization has had to turn to a new narrator for humanity's progress. And they've chosen — rather brilliantly — Sean Bean.

Bean has already appeared as the narrator for game's trailer, but PC Gamer has confirmed he's also in charge of the tech tree quotations, with the publication collating some of his quotations below:

You can't replace Nimoy, of course, but Bean brings a whole new type of Northern English charm to the role. While Nimoy's delivery was like a wise old immortal's, generously opening up cosmic wonders for the player, Bean's seems less ... awed. He's a Sheffield lad, and there's a good-natured surliness to the way he turns his vowels — just think about Bean as Ned Stark in Game of Thrones, gently mocking Mark Addy's Robert Baratheon. (Also a Yorkshireman; I'd forgotten how good the accents of GoT were.) It's exactly the sort of guidance you want as you try to take over the world: grounded and sane, but without being humorless.

Watch (a very much alive) Sean Bean's soothing voicework for Civilization V

Quote
I'm glad he's not dead
As if Sean Bean doesn't already joke about dying in nearly every one of his films, he makes a crack about being "replaced" in the next Civilization, creating a canon death for his character, the narrator. It's heartbreaking!

More triumphantly, you can get a little behind the scenes look at this process, in which he low key says it's easier than making films because you have the lines in front of you. Oh, and the brief footage of the chorus that performs live music? Wonderful.

I wish there was hours of footage of Sean Bean smiling in a sound booth.

Our 2016 award for Best Strategy & Simulation goes to:

I’d longed to see a sequel for this venerated series that understood how to rejuvenate the franchise with minor tweaks to seemingly insignificant features, weaving them into something brand new. With Civic Cards, the usually slightly complex politics is streamlined into something easy to grasp, while Districts added that much-needed strategy. Aside from that, it’s the Civilization that we all know and love.

Accompanying all of this is an art style that I personally adored, right down to the unrevealed maps having very ye olde art of monsters. It also had excellent narration from Sean Bean, who sadly doesn’t make it past the launch trailer, and a musical score that evolves into even more beautiful renditions of earlier tunes as your game goes on.
