Curfew Sky One, 9.00pm
Sky One’s new British drama is set in an authoritarian state, where a zombie-style virus has led to nightly lockdowns and terrified citizens risk everything to race for a new life on a private island owned by a mysterious billionaire. It plays out like a cross between The Fast and The Furious and Wacky Races with a dash of 28 Days Later and a hint of Fantasy Island. And if all of that sounds completely insane, that’s because it largely is: it’s a high-octane fever dream that, when it works at least, delivers a welcome jolt of adrenaline.

As this might suggest, there’s a lot going on here and, unsurprisingly, not everything quite comes off. Part of the issue is budgetary – the much-vaunted car scenes can’t compete with those big-screen classics – but the dialogue errs on the heavy-handed and tonally it’s all over the place. That said, Phoebe Fox brings heart as conflicted paramedic Kay, there’s a nice subplot involving an ordinary family who join the race, and there’s the promise of seeing plenty more from Billy Zane and Miranda Richardson.

Best of all, however, is Sean Bean as a grizzled mechanic. When he’s on screen, the show crackles and becomes a drama worthy of sacrificing your Friday night to watch.

'It's must-watch telly': What Curfew's star-studded cast say - from Sean Bean to Adrian Lester

Quote
HOW FAR WOULD you go to be free?

Welcome to the near future. By night, the lights go out and the doors are locked, keeping the streets clear to prevent the spread of a killer virus. Break curfew, and you might not make it out alive.

There is one way to escape the curfew for good: by winning the world’s deadliest car race. Charting a thrilling route through South London to the Scottish Highlands, 25 teams must go head-to-head in a life or death challenge.

Curfew is a blast of drama and diesel, a Sky Original production with a stellar cast including Sean Bean, Adrian Lester, Billy Zane, Adam Brody, Rose Williams and Miranda Richardson.

The show’s first episode airs this Friday at 9pm on Sky One – and it’s set to be the most exhilarating new show of the season.

Don’t believe us? Here’s what the cast are saying…

Sean Bean plays The General, an unpredictable criminal who never forgets those who cross him. Curfew offered Bean the chance to play a role that matched up with the kinds of plots he’s always been most drawn in by:

I’m just fascinated by that darkness. I always find these dystopian tales and images quite fascinating – the comparisons to 1984 and stuff like that.

Each team is fighting to escape the terror of the world they’re living in, but escaping means risking their lives. The show balances two warring desires: the desire to be free and the desire to be safe. The result, as Bean’s co-star Adrian Lester says, is a thrilling ride:

There are some big surprises. Some characters just disappear and some die during the race, which also strengthens the horror and drama and the stakes that the characters find themselves under.

“I thought it [the show] is quite relevant to what’s happening today,” says Bean.

Things are getting quite militarised in America and you wouldn’t like to think that will happen here, but that’s what’s happening in our story… it seems to be a very subterranean society that people are living in.

While the idea of an enforced curfew is – hopefully – one that’s reserved for our TV screens, Malachi Kirby (who plays McLaren driver Michael) says those who know London well will find lots of familiar sights.

“The world of Curfew that we’re creating is pretty much present day,” he notes. “It may seem like the future, but it’s not – hopefully! It pretty much looks how we know London to look.”

Recalling the moment he first read the script, Kirby says, “I remember thinking, this is ambitious.” Since then, he’s come around:

It’s a mash-up of genres and a mash-up of different things we’ve seen, but never all together at the same time. I think it’s going to be one of the most exciting things on TV.

Rose Williams, who plays The General’s pregnant girlfriend, Faith, agrees. “It’s original, daring adrenaline… a sensory overload,” she says.

For Lester, it’s the stellar cast and the compelling plot he reckons will hook viewers from episode one:

A major thing that made me join the cast was the other amazing actors and the fantastic story,” he says. “It’s got all the elements for some must-watch telly, because it is a mad, crazy and dangerous series.

Ready to compete in the world’s deadliest and most exhilarating street race?

CRITICS’ CHOICE
Race war
Curfew (Sky 1, 9pm)
As devotees of Stan Lee’s Lucky Man will testify, Sky has a penchant for dramas that could be comic-book stories. In Curfew, this cartoony feel is oddly combined with a cast stuffed with people who can really act, even though their limited parts don’t require it. Set in a totalitarian Britain, it opens with a prologue episode tracing the run-up to a curfew-breaking street race with escape to “the island” as prize. The General (Sean Bean) sells cars as well as takes part. Paramedic Kaye (Phoebe Fox) forms a team with Michael (Malachi Kirby) and Ruby (Aimee-Ffion Edwards). Simon (Adrian Lester) is desperate to get his family out of London.

Few clues are vouchsafed about the regime they all live…

Billy Zane and Sean Bean lead an ensemble cast in Curfew, which follows the story of ordinary people and extraordinary characters competing in the world’s fastest, most furious illegal nighttime street race.

In this DQTV interview, the stars introduce the series, which is described as a mix of Death Race, 28 Days Later and Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, with some added Wacky Races and a hint of The Fast & The Furious.

Bean talks about how Curfew combines the danger and excitement of the race with the stories of the very ordinary people taking part, and introduces his “charming, dangerous” character.

Zane describes how his character provides some comic relief to proceedings, with stunts and antics designed to build his social media following.

Executive producers Will Gould and Frith Tiplady also discuss how action feature films from the 1980s inspired the series, which Tiplady says is “unashamedly fun.” In addition, they detail the challenges of producing Curfew, including near-constant night shoots, maintaining dozens of vehicles, and numerous stunts.

Curfew 1×01 preview
Quote
New street race drama Curfew starts this Friday (February 22nd) on Sky One in the UK and it’s looking like one to watch. It stars an ensemble cast including Sean Bean, Adrian Lester, Phoebe Fox and Malachi Kirby competing for freedom in the world’s deadliest illegal night-time street race.

Desperate for their own reasons, the challengers risk everything as they race through the night from London to northernmost Scotland in their pimped-out, weaponised vehicles to win the ultimate prize — freedom from the totalitarian government curfew that controls their lives.

The cast of Curfew also includes Adam Brody, Andi Osho, Miranda Richardson, Rose Williams and Billy Zane.

Curfew is an 8-part Sky Original Production, from Tiger Aspect Productions in association with Moonage Pictures, will be available exclusively on Sky One and TV streaming service NOW TV.

Tune in to Sky One at 2am or 9pm on Friday 22nd February to see the first episode. Preview it with our gallery below:

Curfew begins this Friday on Sky One at 9pm, NOW TV and on demand, with new episodes every Friday. The series is available to pre-order on DVD, ahead of its release on May 13th.

Actually, in a more accurate way, the first episode premieres at 2am on that day. Sally4Ever also did this. I guess it’s so they can have the series on demand to watch during the first day, rather than having to wait until evening.

There’s so much going on and so many influences on show, it’s hard to know where to start with Curfew. In an only-slightly-future London, the country is under a strict curfew, at first unexplained. The big excitement is an approaching illegal street race. Gunning to go all Fast & Furious on the streets are a mixed bag of characters with an equally mixed bag of motivations: ambulance-driver and former medical researcher Phoebe Fox; mild-mannered family man Adrian Lester; dodgy mechanic/fixer Sean Bean; a briefly glanced Billy Zane and Miranda Richardson; and many more.

There’s horror and black humour in the mix, too, along with flashbacks to a pre-curfew past. And snazzy opening credits. Buckle up…

Summary

Drama about a group of amateur drivers from all over the world competing in an illegal night-time street race as they flee the totalitarian government curfew that is controlling their lives. Starring Sean Bean, Billy Zane and Adrian Lester.

Curfew on Sky One: Faith and the General’s ‘dark past’ exposed in unexpected twist
CURFEW season one is airing on Sky One this evening, and Rose Williams who plays Faith in the show opened up on her character and Sean Bean’s The General’s dark past.
Quote
One of the individuals who decides to participate in this race which promises a way out is Faith (played by Rose Williams), and she shares a lot of scenes with Sean Bean who plays a character called The General.

Faith is very pregnant in the show, and the two of them decide to make a break for it so that their unborn child can have a shot at living a more normal, stress-free life.

However, these two characters clearly have dark pasts full of secrets they’d rather remain hidden.

“Faith and the general they both have dark pasts, and you find that out a little later on, and they're brought together by events through their environment due to the virus outbreak,” Rose told press, including Express.co.uk.

She added: “And they're both been through a lot and they're both connected, and they're both tough, and they're both very motivated to keep this baby alive.

“So they're the tough guys, very very wanting to win,” she finished.

However, he co-star, Billy Zane, who plays Joker Jones, felt that Rose was underselling herself.

The actor then explained how Faith is the most impressive character in the show.

“She's being very diplomatic,” Billy began, before adding: “Faith is the hardest character in his show and happens to be nine months pregnant, it's just feminism 6.0.”

It remains to be seen what secrets lie in those “dark pasts” which Rose was talking about.

It’s Wacky Races meets The Fast And The Furious meets 28 Days Later – and it’s exactly as bonkers as that sounds
Quote

Curfew, Friday 22 February 9pm, Sky One/HD (CH 110/109). Also available for 30 days in Catch Up > Channels > Sky One

In a world overrun by nocturnal man-eating monsters, in an England ruled by a brutal totalitarian government, no one is allowed outside after dark. But there is hope – a way to escape to a utopian island. All you have to do is win a huge, anything-goes drag race across Britain, which takes place over a single night, in the infested dark.

Welcome to Curfew. Created by the producers of Peaky Blinders and Ripper Street, and starring big names such as Sean Bean, Billy Zane and Phoebe Fox, it’s shaping up to be one wild ride.

Think you can handle it? We visited the set of Curfew and spoke to producer Simon Maloney, along with stars Billy Zane and Phoebe Fox, to find out everything you need to know to be in with a chance of reaching the finish line.

Each car is a character

Forget Sean Bean, forget Billy Zane – according to Maloney, “the cars are the stars”. With each vehicle having been cobbled together in the worst of circumstances, the starting line features such entries as a London ambulance (fortified with spikes), an old Volvo 240 family car (picnic included), and a big yellow camper van (fitted with a cocktail bar, party lights and loudspeakers).

But there are human characters too

There are 25 contenders in the race and Curfew explores the backstories of a select few. Zane plays Joker Jones, an ex-psychiatrist turned cowboy anarchist, who competes in a party bus, while Bean’s The General drives a souped-up Jaguar XJS alongside his pregnant partner Faith (Rose Williams). And the ambulance? That belongs to Fox’s character Kaye, who she describes as “the dramatic anchor of the show. It’s not just about winning the race for her. It’s about freeing herself from the shackles of her life.”

It’s every team for themselves

Thanks to a special black box, the competitors can communicate with each other during the race. “If there’s a common problem to solve then the racers might team up for an episode,” said Maloney. “But as they get further down the race that willingness to help begins to disappear. Whether they decide to keep their allegiances or throw them aside is half the fun of the show.”

The creators recruited Billy Zane through flattery

Show creators Matthew Read and Will Gould wrote a letter to Billy Zane in a bid to convince him to join the show. “They identified some things that I hoped had resonated through my work and fashioned Joker Jones out of bits of my career; a little bit of Dead Calm, a little bit of Zoolander. It’s a dream role.”

The Stig is behind the wheel

To get the actors race ready, and to ensure the stunts were out of this world (but also safe), the producers tapped into the talents of Top Gear’s Stig – real name Ben Collins. “Driving the ambulance was absolutely terrifying,” said Fox. “I only learned to drive last year. But after getting in the ambulance with the Stig, I learned a lot about myself as a driver.”

The stunts are huge!

Cars crash, cars explode. The race is chaos. Fittingly, the producers had sourced, purchased and subsequently wrote off around 100 vehicles over the course of filming. One sequence that involves all 25 teams taking off from a demolition derby-style bullring proved so logistically complicated to plan out that the team used hot wheels toys to draft out their idea!

It’s not pretentious in the slightest

Dark and gritty drama this ain’t. Curfew’s goal is to entertain. “There are certainly elements of scares in the show as there are in any kind of B-movie genre,” said Maloney. “But tonally, it’s not a dark show. It’s a high-octane roller coaster ride!”

Curfew: Join the race
Quote
Using immersive technology, Endemol Shine and Sky VR wanted to create an experience that would take people into the heart of new street race drama, Curfew

Curfew: Join The Race is an immersive, interactive VR experience for Oculus Rift, inspired by the exhilarating new drama Curfew, produced by Tiger Aspect (part of Endemol Shine Group) and Moonage Pictures. Curfew: Join The Race launched on 22nd February, in conjunction with the TV series.

Curfew is a street race drama starring Sean Bean, Billy Zane, and Adrian Lester. By day the world seems very much like the world we know – but at night the shutters come down, the streets are cleared and a curfew is enforced to protect the population from an infectious virus that has decimated the country. Ordinary people are given the opportunity to race their way free and escape the world of the curfew.

REWIND partnered with the Endemol Shine UK Multiplatform team to produce Curfew: Join The Race. The ambition was to create a narrative experience which meshes deeply with the timeline and themes of the show itself, providing an immersive alternative angle on the action. The experience allows fans to step inside the world they see on screen and get closer to the race.

This interactive scripted adventure lands you on the starting grid of an illegal street race inspired by the Curfew universe. You meet your driver, ‘Eduardo’ and the mysterious ‘Helena’ who communicates to you from her hideout over CB radio. As co-pilot, you must make decisions in the hope of evading the police, other racers and surviving the night.

The experience was created using REWIND’s in-house version of Unreal engine along with a set of narrative and interactive tools, purpose-built for making immersive VR experiences. The process involved extensive reference photography, motion capture, immersive sound design, and a notable cast of actors and talent.

Curfew: Join The Race is available to download for free on Oculus Rift

Curfew 1×02 preview

Quote
On the first episode of Curfew, the various teams made their way to the starting location.

If you’re not up to date with Curfew and like to avoid spoilers we suggest you don’t read any further.

The episode ended with the entrants sat with their cars in a circle as the race was about to get underway. Who will win? Will Sean Bean die? Guess we’ll have to keep watching.

On the second episode of Curfew. The race is on and the road ahead is packed with dangers. The Donahues face up to a huge setback. Then, things go wrong on the Thames.

Curfew continues Sky One at 9pm Friday on Sky One. Preview it with our gallery below:

Meet the racers of Curfew
Quote
Contains mild spoilers for Curfew episode one.

Sky’s latest event TV show Curfew landed on Sky One on Friday – it’s set in a near future where citizens have to observe a government enforced law to stay in doors after dark for their own protection to avoid attacks from infected creatures.

But mysterious billionaire Max Larssen (Adam Brody) has created a deadly street race that takes place over one night. Teams of racers compete to win the ultimate prize: a place on an island in the South Pacific free from the virus and a real chance of freedom.

Episode one establishes the world, the characters and the back story, and kicks off the race – subsequent episodes will focus on specific teams as the race continues throughout the night.

Want to get up to speed? Here’s our handy guide to each of the teams we’re following – who they are, what they drive and what their motivations are.

Lucky 13
Curfew's dynamic duo, Lucky 13 is made up of Errol (Sean Bean), aka The General, and Faith (Medici's Rose Williams) – a couple who are in the race not only for their freedom, but for the freedom of their unborn child. The General is a career criminal who's infamous for pulling off high-stakes heists and, together with his much younger – and pregnant – girlfriend, has built a tidy business in black-market profiteering. But with the street race offering the winners a new life away from the totalitarian world of the curfew, these two are literally fighting for their child's future – potentially making them two of the contest's most dangerous competitors. They’re behind the wheel of a souped-up sports car, but will that horsepower be enough to power them to the finish line?

Curfew, a brand new Sky original production, Fridays at 9pm on Sky One or catch up now

Series 1 - Episode 2   Today 9pm - 10pm Sky One

Review
Cars always look good racing in urban landscapes on rain-slicked streets, but unless the lighting’s right it can all get a bit murky. Curfew just about gets away with it. This week, the illegal street race to escape London sets off. Rather like in The Hunger Games, there are immediate casualties, but the drama’s most valued players are soon zooming around trying to work out how to cross the Thames without being picked off by the police. Thankfully, one man had a plan… and now his son Roman (impressive youngster Ike Bennett) has to decipher it. There are zombies, bazookas, dangerous computer files, cheese and pickle sandwiches and Sean Bean as a man with a very short fuse. What’s not to like?

Summary
The Donahues have to come to terms with a major setback, and they need to reach out to Kaye, Michael and Ruby of the MED VAC 239 team for help in crossing the River Thames.

Odds are against Sean Bean making it to end of Curfew alive
Quote
A FEW years back I read an excellent article in a film magazine about Sean Bean.

In it, they addressed the fact he has been killed off an impossibly large number of times in film, and television, roles.

It stuck with me because the innovative approach was to actually get him to discuss each screen death, and how he felt about how had been, well, bumped off.

It was, even if in slightly bad taste, very funny and showed how Sean might have had a chaotic private life but he is still one of our most marketable stars.

If Sean’s in something, the chances are his character will die a terrible death at some point.

But there is also a fairly good chance it will be good.

So the arrival of Sky 1’s new drama Curfew, starring Sean, holds a fair amount of promise.

I particularly like it when he decides to, or is allowed the luxury of, using his native Sheffield accent as he is here.

In fact, he obviously savours this since here the accent is almost thick enough to cut with a knife.

He plays a slightly dodgy type involved in shady Wacky Races/Death Race style shenanigans in a dystopian non-descript city.

It could be anywhere but I assume since everyone appears to be British, it is meant to be these shores.

Wherever it is, marshall law is very much in force, innocent types are gunned down without a second thought whilst bad people are hunted, and something has gone so badly wrong, there is an overnight lockdown in order to keep people safe.

Hence the title of choice.

It is very Hollywood - with English accents.

Which almost doesn’t work but is worth sticking with - not least because they have flashbacks which help unfurl the back story to how everything went down the toilet.

I do like a flashback in a drama.

Along with Sean, there is quite a pedigree here from an acting point of view

Adrian Lester, from Hustle, turns up and comedian Andi Osho did a sterling turn in this first episode in a rare dramatic role.

Probably a plot spoiler, but Sean did make it to to the end of episode one in tact.

There is a bit of an undead theme going on here, potentially, alongside the revving of engines and slightly odd outfits, so he probably isn’t out of the woods yet.

If it sounds a tad silly, it probably is, not least because you can sort of accept fantastical plots in a drama when it is all played out with an American accent.

But you have to applaud them for going for an original idea and really putting everything they have into it.

I found myself actively disappointed I couldn’t download the next episode.

Series 1 - Episode 3    Today 9pm - 10pm Sky One
Quote

Review
by Gill Crawford

This updated take on Escape from New York is slowly finding its feet, but this episode dials back on the humour to focus on some genuine face-behind-the-cushion suspense. The vehicles trying to get out of London may have worked out how to cross the Thames, but now they’ve got to get through the vast wall that surrounds the city. This involves going into some very poorly lit spaces – and whatever’s hiding in them.

And we learn more about Faith (Rose Williams, one of several excellent young actors in this well-cast show), the heavily pregnant girlfriend of Sean Bean’s hair-trigger gangster character. Her back story involves a babysitting stint that goes horribly, horribly wrong – and some in-depth weapons training.

Summary
London's huge wall presents the racers with another massive obstacle, while the General and Faith hatch a sneaky plan and Jenny grows increasingly anxious.

Curfew
9pm, Sky One
Fast and injurious: Sky’s daft drama about a deadly street race in a totalitarian UK nominally takes place over one berserk night, which means lots of flashbacks to fill out the backstories of its sprawling cast. Tonight we learn how pregnant moll Faith (Rose Williams) fell in with Sean Bean’s amusingly short-fused heavy
