Perhaps he'll still appear in flashbacks? The guy who got killed off in episode 1 showed up in flashbacks during episode 2.

Sean Bean’s latest screen death: A breakdown of that Curfew scene
How does Bean bite it and more crucially why, in the latest episode of Sky drama Curfew

Quote
Sky’s new street race drama Curfew is well underway with the third episode now available to watch. The show is a massive genre mashup and now we’re a way in it feels like each ep has a slightly different genre makeup.

Ep three has a strong horror bent: it’s the first time we get a proper look at the mooks and much of the ep follows Kaye, Ruby and Michael who are driving the ambulance and what’s left of the Donahue family who find themselves in a dark underground passage and prime targets for attack. There’s also a backstory which could have come straight out of a horror movie - but more on that later.

Crucially though this is THE SEAN BEAN EPISODE.

Yep, the minute we discovered Bean was in the show we’ve been speculating in which ep he’d bite the bullet. Bean is a terrific actor but he is of course known for his spectacular and frequent demises. What would it be this time? Will he be ripped apart chained to two cars speeding in opposite directions? Will he be mauled to bits by marauding mooks? Will he be chased off a cliff by sheep? Anything was possible.

And the Curfew writers and filmmakers were obviously quite aware of that. So instead, the Sean Bean Episode teases multiple points where you think Bean’s going to buy it, but constantly pulls the rug out from under us.

Bean plays The General (we learn in ep 3 his name is really Errol Chambers - not very glam!) and he’s racing with his heavily pregnant girlfriend Faith (Rose Williams). Faith is due any day and the two are hoping to win a place on the island for the sake of their child-to-be. The trouble is Errol is a massive hot head. We’ve seen this in previous episodes - he flips out big time when Michael (Malachi Kirby) says ‘let the best man win’, drives recklessly and ends up crashing his car early on in the race. In fact at the start of ep 3 it looks like Faith may have lost the baby because of the accident (and this is the first point where you think The General himself might be dead).

The racers have to get past a massive wall surrounding London and different teams choose different means of doing this. For Faith and The General the plan is that a friend of The General’s will smuggle them through a black ops checkpoint with the car in the back of a lorry. Trouble is Errol can’t control his temper and flips out insisting he drive, though eventually agreeing that Faith should remain in the car inside the lorry even though there are crates containing mooks in there with her…

At the checkpoint he’s asked for ID - he manages to keep his cool. The marshall asks to see what’s in the back of the lorry and he opens it up to reveal the car (Faith is out of the vehicle and hiding). The marshall realises they’re racing when he sees the number on the car and Errol draws his gun. He’s definitely going to die now! (we think).

But he gets a last minute reprieve - the marshall recognises him. Seems like The General has a reputation as a bit of a legend, particularly in Cleethorpes (!). Looks like Faith and The General have dodged a bullet… But sadly the marshall hasn’t: an off-hand remark annoys The General who impulsively shoots and kills the marshall. Faith and The General then get in their armoured car and try to drive through the checkpoint but are shot at by the rest of the force manning the point.

Surely this is how Errol will make his exit?

In fact no. Faith, who has felt her baby kick and knows it’s alright, decides to take matters into her own hands. She gets weaponised and shoots up the rest of the black ops guys herself (go Faith!) leaving the pair free to carry on with the race.

Just when you think Bean will live to die another day, ep three does the old switcheroo. While The General attempts to apologise to Faith for being an enormous pain in the bum all episode, Faith tells her she’s finishing the race alone. Nope says Errol, I’ll hunt you down… So Faith shoots him in the head.

The General is no more. But then there's the backstory we mentioned earlier which also involves Bean. It's Faith’s and it's woven throughout the ep.

In it we see Faith as a well spoken young woman who’s babysitting for a family around the time the infection broke out. A series of murders are reported in the area where she and the kids are so she takes the children into the basement to hide. But one of the kids goes outside to find his dog and gets bitten.

Bringing him inside (and clearly not knowing the rules of zombie movies) she puts him in the basement with the other kids while she goes to call the police, and tells them to lock the door behind her. Pretty quickly the screaming starts… Worse still, when the kids’ heavily pregnant mother returns home, seeing her children dead she shoots herself in the head in front of Faith. Then her husband arrives to find his entire family (including unborn baby) all dead.

But when her husband looks up from cradling the dead body of his pregnant wife…. It’s SEAN BEAN!

The General might be out of the race, but there are things we need to know.

Why is he called The General and what’s his reputation based on?

How did he end up with the much much younger babysitter, who he may well hold responsible for the deaths of his entire family?

When and why did Faith go from clean cut school girl type to fully blinged-up firearm-wielding bad-ass?

We will have to wait for future episodes to find out!

Tatton Studios plays host to Curfew scenes
Quote
Tatton Studios has played host to its latest project after transforming a Cheshire farm into a zombie war scene as part of Sky's latest drama series Curfew.

Set to air on 22 March, Millington Hall Farm will be at the centre of the latest instalment as Billy Zane and Miranda Richardson's characters continue their quest for survival.

The series, which also stars Sean Bean, is set in the near future at a time when Earth is overwhelmed by a virus of unknown origin. A totalitarian government imposes a strict curfew in a bid to protect the population, with a handful of people finding themselves competing in a string of illegal street races across the country to win sanctuary.

Producers at Tiger Aspect selected the Tatton Estate for the project.

Charlie Greenstein, head of TV and film at Tatton Locations, said: "Curfew is a unique series and there's nothing else like it on television at the moment, so when the producers approached us, it was a no-brainer.

"Seeing the team transform a disused farmhouse and barn into the scene of a pretty gory attack was incredible and opened our eyes to just how versatile our locations can be, so we can't wait to watch the final edit."

Recent productions worked on by Tatton include Peaky Blinders, The Worst Witch, Bancroft, Coronation Street and Hollyoaks.

Greenstein added: "Our involvement in such iconic series and films is testament to the dedication and passion that our team have for their craft – we're committed to putting Cheshire on the map for film making and cementing our reputation as Manchester and Liverpool’s back lot."

Review

by Gill Crawford

I like Curfew’s changing tone. One minute it’s a shoot-’em-up with light banter, the next it’s squirming horror. Last week, for example, we learnt how Billy Zane’s Joker Jones went from sober psychiatrist to driver of the psychedelic Team Awesome bus; his attempt to analyse an increasingly frustrated Jenny Donahue (Andi Osho) was hilarious.

This week, things are back to edge-of-the seat scary: never has changing a lead in a car been more fraught, especially when there are cows – and zombies – loose on the rural roads of Warwickshire. And we meet another contestant in this death race: tow-truck driver Lou Collins (Miranda Richardson), who’s taking part for that most unlikely of reasons – love.

Summary

Lou and Hanmei crash into each other while vying for position on a country lane, forcing them to venture to a nearby farm to search for spare parts.

Where high-octane meets high-end: we interview Laura Smith about directing second unit on Curfew
Quote
As part of the programme, Laura was selected as a placement director on Sky One’s brand-new dystopian street racing series, Curfew — starring Sean Bean and Miranda Richardson. Working alongside director Colm McCarthy, Laura directed second unit and had access to all levels of production as part of the scheme.

We talked to Laura about capturing car-chases, depicting dystopia, and drowning a street in blood. Read our interview below.

Curfew has a great ensemble cast. What was it like seeing that come together?

Being placement director meant I was in some of the auditions, and also in the casting meetings where ideas were brainstormed and strategies discussed for bringing new audiences via casting and approaching high-profile cast. There were some great surprises — in one case several lower profile cast turned down a role which was then taken, at the last minute, by someone with a much higher profile.

I also loved watching the cast work on set: Billy Zane, Guz Khan and Jason Thorpe developing Team Awesome’s friendship through an improvised game of cricket whilst technical preparations went on around them; Andi Osho, Ike Bennett and Jessye Romeo discussing their wants and stakes in between takes;

Sean Bean hovering quietly behind a hedge before delivering an incredible reaction to a loved one’s death for his very first take, on his first day on set.

Review

by Gill Crawford

The number of intrepid travellers on the long, dark road race north is diminishing, but this week our plucky bunch must band together to rescue one of their own. They’re well out of London now, but they’ve got to detour round Manchester first (cue some helpful Joy Division and Happy Mondays on the soundtrack in case we weren’t sure, plus a bent copper who’s surely based on Paul Calf…).

I’m developing a very soft spot for this apocalyptic drama. It’s sometimes grim, but its humour is always cheering. Nerdy young Roman, cowering behind a trailer, explains the mechanics of a Mexican stand-off to his mother, as it happens. “Oh, shut up, Roman,” is her sensible response.

Summary

The ambulance, the hot hatch and the Volvo all chase an impenetrable Brookeheath prison truck containing some important cargo, heading towards the badlands of Manchester.

by Gill Crawford

We’ve got so involved with the stories of the ragged group of daredevils on their road race north to escape the monsters over the past few weeks that it’s easy to forget that the main story takes place during just one night. That’s where flashbacks come in, as we spend most of this episode finding out how the outbreak that led to a tenth of the world’s population being wiped out by bloodthirsty zombies began, some five years previously, at that scenic research institute run by Harriet Walter.

As the teams head into Scotland, are some people beginning to wobble about the purpose of their journey? It’s nicely tense as we count down to day zero of the outbreak.

Summary

The remaining racers near the finish line as they approach the Highlands, and Kaye reveals a secret she has been keeping for years when she makes a shocking confession to Michael.

With drama, humour and fast cars, eight-part Sky original production Curfew careers on to Sky One. Sean Bean, Billy Zane, Adrian Lester, Miranda Richardson and a stellar ensemble cast line up for a thrilling night-time street race as they try to flee the totalitarian government curfew that’s controlling their lives. The winner will be the first to reach the finish line by sunrise, and that’s the only rule. The fully integrated marketing campaign is currently visible through TV air time, targeted radio and via a bespoke IMAX wrap, which is an entertainment marketing first for Sky, yet the most progressive aspects of the media mix were executed through social and digital.

Curfew was launched as if it was a car brand and this included a gaming-themed car selector Instagram Story, which made users feel like they were flicking through the diverse range of drivers and vehicles. This tactic was designed to land the ensemble cast and unique cars outside of the boundaries of the show itself. Similarly, by exploiting the functionality of the MOBKOI ad platform, SCA allowed customers to choose their promo by selecting the actor they wanted to see in action the most.

The next phase of the campaign will see Sky release tailored, in-character talent content, captured for portrait social formats, which sees them explain why they are entering the race in the guise of a selfie video message to loved ones. This social content was written by SCA in partnership with the show writers and proved successful enough to be used on air.

Key to the eclectic range of media and content has been the willingness of lead talent to buy into the marketing campaign. The best example of this is a targeted radio campaign featuring Sean Bean, Adrian Lester, Billy Zane and Rose Williams talking to both commuting and daytime listeners with 9 bespoke creative executions.
