Sean Bean joins the stellar cast of new landmark World War II drama World on Fire
Quote
World On Fire is an adrenalized, emotionally gripping and resonant drama following the first year of World War II told through the intertwining fates of ordinary people drawn from Britain, Poland, France, Germany and the United States as they grapple with the effect of the war on their everyday lives.

Filming started in September in Prague and other filming locations include Manchester and Paris Peter Bowker says: “World On Fire tells the hidden human stories within the big historical events we think we know. From Harry, a young English translator in Warsaw caught up in negotiations with the Nazis and trying to smuggle his Polish lover Kasia out of the country, to Lois, the girl who is waiting for him at home, a young Mancunian factory worker who will come to take all the opportunities the War can offer to live a different kind of life. To Nancy, a female US war correspondent who can’t find peace unless her life is at risk, to the Rossler family in Berlin, worried for their soldier son and willing to do anything to protect their disabled daughter from the attentions of the ruling Nazi regime. These are the stories of the ordinary people who shaped our world. Stories of loyalty and brutality, courage and fear, hopes, stories of love and loss, hopes and dreams forged in extraordinary times."

Damien Timmer, Mammoth Screen Managing Director, says: “We’re thrilled by the talent and breadth of the incredible cast and production team that have come together to tell this extraordinary story. A drama that pieces together World War II with Pete’s characteristic irreverence and humanity, tracing the connections between allies and enemies, and the huge battles we thought we knew. From the siege of Warsaw, to Dunkirk, the fall of Paris and the battle of Britain, here is an epic story told on a human scale, with a truly international cast.”

Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, says: “Pete’s funny, humane and poignant writing gives us a perspective on those early days of the Second World War which we have never seen before. Spanning four nations, the canvas for the drama is vast, but the experience Pete gives us is boots on the ground granting us special insight into one of the most pivotal and seismic moments in Twentieth Century history. It is an honour to be working with Pete, director Adam Smith and producers Mammoth Screen as they bring this story to life”.

World On Fire is a 7x60’ series produced by Mammoth Screen for BBC One. It is written by Peter Bowker, developed by Mammoth’s Creative Director Rebecca Keane and executive produced by Peter Bowker, Damien Timmer and Helen Ziegler for Mammoth Screen and Lucy Richer for the BBC. The Series Producer is Chris Clough.

BBC war drama filmed in Wigan

Published: 12:30 Monday 10 December 2018

The glitz and glamour of prime-time TV production has descended on Wigan as the town was visited by crews shooting a new war drama.

Production teams behind epic BBC World War Two series World on Fire are training their lenses on the town with a number of local spots appearing in the filming schedule for the big-budget series.

Crews used The Old Courts in Wigan town centre to stand in for venues including Levenshulme Palais in Manchester and a decadent Parisian nightspot called Club Amour.

And the crews will close Kendal Street in Gidlow today to work on the eight-part series, which examines lives across the world during the turbulent first months of conflict and stars Academy Award-winning actor Helen Hunt at the top of a stellar cast.

The BBC confirmed some of the lead actors in the programme, which features the talents of Olivier Award winner Lesley Manville and rising British stars Jonah Hauer-King and Julia Brown, did visit Wigan but would not say which stars were in the borough for filming.

Residents who have stepped in as extras and the owners of film locations have also been sworn to secrecy on many of the details.

The Crawford Street culture hub will welcome crews again in the new year for more scenes based in the Palais.

And those working on the exciting drama have been keen to say how impressed they have been with the borough.

Andrew Bainbridge, location manager for World on Fire, said: “From the first time I visited Wigan, I knew that it would offer us some great locations for World on Fire and I wasn’t wrong.

“The town offers great streets and some very interesting spaces (not all of which we are using) but most of all the welcome from the residents, businesses and the council has been overwhelming.

“The town has a real can-do attitude and I will always consider filming in Wigan again.”

Written by Peter Bowker, who has worked on the likes of The A Word, Eric and Ernie and Blackpool, World on Fire features an international cast as it follows how war draws together the fates of ordinary people from Britain, Poland, France, Germany and the US.

As well as Wigan the cast are shooting in Manchester, London, Paris, Berlin and Prague.

Stories include a young English translator in Warsaw trying to smuggle his Polish girlfriend out of the country, a young factory worker taking the opportunities war brings for them and a German family trying to protect their disabled daughter from the inhuman Nazi regime.

It is being produced by Mammoth Studios and will be on BBC One next year.

The extent of Wigan’s inclusion in the final cut is yet to be decided.

PHOTO: Barricades grew up in Liberec. Again, the filmmakers settled here
Quote

Above the Libercans were floating flags with a hook cross and the streets guarded by the Nazi soldiers. Another film crew arrived in town again. This time it's a prestigious BBC company that looks for the location on the World's Fire TV series.
He has been filming in the Czech Republic since September and follows the fate of several heroes in each year of the war. The filmmakers occupied the city center for one day. Individual scenes were created in front of the theater, in  the Post Office and barricades, they grew up in front of St Antonín's Church. Due to shooting, some streets in the center were temporarily closed for drivers. Liberec is one of the favorite destinations for the production of historical films. Most recently, in the middle of October, the German-American film Resistance was also filmed during the Second World War.

Sean Bean goes back in time as he shoots scenes for the BBC's WWII epic World On Fire outside Manchester's Strangeways Prison

Quote
It was recently revealed that he spent some time with his former Game Of Thrones co-stars, as they shot a secret reunion special in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

But on Wednesday, Sean Bean was spotted working on a brand new project as he shot scenes for the BBC's epic World War II drama World On Fire in Manchester.

The 59-year-old actor cut a stylish figure in a spearmint shirt and grey cardigan, teamed with baggy green trousers and a grey flat cap as he got into character alongside Julia Brown outside the city's high-security Strangeways Prison.

Wrapping up in a black coat, he appeared to be in an upbeat mood as he strolled long the streets to shoot scenes for the anticipated seven-part miniseries.

BBC describes World On Fire as a drama 'following the first year of WWII told through the intertwining fates of ordinary people drawn from Britain, Poland, France, Germany and the United States' dealing with the war's effect on their lives.

Filming for the series, which was written by Peter Bowker, kicked off in September in Prague, with other locations including Paris, as well as Manchester.

At the time that he was announced as a castmember, Yorkshire-born Sean said in a statement: 'I am thrilled to be part of this ambitious drama.

'Peter Bowker’s study of the human stories that thread through this huge global conflict is fascinating and something I look forward to being part of on screen.'

The show will see Sean share screen time with a number stars, including Helen Hunt, Lesley Manville, Blake Harrison, Yrsa Daley-Ward, Ansu Kabia and Ewan Mitchell.

Sean's sighting on set comes after it was revealed that he met up with his Game Of Thrones castmates to shoot a reunion special in Belfast back in June.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the special – which was moderated by Conan O'Brien – is set to be included in the GoT box set, which will be released next year.

Speaking last month about the reunion, Sean – who played Ned Stark on GoT – told The Hollywood Reporter: 'They decided to get all the characters together for a bit for this big show in Belfast and he kind of hosted the evening.

'It was good! It's funny with work, you don't really keep in touch. You do so many types of jobs in that part of the world. It's just like whenever I see old friends or even old drama school friends, it's just the same, we pick up where we left off last time.'

The highly-anticipated last six episodes of Game Of Thrones, which will conclude the hit fantasy show's eighth and final season, are set to begin airing from April.

The BBC is filming a new Second World War drama starring Sean Bean and Helen Hunt in Manchester today.

'World On Fire' is a new seven-part series due to air later in 2019.

It tells the story of several families and individuals as war breaks out for a second time across Europe.

A large filming team began setting up in the area around Hilton Street last night and filming began from 7am on Wednesday.

Actors and extras in period costume were spotted milling around the city centre and pictures posted on Twitter show many of the streets have been dressed up to replicate the era.

Hilton Street and a section of China Lane will be closed today and Thursday.

In a letter sent to residents and businesses, the BBC production team said: "World on Fire is an ambitious seven-part drama which tells the intertwined stories of families and individuals across Europe at the outbreak of the Second World War.

"'World On Fire' is being prdocued by Mammoth Screen (Poldark, Victoria, Endeavour) for the BBC.

"It is being filmed entirel on location in the northwest this autumn and winter and is scheduled for transmission in 2019.

"Our filming will take place at the top of Hilton Street - next to The Met Apartment building.

"We will be filming all day on Wednesday from approximately 07:00-19:00 however our art department will be dressing the street on Tuesday, 8th January and then re-instating on Thursday.

"Due to all the activity that will be taking place on these three days we have asked and been granted permission to close Hilton Street (From The Met Apartments to Tariff Street) and a section of China Lane (North of Brewer Street).

"On Tuesday and Thursday these roads will be closed from 08:00-19:00. On Wednesday (our filming day) they will be closed from 07:00-19:00.

"We realise that filming on location would not be possible without the understanding and goodwill of local business and residents and so would like to extend our thanks in advance."
