Series 1 - Episode 5    Today 9pm - 10pm BBC One
Quote

Review
Belgium has fallen to the Germans and Harry, with his little band of fellows, trudges towards the coast, towards Dunkirk and rescue. But as the column of soldiers and refugees is strafed by bombers, Harry comes across a van with a sad cargo, a bunch of desperately traumatised men.

They have shell shock and Harry displays some very 21st-century sensibilities about both mental illness and racial prejudice, despite the scepticism of his cheerful everyman staff officer, Stan Raddings (Blake Harrison), to whom they are “mad lads” and a “truckful of loonies”.

There are some very impressive action sequences in Peter Bowker’s involving Second World War drama as the conflict reaches a crucial stage. But back home, pacifist dad Douglas (Sean Bean) finds the going tough, while his pregnant daughter, Lois, unexpectedly meets a kind man in the shape of a polite pilot (Arthur Darvill).

Summary

As thousands flee Nazi-occupied Belgium, Harry, Stan and the rest of their unit take the last route out of France - the road to Dunkirk, where Grzegorz fights his way to the front of a queue to board a boat - only to be thrown back by angry soldiers. In Manchester, Douglas finds solace in his rapport with Jan, as his growing anxiety about Tom pushes him to the brink, while in Berlin the Rosslers grow ever more fearful for Hilda. Second World War drama, starring Sean Bean, Helen Hunt and Blake Harrison.

Will there be a second series of World on Fire?
Quote
There’s already been bloodshed, tears and a lot of deaths, but BBC One’s World on Fire may not be over yet. At least, that’s according to writer Peter Bowker, who has said he plans for a second run of the WW2 drama.

But what exactly could happen in new episodes of the show? And who could star in them? Here’s everything you need to know…

Although a second series of the drama hasn’t been officially greenlit by the BBC, it’s likely World on Fire will return to screen. With episodes being watched by audiences of four million and above, the drama has proved more popular than the likes of Peaky Blinders.

If recommissioned, don’t expect the second run of World on Fire to land on screens any time soon. After being greenlit, the first series took almost two years to finish. Following this form, a new show wouldn’t arrive until late 2021

Series 1 - Episode 6   Today 9pm - 10pm BBC One
Quote

Review
There’s a dreadful and irrevocable act of utter despair in the penultimate episode of Peter Bowker’s drama that signals the base horror of Nazi occupation and the grotesque “cleansing” that is to come.

Paris has fallen and is over-run with louche Germans making themselves at home in other people’s houses. Internment has begun and Webster fears for his lover, black jazz musician Albert.

Back in Britain Lois has a very persistent admirer while her ex, Harry, brings yet another not-terribly-welcome visitor home to his mother. Out of the blue the War Office offers him a job with the winning words: “If you’re caught, the best you can hope for is a quick death.”

Summary
Paris falls to the Germans with not a single shot fired and Webster begins a campaign of resistance under the nose of the Nazis at the American hospital, while in Berlin, Mr and Mrs Rossler are arrested for neglecting their patriotic duties. Harry has returned home to Manchester with one of the Senegalese troops who stayed by his side to transport soldiers off Dunkirk beach, and is dumbfounded to learn that a newly formed special operations unit is interested in having him on board. Lois finds herself growing closer to Vernon.

Sean Bean, Helen Hunt and Lesley Manville head the cast of World on Fire, a seven-part series that follows ordinary people from across Europe as the continent becomes consumed by the Second World War.
In this DQ interview, writer Peter Bowker and executive producer Helen Ziegler reveal the origins of the series and explain how it follows the lives of multinational people on all sides of the global conflict.
They also discuss how they tried to distance the show from any elements of nostalgia, building the series around a love story between a British translator (Jonah Hauer-King) who falls in love with a Polish waitress (Zofia Wichłacz), despite his relationship with factory worker and singer Lois (Julia Brown) back home.
World on Fire is produced by Mammoth Screen for BBC1, and distributed by ITV Studios Global Entertainment.

"It was an amazing experience, as if I had acting lessons every day. It was great to watch him transform into this wonderful man every day, and in private he is very humorous and likeable," Brown said.
We are watching a great crew in the first episode of the World in Flames series on Sunday, November 10th at 9pm on Epic Drama.

World on Fire: thrilling TV that shows the true, terrifying cost of war

Chief plaudits clearly go to Lesley Manville and Sean Bean as Robina and Douglas, two people from very different backgrounds who are united by the sorrow and, perhaps more importantly, the residual wounds they both carry from the first world war.

Series 1 - Episode 7  Today 9pm - 10pm BBC One

Quote

Review
Harry, it’s time to stop crying, there’s a war to be fought. Dry your eyes, there’s a good lad. In the final episode of Peter Bowker’s drama weeping Harry (Jonah Hauer-King) prepares to be parachuted into enemy territory.

But first an awkward farewell with his brittle mother (Lesley Manville) and we learn a little more about why she is so unbending and chilly (though it’s worth remembering she’s given little Jan a proper and even loving home after Harry dumped him on her).

There’s an even more difficult parting with chippy Lois (Julia Brown), who’s about to have their baby. She’s being pursued by a cartoonish gung-ho pilot (Arthur Darvill) who bally well loves her. Pip pip!

Summary
On a Polish mission as part of the SOE, Harry grasps a second chance at saving Kasia from the horrors of Warsaw, while new mother Lois is surprised to be visited again by Vernon. Robina continues to appreciate her unlikely and surprising bond with Douglas and Jan, while Nancy promises Webster she will do all she can to help Albert. Last in the series.

Sean Bean World on Fire: What happened to Conscientious Objectors during the war?
SEAN BEAN stars as pacifist and Conscientious Objector (CO) Douglas Bennett in BBC’s World on Fire but what happened to men like him during the Second World War?

Quote
The final episode of World on Fire airs tonight at 9pm on BBC One. Game of Thrones star Sean Bean plays pacifist and Conscientious Objector (CO) Douglas Bennett in the series. Not only is Douglas a CO but he is also suffering terribly from PTSD from his experience of the First World War. Pacifists chose not to participate in combat for a number of reasons: their faith, non-religious belief in the sanctity of life and a practical belief that war is ineffective.

As seen in World on Fire, CO’s faced hostility from members of the public as patriotism swept across the United Kingdom between 1939 and 1945.
In reality, many CO’s in World War Two, still served in the war effort, signing up to work of national importance instead.
The Non-Combatant Corps (NCC) composed of CO’s who had been conscripted but had been registered as non-combatants.
There were also enlisted members of the NCC who had been deemed not physically fit for combatant service in the military, which lessened the stigma around the NCC.
Objectors could serve in the military non-combatant roles such as medics and ambulance drivers.
Those who objected to serving in the military altogether served on the home front as air raid wardens, in agriculture, forestry and cared for the mentally unwell.
Pacifist options during World War Two were limited in Britain, in comparison to the levels of the First World War.
A few organisations were operating such as the Peace Pledge Union, Society of Friends and The Fellowship of Reconciliation, which continues to operate.
Many CO’s from the First World War had changed their minds by the outbreak of World War Two, viewing the fight against fascism as necessary.

Historian Richard A Rempel explained in his article, The Dilemmas of British Pacifists During World War II: “World War Two raised difficult moral issues for British pacifists.
“By 1939, Nazi totalitarianism had made many pacifist convictions appear untenable and particularly in 1940, after the fall of France, many leading pacifists and thousands of the rank and file disavowed former principles and supported the war.”
The political party in Britain that was opposed to the war was Oswald Mosley and his British Union of Fascists, who believed a war with Germany was not in Britain’s national interest.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, Sean Bean said: “I read about it [CO’s] and I kind of know what it is and I read about the kind of isolation and the pacifist conscientious objector who is being ostracised by his community.
“It takes a hybrid of madness. He [Douglas Bennett] is a man of strong belief and the First World War coloured his view of the second impending war, and that's not a surprise in hindsight.
“I did some research into the issue. I guess we'll watch soldiers suffer when they've been through Iraq in the Middle East and Afghanistan, in a kind of more extreme version of that.
“I mean, he was a victim in my case. He was a victim of a mustard gas attack, which is pretty horrific and it left him with dreadful memories and flashbacks and left him anxious, depressed and manic in some cases, and he would it would very much influence his view of future wars.
“So that was why he is a pacifist, a conscientious objector. Because he saw his mates around him being blown to pieces. He didn't see war as a solution to the political conflict in Europe.”

In World on Fire, Douglas is a pacifist and hands out Peace News, a pacifist magazine, to passers-by on the street.
He even visits army recruitment centres to try and persuade young boys from joining the war effort.
However, when his son Tom (played by Ewan Mitchell) said he has become a pacifist and doesn't want to return to the navy, Douglas insisted he go back.
Douglas told his son to return as deep down, he believed the war is a war worth fighting in but he is too old to join the forces himself.
However, when his son went missing at Dunkirk, Douglas was consumed by guilt for sending his son back to the battlefield.
Bean explained: “Unfortunately for him, in hindsight, it was not the best war to be a pacifist because there was such a common enemy.
“I mean the German Nazi’s were such a threat that there was no alternative as there is today.
“There’s always an alternative today, dialogue and diplomacy but in that particular one here we didn't know what was going to happen, the difficult parts and brutality that was to come.
“And [WW1] is a war that young men went to as cannon fodder and they didn't know what they were fighting or understand what he was fighting. So, you can't blame him for how he reacted [to WW2]. “

Sweep of ‘World on Fire’ encompasses portrayals of ordinary lives
Quote
When screenwriter Peter Bowker decided to dramatize World War II, he looked at it through the prism of ordinary people whose otherwise ordinary lives had been overtaken by global events far beyond their control.

Though they lived in England, France, Poland and Germany, he imagined that, in unexpected ways, their lives had become intertwined.
The result was World on Fire, a seven-part Masterpiece scheduled for broadcast next spring.

You might think Bowker, 61, would have been influenced by such celebrated 1980s miniseries as Winds of War and its sequel, War and Remembrance, based on sprawling novels by Herman Wouk. But despite some similarities to those epic stories, his biggest inspiration was a 26-episode BBC documentary series, The World at War, broadcast in 1973 and 1974 and narrated by Laurence Olivier.

That landmark series examined the entirety of the war from military and civilian perspectives around the globe. Bowker challenged himself to create a drama with similar sweep and diverse points of reference.
His previous creations included the musical drama Blackpool (2004) and the subsequent CBS adaptation, Viva Laughlin. His 2009 series, Occupation, followed three military servicemen after their tours of duty in Iraq. Desperate Romantics (2009) was about the pre-Raphaelites. He has written an adaptation of Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights (2009) and a play, Flesh and Blood (2002), about sex and disability.

“He’s a varied guy, and his stories are character-driven,” said Masterpiece EP Rebecca Eaton. “But he’s also interested in big ideas. This gave him the opportunity to create a whole roomful of very distinct characters.”
Eaton first learned of the project from one of her regular conversations with Damien Timmer, managing director of Mammoth Screen. The company has produced several Masterpiece series, including Poldark, Endeavour and Victoria.
Timmer arranged for Eaton to meet Bowker in London in the summer of 2018. “He pretty much acted out six years of World War II. He described his intention to do this series from the individual’s point of view,” she said.

Eaton was impressed, though there were still other elements to be considered, including casting, directing and, of course, negotiating a price. “I think they very much wanted it to be on PBS,” she said. “As soon as we showed serious interest, they agreed to just talk to us exclusively.”
Masterpiece does not reveal the amount it pays for productions but, Eaton said, “I would say this isn’t cheap.”
The extent to which Masterpiece gets involved with actual production can vary. “In this case, there was a lot of trust,” Eaton said. “My feeling as an executive producer and as a minority partner is to give them the money, keep an eye on it but then get out of the way and allow them to fulfill the vision. That’s generally how we do it, but very much so with Mammoth because of what they’ve done.”
The three characters at the heart of the show are Harry Chase (Jonah Hauer-King of Little Women), a young English translator in Warsaw; Lois Bennett (Julia Brown of The Last Kingdom), his girlfriend at home; and Kasia Tomaszeski (Zofia Wichlacz), the Polish waitress with whom he falls in love and then tries to spirit out of the country.

Others in the cast include Helen Hunt (Mad About You), who plays Nancy Campbell, an American radio correspondent and the glue holding many of the other stories together. Lesley Manville (Midsomer Murders) plays Robina Chase, Harry’s domineering mother.
Sean Bean (Game of Thrones and Inspector Morse) plays Lois’ father, Douglas Bennett, a conscientious objector during World War I who is shellshocked from his service in a non-combat role. The character is modeled to an extent on Bowker’s own grandfather, a bus driver whose experiences in World War I, including a mustard gas attack, caused a condition now referred to as PTSD.
While all characters are fictional, Bowker conducted extensive research at London’s Imperial War Museum to learn more about the concerns of people at that time, from the trivial to the aspirational. At the museum, he discovered a trove of diaries written as part of a project to encourage people to record their feelings.

Bowker told a group of journalists that he asked the museum if there were diaries about Polish life during the war. “Within a couple of days, they found me two translated diaries of young women, one of whom was a waitress working in Warsaw,” he said.
Helen Ziegler, an EP for Mammoth, said Bowker was searching for a common humanity. “What he does and what he evokes is the idea of what it would be like for a Harry and a Kasia to be falling in love with the world as their oyster and then the bombs start to fall,” she said.
“Pete was fascinated by the questions — Do you stay? Do you run? Do you hide or do you fight? Not putting judgment on that, but just asking the question,” Ziegler said.

Although there’s no intention to deliver a history lesson, each of the seven episodes is organized around a significant event during the first year of the war. These include the invasion of Poland, the evacuation at Dunkirk, the fall of Paris and the start of the Battle of Britain.
“There are many more stories to tell,” Ziegler said. “I know Peter has planned where the characters go and what they end up doing throughout the war.”
The BBC began broadcasting the series in October and has not yet announced a decision about additional seasons.
“So far, so good in terms of how it’s going in the U.K.,” Eaton said. “Hopefully, we’ll all know in the next few months and definitely before we air in the spring.”

Chonkinfeckle on set of the BBC drama 'World on Fire'
Quote
Wigan band Chonkinfeckle have a mooch at some of the Wigan sets used in the brilliant BBC  WWII drama 'World on Fire'. Filmed back in November 2018 using multiple rooms at the Old Courts complex and on location in Kendal Street, it is amazing to see how much effort goes into making one of these programmes.
