'World On Fire' Actresses Tell Their Experiences Of ENSA
'World on Fire' cast tell us what it's like to act opposite Sean Bean as ENSA performers during WW2.
Quote
Following the end of the first series of the BBC drama 'World on Fire', BFBS speaks to actresses Julia Brown and Yrsa Daley-Ward to find out what it was like to play the parts of historic wartime entertainers.

Lois, alongside working for ENSA, finds herself pregnant whilst nursing a broken heart and also caring for her father (played by Sean Bean), a former soldier suffering shell shock from his time serving in the First World War.

Working with her onscreen father was ‘daunting’ initially but Julia said:
“Sean was amazing to work with. He was so down to earth and humble and really generous to work opposite and just kind and lovely.”

A young Gdynia citizen in the BBC series. Beside him, Sean Bean and Tomasz Kot

Quote
His sister took him to the casting. During the audition, however, he got an invitation to a completely different production. This is how the adventure of Eric Biedunkiewicz with the series "Świat w ogniu" produced by BBC began. The young actor from Gdynia made his debut on the screen in good company - on the set he met, among others Sean Bean, Tomasz Kot, Zofia Wichłacz or Agata Kulesza. Eryk Biedunkiewicz is a graduate of the Gdynia Valldal Comedy Theater . He hit the miniseries "World on fire" quite by accident. The boy's sister, Nina, took her brother to a student etude, which was organized in Gdańsk. It turned out that on-site recruitment for the latest production carried out under the banner of the BBC was carried out. So Eryk tried his hand, and after a few months he received an invitation to the next stage of the casting in Warsaw. Here, he met directly with the creators of the series, whom he convinced so successfully that he took one of the main children's roles.

Spotlight: Stars Coming to MASTERPIECE
Quote
Actor Sean Bean first stormed onto the MASTERPIECE screen as Richard Sharpe in the hard-hitting action series Sharpe, based on the books by Bernard Cornwell. But the adventures haven’t stopped for Bean who has appeared in Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones and many other adrenaline-fueled films and television shows. In World on Fire, Bean takes on a very different role as Douglas Bennett, a father whose experiences of war have made him an ardent pacifist. But as his own children go off to the war, Bennett is left both bereft and brave. “Douglas was involved in the First World War and was so mentally damaged by shell shock that it has an influence on how he viewed everything to do with the Second World War,” Bean said. “He doesn’t believe in war as a means of achieving objectives. He thinks there should be negotiation and people should be trying to communicate.”

World on Fire
(BBC One) Peter Bowker’s ambitious wartime drama, featuring both the burning home fires and the plight of families in Germany and Poland, was an emotional tour de force right to its flabbergastingly open ending.
What we said: There is plenty of action, for those who want it, but this is far from the standard wartime miniseries. It is a beautifully turned ensemble piece, with everyone getting their time in the spotlight. Read the full review.

World On Fire tells story of 'ordinary people' during World War II
Quote
World On Fire, a sweeping drama with an international cast, tells the story of World War II through the eyes of ordinary people from around the world.
When Stuff was invited to talk to the cast and creative team behind the show, it soon became evident just how epic it was in nature.

"Douglas (Bean) is a bus conductor and father to Lois and Tom," says Bean. "And he brings them up on his own after their mother died and he's struggling a little bit because of his experience with the First World War where he suffered with what then would be called shell shock and now post-traumatic stress disorder.
"He is a beaten man in some ways. You can still see the strong character that he once was but he's been battered and shocked and demoralised by the bloodshed and the horror that he saw.
"Back then people like him were treated as though there was something wrong with them. Often they were thought not to be 'real men' or that they were 'cowards'.
"And it's so sad because they were men and they were strong men and they went to war and they came back mentally disturbed because of the physical things around them – their mates next to them getting their heads blasted off. You can't say that's not going to affect you. It would traumatise even the strongest of men. I imagine it would have traumatised me very much and that I would have come back a different man.
"He's a conscientious objector when World War II breaks out and he gets a hard time from people because of that.

"He is closer to his daughter than he is to his son. She keeps everything together and is domestic.
"She does all the washing and cooking and tidying up, as women did in those days. But it's not so much the domestic chores, it's her moral influence and strength on the family that keeps them together. If it wasn't for her I think they would fall apart.
"Then he meets this woman, Robina (Lesley Manville), who is upper middle class, snobbish and has quite a lot of money and lives in a grand house. They are totally different but they later find that they have a lot in common and help bring out the best traits in each other."

World on Fire is a searing portrait of ordinary folk in wartime
Quote
In the Netflix era, it’s go big or go home, and the BBC is doing the former in seven-part series World on Fire (TVNZ 1, Sunday, 8.45pm), which dramatises the lives of ordinary people in five countries during World War II.

Premieres Sunday 5 January 8.45pm on TVNZ 1
Helen Hunt (Mad About You) and Sean Bean (Game of Thrones) star in this beautifully-shot, sweeping historical drama following the intertwined lives of ordinary civilians across Europe who are caught up in World War II.
An English translator in Warsaw attempts to smuggle his Polish lover back to Manchester. Meanwhile, an American war correspondent makes a discovery at the Polish-German border and runs up against censorship in Germany.
Each of the characters are from different backgrounds and countries, and play different roles in the war, but are united by their struggle to survive in difficult circumstances.
