However, the biggest disappointment is the character of Douglas Bennett, played by the iconic Sean Bean. Lois and Tom’s father isn’t given much to do, particularly in the first three episodes. It’s a shame to have an actor as talented as Bean relegated to such a marginal role.

Already renewed for a second season – although that was pre-global pandemic, so who knows if it will come to fruition – writer Peter Bowker said he’s planned out the series for the characters established in season one but he did it with eyes open to the realities of show business. Unlike commercial series, where the whole cast is locked in for years up front, on a production like this it’s more year-by-year for some of the big name cast members, which means not all of the actors may be available when it comes time to film season two, originally planned to started production in September, although now, who knows when it might happen.
“I know that people like Sean and Helen and Lesley may well be demanded on other projects, and this young cast, who have now broken through so spectacularly, will also be in demand,” Mr. Bowker said in January during the PBS portion of the Television Critics Association winter 2020 press tour in Pasadena, Calif. “Everybody at the moment wants to come back.”

‘Masterpiece’ recalls ‘World on Fire’ with WWII drama
Quote
Many stories have dramatized World War II, but familiar faces and age-appropriate actors can bring that event into fresh focus again.
“World on Fire” has both elements as the British-American co-production begins its PBS “Masterpiece” run Sunday at 9 p.m. Written by Peter Bowker (“Blackpool”) and set in 1939 in everal countries that were at the forefront of the conflict including America and England.

Even before “World on Fire” starts its U.S. telecasts, it’s known there will be more of it, since a second season already has been ordered. “We do a lot of World War II homefront dramas that may take in one part of the war,” Bowker said, “so I just hope (this) will carry on getting recommissioned. I’m not naive enough to suppose that that’s a done deal. Hopefully, the longer it goes on, the more people will want to find out what happens next. In my head, there’s a huge series bible which I planned out for all these characters, but I take it for granted we will lose some along the way.”

World on Fire's Julia Brown Reveals Why Sean Bean Made Her Cry During the Season Finale
Quote
"We had this baby who was only four days old who played my newborn. He was playing a girl, but he was so sweet. He's so tiny. And then, it was really special doing the scene with Sean, as well. Because we shot it quite near the end of the series and I think we were all quite emotionally exhausted. And there's a little bit where Sean comes in and he's got tears in his eyes and he strokes the baby's head. And I think I cried in response to Sean, because he just looked so heart-warmed by the tiny little baby."

Quote
World on Fire has already been renewed for a second season, but Brown was tight-lipped about what's to come for her character.
"It's all under lock and key, but I know Pete has been busy writing," she tells me."We're going to start production in September, but with the current global situation you never know if that's going to be pushed back. I'm just excited to reunite with everyone and do it all again. It's been a dream of a job."
World on Fire is available to stream through the PBS Passport app, or on Amazon Prime.

I've seen 2 episodes with my wife so far and we're really enjoying it.

Too bad about BAFTA, but maybe he will have luck at the Emmys this year. It be nice to see his work be more recognized.

At least he has 2 highly prestigious awards already! I'd love to see him do something meaty on the silver screen.

Well... 0 nominations for World on Fire. Disappointing but not unexpected.

Sean Bean is fantastic in this. But they also didn't nominate Tom Pelphrey for Ozark, which boggles my mind as well.
