From the end of this month, the British Second World War series World on Fire will be  broadcast on NPO 2. The broadcaster announced today. The series, which was produced by Masterpiece, features an impressive cast that includes Sean Bean, Helen Hunt and Lesley Manville.

World on Fire  was developed by Masterpiece - also responsible for series such as Baptiste, Sherlock  and  Wallander - and appeared on the British channel BBC One in 2019. Although the production had the resources and cast to put down a rock-solid series, the reviews were somewhat disappointing. However, they were enough to make the developers decide to add a second season. When this season will appear on British television, it is not yet known, but the first season can be seen weekly on NPO 2 and on NPO Start from 25 October. Subscribers to NPO Plus can also watch the entire first season from this date.

I hope it's not the same edited version that was screened last year in the Netherlands on BBC First Benelux.

Trailer: NPO comes with brutal war series with Game of Thrones star
Quote
NPO comes with World on Fire
The production was broadcast on BBC One in 2019. That creates high expectations, because if the British are known for something when it comes to this kind of historical series, then it is quality.

World on Fire follows several people just before the Second World War broke out. An American journalist played by Helen Hunt tries to keep up with the burgeoning chaos and put it on paper, something that is becoming increasingly difficult. Sean Bean plays a bus driver who continues to struggle with the PTSD he contracted in World War I and Jonah Hauer-King plays Harry, an ambitious civil servant who works at the British Embassy.

Second season
You can of course also start streaming the series on NPO Start, completely free of charge. Paying subscribers do not have to wait for new episodes and can then check the entire first season in one fell swoop.

Hopefully World on Fire will also make an impression in the Netherlands, because the British are already working on a second season. Unfortunately, it is not yet known when those new episodes will be broadcast by BBC One.

With Sean Bean working on Snowpiercer and a miniseries, and Helen Hunt now signed on to another show, and how time keeps passing with no news, I think it is unfortunately likely that season 2 will not happen.

When will ‘World on Fire’ Season 2 begin filming?
Quote
World on Fire fans are set for an even further wait before the second season arrives.

From the makers of Poldark and Endeavour, the show launched in the UK back in September 2019.

Opening with the German invasion of Poland in September 1939 and ending with the Battle of Britain in 1940, World on Fire takes viewers across the first year of World War II, from ordinary life in Manchester to the beaches of Dunkirk.

The hit period drama series received great reviews and premiered in the US early last year.

World on Fire was officially renewed in November 2019, and the new episodes were originally meant to start filming last year.

However, production was delayed due to the coronavirus pande

Spanning the years 1940 to 1941, the new season of World on Fire will open with the blitz in the Northwest of England.

All the main cast are expected to reprise their roles, including Oscar-winner Helen Hunt (As Good As It Gets), Sharpe star Sean Bean, Lesley Manville (Mum), and Jonah Hauer-King (Little Women).

Zophia Wichlacz and Julia Brown, who play Kasia and Lois, have already revealed some hints about what to expect.

Unfortunately, it looks like Season 2 won’t be ready anytime soon!

Jonah Hauer-King, who plays Harry, is currently busy filming Disney’s new live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.

The 25-year-old English-American actor is playing Prince Eric in the movie, and the shoot is expected to continue for many more months.

Even if World on Fire is able to resume filming this summer, we wouldn’t expect it to premiere until spring 2022 at the earliest.

Jonah Hauer-King previously discussed the status of Season 2 last year: “It’s off the books right now, but I know that they remain fully committed to making it. I’ve spoken with the writer, with Peter [Bowker] in the last week and he’s been giving me updates.”

He added: “The scripts are very much in the works. As to when we actually start shooting is anyone’s guess. Unfortunately, I think you know, this this [coronavirus] crisis has thrown up all kinds of issues. It’s big crews, big sets, so yeah, we’ll just have to wait and see when we get the green light.”

Luckily, American viewers can catch the first season again on Sunday nights on PBS Masterpiece next month, airing after new Second World War drama Atlantic Crossing.

World on Fire is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.

TV QA: When will 'Yellowstone' and 'World on Fire' return?
Quote
Q: Can you find out if there is going to be another installment to "World on Fire," which premiered on PBS in the winter of 2019? This was an excellent series starring Helen Hunt. It left several characters' stories unfinished, and we are hoping it will carry on from it left off.

A: The first season of the wartime drama was well received, and a second season has been announced. But I do not know when it will begin. Production was delayed during the pandemic, and one report said it will return late in 2021 at the earliest.

On the “Masterpiece” website, “World on Fire” creator Peter Bowker offered this teaser for the second season: “Kasia and Lois will meet, and the fallout from that, I think for everybody, will be interesting and fascinating. Season 2 will start, historically, with the blitz in the Northwest of England. And North Africa will be very much the field of battle. We’ll find out more about Webster’s family history. Nancy will finally have to leave Berlin near the start of the series, for crossing a line, and we will also find out more about Nancy. And she will carry on. She will definitely be in the Soviet Union for some of it. So yeah, that’s the shape it’s taking. And Lois, of course, trapped in a rather Bronte-esque, loveless marriage with Vernon.”

'World on Fire' Season 2 First Look Teases the Return of the WWII Series
Quote
After a successful first season on PBS Masterpiece and BBC, the hit drama World on Fire is going back to WWII to continue the stories of the ordinary people caught up in the crosshair of conflict. Three years after the first season aired on BBC and two since it crossed over to Masterpiece, filming has officially begun on Season 2 after delays due to the ongoing pandemic. The announcement comes with a new photo of series star Jonah Hauer-King with clapboard in hand preparing to shoot once more.

Written by creator Peter Bowker, Rachel Bennette, and Matt Jones, the six new episodes of World on Fire will immediately follow the events of its first season. Set in October 1940, the new season will see the horrors of war finally reach home in Britain as pilots take to the skies to shoot down German bombers in the skies above Manchester. Once again, viewers will be taken across the European theatre from Britain to now-occupied France and Nazi Germany, but a new type of conflict will be introduced in North Africa where British troops, Indian Sappers, and Australian Diggers fight together against the Axis forces.

Much of the cast from Season 1 is returning with Lesley Manville reprising her role as Robina, Hauer-King as Harry, Julia Brown as Lois, Zofia Wichlacz as Kasia, Blake Harrison as Stan, Eugénie Derouand as Henriette, Eryk Biedunkiewicz as Jan, and Cel Spellman as Joe. There's no confirmation if some of the previous season's other big faces like Helen Hunt will be returning, however. Some new faces will be joining the war effort this time around, with Mark Bonnar (Guilt, Line of Duty) leading the new additions as Sir James Danemere along with Ahad Raza Mir (Resident Evil, Hum Tum) as Rajib, and Gregg Sulkin (Runaways, Pretty Smart) as David. More casting announcements are still to come for the series.

Filming begins on series two of World On Fire
Filming has begun on the return of the BBC's hit drama, World On Fire
Quote
Telling the story of World War Two through the eyes of ordinary people whose lives have been thrown into chaos, the six new episodes are written by series creator Peter Bowker, Rachel Bennette and Matt Jones, and made by Mammoth Screen for the BBC and Masterpiece.

October 1940. Lone pilots are sent to destroy German bombers prowling the skies above Manchester as the Northern Blitz begins. The true reality of war has arrived in Britain.

World On Fire series two will take viewers from the streets of Britain into occupied France, Nazi Germany, and to the sands of the North African desert, where British troops struggle alongside Indian Sappers and Australian Diggers to adapt to a very different kind of combat.

Returning cast include Lesley Manville as Robina, Jonah Hauer-King as Harry, Julia Brown as Lois, and Zofia Wichlacz as Kasia, with Blake Harrison as Stan, Eugénie Derouand as Henriette, Eryk Biedunkiewicz as Jan, and Cel Spellman as Joe.

Joining the World On Fire cast for series two are Mark Bonnar (Guilt, Line Of Duty) as Sir James Danemere, Ahad Raza Mir (Resident Evil, Hum Tum) as Rajib, and Gregg Sulkin (Runaways, Pretty Smart) as David. Further new and returning cast will be announced in due course.

Lesley Manville says: “It’s wonderful to be bringing Peter Bowler’s epic scripts to life again. Rich characters telling great, human stories set against the backdrop of World War Two. It’s a feast!”

World On Fire creator and writer Peter Bowker says: "The second season of World On Fire has been a long wait due to a certain pandemic and this makes the beginning of filming especially exciting. It has been a real joy to pick up the story with our inspirational cast, both our established regulars and new and exciting talent who have embraced the show’s scale and ambition.

"How the conflict played out in North Africa is a fascinating and little-explored history and we are aiming to redress that balance with stories of struggle and friendship. Our diverse cast will continue to reflect the global nature of the conflict.”

Helen Ziegler, Director of Television at Mammoth Screen, says: “Peter Bowker gives us an extraordinary insight into the second year of World War II with his unique humanity, humour and pathos. This is a drama which poses the question: how do you survive when everything around you has changed unimaginably? We are absolutely thrilled to be returning for this epic and adrenalized series two of World On Fire, with our wonderful returning cast joined by a host of new characters!”

Ben Irving, Acting Director of BBC Drama, says: “With a range of intriguing, untold stories that put ordinary people at the centre of history, and a first-rate ensemble of both new and returning characters, it’s a real pleasure to see filming on World On Fire series two now underway.”

Susanne Simpson, executive producer for Masterpiece, says: “World On Fire captivated our Masterpiece audience and we’re thrilled to bring them another season of this ambitious World War II drama. With Peter Bowker’s riveting scripts, a talented returning cast plus some intriguing new characters, season two will definitely be worth the wait.”

Filming on series two is currently underway in Northern Ireland. World On Fire series one aired on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in autumn 2019, where it averaged 6.7 million viewers (30-day consolidated data). The second series will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in 2023.
