Berlin: Sean Bean, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Stacy Martin Board Sci-Fi Thriller 'Possessor'
Quote
The trio is joining Andrea Riseborough and Christopher Abbott in Brandon Cronenburg's second feature, being shopped in Berlin by Arclight.

Sean Bean (Game of Thrones), Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight) and Stacy Martin (Nymphomaniac) are joining Andrea Riseborough and Christopher Abbott in Possessor.

The sci-fi thriller – the second feature from Brandon Cronenberg (Antiviral), son of David Cronenberg – is being produced by Fraser Ash, Niv Fichman, and Kevin Krikst of Rhombus Media, and Andy Starke of Rook Films, and is slated to start production in April on location in Canada.

Cronenberg directs from his own script, which follows Tasya Vos (Riseborough), an agent for a secretive organization that uses brain-implant technology to inhabit other people’s bodies, driving them to commit assassinations for the benefit of high-paying clients. But something goes wrong on a routine job, and she soon finds herself trapped in the mind of an unwitting suspect (Abbott) whose appetite for violence turns out to rival her own.

Arclight Film’s Gary Hamilton, Ying Ye, and Ryan Hamilton will exec produce, alongside Steven Squillante and David U. Lee of Leeding Media, Noah Segal and Adrian Love of Elevation Pictures, and Tony Roman. Well Go USA Entertainment have already picked up Possessor for the U.S., with Elevation Pictures set to distribute in Canada. Arclight Films is representing foreign rights for the sci-fi thriller at the European Film Market in Berlin.

“In addition to being exceptionally talented, Sean, Jennifer and Stacy have immense international appeal that perfectly rounds out the cast,” said Hamilton. “Under Cronenberg’s keen cinematic eye and teamed with the equally impressive Christopher and Andrea, this is the perfect complete package that makes Possessor a must have for our buyers.”

Possessor is produced with the participation of Telefilm Canada and Ontario Creates.

Bean is repped by ICM Partners and Independent Talent Group. Leigh is repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment. Martin is repped by WME, Agence Adequat and 42 Management.

This was shot on the film set of a new Sean Bean movie that I was fortunate enough to be invited to. This photo was taken during one of the takes - they let me wander around the set getting some behind the scenes photos

Cannes First Look: Christopher Abbot in Brandon Cronenberg's Sci-Fi Thriller 'Possessor' (Exclusive)
Quote
The film also stars Andrea Riseborough, Rossif Sutherland, Tuppence Middleton, Sean Bean and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Christopher Abbott – soon to be seen in George Clooney’s Catch 22 TV series – sports a pair of peculiar goggles in this first-look still from Possessor, coming from writer/director Brandon Cronenberg.

Arclight is in Cannes selling international rights to the sci-fi thriller, which also stars Andrea Riseborough, Rossif Sutherland, Tuppence Middleton, Sean Bean and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Cronenberg – whose feature-length directorial debut Antiviral premiered in the Un Certain Regard competition in Cannes in 2012 – wrote the script, which centers around Tasya Vos (Riseborough), an agent for a secretive organization who uses brain-implant technology to inhabit other people’s bodies, driving them to commit assassinations for the benefit of high-paying clients. But something goes wrong on a routine job, and Vos soon finds herself trapped in the mind of an unwitting suspect (Abbott) whose appetite for violence turns out to rival her own.

Producers include Fraser Ash, Niv Fichman, and Kevin Krikst of Rhombus Media (Enemy, Into The Forest) and Andy Starke of Rook Films (Free Fire, Kill List). Arclight’s Gary Hamilton and Ryan Hamilton are exec producing.

Possessor has already been snapped up for North America, with Well Go USA striking a deal for U.S. distribution and Elevation Pictures coming on board for Canada.

’I try not to pay attention’: Despite a focus on sci-fi, Brandon Cronenberg isn’t defining his career by his father’s success
Quote
When Brandon Cronenberg was working on his new film Possessor and hit a slow patch, he did what any self-respecting director would do; he made another film during his down time.

“I had nothing to do and was kind of itching to make something,” says Cronenberg, sitting in the Canada pavilion at the Cannes Film Festival, a handy beachfront meeting place for Canuck film types over the festival’s 12 days. “My cinematographer Karim Hussain and I had been experimenting with visuals for the feature … and decided to make the short as a way to blow off steam and also to test the ideas we wanted to use for the feature.”

Cronenberg was last at Cannes with his feature debut, Antiviral. That was 2012, the same year his father, David Cronenberg, had his film Cosmopolis in competition. Brandon says the years between features is because, as a new filmmaker, he poured everything into making that first film, and had nothing else in the works.

That’s changed now. Possessor just finished principal photography in Toronto, and will be ready to screen within a year. “I would certainly love to play in Cannes next year, but it depends on the timing,” he says. “And you can’t assume you’re just going to get in.” He also has two more films in the script stage, Infinity Pool and Dragon, one of which he hopes to start shooting later this year.

All are science-fiction tales. Possessor, starring Jennifer Jason Leigh, Sean Bean, Christopher Abbott and Andrea Riseborough, is about an organization that uses brain implants to control people and use them to carry out assassinations. Cronenberg says Infinity Pool is softer sci-fi, while Dragon is “an outer space horror film.”
