Sean Bean to front doc on Waterloo for History

Quote

Actor Sean Bean is to present a two-hour documentary marking the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo for pay-TV broadcaster History.

The A+E Networks UK channel has commissioned Wavelength Films, which produced BBC4’s Stephen Fry And The Gutenberg Press and Suggs’ Italian Job for Sky Arts, to make The Battle Of Waterloo Presented By Sean Bean (w/t).

It will air in June 2015 around the anniversary of the epic battle, in which Napoleon’s French Army was defeated in Belgium.

Game Of Thrones star Bean will be familiar with the story, having played Richard Sharpe in ITV’s Napoleonic War drama Sharpe, based on Bernard Cornwell’s novels about a fictional soldier.

History and H2 director of programming Rachel Job said Bean was top of the list of talent to front the documentary. “We didn’t go after him in a massive way because we thought he’s really busy and really famous, and then Wavelength came to us with him and the idea about Waterloo,” she said. “It’s about picking the subject matter that the talent wants to do, and he’s always been interested in Waterloo and the Napoleonic War.”

The Battle Of Waterloo Presented By Sean Bean will use evidence from eyewitness accounts alongside present-day military experts to tell the story of the battle. Bean will work with these experts to test the weapons and tactics that shaped the outcome of the conflict and compare them with modern strategies.

Job said the commission highlights History’s strategy of presenting traditional documentaries “through a different lens” and follows Bannockburn, a graphic novel-style film produced by Sky Vision and Arcadia Content.

The Battle Of Waterloo Presented By Sean Bean has also been prebought by History’s sister channels in Germany, Latin America, Italy, Iberia, Australia and New Zealand. Job said although it is a UK commission, these deals will help boost the show’s budget. “As soon as I mentioned it to the other channels, they jumped on it. Game Of Thrones is massive around the world,” she added.

The doc begins filming in the UK and Belgium this month. It will be executive produced by Wavelength Films’ Patrick McGrady.

200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo marked with Sean Bean fronted documentary

Quote
“I am excited to be following in the footsteps of Sharpe and those who fought in the Battle of Waterloo, to tell the story of this iconic battle, on HISTORY.” – Sean Bean
http://www.atvtoday.co.uk/63292-history/

This made me think of an article from the Radio Times where Sean and his then girlfriend Abigail Cruttenden visited Waterloo in 1997.

From our archives "Sharpe's Waterloo"

Quote
I have come here to accompany Sean Bean on a special pilgrimage, a chance
for him to pay homage to the soldiers who gave their lives for King and
Country in a battle that he himself re-enacts in Sharpe's Waterloo, the
third and final Sharpe film in a new run of ITV's action-adventure series that
begins on Wednesday with Sharpe's Revenge. "I've always wanted to come
here ever since I started doing Sharpe and got interested in the Napoleonic
Wars, so it seems fitting, now I've finished, that I should experience the
 place for myself."

He is clearly moved and stands brooding, looking out across the walled
garden to the ploughed field beyond, now the site of an unmarked mass grave.
"Where we were standing there were 4000 Frenchmen buried, yet you look
at the soil and it's so hard to conceive what has happened here. I'm really
pleased I've come . . . I think it's important that people do remember this,
that thousands of people died for a reason. It would be tragic if that were
 forgotten."

He has read up on the period - "You can't help but get interested, it's
fascinating" - and has a collection of mementos sent to him by ex-soldiers. He's
also hung on to a few of his props: "Sharpe's invitation to the Prince Regent's
Ball, that's up on the wall, and I've got me sword, an original, made in 1810,
and me green rifleman's jacket, I love that."

He's voicing a new documentary about Waterloo which would not be possible without reenacting some of Wellington's artillery.

Left foot forward (a journey into reenactment)

A date with M Haricot.

Quote
Do I want to stay at Fort Amherst for a weekend of documentary film making (with Sean Bean!) with lots of friends, and an evening out.. YES PLEASE! This seemed like an event to look forward to, even the prospect of sleeping in an unheated brick and cobble guardroom in January seemed more of a challenge/experience than an unpleasantness. Off to Chatham!

The filming schedule was indeed a bit annoying and sometimes non sensical and even two breakfasts couldn't stop some grumbles even from me.. who had earlier chided others for moaning. They wanted a scene with a big French column marching out of the smoke with Mr Bean (not that one) in the middle but insisted on filming small interviews and such that could be done any time.. whilst it grew dark and people had to start leaving to get home. Then as we stood in the dark waiting we learnt Mr Bean was doing the whole photos thing now (instead of later as scheduled) and we arrived just in time to miss it. I tell myself I am not someone who cares about celebrity and never ask people for autographs. But I did feel more disappointed than I would care to admit. Which obviously I just have.

Sort of evidence of Sean Bean sighting. He doesn't half jump when a cannon goes off! I did later say Hi and he was amiable, he's really not one for small talk, or for that matter, talk.

PICTURE SPECIAL: Game of Thrones star Sean Bean films at Napoleonic fort

Actor Sean Bean returned to the scene of where he shot parts of the acclaimed TV drama Sharpe at the weekend as he prepared for a new historic drama.

The star of the likes of Games of Thrones, James Bond and a host of other major movies, was at Chatham’s Fort Amherst to help film a documentary

The Battle of Waterloo aims to provide a ground-level perspective on the battle in 1815.

He had last been at the historic site, constructed during Napoleonic times in preparation for a possible invasion, during 1993 to 1997 as he filmed Sharpe.

Chairman of the Fort Amherst Heritage Trust, Les Snowdon, a charity which maintains and restores the 20-acre site, said: “It was freezing cold but everyone stayed in great spirits all day, including Sean who arrived at 9.15am and didn’t leave until about 6pm.”

The documentary will be shown on the digital channel History UK and will be a two-hour special airing to mark the 200th anniversary of the battle in June.

The star spent the day working with a team of soldiers and experts testing the weapons and tactics that shaped the outcome of the battle - the results of which could be heard all around Chatham as guns and cannons were fired throughout the day.

Edmund Gulvin, a trustee and Napoleonic re-actor said: “It was amazing to see the artillery being used surrounded by so many uniformed soldiers. It really brought history alive - and as that’s one of our main objectives here at Fort Amherst we’re very grateful to the documentary makers for choosing our site for filming.”

Fort Amherst has enjoyed various large-scale filming projects recently as it is one of Britain’s largest Napoleonic fortresses. Its vast and fascinating grounds, buildings and famous underground tunnels are all open to the public, but also make an ideal alternative to expensive and time consuming sets.

Fort Amherst was used extensively during the filming of acclaimed television series Sharpe in the 1990s, which starred Sean Bean as Richard Sharpe, a fictional British soldier in the Napoleonic Wars.

He said: "I am excited to be following the footsteps of Sharpe and those who fought in the Battle of Waterloo to tell the story of this iconic battle on History."

Battle of Waterloo marked with Sean Bean History special

Quote
The History channel have announced more details of their special Sean Bean fronted series Waterloo, which will mark the 200th anniversary of the famous battle in an exclusive UK commission.

Inspired by his own experiences of playing Richard Sharpe, Sean draws on eyewitness accounts recorded by those who fought at Waterloo to tell the story of the dramatic events.  Piecing together the chronology of the battle, Sean visits some of the legendary locations including the buildings at Hougoumont, where some of the heaviest fighting took place.

Sean’s journey of discovery sees him learn how to fire cannon, shoot a Waterloo Musket and gain a gory insight into this unforgettable and historic battle 200 years ago. The two hour, one off special was commissioned exclusively for HISTORY and was made with the support and expertise of the British Army and the Royal Armouries.

The intriguing and fascinating insight into the ordinary soldier’s battle, Sean Bean on Waterloo, premieres on Sunday 14th June 2015 at 10pm, on HISTORY. The series was first announced back in December last year.

Sean Bean on Waterloo

Quote
Hollywood actor Sean Bean tells the story of Waterloo, one of history’s most decisive battles.

Sean’s journey of discovery is inspired by his own experiences of playing Napoleonic soldier Richard Sharpe in TV films based on Bernard Cornwell’s best-selling novels. In the programmes he draws on the eye-witness accounts of soldiers who fought at Waterloo to tell the story of the dramatic events of 18 June 1815 as they were experienced by the ordinary soldiers who fought it.

He pieces together the chronology of the battle and visits some of the legendary places where the outcome was decided, including the buildings at Hougoumont which witnessed some of the heaviest fighting. He also meets descendants of some of the soldiers who fought at Waterloo, to discover how they remember the achievements of their ancestors.

To bring their stories to life he works alongside present-day soldiers from the British army and experts in military history and stages hands-on experiments that bring him closer to the reality of fighting at Waterloo. At the Royal Armouries in Leeds he fires an original Waterloo musket, loaded with live ammunition, and takes part in an experiment to test the damage caused by original Waterloo cavalry swords. He works with re-enactors from the Napoleonic Association to find out more about the infantry and artillery tactics used in the battle.

He also witnesses the damage caused by an original Waterloo cannon using live ammunition. In Belgium he meets the archaeologist responsible for the unique discovery of the skeleton of a Waterloo soldier who died during the battle and whose remains lay undiscovered on the battlefield for almost 200 years, in the exact spot where the soldier died.

Quote

Sean Bean on Waterloo Part 1
Sean Bean begins his journey of discovery at Chatham in South East England, where a large group of history enthusiasts are rehearsing to take part in a huge re-enactment of the battle to mark its 200th anniversary in June 2015. From here he travels to Belgium to visit the site of the battle.

He meets historian Professor Saul David, who describes how the British General Lord Wellington prepared to face the threat of his great adversary, the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.

Sean Bean on Waterloo Part 2

In Waterloo Sean stands with historian Professor Saul David where the British and French infantry first clashed at Waterloo. He then travels to Yorkshire in England to explore the role played by cavalry at Waterloo. He meets cavalry experts Alan Larsen and David Blackmore who explain the roles played by light and heavy cavalry units.

At the Royal Armouries in Leeds Sean sees examples of original cavalry sword used during the battle and discovers the training manual used to prepare horsemen for battle.

I'm guessing that date is wrong - surely, with the battle being in June, the dates for the doc. to air should be closer to the actual centenary?  Otherwise, I've missed it completely!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

History comes alive with Sean Bean On Waterloo

Quote
The incredible tale of the only battle to have a London train station named after it is breathtakingly brought to life on its 200th anniversary in this two-part documentary, with help from Hollywood A-lister Sean Bean.

Inspired by playing a Napoleonic War soldier in the hit series Sharpe, Bean picks over first-hand accounts, discovers the damage a cavalry sword can do, talks to military experts and treads the very battleground itself, to piece together the clash that changed the course of history.

Sean Bean On Waterloo begins Sunday 14 June at 10pm and concludes Sunday 21 June at 10pm on HISTORY, BT channel 327 – or enjoy on HISTORY catch up.

Sean Bean: Waterloo is one of the most famous names in the history of battle

Quote
Sean Bean and the Napoleonic Wars are inextricably linked. The actor’s most celebrated character, which he played on ITV between 1993 and 2008, is Richard Sharpe, a fictional, dashing British soldier who devoted his military career to fighting Napoleon.

This makes the actor the perfect choice to present a new two-part documentary charting the details of the cataclysmic Battle of Waterloo, which transformed the face of history.

Sean Bean On Waterloo is being broadcast on History to mark the 200th anniversary of the epoch-making clash, one of Europe’s most brutal battles. In this epic conflict between the Duke of Wellington and his old enemy, Napoleon, nearly 50,000 soldiers were killed or wounded in one day on June 18, 1815.

“I have always been interested in the story of Waterloo, especially since I played the role of Richard, a British rifleman in the Napoleonic Wars. His adventures were based on real events that happened 200 years ago,” explains Sean.

The aim of the documentary, he continues, is to, “Find out more about the men who inspired that character – not the generals who led the battle, but the ordinary soldiers who fought it.”

Sean, 56, who has also gained an enormous global following thanks to lead roles in Game Of Thrones and Lord Of The Rings, emphasises the historical significance of the conflict.

“It was one of history’s bloodiest battles, a clash between two legendary generals. It only lasted a single day, but shaped the map of Europe for a century.

“Waterloo is one of the most famous names in the history of battle. I wanted to know what it was like to be there 200 years ago on the day history was made.”

In the course of this fascinating documentary, Sean draws on copious accounts of the battle given by the men who took part in it. He explains that we are especially well informed about this battle because, for the very first time in history, so many of the soldiers at Waterloo put their experiences down on paper.

“The battle was the first in history to be recorded in so much detail by so many soldiers. The eyewitnesses tell stories of incredible bravery. They reveal what it was like to be a soldier at Waterloo and make sense of the chaos of war. Their stories are my guide as I try to see the battle as they saw it,” says Sean.

As part of the documentary, we are treated to the vital memories of the British soldiers who manned the gun crews firing off three shots a minute and who fought an astonishingly courageous rear-guard action at the key location of Hougoumont Farm. We also get to witness the sheer power of the arms used.

During the making of the programme Sean tries his hand at firing a canon, weapons that Napoleon named his “beautiful daughters”. “This was a shock and awe tactic to demoralise the enemy before he sent in the cavalry and infantry to finish the job. One well-aimed shot could rip through a column of infantry and kill as many as 20 men,” he says.

Sean also gets to shoot a period musket, something he found unnerving. “I’ve shot a few replicas in my time. But to be surrounded by rifles that have actually been shot in anger and to think that maybe your life or someone else’s depended on it is quite scary,” Sean adds.

All in all, the actor found making this programme a rewarding process. “I’ve been able to step out of my ordinary life and learn a bit more. Even though this happened 200 years ago, it’s a story that needs to be remembered. The people were just like you and me.”

The trailers are on almost every ad. break on all three History channels here in the U.K. - he looks like he is having *the* best time ever!  I think he is clean shaven in some and not in others, and wearing the clothes in it that he was wearing when he looks so angry, when they came back from Yorkshire, so me thinks that's when they did the chunk in the Royal Armouries in Leeds.

So, two hours of the delicious Mr. Bean - I can't wait.  Not time spent on a red carpet being nervous or on a chat show - ditto - or being erudite in an interview about his work but far more like the real thing methinks.  An area of life that he is interested in and people who share his interest and his love of everything about that period, and, from what I've seen from the trailers, a real naturalness - *him* - so by next Monday we will be either so in love we can barely think straight or thinking "nah, maybe not" and putting our DVDs on eBay but I think the former is much more likely!

So looking forward to this!  :snoopy:

YORKSHIRE actor Sean Bean paid a visit to the Royal Armouries to film for a forthcoming documentary on the Battle of Waterloo.

Mr Bean was shown Napoleonic objects from the Royal Armouries collection and spoke to expert curators about the battle during his visit to Leeds.

The documentary, to mark the 200th anniversary of the battle, will also feature the actor witnessing the cavalry tactics used and firing a black-powder rifle of the type carried by soldiers in 1815.

One of his biggest roles was the eponymous hero Sharpe in the popular TV series based on novels set during the Napoleonic wars which concluded with Sharpe fighting at Waterloo.

Mr Bean said: “Ever since I’ve played Sharpe, I’ve been fascinated by the story of Waterloo, especially the ordinary soldiers. It’s been interesting; I’ve been able to step out of my ordinary life and just learn a bit more.

“Even though all this happened 200 years ago, I think it’s a story that needs to be remembered. The people were just like you and me.”

The documentary, Sean Bean on Waterloo, will be broadcast later this month on the History Channel.

The Royal Armouries will also be hosting a series of events to mark the bicentenary of one of the most significant moments in British military history.

And nothing on the regional tv news show about that either - what is it with these people?  Their job is to report what is happening or of interest in the region, all of it, and he is news, especially to Yorkshire.  The fact the filming of "T.F.C." was completely ignored was bad enough but he is a huge star, let alone at home! *tears hair out with frustration*

Love that green shirt - the perfect colour for me.  *idly wondering where he got it!*

There was a Battle of Waterloo memorial unveiled at Waterloo station today, a larger version of the campaign medal that all participants, regardless of rank, received, and, at Wellington Barracks, a bugle that was found by the side of a dead drummer boy was played again, for the first time in two hundred years - last played during the battle itself.  Astonishing, and how utterly distasteful that the French are trying to pretend that the battle didn't happen in quite the well recorded way it did to try and lessen their humiliation - tragic, and very small of them, they should be ashamed.

Why you need to watch Sean Bean on Waterloo

Quote
So many historical journeys begun with Bernard Cornwell’s bestselling Sharpe series, or else the ITV show of the same name, that despite its litany of historical sins there’s a great deal of delight to be gleaned from seeing Sean Bean familiarise himself with the real Battle of Waterloo in the History channel’s two-part documentary, starting Sunday 14 May at 10pm.

Weaving between the typical doc toolkit of re-enactments, first-hand accounts, battle maps and artefacts, Sean Bean on Waterloo isn’t shy about its secret weapon: Sean himself.

He’s not a natural presenter. Typically taciturn and low-key, he occasionally grunts or murmurs in response – no doubt to the dismay of the director. That, however, is part of his endearing everyman quality. His passion for the period he brought to life on screen is obvious and his easy charm effortlessly draws out the best in his diverse range of experts and interviewees, some of whom recount the tales of their ancestors at the battle.

Shuffling around in flatcap and his hands wedged deep in his jacket pockets like someone’s dad at a classic car rally, he grins benignly at muskets (greeting the Baker Rifle, the iconic firearm of Richard Sharpe’s green-clad 95th Rifles as an old friend) and chats blokeishly to soldiers, helpfully on loan from the British Army to shed light on Wellington’s tactics or tools.

Another great source of joy is drawn from the toys. The sheer volume of muskets stored at the Royal Armouries in Leeds means that Sean can have a go at firing one, or help load and fire a cannon. Vaguely reminiscent of the dubious malarkey of Deadliest Warrior, we even get to see a man on horseback demonstrate the cutting power of a cavalry sabre on a dead pig.

200 years on from 18 June 1815, when the events of that day couldn’t seem any more abstract, Sean Bean on Waterloo brings its modernity and its humanity to the fore.

Even the larking around with gunpowder and shot serves a purpose, seeding understanding of the the horrors, hardship and sheer hard graft faced by the lowly redcoats, hammered home by a arresting sequence where Sean tests out the tools of a battlefield amputation on a gristly dummy. At the other end of the chain of command, the anxiety felt by Wellington – who remarked darkly of the bloodshed that “nothing except a battle lost can be half so melancholy as a battle won” – is shared through the show’s blow-by-blow depiction of such a close-run engagement.

Suddenly those Regency-era tales of loss and heroism seem very raw, indeed.

Sean Bean on Waterloo episode one, premieres on Sunday 14th June 2015 at 10pm, only on HISTORY®.

Sean’s tribute to battle hero

Quote
A Blidworth mum whose ancestor fought in the Battle of Waterloo was interviewed by superstar Sean Bean for a TV documentary marking this week’s 200th anniversary of the conflict.

Christine Dabbs met the big screen heartthrob to talk about her great grandfather four times removed Matthew Clay who fought with distinction in the epic battle.

She said: “I couldn’t believe it when someone called me and said Sean wanted to talk to me about Matthew Clay.

“They said he had heard about his exploits and he wanted to interview me at the Royal Armouries for a documentary.

“Shaun was a really nice guy and we chatted for a couple of hours.

Battle of Waterloo 200th anniversary: Soldier slaked his thirst with blood of the slain

Quote
The 19-year-old, who had joined the 3rd Foot Guards (Scots Fusiliers) two years earlier, witnessed unimaginable horror at Quatre Bras, now in Belgium, on June 16, 1815, as Wellington’s army tried to halt Napoleon’s advance.

“We passed over numerous bodies of the slain,” he wrote. “I particularly noticed a young officer of the 33rd Regiment… his bright scarlet coat and silver lace attracted my attention when marching over his headless body.”

There was worse to come for him two days later at the blood-soaked Battle of Waterloo. His hand-written account has now been nationally recognised to mark the bicentenary.

And his great-great-great niece Christine Clay Dabbs, who lives in the village of Blidworth, Notts, where Matthew was born, will tell his story tonight in a documentary presented by Sean Bean.

Thanks for this, patch.  I watched it. Really only because of Sean being in it. While I like European history in general, I'm not keen on military history so I didn't find this as enthralling as say uh Lady Chatterley, but it was pretty good. :)

I liked the parts about Matthew Clay, the teenage soldier who wrote an account of his experiences. The story of him saving the little French drummer boy reminded me of  Sharpe's Waterloo where Hagman says something like "we've stopped eating little French drummer boys because they smell." I guess Cornwell had read about the story, too, and used it.  It was interesting to see the actual land, the farmhouse, the muskets, etc.

I watched it, mainly because this is part of history that I am lacking in, I'm not really interested in battles and such but I enjoyed it nevertheless ... I also enjoyed hearing about Matthew Clay and the story how he saved the drummer boy

Love the comment somebody gave to the Royal Armouries there:
"@Royal_Armouries I'm sure the sword is stunning but, sorry, that's not where my gaze is going to land when you post photos of #SeanBean"
Certainly not when he's wearing that sash with those tassels.
