Title: Wasted
Post by: patch on April 04, 2016, 04:37:07 AM
Cast announced for brand new Comedy Wasted

Quote
Danny Kirrane, Dylan Edwards, Gwyneth Keyworth and Rose Reynolds to front E4’s latest comedy series 'Wasted', which also stars Sean Bean.

Combine a gang of four twenty-something wasters, one West Country village and the ex-Lord of Winterfell and you’ve got Wasted. E4’s hilarious new comedy series, (6x30’), from triple BAFTA Award winning writing team James Lamont and Jon Foster (Cuckoo, Paddington, Amazing World of Gumball.)

Lovable fantasy fanatic Morpheus, (Danny Kirrane- Trollied), manages a bong shop, (Stoned Henge) with his neurotic sister Sarah (Rose Reynolds-The World’s End). His secret crush is their mate Alison (Gwyneth Keyworth- Game of Thrones), the quirky girl who runs a tattoo business out the back of the shop, and his cocky best friend Kent (Dylan Edwards-The Job Lot) sleeps on the sofa, rent free. Together they’ve been living in each other’s pockets since school and aren’t moving anywhere fast.

But Morpheus is a dreamer, and his dreams take the form of his hero Sean Bean (Game of Thrones), who appears in full medieval garb, as Morpheus' personal spirit guide, to help him navigate the rough seas of wasting your twenties.

Fun, facetious and jam-packed with surreal visual sequences, Wasted is a series about the stupid things you get up to when there's nothing much to do.

The 6x30’ comedy was ordered by Channel 4 Head of Comedy, Phil Clarke and Commissioning Editor for Comedy, Liz Lewin. Made by Angel Eye Media, the Executive Producers are John O’Callaghan and Richard Osborne. Produced by Phil Bowker (PhoneShop, Pulling) and Directed by Tom Marshall (Chewing Gum, Drifters).

Of the series Liz Lewin said, “We can’t wait to bring a bit of Westeros to Wiltshire with the Wasted gang’s adventures. Their exploits across the series are hilarious and ludicrous in equal measure – the perfect mix for an E4 audience”.

Filming is underway and Wasted is due to air on E4 this summer.

Game of Thrones hero Sean Bean is a fantasy geek's spirit guide in E4's new sitcom Wasted

Cuckoo writers get wackier with this weed-and-tattoo comedy

Game of Thrones hero Sean Bean has battled Bond and traversed the halls of King's Landing. His new gig? Spirit guide to a geek.

Bean will play a version of himself in the upcoming E4 comedy Wasted, from Cuckoo writers James Lamont and Jon Foster.

Wasted chronicles the exploits of Morpheus (Danny Kirrane), who is busy pining for tattoo shop owner Alison (Gwyneth Keyworth) when he's not running a bong shop with his neurotic sister Sarah (Rose Reynolds).

To help him get through the days, Morpheus envisions imaginary spirit guide Sean Bean advising him on important life decisions.

Game of Thrones’ Sean Bean plays it for laughs in Wasted as broadcaster unveils new season

Quote

The road between Westeros and Channel 4’s Horseferry Road headquarters is a well-travelled one. Sean Bean will play a thinly-veiled version of his Game of Thrones role, Ned Stark, in E4’s bong shop comedy, Wasted, while Kevin Eldon, who played a comedy Ned in the HBO series’ play within a TV show, will co-star in Jo Brand’s Channel 4 social worker sitcom, Damned

For Bean it is a rare venture into a comic role. For Channel 4, says its head of comedy Phil Clarke, it is quite a coup. “Sean Bean, in his Ned Stark, Game of Thrones persona, is the spirit guide to one of the characters and appears whenever he passes out,” says Clarke. “Sean was brilliant by all accounts, they couldn’t believe this big star would come and play a bit part in a small E4 comedy.”

Eldon, star of countless TV comedy shows, is adjusting to the higher profile the fantasy drama brings with it. “I saw him the other day, he said you can’t believe the attention you suddenly get even from doing a relatively small role in Game of Thrones. It’s massive.”

Exclusive: Missing Game of Thrones already? See Sean Bean play Ned Stark again - sort of - in E4's Wasted

Here's your first look at the upcoming comedy.

Quote
Check out this hilarious exclusive clip from E4's upcoming comedy Wasted.

Perfectly timed as we reach the finale of Game of Thrones tonight (June 27) in the UK, the preview of Wasted sees Sean Bean reprise his role as Ned Stark (sort of) to be a spirit guide to a geek.

Bean appear to Danny Kirrane's geek Morpheus, who tells him that he's getting a tattoo of a "1:5,000 scale map of Westeros".

His guide's first piece of advice is to be "more assertive": "You know, confident, like Paxman."

Written by Cuckoo's James Lamont and Jon Foster, Wasted chronicles the exploits of Morpheus, who is busy pining for tattoo shop owner Alison (Gwyneth Keyworth).

To help him through his days running a bong shop with his neurotic sister Sarah (Rose Reynolds), he envisions his spirit guide Sean Bean to advise him on important life decisions.

Wasted is coming to E4 in July.

Quote
You’ll be on our screens shortly in Wasted. Explain a little bit about who you play?

I think I’m a cross between the characters I play in Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones. I guess I’m a dream of Morpheus [the lead character], his hero, his spiritual guide, and I’m just trying to help him navigate through life and relationships. I keep appearing to him in the woods and in different places, and giving him advice.

How was this pitched to you, and what did you make of the idea?

I didn’t know what to think. My agent told me about it, and she said “You’d better read it, because I can’t really explain it! It’s bizarre!” And I was interested, and bemused. The idea of playing myself, a character called Sean Bean – although I’m not playing myself, I’m playing a character I’ve played before – it’s really odd. But then I read it, and I just thought “Oh wow, I want to do this, it’s right up my street.” It’s wonderful writing. Surreal and stupid and ludicrous. It’s absolutely hilarious, I really think it’s a cracker. We had such a good time on it, it was so much fun. It was only for a couple of days, but it was magical, to be working with Danny, and the director, Tom Marshall, and the writers James and Jon. And what I’ve seen is just hilarious; everyone is so good in it. I didn’t get a chance to meet the others, but it’s so well cast. I’m very excited by it.

Was it as much fun to film as it looks, and was it difficult to keep a straight face at times?

Yes, it was every bit as much fun as it looks. Especially working with Danny. We improvised and put things in there, there was quite a lot of ad-libbing as we went along. You always know you’re doing a good comedy when you’re filming and you get a feeling that you can’t help but laugh. You know you’re on the right track then. And that happened quite a lot.

You’re much more known for your dramatic work. Was it quite refreshing to be doing a comedy? Did it feel very different?

Yeah, it did feel different. It’s a lot more fun than killing people or getting killed. That can get a bit grim sometimes. It was good to get to do a bit of comedy. I had to play it straight, though. If you go looking for laughs, it’s not going to work. So the scenes with Danny I just played very straight. That’s why we started giggling now and again, because we were taking ourselves very seriously.

You’re so well known for those roles, and for Sharpe, when you’re dressed as a warrior. Then, finally, you get a call to appear in a contemporary comedy, and they put you in the exact same gear!

Laughs] I do do stuff where I dress in contemporary clothes as well! But I enjoy all of that. Immediately when you start to wear a costume, you start to create something, you put forward an image of yourself. I feel quite comfortable in that garb.
I didn’t know what was going to happen. I’d never played a role like this where I really didn’t know what to expect. Fortunately, it went well and it was very relaxed and easy-going. But everyone else was dressed normally, and I’m just this man in a wood with a big cape on.
The story is about four young adults getting wasted and not doing very much. Did you ever have a time in your life like that, or were you too busy actually working?

I think I probably did go through a period like that – I think that’s partly why I was laughing my head off at it last night. I can identify with it. I think everybody can identify with times where they don’t know where they’re going, or where their life’s heading. It’s all part of the process of growing up and finding out who you are and what you want to do in life. They’re quite shaky times, but very funny ones. The characters in this are all good people, but they’re almost playing a part. I think we all do that when we’re young, until we find out what we really are. In my case, I’m still playing parts! I’ve not grown up in that sense.

Interview with Jon Foster and James Lamont for Wasted

Quote
And there’s another aspect to the script, which is that Morpheus frequently turns to his spirit guide for advice. The spirit guide is Sean Bean. Why him?

James: We chose him from the very beginning, right from the first ideas for the script. It was always Sean Bean. We never wrote it with anyone else in mind. Whenever we thought about who we would use if we couldn’t get him, we could never find anyone else we wanted. It always had to be him.

Jon: We just thought “Who’s the most authoritative voice that Morpheus would listen to?” He would only listen to Sean Bean, in his Game of Thrones guise.

James: It’s a take on the idea of the alien who appears to you in the form you recognise the most. Who would Morpheus’ subconscious generate as a figure of absolute wisdom? Medieval Sean Bean!

Jon: Also it ties in with the whole rural, bucolic thing. You’d expect to find Sean Bean in a forest. It feels like the right place for him.

Were you confident of getting him?

James: We hoped. We never knew how it would go.

Jon: When he read the scripts, he really loved them. He then came along and filmed it, and really enjoyed it. He had a great time!

James: And was brilliant. And really, really funny. We knew we would be getting Sean Bean, but we didn’t realise how funny he’d be. Not just sending himself up, but ad-libbing and being a really strong comedy performer.

Jon: There was a wonderful moment, we were out filming, and a taxi drew up on set, and the door of the taxi opened, and out stepped Sean Bean for his first day of filming, complete with outfit and hair, smiling and holding a sword.

Interview with Dylan Edwards for Wasted

Quote
You recently appeared in an episode of Game of Thrones - would you have liked to have worked with Sean Bean on Wasted?

I was so jealous of Danny and I keep pitching ideas to the writers Jon and James about Kent doing a scene with Sean Bean. I keep coming up with new ways that I could be in the scenes with him, there's so many different ideas so I'm hopeful! Either that or I get my own spirit guide. I think we decided that Kent's would be Bruce Grobbelaar, an old goalkeeper from the eighties and Kent wouldn’t even know who he is! So he's like ‘ah great I don't even know this guy and you get Sean Bean!.

What attracted you to the role?

I watched Chewing Gum so I was a fan of the directors (Tom Marshall) work and I liked the style of that. When it was pitched it was described to be a bit like Spaced and I’m a big fan of Spaced and then Sean Bean came into the mix and I thought “wow! This is mad!”

Interview with Danny Kirrane for Wasted

Quote
There’s one aspect of the show we’ve not really touched on yet – Morpheus’ spirit guide. Explain a bit about him.

Morpheus is massively into the fantasy world, and he loves game of Thrones. During the series, he is visited, spiritually, by Sean Bean, in fantasy medieval garb. They go on a journey throughout the series, so at the beginning, Morpheus is completely in awe of Sean bean, and by the end, that relationship has moved on somewhat. He gives me advice about women, and about being less of a geek, basically.

How was it working with him?

It was amazing! It was really hard not to laugh. He’s someone who I’ve watched since I was a kid – I remember my mum watched Sharpe, she used to love him. She had a massive crush on him. Also, being from Yorkshire as well, I’ve always had a soft spot for him. It was great playing opposite him, he was so funny. He improvised around it, and made it even better than it was on the page. Those scenes were quite easy, because my character is basically in awe of him 90 per cent of the time. He dragged me through those scenes, I just had to react to him.

Sean Bean returns to his Game of Thrones roots as Ned Stark in new E4 comedy

New series Wasted will see the actor play himself as a mysterious spirit guide, as you can see in this exclusive new clip

(http://i927.photobucket.com/albums/ad116/patchfolk/Sean%20Bean/sean%20bean%203/wasted/Sean_Bean_returns_to_his_Game_of_Thrones_roots_as_Ned_Stark_in_new_E4_comedy_zpscn1l8zpj.jpg) (http://s927.photobucket.com/user/patchfolk/media/Sean%20Bean/sean%20bean%203/wasted/Sean_Bean_returns_to_his_Game_of_Thrones_roots_as_Ned_Stark_in_new_E4_comedy_zpscn1l8zpj.jpg.html)

Quote
Now here’s a funny one. A new E4 comedy called Wasted based around a set of young provincial slackers is coming at the end of the month, and it has a surprise additional cast member – veteran actor Sean Bean, who plays himself as a kind of spirit guide who appears when young drifter Morpheus (Danny Kirrane) is in need.
And in a nice boost for Game of Thrones fans, this version of Sean Bean is more or less a riff on his most famous recent role as noble patriarch Ned Stark, complete with fur cloak, sword and (almost) iconic catchphrases, as this new RadioTimes.com exclusive clip from the series can attest.

Speaking about the series, Bean said: "I think I'm a cross between the characters I play in Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones. I guess I'm a dream of Morpheus, his hero, his spiritual guide, and I'm just trying to help him navigate through life and relationships."
The series also stars Gwyneth Keyworth (who has actually appeared in Game of Thrones herself), Rose Reynolds and Dylan Edwards (all below) and is written by James Lamont and Jon Foster.

Game of Thrones gets stoned as Sean Bean satirises fantasy role in new E4 sitcom Wasted

The comedy series pits the former Lord of Winterfell against a gang of GoT-obsessed wasters from a bong shop

(http://i927.photobucket.com/albums/ad116/patchfolk/Sean%20Bean/sean%20bean%203/wasted/Wasted_zpshsz81vxu.jpg) (http://s927.photobucket.com/user/patchfolk/media/Sean%20Bean/sean%20bean%203/wasted/Wasted_zpshsz81vxu.jpg.html)

Quote
What do you get if you combine a gang of wasters and the ex-Lord of Winterfell in one sleepy West Country village?

E4’s new comedy series Wasted, that’s what.

Fantasy fan Morpheus (Danny Kirrane) runs a bong shop with his sister and has a secret crush on the girl who does the tattoos out the back.

He also has a fertile imagination and Game of Thrones star Sean Bean is his all-time hero.

When the pair meet in the opening episode, Morpheus can’t believe his luck.

 “Sean Bean?” he whispers.

“No, not Sean Bean ,” says Sean.

“I’m your subconscious mind manifesting itself into the form you trust the most.”

Right.

Sean reckons it’s good fun.

“I watched the first two episodes last night," he said.

"I was sitting on my own on the settee just laughing my head off. Just belly laughing.”

Check it out on Tuesday, E4, 10pm.

(http://i927.photobucket.com/albums/ad116/patchfolk/Sean%20Bean/sean%20bean%203/wasted/JS94782928_zpsj5vpenbh.jpg) (http://s927.photobucket.com/user/patchfolk/media/Sean%20Bean/sean%20bean%203/wasted/JS94782928_zpsj5vpenbh.jpg.html)

Quote

MORPHEUS is a 25-year-old virgin living in a village in the west country. He runs a shop called Stoned Henge, selling the kind of things your mother warned you about (there is even a tattoo parlour in the back).

It will come as no surprise that the well-upholstered geek adores Lord of the Rings and lives for Game of Thrones.

But writers Jon Foster and James Lamont, who created Morpheus for the new E4 series Wasted, have played a masterstroke. They have given him a spirit guide in the shape of Sean Bean.

This is a character called Sean Bean, a hybrid of his Lord of the Rings character Boromir and Game of Thrones’ Ned Stark. Both are serious, moral compass good guys in fur capes and leather armour. Exactly the kind of chap a lonely shopkeeper would ask for life lessons.

And to everybody’s joy, the real Sean Bean has agreed to play the part. Sword, robes, straggly hair and all.

James said: “We chose him from the very beginning, right from the first ideas for the script. It was always Sean Bean. We never wrote it with anyone else in mind. It had
 to be him.

When he first heard about the script, Sean had his doubts.

The actor said: “I didn’t know what to think. My agent said I had better read it because she couldn’t really explain it.

“I was interested and bemused. I’m playing a character called Sean Bean – although I’m not playing myself, I’m playing a character I’ve played before. That’s really odd. But then I read it, and I just thought, ‘Oh wow, I want to do this, it’s right up my street’.”

It was the quality of the script that knocked his mud-encrusted linen foot wraps off.

Sean said: “It’s wonderful writing: surreal and stupid and ludicrous.”

Wasted begins with a double bill on E4, Tuesday, at 10pm.

E4's Wasted brings you Game of Thrones' Sean Bean as you've never seen him before

Danny Kirrane admits he struggled not to laugh working opposite the Ned Stark.

(http://i927.photobucket.com/albums/ad116/patchfolk/Sean%20Bean/sean%20bean%203/wasted/cdf93bda-8093-48bc-9b20-85e813264e4e_zpsqawzrdum.jpg) (http://s927.photobucket.com/user/patchfolk/media/Sean%20Bean/sean%20bean%203/wasted/cdf93bda-8093-48bc-9b20-85e813264e4e_zpsqawzrdum.jpg.html)

Quote
E4's new sitcom Wasted is about the stupid things that four friends get up to in the West Country when there's nothing to do.

It also features Sean Bean - yes, the Sean Bean - as the spirit guide to our geeky lead Morpheus (Danny Kirrane).

Bean pokes fun at his Game of Thrones role as Ned Stark, at his gruff Northern persona... at practically his entire career.

But when his co-star Kirrane first read the scripts for Wasted, he had no idea that he'd be performing opposite the real deal.

"It said 'Sean Bean' and I was a bit confused by it," he admitted. "I thought it meant a stand-in... and then having spoken to the writers, they were like, 'No, it's actually Sean Bean' - I was like, 'What, really?

Kirrane described Bean as "a great sport" who "really went for it" in his scenes - with the actor appearing to Morpheus in visions.
"He even improvised. I found it really hard not to laugh when I did any of the bits with Sean. I don't think I've seen him in anything else like this - but he took to it like a duck to water."

Of course, Bean is notorious for his long, long list of on-screen deaths - but surely an imaginary spirit guide can't die?

"You'll have to wait and see," laughed Kirrane. "That's all I'm saying!"

Wasted begins tomorrow night (Tuesday, July 26) with a double-bill at 10pm on E4.

Danny Kirrane interview
Danny Kirrane talks to BCG about acting alongside Sean Bean in Wasted...
Quote
Sean Bean plays your spirit guide. Were the other cast members jealous?

They were actually, yeah. When it went around that he was going to be in it - and this was before we got the scripts - I think we all thought he was just going to be sat in a pub with us. So they were a bit annoyed [that he wasn't]... but it really works.

I've seen a couple of the episodes and he is so brilliant. He was so fun to work with. He told me he read the scripts in the bath and loved them, and that's why he did it. I found that a really funny image: Ned Stark in the bath!

He looks like he is a serious chap?

Oh, not at all. He was up for a laugh. He was really funny improvising around it. He's quite chilled, and a joy to work with. Such a lovely guy.

So you'd be up for filming a second series?

I definitely think there's more mileage in the show, yeah. It's one of those things with a second series... as an actor you say "oh I'd love another go", but it depends what the reaction is and if people watch it.

I really enjoyed watching the bits I've seen, and I'd watch it, so yeah I'd love to do it again.

Dylan Edwards interview
Quote
So back to Wasted. Did you get to meet Sean Bean, who features as the spirit guide for the character Morpheus?

We were kept well away from the set... I was trying to wrangle my way in!

I keep trying to pitch to the writers that, if they do a Series 2, Kent has got to get in with Sean Bean some how. We've got to engineer it that Kent and Sean Bean are in the same room, because I was well gutted!

We got to see all the clips, and Danny was telling us all about it, and now I've seen some of the Sean Bean moments they are just brilliant. It's so cool of him to come on board and be so humble and fun and up for sending himself up like he does.

Gwyneth Keyworth interview
Gwyneth Keyworth admits to BCG that she's had a crush on Sean Bean's Sharpe character for years.
Quote
So you'd be up for making more?

Oh, yeah, definitely. You don't turn down that much fun!

Did you get to meet Sean Bean?

Only Danny did, and I was really heartbroken about it, as I was a big Sharpe fan.

Sharpe was my first ever crush so I was heartbroken when I didn't get to meet Sean Bean. In fact, I tried to convince the runners to sneak me on set but everyone was like "Gwyneth, get a grip of yourself!" To be fair, I probably should, as I'd only weird him out by saying "I've had a crush on you since I was 6!"

Rose Reynolds interview
Quote
Did you get to meet Sean Bean?

I didn't. He was wrapped [finished filming] in about four days, and all of his scenes were with Danny, so I didn't meet him... but I had daily updates from Danny, with some WhatsApp pictures. They're both Northern lads, and Danny was just saying what a great guy he was. I think their working relationship was a lot of fun by all accounts.

Wasted: Danny Kirrane reveals what it was like working alongside Sean Bean on the new Channel Four series
The actor tells The Independent how he bonded with Bean over his Yorkshire roots

Quote
What was it like working with Sean Bean?

It was wicked. He was so brilliant and hilarious. Just in the flesh doing those lines playing himself, kind of taking the piss out of himself. We were laughing a lot. He’s just so chilled and because I’m from Yorkshire originally, I feel like I’ve known him years.

I remember my mum watching Sharpe. She still calls him Sharpe. She’s like ‘what was it like with Sharpe? Can I meet Sharpe?’ and I’m like ‘No he’s not called Sharpe and you’re not meeting him’. I felt like I knew him and his voice sounds like my dad.

Watch Sean Bean Recreate His 'Game Of Thrones' Persona In E4's 'Wasted'

Quote
Brand new E4 show Wasted – one of the year’s finest comedies – began with two back-to-back episodes last night. And while its makers may have been hoping watercooler discussion centred on the show's neat bringing-up-to-date of Spaced's late-1990s surrealism, you can't ignore the fact that the limelight was stolen by Ned bloody Stark!

Yes, he may have been (SPOILER ALERT) prematurely executed early on in the Game of Thrones, but in E4's slacker comedy, Sean Bean (who played Stark) appears as a cloaked – and thinly veiled – spirit guide for the hapless character Morpheus, and by all accounts he's totally owning the show.

One scene sees Bean giving Morpheus some tough love and a gruff ‘wake-up call’ with a slap, while another particular brilliant moment showcasing Bean's comedic chops as he refuses to be coaxed into completing his characters' immortal ‘Winter Is Coming’ line. Speaking to Digital Spy, Kirrane praised Bean for his witty off-the-cuff quips. "He even improvised. I found it really hard not to laugh when I did any of the bits with Sean. I don't think I've seen him in anything else like this - but he took to it like a duck to water."

Fans have been undoubtedly won over by the actor's deadpan delivery and sharp backchat.

The gastropub, in The Hill, was carefully selected by both broadcasters as an ideal location for their shows, especially for Wasted, where the pub, which had to have its name changed to the Sheep and Onion for copyright reasons, featured heavily.

The Wasted crew said they were bound to get a second series as they thought the show was very good and therefore come back here which would be brilliant.

Sean Bean is brilliantly foul-mouthed in episode 3 of E4's Wasted

There were tweets from (I think) the costume person, who said it was "wrapped." Doesn't that mean the film is totally finished? I don't really know much about how films are made. Earlier articles made it sound like they would do it all in 5 weeks in Yorkshire.

Check out Talk TV’s exclusive clip from the final episode of E4 20-something comedy Wasted.…

If you haven’t already got stuck into the tongue-in-cheek series, you’ve missed a treat.

Veteran actor Sean Bean plays himself, but in the role of a spirit guide who appears when young West Country slacker Morpheus is in need.

Game of Thrones fans will probably appreciate that this version of Sean is pretty much a riff on his recent role as noble patriarch Ned Stark.

Here he is, larking around with a sword in the opening scenes, and ribbing Morpheus (Danny Kirrane) about not having lost his virginity.

Catch the final instalment, written by Cuckoo’s James Lamont and Jon Foster, on Tuesday night at 10pm.

In it, Morpheus’ flatmate Angela invites him to a sex party. Enough said…

They do seem have used up most of the gags, though. Last episode was brilliant and how they could top that, I don't know.

For US TV shows, it's easy to search and find ratings.... I don't see that sort of thing for UK shows? Anybody know where to find that information?

very low-brow british comedy, 4 20-somethings drinking and doing drugs to get through the day. For mindless comedy, it's actually quite hilarious.

Plus Sean Bean is in it, as Sean Bean dressed as Ned Stark - playing the spirit guide of one of the characters

It's not ground breaking TV, but if you're into that type of comedy, it's worth a watch

Cult Corner: ‘Wasted’ Is A Stoner Comedy With A Delightful ‘Game Of Thrones’ Twist

Quote
When we talk about streaming culture, we’re usually enthusing about what’s new, but one of the best things about streaming is how it’s made old and obscure cult hits available to a new generation. Presenting Cult Corner: your weekly look into hidden gems and long-lost curiosities that you can find on streaming.

What if you were the type of person who got high quite a lot? And every time you got high, you met your spirit guide? And your spirit guide was none other than Game of Thrones actor Sean Bean? That’s the reality Wasted proposes, and it’s an equally insane and fun one.

Much like every other stoner comedy, Wasted has a fairly straightforward premise. The series follows a group of friends and pot enthusiasts as they embark on adventure after adventure. Most of those adventures involve trying to score pot as you may imagine. But, between Ned Stark’s (Sean Bean) presence and this particular group of bumbling besties, there’s a sweetly nerdy tone to Wasted. The British comedy plays with the hard lines that were drawn in high school. You can be nerdy and high, cool and high, confident and high, insecure and high, and everything in between.
For all of Wasted’s oddities, and there are many, there’s something wonderfully meta about this stoner comedy. The idea that a spirit guide would appear not as an animal or historical figure but as a Game of Thrones actor who knows he’s in character seems like a plausible psychedelic trip in 2017. Also, the series is packed with casually nerdy references that never feel too winking or heavy-handed. At one point when all of his friends refuse to watch him host a game night in a pub, the series’ protagonist Morpheus — a seeminlgy clear nod to The Matrix — yells back, “You’re all just a bunch of Lando Calrissians.” That’s a very silly line, but it weirdly works in this quirky show.

Wasted is certainly not for everyone, and it has its faults. If characters aren’t white, heteronormative 20-somethings, there’s not really a role for them. Likewise, if you hate stoner comedies, you’re going to hate this. However, if lighting up on-screen is your jam, you’re probably going to like how Wasted puts a fun, modern twist on familiar genre.

UK comedy Wasted will premiere next month on Syfy.

The series, which has been likened to Spaced Out, surrounds a series of old school friends getting stoned or drunk and includes an appearance by Sean Bean.

This premiered in the UK a year ago. There are 6 episodes all up.

This surreal slacker comedy set in West country village of Neston Berry, sees the return of Kent, after he fails to make it as a DJ, where he reunites with his school friends, Morpheus, Sarah and Alison.

They reside at ‘Stoned Henge’ a souvenir shop/tattoo parlour and have various aimless low-key adventures while trying to stave off boredom, which mostly involve getting drunk or smoking cannabis.

The twenty-something friends lives are changed forever by the appearance of Sean Bean, who plays Morpheus’ imaginary spirit guide, dressed as his role from Game of Thrones.

Wasted on Lightbox (New Zealand).

Ned Stark is alive and well and trapped in a British stoner comedy

Imagine discovering your subconscious mind can manifest itself into the form it trusts the most. It’s an alarming thought, mostly because mine would reveal itself as an electrifying mix of Suzy Cato and Astar from Good Morning. Thankfully for Morpheus, loveable character of surreal comedy Wasted, it’s a more appealing imaginary vision: it’s Sean flipping Bean.
