It’s Official: Apple Has Picked Up Rights To Cartoon Saloon’s ‘Wolfwalkers’
Quote
It’s official: Apple’s soon-to-launch video service has acquired the rights to Tomm Moore and Cartoon Saloon’s next film Wolfwalkers. The news was confirmed by Deadline on Saturday evening, but Bloomberg first reported the negotiations between Apple and Cartoon Saloon last June.

Moore, who has directed the Oscar-nominated films The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea, will co-direct the film with longtime collaborator Ross Stewart, who was the art director of The Secret of Kells, and co-directed with Moore the Cartoon Saloon sequence in the anthology feature The Prophet. “Since we came up with the idea many years ago it felt natural that we would co-direct this film together,” Moore told Cartoon Brew

Apple buys animated film from Kilkenny-based Cartoon Saloon
Quote
Bloomberg reported in June that Apple was in negotiations with the Kilkenny-based company over the film, which will reportedly star Sean Bean. Cartoon Studio founder Thom Moore confirmed a deal had been agreed in a tweet sent on Monday.

According to IMDB, Wolfwalkers, which is scheduled for release in either 2020 or 2021, tells the story of a young apprentice hunter called Robyn who comes to Ireland with her father to wipe out the last pack of wolves. However, her life changes though after she saves a native girl, Mebh, which leads to her discovery of the Wolfwalkers and transforms her into the very thing her father is tasked to destroy.

One of the most anticipated sessions at Annecy Festival Online this week was the “Work in Progress” look at Cartoon Saloon’s upcoming fall movie Wolfwalkers. Directors Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart and art director Maria Pareja offered a rich collection of character designs, art, animatics and excerpts from the beautifully crafted 2D feature while discussing some of their inspirations, research work and artistic goals for the movie.

The extensively researched film, which will be released by Apple TV+ later this fall, is set in Ireland in the mid-17th century. It tells the story of Robyn, a young English apprentice hunter who comes to Ireland with her father to wipe out the last pack of wolves in the country. Her life changes after she saves a native girl named Mebh, who leads her to the discovery of the wolfwalkers and her transformation into the very thing her father (voiced by Sean Bean) is tasked to destroy.

I thought this was going to be a project like Snow Queen (I'm not saying it was bad).

But, I didn't realize the prestige behind this animation studio. I'm very intrigued and excited for this, however, I hope that it will get a theatrical and a physical media release... I am so sick of subscription only.

“Because it had been the capital of the Catholic Confederacy, Cromwell’s aim was to crush Kilkenny,” Moore tells Empire in the new issue. “And he did a good job of it!” If that’s the context, the tale itself is one of shape-shifting wolves, the connection between a wild Irish girl and the English hunter girl who stumbles upon her, whose hunter father Bill who is not only voiced by Sean Bean, but visually modelled after him too. “We drew the dad to look like Sean Bean from his Sharpe era,” Moore tells Empire. “He just looks a bit like a dad to me! We were really delighted when he agreed to do the voice.”

Apple TV+ Drops Teaser Trailer for Tomm Moore’s ‘Wolfwalkers’
Quote
The world will soon again feast on the sumptuous 2D animated mastery of two-time Oscar-nominated director Tomm Moore when his new Apple Original Film, Wolfwalkers, debuts in theatres and Apple TV+ later this year. For now, we only have this teaser trailer; folks taking part in the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival, however, will get access to the film’s North American premiere.

Wolfwalkers, directed by Moore (Song of the Sea, The Secret of Kells) and Ross Stewart (The Secret of Kells), is set in a time of superstition and magic, and tells the story of a young apprentice hunter, Robyn Goodfellowe, who journeys to Ireland with her father to wipe out the last wolf pack. While exploring the forbidden lands outside the city walls, Robyn befriends a free-spirited girl, Mebh, a member of a mysterious tribe rumored to have the ability to transform into wolves by night. As they search for Mebh’s missing mother, Robyn uncovers a secret that draws her further into the enchanted world of the Wolfwalkers and risks turning into the very thing her father is tasked to destroy.
Wolfwalkers stars Honor Kneafsey, Eva Whitaker, Sean Bean, Simon McBurney, Tommy Tiernan, Jon Kenny, John Morton, and Maria Doyle Kennedy. It’s produced by Paul Young, Nora Twomey, Tomm Moore and Stéphan Roelants, from a screenplay by Will Collins. The film is co-produced by the award-winning animation studios Cartoon Saloon (Oscar and Golden Globe nominee, The Breadwinner) and Melusine Productions (Oscar nominee Ernest & Celestine); it will stream globally on Apple TV+ following its theatrical run.

Wolfwalkers at 45th Toronto International Film Festival

Quote
The Oscar-nominated animation studio behind The Secret of the Kells returns with the tale of a magical, unlikely friendship between two girls in 17th-century Ireland.
The Oscar-nominated animation studio behind the TIFF selections The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, and The Breadwinner returns with the tale of an unlikely — and magical — friendship between two girls in 17th-century Ireland.

Wolfwalkers opens during Oliver Cromwell’s brutal colonization of Ireland, in the county of Kilkenny, which has fallen to English settlers after a bloody siege. On Cromwell’s orders, a young apprentice hunter, Robyn Goodfellowe (voiced by Honor Kneafsey), and her father, Bill (Game of Thrones’ Sean Bean), are sent from England to track and kill the last of the wolves that live in woods outside the city walls. Adventurous and rebellious, Robyn sneaks into the woods and discovers a world unlike any she’s ever known. There she meets Mebh (Eva Whittaker), a wild girl who was raised by wolves, and through her unique new friend begins to realize it’s not the forest that should be feared, but the “townies.” But, as she grows closer to the forest world, her relationship with her father is put to the test, as Robyn herself becomes one of the very things he is ordered to obliterate.

The final instalment in directors Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart’s “Irish folklore trilogy” is a stunning testament to their singular animation style and storytelling skills. With visual references to pre-Celtic imagery and Studio Ghibli alike — and some catchy songs — Wolfwalkers is an instant classic for all ages.

This film is eligible for the People's Choice Award. Vote for your favourite films at tiff.net/vote.

TIFF 2020: How Hand-Crafted Animation Turned ‘Wolfwalkers’ into an Irish Folklore Tour de Force
Quote
With “Wolfwalkers,” Cartoon Saloon has achieved a hand-animated tour de force in completing its Irish folklore trilogy, led by Oscar-nominated director Tomm Moore (“Song of the Sea,” “The Secret of Kells”) and art director-turned director Ross Stewart. The mystical adventure about two young girls saving the hunted wolf population of Kilkenny (home of Cartoon Saloon) in the mid-17th century offers a compelling story about female empowerment and animal rights, told with a bold visual aesthetic. The Oscar contender from Apple makes its North American premiere at TIFF this Saturday followed by a theatrical run by GKids and streaming on Apple TV+ later this year.

Moore had great ambitions and twice the budget on “Wolfwalkers,” and he entrusted more responsibility to Stewart after his enormous visual contributions to “Song of the Sea” and “The Secret of Kells.” This was important in designing the two contrasting worlds of the town (rigid line work) and forest (warm curves), which carried over into the character designs as well. Whereas Robyn, Mebh, and the wolves are drawn as round and loose, Robyn’s father and the rest of the townspeople are more solid and square.

Cartoon Saloon to home-premiere Wolfwalkers at Kilkenny Animated
Quote
Local audiences will get their first chance to see the exciting new Cartoon Saloon film next month during the Kilkenny Animated festival.

Wolfwalkers had it’s world premiere to huge critical acclaim over the weekend as part of the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival.

The annual festival of local & global animation is hosted every year by the four-time Oscar-nominated local studio.

This year it’s on from from October 2nd to 4th as Co-director Tom Moore outlines “Our home town premiere’s going to be a screening & it’ll be in stages, only 50 people at a time can go in, but we’re going to be screening it non-stop for a couple of days over the festival so hopefully people will get a chance to see it then ahead of the release on the 13 of October but it’ll be in the cinemas from 30 October right through the month of November so I’m hoping that everyone will get a chance to get out and get off their couch & go see it in the cinema and in a cinema experience”.

Co-Director Ross Stewart says “The only kindof feedback that we could see was from like a live feed on Twitter, people sharing their opinions on it but thankfully everyone has, well nearly everyone, has very positive reviews but yeah it is a shame to not have a premiere in a big building where you can guage the audiences response in live time they laugh at the jokes or cry at the sad parts”.

Ross adds that the star-studded cast also includes loads of Kilkenny locals noting “For the actual cast itself because we had a few stars like Sean Bean in there we wanted to get in, for the Kilkenny people, we wanted to get real people who lived in Kilkenny with the proper accent and that so all of the crowds and all of the kids, all of the the tertiary or secondary characters, they’re all Kilkenny people or people that have a good Kilkenny accent so it’s authentic that way”.

I think I may figured out a major twist for the Wolfwalkers movie based on the trailer. I think the Sean Bean dad in the movie is also a wolfwalker, as he and the big grey-black wolf  defending the Robyn girl (as a wolf) at the end both have same eye color (and a similar brow?).

Wolfwalkers' directors on difficulty of hiring British actors to play British villains in Irish movies
Quote
The new Irish movie is a huge Oscar favourite, and will be one of the first movies to be shown in cinemas when the Level 5 restrictions are lifted.

Let us not beat around the bush here, Wolfwalkers is probably going to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature at the 2021 Academy Awards.

Sure, it is going up against Pixar and Disney, but we feel good about the gifted storytellers at Kilkenny-based Cartoon Saloon and their chances of winning.

Before we get into the interview, you should know that Wolfwalkers is due for general release in Irish cinemas from Friday, December 4, with advance screenings from Wednesday, December 2.

Sean Bean discusses Wolfwalkers, one of the year's best animated films

(https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/ad116/patchfolk/image.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds) (https://app.photobucket.com/u/patchfolk/p/666fe0ce-e9a0-4405-bebd-8434a5f7bf99)
Quote
Sean Bean stars in a medieval-set fantasy playing a strong father who tries to protect his rebellious teen daughter while struggling to fulfill his duty to a corrupt leader – oh, and there are wolves involved.

While the setup might remind Game of Thrones fans of Ned Stark, everything else about the actor's new Apple TV+ animated film Wolfwalkers takes a very different path: The tale is set in 1650 Ireland and Bean voices Bill Goodfellowe, an English hunter ordered by the land's imperious Lord Protector (Simon McBurney) to exterminate wolves so woodcutters can clear a forest. Bill's crossbow-wielding daughter Robyn (Honor Kneafsey), feeling confined by a protected life in their village, ventures into the forbidden forest where she meets a mysterious girl (Eva Whittaker) with the power to communicate with wolves, setting events into motion that lead to an epic clash.

Some critics have declared the hand-drawn film, from directors Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart, the best animated movie of the year while EW's Christian Holub noted the production "has extra resonance in the time of plague."

In the exclusive interview below, Bean discusses his voiceover role, the GoT comparison, and the film's message.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What initially excited you about this project?

SEAN BEAN: Well, I like animation. I used to love it as a kid. The original feature film Snow White – I saw that in the cinema, things like that. I was quite good at drawing myself as a kid, so I always had an interest in it. I quite like doing the voices for the faces – you've got a bit more freedom to create the character as you're going along.

I think some Thrones fans will get a kick out of Wolfwalkers because it's tough – at least at first – to not think about Ned and Arya with the relationship between Bill and Robyn.

I suppose there's a tendency when something is set during this period of time to think about slipping back into Ned Stark or Boromir. But the guy I play is quite a humble man, he's quite sensitive, and he's just an ordinary man following orders and doing what he's told to do. It's not until he sees another world through Robyn's eyes that he realizes the world isn't what he's told it was.

Speaking of Snow White, the hand-drawn style of the film is gorgeous, and a bit refreshing from the sleek CG animated style that we've grown accustomed to.

Yeah, isn't it? There's so much more realism with CGI, it's very clean now and we take that for granted. When something comes from someone with a pen or pencil, drawing pictures, one after the other, to create a whole film, it's brilliant. It's so unusual to see that these days.

There's also a level of – I don't want to say "darkness," because Wolfwalkers really is a family film – but there are some edgy moments in there that you would expect would get crossed out of the script if it was made at a major Hollywood studio nowadays for a summer release.

You feel like it genuinely means something, that there's a good story to be told that it still maintains its Irish roots and mythology and it was done by people who really felt they needed to tell a story that they felt very strongly and passionately about, rather than thinking about it as a commercial venture and having their hands tied by a studio. When I went to Ireland to [record] it, it was in a big old country house with animals running around. It felt like being at a friend's house and they would say, "let's just try this or try that." It was very informal. It brought a more earthy realism to it.

There's a certain amount of environmental theme there in terms of humans pushing into the wilderness. But what do you think is important for viewers to take away from the film?

I think it's important to remember that there are these stories that are made in mythology and are part of a [culture's] heritage. Wolves have kind of a bad reputation but are very free creatures who can teach Robyn a lot. It tells me that we shouldn't lose that wildness, that spontaneity, in our great search for new ideas amid lives that we lead that are often quite structured toward not finding those magical moments. Like I have a garden that attracts a lot of wildlife and I love being out there with the smells of the leaves and the plants and trees and the water. How I feel when I go out into my garden is probably how Robyn feels when she goes into the forest and finds the wolves. But it's the kind of thing I feel we need to hold onto and explore more of instead of being stuck in offices and in rooms with computers and listening to mainstream media. I think it's important that we go out and find out things for ourselves, and that should be encouraged in all walks of life

'Wolfwalkers' beats 'Soul' in LAFCA Awards
Quote
The Irish animation 'Wolfwalkers' has won Best Animated Feature at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. LAFCA is one of the most important critics groups of awards season.
'Wolfwalkers' is directed by Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart and is the latest from Cartoon Saloon. The studio previously produced 'Song of the Sea', 'The Secret of Kells' and 'The Breadwinner'.

The feature beat Disney Pixar movie 'Soul' for the top prize. This makes the Irish movie's prospects at the Oscars all the more hopeful.

The movie has been getting stellar reviews across the globe following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last September.

It also won Best Animated Feature at the New York and Boston Film Critics Circle Awards.

It is showing in cinemas and on Apple TV+ now.

‘Wolfwalkers’ Directors Talk Inspirations Behind Their Most Ambitious Film To Date & The “Epic” Animated Series Cartoon Saloon Is Crafting For Apple TV+
Quote
With Wolfwalkers, directors Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart looked to enter uncharted creative territory, while closing out an acclaimed ‘Irish Folklore Trilogy’ that kicked off over a decade ago.

Produced by small-but-mighty, Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon, Moore’s previous features, The Secret of Kells (2009) and Song of the Sea (2014), each earned Oscar nominations. But it’s with Wolfwalkers that he appears to be on the cusp of a breakthrough win.

Marking his longtime collaborator Stewart’s directorial debut, the film distributed by Apple TV+ and GKIDS is set in 1650, in the medieval, Irish town of Kilkenny. Its protagonist, Robyn, is an apprentice hunter, who journeys with her father from England to help take out a pack of wolves. Long confined by the Puritanical society in which she’s been raised, the girl experiences true freedom for the first time only when she befriends Mebh, a girl from a mysterious tribe, which is said to transform into a pack of wolves by night.

Featuring the voices of Honor Kneafsey, Eva Whittaker, Simon McBurney, Sean Bean, Maria Doyle Kennedy and more, the Golden Globe-nominated pic has been named Best Animated Feature by both the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the New York Film Critics Circle, also claiming AFI Fest’s Audience Award for Narrative Feature.

Below, Moore and Stewart reflect on the atmosphere of “polarization” that informed their story and the “unscratched” creative itches that Wolfwalkers allowed them to explore. Explaining why the film was their most ambitious undertaking to date, they also touch on exciting projects currently in the works at Cartoon Saloon, including the Netflix feature My Father’s Dragon and an “epic” animated series for Apple TV+.

“The heart of the movie became these two little girls, representing two different views of femininity and attitudes towards females in that time period,” Wolfwalkers co-director and producer Tomm Moore said of the characters of Robyn Goodfellowe and Mebh Óg MacTíre in the Apple TV+ Oscar-nominated animated film. “I think it has a lot of resonance for little girls today — I hope so anyway.”

Moore’s comments came during Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees awards-season virtual event, where he was joined by co-director Ross Stewart and producer Nora Twoney.

Nominated this year for Best Animated Feature and with voice-overs from the likes of Sean Bean and Simon McBurney, Apple Original Films’ Wolfwalkers debuted at the 2020 Toronto Film Festival and premiered on the streaming service December 11. Mixing real history based on the 17th century reign of English Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell, some fantasy, those strong female leads and some amazing aesthetics, the hand-drawn animation is that rare beast that spans the ages and the generations, in more ways than one.

And it has been able to find an even greater audience thanks to its presence on Apple TV+.

“We’re an independent studio and we’ve always had difficulty making sure that our films are seen,” said Twoney of the advantage of Wolfwalkers being on Apple’s streaming platform. “You know, we’re good at making films, but getting them seen is a whole different thing. So, it’s been incredible the exposure we’ve gotten with this film because of Apple; [it] has been absolutely transformative for us.”

This is actually the third film in team’s self-described “Irish folklore trilogy” to be nominated for an Oscar. Back in 2010, the Moore- and Twoney-directed The Secret of Kells was up for Best Animated Feature. In 2015, Moore helmed Song of the Sea which also was nominated in the category.

This time around, Wolfwalkers certainly has extra bite with the thespian who portrayed Game of Thrones’ onetime King of the North onboard. Bean provides the voice for the Bill Goodfellowe, the cunning hunter and Robyn’s father.

“We were actually really really lucky that he said yes, because we had even designed Bill to look like Sean Bean from a couple of years before,” Stewart admitted of the casting of the Yorkshire native. “So, if he had said no, we might have had to redesign the whole character.”
Fortunately for Team Wolfwalkers and the film’s audience, that didn’t turn out to be the case.

Will Wolfwalkers make it fifth time lucky at the Oscars for Cartoon Saloon?
Quote
It's this year’s David versus Goliath story at the Oscars. Pixar, the global powerhouse behind the Toy Story franchise, and industrious Kilkenny indie studio Cartoon Saloon are both in the running for Best Animated Feature.

Pixar is the favourite to take the glittering prize for their latest movie Soul, while the Marble City will be hoping to be covered in Oscar glory on Sunday night for their superb film Wolfwalkers.

They are very different movies, both thematically and in terms of production. Soul, made with a multi-million-dollar budget, is an existential odyssey about a New York jazz pianist who suddenly finds himself trapped in a strange land between Earth and the afterlife and it deals in some very Big Questions.

Wolfwalkers (budget: €10 million) is set in Kilkenny during the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland in the 17th century but it actually trades in issues of a far more tangible nature than Soul, such as the environment, the scars of history, and friendship against the odds.

As well as Soul, Wolfwalkers is also up against A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon, Onward, and Over the Moon for that prized Oscar on Sunday night.

It's a very different #academyawards this year for all the Nominees.
Keep an eye on our posts and stories later this evening where we'll be sharing some snippets from behind the scenes of getting ready for the #academyawards2021 in #Kilkenny and how the rest of the crew will be celebrating virtually.

Wolfwalkers: 'This year the Oscars are coming to Kilkenny'
Quote
There is no mistaking the pride in Tomm Moore's voice when asked about his animation studio's latest award nomination.

"This year the Oscars are coming to Kilkenny," he said.

It's the fifth time that Cartoon Saloon has been nominated for an Oscar.

But, so far, the gold statuette has eluded them.

Moore is co-founder of the Kilkenny-based operation that is now considered a key player on the animation world stage.

According to the County Down native, previous disappointments don't take the shine off the Oscar nod for the studio's most recent animated feature, Wolfwalkers.

Although he does admit the 2021 Academy Awards will be very different, as Covid-19 travel restrictions mean no glitzy trip to Hollywood for them.

"They're setting up an outside broadcast for us in front of Kilkenny Castle, so we'll be standing there from about 2am onwards," he said.

"It's always exciting to be part of such a big event, the trick is to take it reasonably lightly and enjoy it rather than take it too seriously."

Pixar's latest film, Soul, is the Irish studio's biggest competitor in the Best Animated Feature Film category in Sunday night's Oscars.

Soul features Pixar's first black protagonist, a jazz pianist who goes on an existential journey about the meaning of life. It fended off competition from Wolfwalkers to pick up a Bafta for Best Animated Film earlier this month.

But Moore is pretty relaxed about his chances of winning.

"Its always to hard to beat Disney and Pixar, it would be amazing if it happened, and who knows?

"We've been an underdog for a long time. My favourite film is Rocky you know, so I don't mind being the underdog."
