Sean Bean (Broken, Game Of Thrones) and Stephen Graham (Line Of Duty, The Virtues) will reunite to lead a gripping new prison drama from Jimmy McGovern for BBC One. Time is a three-part series and will be produced by BBC Studios Production. It begins filming in Liverpool this autumn.
Seen through the eyes of two very different men, Time is a visceral and high-stakes portrayal of life in the modern British penal system. It is a story of guilt and forgiveness, punishment and penitence and the impact that prison has on all those who pass through it. Time is emotional and thrilling, showcasing the performances of two of Britain’s finest and best-loved actors.

Sean Bean takes on the role of Mark Hebden, a teacher, husband and father, who killed an innocent man in an accident. Consumed by guilt, he accepts and even welcomes his four-year sentence. Separated from his family, he has no idea what to expect in this unforgiving new environment and needs to learn quickly how to survive.

Stephen Graham is Eric Reid, a prison officer. Caring and honest, Eric tries his very best to protect those in his charge, something which is a daily challenge in this understaffed and high-tension world. When one of the most dangerous inmates identifies his weakness, Eric faces an impossible choice between his principles and his love for his family.

Both Eric and Mark, officer and inmate, are seemingly trapped by their pasts and unsure of their futures. Each has to not only survive, but to find the strength and the way to move forward.

Writer Jimmy McGovern says: “The BBC have given me a brilliant young director and two of the greatest actors on the planet. I am overjoyed.”

Sean Bean says: “Getting to be involved in a Jimmy McGovern drama again is a real privilege and it will be great to be reunited with Stephen. Mark Hebden is another of Jimmy’s complex and superbly written characters and I am looking forward to bringing him to life on screen.”

Stephen Graham says: “It is an absolute honour to be working with Jimmy again, I’m feeling blessed. I’m excited to be working with Lewis as I have heard so many incredible things about him as a director, I can’t wait to get stuck in. Of course, I am made up to be back on set with Sean.”

Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, says: “Jimmy has a unique style of creating thought-provoking dramas which tell raw and emotional stories, and Time is exactly that. With Sean and Stephen in lead roles, Jimmy and Lewis behind the camera, Time is a shining example of British drama talent at its best.”

Tom Sherry, Executive Producer and Head of BBC Studios Drama North and Scotland, says: “It’s a joy to be working with Jimmy again. He writes unforgettable characters who live on in your mind long after you have seen them. Time will show you a world within a world and leave you questioning, what would you do?”

Time was commissioned by Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama and Charlotte Moore, Chief Content Officer. It will be directed by Lewis Arnold and executive produced by Tom Sherry and Michael Parke for BBC Studios and Lucy Richer for the BBC. It will be produced by Simon Maloney. It is being distributed internationally by BBC Studios.

Details of film and TV COVID insurance scheme published
Quote
The government has now released draft proposals for its Film and TV Production Restart Scheme.

The government backed Ł500m scheme was announced back in July and is aimed at helping film and TV shows struggling to get insurance for Covid-related costs get back into production. It came about after industry lobbying.

Proposals state that to be eligible, productions must be spending at least 50% of their budget in the UK. Excluded productions include live news and current affairs, live sports and events coverage, theatre productions that are being filmed and all commercials and corporate productions.

Productions will also need to meet various ‘social commitments’ such as not using unpaid runners and paying National Living Wage. Productions will also have to comply with commitments around diversity.

The scheme still has to get State Aid approval from the European Commission before it can officially go ahead.

DCMS have appointed Marsh Commercial as the Third Party Administrator for the Scheme.

The registration deadline for the scheme is 31 December 2020, and claims will be able to be submitted up to 30 November 2021 for losses incurred up until 30 June 2021.

New BBC crime drama series starring Sean Bean and Stephen Graham being filmed at Shrewsbury Prison
Quote
Time is the new prison-drama series starring Sean Bean and Stephen Graham - and it's being filmed at Shrewsbury prison until Friday 20 November.

The three-part series was only announced by the BBC and acclaimed writer Jimmy McGovern in September. The series will be directed by Broadchurch’s Lewis Arnold. McGovern said: “The BBC have given me a brilliant young director and two of the greatest actors on the planet. I am overjoyed.”

It was anticipated they would film in Liverpool this autumn, but Shrewsbury Prison has now become the location of choice. Crime-drama fans should expect Time to arrive on screens towards the end of the year or early 2021.

Filming underway at Shrewsbury's former prison could be a major BBC drama
Quote
A production crew has moved into Shrewsbury's Dana prison - which has shut its doors until midway through November.

While neither the BBC nor those behind the company that runs the former prison and a visitor attraction will confirm it, it is believed that the crew is there for the new drama, Time. It had been due to be filmed in Liverpool but the city is now under the tight lockdown restrictions.

Joel Campbell from the prison company said: "All we can say is that the prison is closed to the public and there is a production taking place."

The prison drama from Jimmy McGovern is a three-part series.

BBC tight-lipped about new show being filmed at Shrewsbury's former prison
Two of Britain's top TV and film stars are believed to be filming a tough new drama in the county.
Quote
A production crew has been at Shrewsbury's Dana prison for several weeks and the venue has now shut its doors to the public until November.

The Dana did initially stay open, with sections of the prison closed off to the public, but it is now completely closed aside from on weekends.

Neither the BBC, nor those behind the company that runs the prison tours, would confirm what production is being filmed but the crew is believed to be there for a new drama called Time.

The show had been due to be filmed in Liverpool but the city is now under the tight lockdown restrictions.

The former guards that show visitors around the Victorian building have also been tight-lipped about what series is being filmed.

First look image released of Sean Bean and Stephen Graham in Jimmy McGovern’s Time for BBC One

Quote
A first look image has been released today of Sean Bean as prisoner Mark Cobden and Stephen Graham as prison officer Eric McNally in BBC One’s major new drama Time, written by Jimmy McGovern and made by BBC Studios Production.

Joining Sean and Stephen in the cast are Siobhan Finneran (Happy Valley, The Other One), Sue Johnston (The Royle Family, Downton Abbey), Hannah Walters (This is England, Pirates of the Caribbean), David Calder (The World Is Not Enough, The Hatton Garden Job) Nadine Marshall (Small Axe, Sitting in Limbo), Michael Socha (This is England, Being Human) and Aneurin Barnard (Dunkirk, Thirteen).

Currently filming in and around Liverpool, Time has secured funding and support from the Liverpool Film Office through the LCR Production Fund.

A visceral, emotional and high-stakes portrayal of life in a British prison; Mark Cobden (Sean Bean) is consumed by guilt after accidentally killing an innocent man. Accepting his four year sentence and separated from his family, he meets Eric McNally (Stephen Graham), a caring prison officer doing his best to protect those in his charge. However when one of the most dangerous inmates identifies his weakness, Eric faces an impossible choice; between his principles and his family.

A story of guilt and forgiveness, punishment and penitence, both Eric and Mark are trapped by their pasts and unsure of their futures. Will they find the strength to move forward?

Time was commissioned by Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama and Charlotte Moore, Chief Content Officer. It is directed by Lewis Arnold (Des, Humans) and executive produced by Tom Sherry and Michael Parke for BBC Studios Production and Lucy Richer for the BBC alongside Jimmy McGovern, Sean Bean and Stephen Graham. The producer is Simon Maloney (King Charles III, I May Destroy You) and the series is distributed internationally by BBC Studios.

When will Time on BBC start?
Time was commissioned earlier this year by the BBC but filming hadn't been able to start until reasonably recently.

This is of course because of the pandemic, as the filming schedule had to be put back.

The cast and crew of Time are now currently filming in and around Liverpool for the three-part drama.

So as of writing this article, no release date has been revealed for Time.

Best new TV dramas in 2021 including Killing Eve, Marcella and Line of Duty

Time, BBC1, autumn

This prison thriller from Jimmy McGovern should deliver his usual gritty, visceral drama.

Sean Bean and Stephen Graham lead the three-parter, looking at guilt forgiveness, and punishment through the eyes of two very different men.

Bean plays a teacher who killed a man by accident, while Stephen plays a prison officer – but quite frankly, we’d watch these two doing nothing.

Snowpiercer's Sean Bean says "it's hard to switch off" from filming "brutal" BBC drama
"It's kind of intense physically and mentally."
Quote
Snowpiercer's Sean Bean has admitted that "it's hard to switch off" when filming the BBC's new "brutal" drama Time.

A three-part series directed by Lewis Arnold (Des, Broadchurch, Humans), Time follows the guilt-ridden character of Mark Cobden (Bean), who's serving a four-year prison sentence for killing an innocent man.

Separated from his family, Mark befriends the nice-natured guard Eric McNally (Stephen Graham), who does his best to protect those behind the bars.

However, when one of the most dangerous prisoners identifies Eric's kindness as a weakness, Mark is forced into a difficult position.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Bean opened up about his physically and mentally "intense" role, admitting it's hard to switch off after filming a heavy scene.

"I can usually do that quite easily, but this is very bleak," he said. "It's kind of intense physically and mentally. It's hard to switch off sometimes, especially if you've done a heavy scene, and it's very emotional. That's a bit tricky to turn off."

He added: "I'm usually quite good at, as you said, switching off. And I do, most of the time. But there are some things in this that are so emotionally charged, so heartfelt and brutal, that it's difficult to rid yourself of that straight away. You just need a little bit of time."

Time will air on BBC One later this year.

Serving Time

Bafta-winning writer Jimmy McGovern and executive producer Tom Sherry tell DQ about partnering with stars Sean Bean and Stephen Graham on Time, a prison-set drama in which an inmate and an officer contemplate guilt and forgiveness.

For his latest series, Bafta-winning writer Jimmy McGovern has reunited with stars Sean Bean and Stephen Graham for a story about guilt, forgiveness, punishment and penitence set inside a British prison.

Three-parter Time sees Bean play Mark Hebden, a teacher, husband and father who kills an innocent man in an accident. Facing up to his four-year sentence, he has no idea what to expect behind bars and finds he must quickly learn how to survive. Meanwhile, Graham plays Eric Reid, a prison officer who faces an impossible choice between his family and his principles when one of the prison’s most dangerous inmates identifies his weakness.

Known for writing both characterful, often issue-led drama (Care, The Street, Accused, Moving On) and dramatisations of real-life events (Hillsborough, Sunday), McGovern says it was “the Catholic in me” that led him to want to tell a story about atonement and a man stuck in prison facing up to the events that led him there.

“Those flashbacks keep on coming and Mark sees them as part of the atonement process, and then he realises they’re not, they’re just a constant reminder that you need to atone,” McGovern tells DQ. “But how do you atone stuck in a prison, locked up 23 hours a day? There’s nothing you can do to atone but you still need to. Then the Stephen Graham story is always one I love. It’s a man who will do anything, anything at all for his family, and is called upon to do it.”

“Mark is somebody who made a mistake that he could have avoided but will regret forever more,” continues executive producer Tom Sherry. “Eric’s story is about somebody who makes a decision that was outside of his control and ultimately, yes, we all have choices, but sometimes the choices are so equally flawed that you can’t win. That was an interesting parallel in terms of what the two characters find themselves doing.”

As his personal officer, Eric builds a relationship with Mark that is particularly notable for the fact that Eric is an honest and caring guard, unlike many of the familiar authoritarian figures seen in other films and television series set in prison.

“The more research I did, the more I was constantly looking around for bad prison officers,” admits McGovern. “I’ve never been in prison. I’ve visited lots of prisons in my life and done lots of workshops there, but I’ve never been in there as an inmate. But I was constantly looking out for these bad prison officers and didn’t see one. They all seem to be pretty decent people trying to do the best they can.”

For Sherry, that meant the series could offer up a fresh storytelling dynamic and challenge misconceived perceptions of prison guards.

“It makes it more engaging to go, ‘Actually, they are good people in a difficult set of circumstances,’” he says. “And similarly, Mark is ultimately a good man who has made an unforgivable mistake. We didn’t want to show a career criminal but show an everyman. Mark represents that as well.”

McGovern believes Time also stands out from other prison dramas by the number of scenes spent inside Mark’s cell, rather than in communal areas or the canteen. “I don’t know of any British prison in which that actually happens, but it’s constantly shown on the screen: people sitting down in the canteen and eating,” he notes. “In reality, they take the food to their cell, one person would sit on a bunk and the other guy sits on the lavatory and that’s how they eat. So an awful lot of our stuff takes place in cells, probably a lot more than in typically American prison dramas.”

In the hands of another writer, characters like Mark and Eric might have had their stories play out in another setting. But it was McGovern’s particular interest in the power struggles within prisons that led him to set the miniseries in that particular environment.

“If you’re being picked upon in prison, the only way to stop being picked upon is to tell a prison officer. But if you tell a prison officer in a British prison you’re being picked upon, you’ll be picked upon even more,” he states. “There is no way out of it, so that’s the fascination of the ordinary life in a British prison. You do not grass. This guy Mark is a teacher, he’d never use the word ‘grassing,’ but this is a lesson he learns very early on that you simply do not grass. You cannot grass, you cannot inform, you cannot put your hand up and say, ‘I am being mercilessly persecuted here.’ You cannot do it. He has to sort it out for himself.

“I’m constantly fascinated by what happens if a big man takes your food. I’ve written that quite a few times and we see an element of that in Time. A big man simply comes along and takes Mark’s food. What does he do? He cannot put his hand up and tell somebody.”

Sherry describes prison life as a “world within a world,” a complete society where everything you need exists behind the high walls and towering gates. “There are many of them in almost every big city around the country and yet most of us don’t know about it,” he says. “It’s a world we don’t get to see. This was a really fascinating opportunity to see how you can boil society down to a very distilled and small, contained environment and then see how it operates.”

McGovern says he has carried the story of Time with him for a while, writing the series over the course of two years as his initial plans for a six-part series were whittled down to the final, leaner, three-episode format.

The best advice I’ve ever heard is if you want a great five-parter, commission six and throw the first one in the bin,” he reveals. “Often the first episode in any drama series is always a waste of space.” He also jokes that very little of his time in his office is spent writing, likening it to a striker in a football match who might touch the ball for 30 seconds in a 90-minute game.

“Years ago, I did have set hours,” he recalls. “I would start work at 9am and finish at six. These days I’m getting lazy and tired. I do come into the office in the morning and leave it in the early evening, but in the course of that, God knows what happens. I check emails, I’ve got a lovely lawn. When I should be writing, I’m tending that lawn. I do all the things I shouldn’t do.”

The writer previously worked with Bean and Graham in his anthology series Accused, in which each episode follows a different character as they await their verdict in court, revealing the story of how they got there. They both appeared in an episode called Tracie’s Story, in which teacher Simon (Bean)’s transvestite alter ego Tracie becomes entangled in a dangerous love triangle involving Tony (Graham). Both actors have also appeared in other McGovern series, Graham in The Street and Bean in Broken.

I just love working with the pair of them,” he exclaims. “If you look at an actor, what you want to see is humanity. I don’t think there’s any actor in the country with more humanity than those two guys, and the older they get, the more you see it. They have lived their lives. They’ve sunk a few pints, you can see it and they are so human. That’s what I love about them. The two of them are technically absolutely brilliant. But they have humanity written in every crease of their faces. That’s the thing I like.

“There is an irony that the two of them have played tough guys lots of times, really hard men, real tough guys, but their best work is when they’re vulnerable. They are just so moving when vulnerable.”

As executive producers, both actors also supported the production behind the scenes, with Graham particularly involved in casting. Their co-stars include Siobhan Finneran (Happy Valley), Sue Johnston (The Royle Family), Hannah Walters (This is England), David Calder (The World Is Not Enough), Nadine Marshall (Small Axe), Michael Socha (This is England), Aneurin Barnard (Dunkirk) and Jack McMulllen (The First Team).

“They both cared passionately about making sure this piece happened and they knew their involvement and their commitment to the project would ultimately improve its chances of happening,” Sherry says. “When we were going through the problems of Covid and rescheduling and all of that, having them there not just us as actors but as part of the production gave them an opportunity to show their investment in us.”

Produced and distributed by BBC Studios, the series was gearing up for pre-production in March last year when plans were put on hold as the UK went into its first lockdown, leaving the production team to reschedule the 12-week shoot for later in the year. Filming did eventually start in Shrewsbury, where scenes in the prison wing and Mark’s cell were shot, before the cameras moved to Liverpool to create the rest of the prison with a mash-up of courtrooms, police stations and education buildings.

“At one stage Jimmy told me he’d written a piece that’s just set in one location, so what’s my problem?” Sherry says. “But there’s a lot more to it than just one place. And the reality is that there aren’t many prisons available because they are being used. Obviously, because of Covid, we couldn’t go anywhere near those. When we did various prison visits and spoke to officers, there’s so much more to it than the Porridge-type version, which is just a cell and a wing. That was something we wanted to include in the piece, so finding that was quite a challenge.”

But filming during the pandemic was “quite unlike any other filming experience I’ve every been through,” admits Sherry, BBC Studios’ head of drama north. “It was really tough, I won’t deny it. Filming is normally problem-solving on the hoof and a collective team effort. This took it to another level in terms of what the problems were. Thankfully, we had a brilliant script, unbelievable cast and the best crew I’ve ever worked with. If we didn’t have those elements, we would have found it far harder.”

Speaking to DQ ahead of the BBC Studios Showcase that will launch the series to international buyers before its BBC1 launch later this year, McGovern pitches Time as a gripping story that speaks to the human condition.

“Dostoevsky says don’t judge a society by how it treats its successful people, you judge it by how it treats its criminals,” he says. “Prisons in this country are a disgrace and they need reform.”

“That’s no reflection on the genuinely kind-hearted, spirited souls who are trying to run the prison,” Sherry says. “Siobhan Finneran’s character is a great element of this story as an individual trying to make a difference, and we do see that in the story. Anybody watching it couldn’t help but be moved by the emotional journey we take, not just with our lead characters but with some of the other characters as well. I would hope that anybody watching it would see that.”

Sue Johnston, 77, is cast as 61-year-old Sean Bean's mother in new prison drama... 30 years after she played his lover in Inspector Morse - as she hits out at the sexism older women face in casting

The last time they appeared on screen together, Sue Johnston and Sean Bean were lovers.

Now, 30 years on, they have been cast as mother and son – prompting the actress to hit out at the sexism facing older women in showbusiness.

'That's what happens to actresses in the theatre or TV business,' she complained. 'Men stay the same and women get to be mothers.'

The pair first acted together in a 1992 episode of Inspector Morse, in which Bean played a convicted fraudster and Johnston was his wife.

But while in the forthcoming BBC1 drama Time, Bean, 61, again plays a jailbird, this time 77-year-old Johnston is his mum.

The actress, best known for starring in Brookside and The Royle Family, says the news is typical of how actresses must age into older roles, while their male co-stars can remain in similar parts.

In a candid interview with the Soap From The Box podcast, Johnston said: 'I've just done this new drama called Time. It's a Jimmy McGovern prison drama, just brilliant, three-parter, as all Jimmy's are, and it's with Sean Bean, among others, and Stephen Graham.

'I play Sean Bean's mother. Now, the last time I worked with Sean in Inspector Morse, I was his lover and now I'm his mother. And that's what happens to actresses.'

Her accusations of sexism and ageism are likely to prompt unease at BBC Studios, the BBC's commercial production company, which made the series.

In it, former Sharpe star Bean portrays a teacher whose life is destroyed when he accidentally kills a man and is so consumed with guilt that he welcomes his four-year prison sentence.

Johnston is understood to have a large role in the series, which has just completed filming in her home city of Liverpool. Line Of Duty's Stephen Graham also stars in the show, as prison officer Eric Reid.

Johnston isn't the only actress to find herself playing her former lover's mother.

Oscar winner Sally Field played Tom Hanks's love interest in the 1988 comedy movie Punchline and, just six years later, appeared as his mother in Forrest Gump – even though she is only ten years older than him.

Such age discrimination is not rare in Hollywood. Nicole Kidman will play the mother of Jason Mamoa's character Arthur Curry in the forthcoming Aquaman 2 movie, even though 53-year-old Kidman is only 12 years older than her male co-star.

And in the 2004 film Alexander, Angelina Jolie played Colin Farrell's mother, despite being just one year his senior.

Nor is it a new phenomenon: in the 1959 Alfred Hitchcock film North By Northwest, Cary Grant was actually ten months older than Jessie Royce Landis, the actress who played his mother.

New BBC director-general Tim Davie last week unveiled his new 'critical' diversity drive, with targets to improve the percentages of under-represented groups on and off screen.

When he was appointed to his role last September, Davie criticised the 'obsession with youth' in broadcasting, but was soon drawn into an ageism storm after Sue Barker was dumped as the host of Question Of Sport at the age of 64.

The BBC said last night: 'Sue Johnston and David Calder, who are brilliant as Sean's parents in Time, were authentically and appropriately cast for these roles, as audiences will see when the drama airs.'

To be fair, I don't think this particular case is a good example of the type of sexism that was otherwise justifiably criticised by the article. Angelina Jolie played Alexander's mother from when he was a toddler until his death, approximately a 30-year span of time. It's reasonable to cast a young woman to play a young mother and then age her with makeup so the same actress can play the same character as a middle-aged woman.

Gritty scenes abound in BBC One’s new drama, Time, starring Sean Bean and Stephen Graham.

Written by Jimmy McGovern (Moving On, Broken), it’ll focus on the people who make up the prison system in the UK – inmates and guards alike. Described as a story of guilt and forgiveness, punishment and penitence and the impact that prison has on all those who pass through it, emotional stakes will be undoubtedly high.

Here’s all we know about Time so far.

Everything You Need to Know About 'Time', Stephen Graham and Sean Bean's New BBC Drama
Quote
It’s fair to say that anything graced by Stephen Graham is likely to be a must watch. In a career that’s spanned his breakthrough role as Compo in This Is England to Al Capone in Boardwalk Empire right through to The Virtues and Line of Duty, he’s rarely picked a dud production to be part of.

The same goes for Sean Bean, finding fame in Sharpe in the ‘90s, where he played a fictional soldier in the Napoleonic wars. Hollywood soon came calling and he went on to star in Patriot Games, Ronin and then the Lord of The Rings trilogy, where he found his natural home in the fantasy realm, which led to his now iconic part as Ned Stark in Game of Thrones.

And now, *dramatic movie voiceover* For the first time in history, the two legends of the screen will unite in Time, the gritty BBC prison drama by Jimmy McGovern. Actually, if we’re splitting hairs, it’ll be the second time these best-of-British actors will share screen time, as they previously starred in the 2012 drama, Accused, which was also penned by McGovern. However, rather than just a stand-alone episode, Time will be a whole, meaty three-parter that looks at the bleak realities of life in prison, and the power struggles within the jail.

As these two acting world giants get ready to go head-to-head in one of the year’s most anticipated dramas, here’s everything we know so far about the series so far.

Let’s not beat around the bush: it’s heavy from the off. The synopsis says: “Seen through the eyes of two very different men, Time is a visceral and high-stakes portrayal of life in the modern British penal system. It is a story of guilt and forgiveness, punishment and penitence and the impact that prison has on all those who pass through it.” Phew.

The men (described by McGovern as “two of the greatest actors on the planet”) each cover both sides of the prison system: prisoner and prison officer. But, things aren’t quite as clear cut as that, as they’re both struggling with their positions in jail.

We last saw Graham on screen getting his throat sliced for being “a rat” - an undercover cop in a gang in Line of Duty. He’s flipped to the other side again now, and plays Eric McNally, a prison officer, who looks to be a decent enough bloke. That’s until one of the prisoners discovers a compromising secret that puts his family in danger - how far will he go to protect them?

Bean is the one doing time, playing the permanently shell-shocked teacher Mark Cobden, who can’t believe he’s found himself in prison. But it transpires he’s killed an innocent man, and he’s eaten up with guilt as it was an accident. There’s some proper watching-through-your-fingers moments as Cobden navigates the brutal prison system and the people trapped within it. Let’s just say you might want to pass on a cup of tea with extra sugar.

It’s a luvvie-in, of course. Stephen Graham says: “It is an absolute honour to be working with Jimmy again, I’m feeling blessed. I can’t wait to get stuck in. Of course, I am made up to be back on set with Sean.”

Sean Bean says: “Getting to be involved in a Jimmy McGovern drama again is a real privilege and it will be great to be reunited with Stephen. Mark Cobden is another of Jimmy’s complex and superbly written characters and I am looking forward to bringing him to life on screen.”

It’s being blasted on to your telly box on Sunday 6 June at 9pm on BBC One. Until then, you’ll just have to bide your….Time. Sorry.

Sean Bean has built a career on playing bits of rough. He was Napoleonic rough in Sharpe, Middle-earth rough in The Lord of the Rings, Westerosi rough in Game of Thrones, and even arthouse rough in Derek Jarman’s Caravaggio. So it’s a shock to see him in Time — the pulverising new prison drama from Jimmy McGovern, the creator of Cracker and The Lakes — portraying a wimp.

Well, a relative wimp because Mark, the first-time middle-class convict whom Bean plays in the BBC three-parter, contends with prison in the way most of us would: with meek, wide-eyed terror. Sean Bean was forced to take a 10-day break from filming the BBC’s new prison drama Time, due to a coronavirus scare, the director has said.

Bean plays the newly imprisoned Mark Cobden in the series, written by Jimmy McGovern, while Stephen Graham appears as Eric McNally, a principled jail officer.

Lewis Arnold, who directed the three episodes, said the production had to carry on without many of its stars, including Bean, following a health scare.

He said: “We were filming in Liverpool during the height of the pandemic, we had to change the plan every day.

“We lost Sean Bean for 10 days and all of our main core cast because we had an incident with Covid.”

Arnold said the cast was “all fine”.

Arnold also discussed the difficulties of filming during a pandemic, with production taking place in Liverpool and at a prison in Shrewsbury.

He said: “Everything changed on a day-to-day basis.

“And the cast and the crew were so accommodating and understanding, and the work never really suffered, they found ways.

“And I think our producing team really struggled and still managed to hopefully create a drama where I hope you don’t feel it’s been filmed during the pandemic, with social distancing in place and all those kinds of things.”

Time also features actors Siobhan Finneran, Sue Johnston, David Calder, Nadine Marshall and Hannah Walters, who is Graham’s wife.

Graham, an established Hollywood star, praised the show’s “ensembleness”.

He said: “The amount of talent I feel, personally, that was on display in this piece, I know you’re following the story of these two men predominantly but the cast around is phenomenal.”

Time will air weekly on BBC One from Sunday June 6 at 9pm, with the full series available as a boxset on BBC iPlayer once episode one has aired.

'Time' with Sean Bean and Stephen Graham — cast interviews, release date, trailer and our guide to this new prison drama
Quote
Sean Bean on Time's Mark Cobden...
Sean Bean plays mild-mannered teacher Mark Cobden who is brought to Craigmore Prison to start a four-year sentence for accidentally killing a man. But prison proves a terrible shock to Mark and life quickly becomes unbearable when he finds himself incarcerated alongside aggressive and disturbed fellow inmates.

Sean says: ‘Time tells you what it’s like for a regular guy to be imprisoned, and the nightmare that is,’ he says. ‘Mark has had an uninteresting, normal life where nothing much happens. But he suddenly finds himself taken to prison and locked up among a frightening bunch of people who are all going through their own suffering, mayhem and paranoia.'

To make matters worse, Mark, who’s estranged from wife Alicia (Nadine Marshall), misses his teenage son terribly, and is plagued with remorse about the crime he’s committed. ‘It’s a thing he can never atone for,’ says Sean. ‘He takes on all the responsibility and all the guilt because that's what he believes he should do.

‘Time is about lots of different facets of being imprisoned and guilt, suffering and inequality. You’ve got a real cauldron of emotions and violence and it’s every man for himself…’

BBC One’s Time was written with Sean Bean and Stephen Graham in mind
Quote
BBC One prison drama Time was written with series leads Sean Bean and Stephen Graham in mind, according to creator Jimmy McGovern.

The “difficult to watch” series reunites the two actors, who previously co-starred together in a standalone episode of Accused, also penned by McGovern.

Speaking to RadioTimes.com and other press, McGovern said he had Bean and Graham “uppermost” in his thoughts when he wrote their characters: Mark (Bean), a soft-spoken inmate, and Eric (Graham), a principled prison guard.

“I did. I had those two [actors] uppermost in my thoughts all the way through,” he said. “Yeah, absolutely. Because I just think that they’ve got faces you’d die for, you know? Full of life; full of compassion and humanity. I think if you’re going to write about a prison, that’s the kind of thing you need, isn’t it? Compassion, humanity, experience all in the lines of those faces.”

Graham responded, “It’s such an honour for me to even hear that Jimmy’s considering me while he’s writing the character. For me, that’s something that’s beyond my wildest dreams.”

On working with Graham and McGovern again, Bean previously said, “Getting to be involved in a Jimmy McGovern drama again is a real privilege and it will be great to be reunited with Stephen. Mark Cobden is another of Jimmy’s complex and superbly written characters and I am looking forward to bringing him to life on screen.”

Stephen Graham and Jimmy McGovern on 'Time', and How the Prison-Industrial Complex Fails Us
"Time says something that should be said about the British penal system - it’s not good, I’m afraid. It needs looking at”
Quote
Halfway through Time, the new hard-hitting Jimmy McGovern prison drama, one of the guards, Eric McNally (Stephen Graham) is launched upon by a grieving mother outside the jail. Her son - in prison for manslaughter - has died in their care, and she cries out: “You put a seriously ill boy in segregation and that’s when he decided to kill himself!”. McNally replies: “You say he should have been in hospital, but that goes for half the men in this place. They should all be in mental hospitals, not in this nick. But there’s no room for them, so they stay here and we do the best we can.”

It’s a theme that runs at the heart of the often brutal three-part BBC series. The show focuses on two men’s experiences of either side of the system, Graham as the “firm but fair” prison guard, forced into an impossible moral dilemma; and Sean Bean as Mark Cobden, an older teacher serving time, wracked with guilt for killing a man while drink driving and who now has to navigate the ruthless workings and hierarchies of the jail.

But beneath these two men’s stories, we’re also shown a no-holds barred inner workings of the prison industrial complex. It’s a look into the other side of the justice system, what happens to people once we lock them up in the hope of punishment, retribution or rehabilitation. The sad answer is almost always none of those things. What we see are desperate and disturbed men, many with mental health conditions; locked away, growing angrier, forced into violence or gang activity or turning to drugs, which are rife within the prison.

According to a Ministry of Justice report, as of November 2020, there are currently 78,838 prisoners in jail - the number of inmates has almost doubled since 1993 - and this is expected to rise to 98,700 by 2026. Nationwide austerity measures have had a devastating effect on prisons and their inmates. Speaking to Vice, forensic psychologist Kerry Daynes said that more than 70 percent of inmates suffer significant mental health problems while serving time: “Prisoners are an 'out of sight, out of mind' group, and the myth of cushy, holiday-camp British jails is still the stuff of tabloid headlines. When prisons are pressured and punitive rather than rehabilitative, they create more of the very problems they were designed to tackle – post jail-term reoffending rates are at an all-time high.”

The creator of Time, Jimmy McGovern (also the writer behind The Lakes, Hillsborough and Accused) said it’s an issue that’s bothered him since the ‘80s, when he spent time leading writing workshops in prisons. At a launch event for the series, he said: “I was always fascinated by it for all kinds of reasons but the main reason is I always felt ‘there but for the grace of god go I’. I was young and skint once as well, I did a few naughty things but I was extremely lucky.”

As the drama expands to cover the back stories of the other prisoners (featuring highly-charged, emotive turns from Aneurin Barnard, Jack McMullen and Jonathan Harden) we’re given a glimpse into the motivations for their crimes - desperation, poverty, revenge, even “saving face”. In some of the most unfortunate cases, it’s simply making the wrong split-second decision, like Mark getting in his car after a vodka session. McGovern added that we’re all potentially not too far from finding ourselves in a similar situation: “I’ve been close, especially when I was a young man, I was a headcase, I really was. But Time says something that should be said about the British penal system - it’s not good, I’m afraid. It needs looking at.”

Graham agreed: “I think there’s certain elements or things we could do that could put us in those situations, or things which are beyond our control which could put us in those situations.” But, he noted, “There’s those elements of the system itself that can also go against the individual.

“[Series like Time] have that term ‘difficult to watch’. So why is this difficult to watch? It’s because it’s coming into your living room and like Jimmy says, we need to look at the penal system, and certain elements within it.”

As part of Graham’s role, he swatted up on life on the inside through the Channel 4 documentary series Prison: “I just thought it was brilliant, it gave such an insight which was magnificent, it was tearful and [full of] things which our piece goes into and develops, such as people who are in prison who shouldn’t really be, they should be in a mental institution”.

He also spent time with a prison officer of 30 years who gave him further insight on the role of prison guard: “After about two and a half hours with him I came back and I kind of got into character and opened the cell door. I stood in there with my back to the door, opened the flap before I went in. You always make sure you have your back to the door, that you don’t get trapped in the cell. The fella was helping me with other stuff, such as treating each prisoner differently, like a human being, but also having that firm but fair thing that’s also in the script. I soaked it up like a sponge.”

The drama was filmed in and around Liverpool and in a disused prison in Shrewsbury that was painted a colour that was intentionally made to look miserable and oppressive - a greying tone that washes out the actors that the set designer specially created for the job. Graham said: “When that seeps out of the walls, as an actor, I find they’re creating a playground for us to believe we’re in, which is 98 percent of the job for us, to believe where you are. The environment of the prison was so brilliantly done.”

The climax of Time comes to a gripping end and questions the idea of crime and punishment and whether atonement is ever truly possible. It’s something that will have viewers mulling over long after the credits finish. Graham added: “Time is not overtly political, or ramming an opinion down anyone’s throats but if it’s difficult to watch it’s because you’re looking at a society which is represented by yourself.

“Jimmy’s putting a mirror up to society and going, ‘I’m not sure if we’re getting this right?’ It makes you think. And if I can be part of something to make you think for a split second after it, then that’s all I ever wanted to be a part of. Something that says something socially, d’you know what I mean?”

Time starts on BBC One on Sunday June 6 at 9pm.

Over the past 20 years three working-class men have done more to define and challenge what it is to be a British man on TV than almost anyone else — writer Jimmy McGovern, Stephen Graham and Sean Bean. In Time, McGovern’s new prison drama, they reunite for the first time since Tracie’s Story, a 2012 episode of Accused. Bean plays Mark Cobden, a teacher, husband and father who is jailed for manslaughter and finds the brutality of prison life too much for his soft background. Graham is Eric McNally, the prison officer trying to protect him but putting his family in peril as a result.

Sean’s a gentleman. The mad thing is you forget how old he is, you forget his age. He’s just a gentleman. He walks round on set, he introduces himself to everyone, he’s always there if anyone wants a coffee.

When it came to the scenes, I remember halfway through the shoot, I was stepping on one morning and he just went: “Oh, no – not you again James!” Because basically every scene I’m in, I’m making his life hell.

I just walked away from it with a bit of a man crush on him, if I’m honest.

Time is the eagerly-anticipated prison drama starring none other than actors Sean Bean and Stephen Graham. The series tells the story of a newly imprisoned Mark Cobden (played by Sean Bean) who is racked with guilt for the crime he committed, while prison officer Eric (Stephen Graham) faces a moral dilemma. Time will premiere on BBC One on Sunday, June 6, at 9pm.

What prison was Time filmed at?
Time was shot in and around Liverpool, the hometown of former This is England and Line of Duty star actor Graham.

But the majority of the show, which is set in a prison, was actually filmed around 50 miles away.

Director Lewis Arnold told press, including Express.co.uk, that these scenes were shot at Shrewsbury Prison.

The building was opened in 1793 but in January 2013, it was announced that the prison was scheduled for closure with its remaining inmates being transferred elsewhere.

Arnold explained: "The prison wasn't in Liverpool because you obviously have to go to a disused prison and the visiting room, our designer took an old school gym and turned it into a visit room which was wonderful.

"Eric's and Sonia's house was in Liverpool so there were many elements shot in Liverpool but the majority of the key prison stuff, the landings, were shot in a disused prison which ironically myself and the executive producer shot in five years ago when it first closed.

"It was supposed to be turned into student accommodation but that never happened lucky for us so we were able to use it now."

Arnold continued: "We looked at so many different prisons as well but that prison had such a feeling, energy, especially when [the set designer] went in and put a visual stamp on it.

"And it's been left that way, they didn't want us to repaint it so it still very much looks like what we left it.

"I think there's even a cell there that they left as Sean's [Bean] cell and Eric's little booth so people can see it if they wanted to.

Filming took place for Time at the prison in the latter half of 2020.

Time will air weekly on BBC One but following the first episode's release, all three instalments will be ready to watch on BBC iPlayer.

BBC’s Controller of Drama, Piers Wenger said: “Jimmy [McGovern, creator] has a unique style of creating thought-provoking dramas which tell raw and emotional stories, and Time is exactly that.

"With Sean and Stephen in lead roles, Jimmy and Lewis behind the camera, Time is a shining example of British drama talent at its best.”

Time will start on Sunday, June 6, at 9pm on BBC One.

“Horrible places, prisons,” a character says matter-of-factly at one point in Jimmy McGovern’s tough drama and, on what we’ve seen, it’s hard to disagree. From the start we’re drawn into a hard, alien world alongside hesitant Mark (Sean Bean), entering prison for the first time in his 50s. Asked what he is in for, he replies that he killed a man. But he doesn’t look capable of it, and his mild, decent demeanour – he was a schoolteacher – hardly equips him for prison life.

The early scenes give a sense of Mark adjusting to his new home: his cellmate (Aneurin Barnard) tormented by mental illness; the hard man on his wing (a terrifying turn from James Nelson-Joyce); and a seemingly decent prison officer, Eric (Stephen Graham). But Eric has his own problems, as McGovern charts the outline of a system that clamps its jaws on everyone involved. It’s not an upbeat story but it’s painfully well told. (All three parts are available on iPlayer from tonight.)

Why Jimmy McGovern's prison drama Time is 'difficult to watch'

Quote
Sean Bean and Stephen Graham star in BBC One's new prison drama Time, which begins on Sunday. The three-part series has been written by Jimmy McGovern, who says he hopes it shines a light on the reality of the British penal system.

McGovern, a renowned screenwriter who was also behind Hillsborough, Broken and Accused, says he initially had the idea of setting a drama in a cell block nearly four decades ago.

"From about 1982 onwards, I did a fair bit of work in prisons," he recalls. "I was always popping in there, doing the writer's workshop, popping out again. And I was always fascinated by it for all kinds of reasons.

"But I think the main reason is I always felt 'there but for the grace of God go I'. Because I was young and skint once, and I did a few naughty things, but I was extremely lucky." (McGovern has admitted committing non-violent crimes in his youth.) "And I'm always looking for stories, and the thing about a British prison is it's full of stories."

Liverpool-born McGovern's latest drama Time follows Mark Cobden (played by Bean), a former teacher who has been sentenced to four years inside for drink-driving, after a road accident he was involved in left a cyclist dead.

To start with, the impression the viewer gets is that Cobden doesn't belong here. He's a gentle, well-educated man, who has found himself locked up with some seriously vile and violent young men, who think nothing of literally torturing one another.

"Some scenes should almost certainly carry a content warning, if they should even be shown at all," says Digital Spy in its otherwise favourable review. "It's bleak stuff," agrees The Evening Standard. "There's a sense of grim, almost tragic inevitability to many of the stories that unfurl over the course of three episodes."

Ultimately, Cobden has to adapt and toughen up if he wants to survive. One of several points McGovern seems to be making is that the system is stacked against even the most well-intentioned and well-behaved prisoners.

But there are other themes at play too. The inmates are under-stimulated. There is drug-taking, blackmail, abuse and self-harm. Fights break out over food and phone calls. One character makes the point that their prison has nearly as many staff members as inmates. Another suggests that half of the convicts belong in a mental health facility rather than a prison.

McGovern supports the penal system overall - it's where many criminals belong, he comments, particularly those who are violent. Indeed, viewers will feel a sense of relief that prisons exist when they see some of the characters' behaviour. But he clearly wants to highlight particular elements which, in his view, could be improved.

"[The series] says something that should be said about the penal system, and it's not good," McGovern says. "The British penal system is not good I'm afraid, it needs looking at."

He gets more specific in another interview with BBC Radio 4's Today. "There should be more meaningful activity in British prisons. There should be education and training and jobs," he says.

"At the moment, the vast majority of prisoners are locked up 23 hours a day because of Covid, but even when Covid isn't there, they're still locked up in cells for long periods of time, and they should not be. We should aim to send them out better than when they went in."

In response, a Prison Service spokesman tells BBC News: "We know education is key to reducing reoffending and cutting crime, which is why we are creating a new Prisoner Education Service and work with around 400 employers to provide work and learning opportunities to offenders.

"We have kept education running throughout the pandemic where possible, and prisons are now easing restrictions in line with public health advice."

Bean and Graham previously worked together in the second series of Accused, which was also written by McGovern.

Here, Graham plays prison officer Eric McNally - another of the show's tough characters, albeit with a seemingly good heart. He ends up in a conflicted and unenviable position when inmates get wind that his own son has wound up in another prison, and use that information to threaten him.

Time is hardly the first gritty drama that Graham has found himself appearing in: This Is England, White House Farm and The Irishman are among his other films and TV credits. But the dark and often violent themes running through many of his performances are precisely what attracts Graham to them in the first place.

The actor says: "I love the fact that stuff I do is difficult to watch for people." He pauses for a moment. "What was that one on Netflix, set in the big house or whatever, that was dead successful over lockdown?"

His wife, fellow actor Hannah Walters, ventures an answer: "Bridgerton?"

"Yeah, that was not difficult to watch," continues Graham. "So why is this difficult to watch? Because it's coming into your living room and, as Jimmy said, we've got to look at the penal system, we need to look at certain things and elements within this piece.

"It's not overly political or ramming the message down your throat. But if it's difficult to watch, that's because you're looking at a society which is represented by yourself. So surely it's putting a mirror up to society, and going, 'Not sure if we're getting this right here.' So maybe that's why it's difficult to watch, because it makes you think. And that's all I ever wanted to be a part of. Something that's saying something socially. I want everything I do to be difficult to watch."

Like much of McGovern's work, Time is set in the north of England. The writer clearly enjoys telling stories from less well-represented parts of the country, but doing so throws up some unexpected challenges.

The crime and violence that runs through much of McGovern's work presents something of a Catch 22 - in so far as he wants to bring attention and work to northern cities, but without always depicting them negatively. Interestingly, Graham actually lost out on a role in the second series of Accused for this reason.

"There was a taxi driver [character] who takes a girl to the airport and goes back and burgles her house," McGovern recalls. "It was absolutely perfect for Stephen Graham, and I said, 'We can't have Stephen. We cannot have a Scouser playing the burglar, because of the negative stereotype attached to the city.'"

The taxi driver role eventually went to Andy Serkis, and Graham was instead cast as a different character in a different episode of the anthology series.

"And yet, at the same time, you want the work in the city," McGovern says, highlighting the benefits a TV production can bring to the local economy. "These are highly-paid and skilled jobs. So the only way around that, I think, is to shoot in the city but not necessarily set it in the city. But that leaves you wide open to charges of not giving Scouse actors jobs in Scouse dramas."

Jimmy McGovern on new BBC prison drama Time: “I didn’t want to write an easy villain”
Quote
The writer only recently learnt that Graham’s father is Black, which fascinated him: “I said, ‘You’re not Black,’ and he said, ‘I am!’” Does Graham identify as a Black person? “I don’t know how he identifies but he’s the most relaxed, unburdened man you’ll ever meet in your life.”
If you tell me Sean Bean is too, I won’t believe you! “Oh, Sean’s not Black,” McGovern says, misunderstanding me. “Sean’s a white working-class Yorkshire man.”
But if you’re about to tell me he’s completely chilled and relaxed… “No, he’s OK, Sean – he’s a lovely man. I love him to bits, like.”

Viewers of BBC One's new prison drama Time were left shocked yet enthralled after Sunday evening's debut episode.
Comments appeared on Twitter branding the show 'almost unwatchable' and 'absolutely brutal' - yet viewers admitted they'd be tuning in for the rest of the three-part series.
The show - which sees Line Of Duty's Stephen Graham and Game Of Thrones' Sean Bean play a prison officer and prisoner in the drama - wowed fans after episode one, which featured violence, suicide and the 'grim' reality of life in jail.
One viewer tweeted: '#Time was a very stressful hour... prison is a bit of a phobia for me, not sure I’ll be able to watch next week. It was excellent though - fantastic performances and writing but very very stressful!'
Another posted: 'If ever there was an advert not to break the law, that was it!'

A third penned: 'Time on #BBC1 is unbelievably grim. Grim, but accurate. Really communicates the oppression, violence and alienation of prison life. Sean Bean is utterly superb, the script and direction are excellent. But it's so powerful and true-to-life that it's almost unwatchable!'

'Oh my god I think I almost cried about five times during that opening episode Jesus, incredible but absolutely brutal and punishing to watch!' a fourth remarked.

Time viewers hail “sensational” Sean Bean in “grim” BBC drama
Quote
Jimmy McGovern’s new prison drama Time got off to a great start on BBC One last night (Sunday 6th June) and viewers were captivated – if a little shaken – by the first episode of the brutal three-part series.

The series follows Mark (Sean Bean), a former school teacher who finds himself forced to adjust to life in prison, and Eric (Stephen Graham) a long-time prison guard who finds his principles challenged by a run-in with a dangerous inmate.

The performances of acting heavyweights Graham and Bean came in for particular praise from fans, with many taking to social media to express their views.

One viewer wrote, “20 minutes into #Time & I don’t think I have drawn breath. Played beautifully & with intensity by @StephenGraham73 & Sean Bean, this is another superb piece of writing from Jimmy McGovern.”

Another fan Tweeted, “Thought #Time was absolutely fantastic. Sean Bean showing a real vulnerability & Stephen Graham was immense as always, Aneurin Barnard was absolutely brilliant as Bernard. Going to savour this and not binge! Jimmy McGovern knocks it out the park again.”

And a third added, “Just finishing watching Time on BBC, one of the best drama’s I’ve seen, the story, the acting, all impeccable, Sean Bean and @StephenGraham73…Brilliant.”

Speaking of the performances, one viewer wrote, “Sean Bean and Stephen Graham have got to be two of the best British actors of all time. Great start to a programme this.”

Bean’s performance was variously described as “sensational”, “a bit special”,  and “utterly superb” with one viewer saying that he “absolutely smashed it.”

And another fan made light of Bean’s much joked about habit of being killed off early in a series, writing, “Sean Bean and Stephen Graham two of our best actors in a gritty prison drama written by the superb Jimmy McGove
Viewers were also quick to point out how true to life and bleak the drama was, with one fan branding it “almost unwatchable” as a result of how powerful it was.

“Time on #BBC1 is unbelievably grim,” he said. “Grim, but accurate. Really communicates the oppression, violence and alienation of prison life. Sean Bean is utterly superb, the script and direction are excellent. But it’s so powerful and true-to-life that it’s almost unwatchable.”
Time continues on BBC One on Sunday 13th June at 9pm, and the full series is now available as a boxset on BBC iPlayer.

Watched all 3 parts a couple nights ago. So amazing. While it is my least favourite of the collaborations between Sean Bean and Jimmy McGovern, it is still phenomenal (like 9/10). It seems my favourite Bean projects seem to be from Jimmy McGovern, so I hope that there are at least one or two more collaborations before one of them retires.

Time: Sean Bean, Stephen Graham combine for a shocking, compelling prison drama
Quote
I have two words of advice for anything contemplating diving into the BBC’s latest prison drama: steel yourself.

Time (which begins screening on Prime at 9.30pm, tonight, Saturday, with episodes available on demand on Sky Go the same evening) assails you from the opening scene and doesn’t let up until the credits roll.

Thank goodness it’s only a three-parter, because the assault on the senses might not be sustainable.

But we’re not talking mere shock value here, this is a brilliantly executed look at two men on either side of the cell door of the prison system. One that welcomes back a beloved screenwriter – Cracker, Moving On, Hillsborough’s Jimmy McGovern – to prime time and showcases the talents of two of Britain’s most under-rated actors in Sean Bean and Stephen Graham.

Time begins screening on Prime at 9.30pm on Saturdays from June 12. Each episode will also be available to stream on Sky Go the same evening.

HELL IN A CELL BBC’s Time is a frighteningly real prison drama that’s the ultimate prison deterrent

GRITTY new drama Time has viewers gripped with its harrowing portrayal of prison life.

The BBC show, which continues tomorrow, follows guilt-ridden teacher Mark Cobden, played by Sean Bean, as he serves a four-year stretch for killing a man in an accident.

Bafta-winning writer Jimmy McGovern – who created Cracker – pulls no punches. He paints a brutal picture of life inside, including a horrific assault using boiling water mixed with sugar, known as “sugaring”, and self-harming with a razor blade.

Episode one saw Cobden punched in the face in a phone queue and horrified by the deafening noise and violence around him.

Time shines a light on the broken, lawless prison system – where drug dealers and gang members hold more sway than prison officers – and it should prove the ultimate deterrent to would-be criminals.

There were 24,407 prison assaults in the year to September 2020, including 8,476 attacks on staff. Over the past decade, there have been 32 murders inside.

But the prison system also fails to prevent crime. In the UK, 40 per cent of former inmates re-offend within the first 12 months of release.

As viewers gear up for the second episode, Alison Maloney asked three reformed convicts how realistic the show was – and what lessons can be learned from it.

Eric receives word that his son has been badly beaten at Chapel Grove and is currently in hospital. He gives in to the threats, and agrees to help smuggle drugs to spare his son further harm. Mark considers writing to the wife of the man he killed, and finds that his new cellmate is one of his former students - who accuses him of being a bad teacher. However, he may have a chance to put his skills to use by helping another inmate to learn to read.

By David Butcher
The first episode of a drama lays out the ground, but often it’s the second that really gets to work on the meat of things. Writer Jimmy McGovern certainly gets into his stride here. With a top-notch cast he delivers scene after scene full of quiet, crushing pain – then the occasional burst of horror for good measure.

There are nicely sketched subplots showing how minor characters ended up inside – casualties of violence or poverty or pride. But our main focus is prison officer Eric, now caught in an impossible bind: if he refuses to help the wing’s drug dealers, his son (who is doing time at another prison) could be killed. Stephen Graham gives a numb, dead-eyed performance of a man being slowly derailed.

Meanwhile, we learn more of schoolteacher Mark (Sean Bean) and how alcoholism did for him. His new cellmate is a lad he once taught, and he asks what happened. “You just get ground down,” shrugs Mark in an aside that seems to take in the whole school system, even as McGovern is taking down another system altogether.

A crown court judge referenced a hard-hitting BBC drama as he sentenced a man for stealing air pumps from his employer and flogging them on eBay for Ł10,000.

Sheffield Crown Court heard Philip Skingle had run into financial difficulties and wanted to make upgrades to his home and turned to stealing from the company he worked for.

Ernest Hill Ltd specialises in making pumps, including those for air rifles, and the 43-year-old stole more than 80 air rifle pumps to sell online.

A large portion of Judge David Dixon’s sentencing remarks was spent describing the horrific impact prison could have on a man’s life, referencing BBC drama ‘Time’.

He told Skingle: “It shows the impact of a man about your age being sent to custody. While of course fictional, Sean Bean plays a man sent to custody for a driving offence.”

Judge Dixon added that during his prison term, Bean’s character comes across a number of other individuals whose lives are wholly different with access to drugs and younger people “who do not understand life properly”.

How a Merseyside special effects expert gave Sean Bean his horrific injuries in BBC drama, Time

Quote
Anyone who’s watched Jimmy McGovern’s fantastic BBC drama Time knows that its lead character, played by Sean Bean, takes a brutal beating while he’s in prison.
And it was Merseyside special effects expert Davy Jones who was responsible for giving Sean his horrifically battered face.

Davy, who runs Davy Jones MakeupSFX based in Birkenhead, spent 10 days on set while the drama was being shot last autumn, painstakingly creating and recreating every swelling, cut and bruise.

He worked with the director and producer to come up with an injury timeline, so every stage of the attack aftermath was accurate.

Then he and his team spent up to three hours every morning applying it before Sean wore the prosthetics for daily 10-hour shoots with gruesomely realistic results.

Filming took place at an old prison in Shrewsbury and Davy joined make-up designer Janet Horsfield on set, all Covid masked up, to work on different looks.

“I met the director Lewis Arnold and the producer Simon Maloney, who I’ve worked with a lot before, and they gave us a guideline,” he explains. “So they basically said, ‘he needs to be beaten up here, then we see him again four hours later so it needs to be a bit more, then we see him in his cell and it’s really coming out, then we see it the next day, and that bruising lasts until here …’

“They work out a schedule as the injuries would progress in real life and then we take it from there.”

Davy began the process by making a cast of Sean Bean’s face so that he could then sculpt everything onto that.

“We start with the cast of his face, and once you’ve got that you rough it out in clay and send it to the director to see if they like how it looks,” says Davy, “because sometimes smaller but with more bruising can look worse than something massive with less bruising.

“The main thing is the eyes – you want to make sure that when you’ve got the make-up on you can still see that vulnerability or that fear, so you don’t want a totally closed eye.

“For that reason, we sculpted and made separate swelling moulds on the cast, a top one and a bottom one, for each of Sean’s eyes which we filled with medical grade silicone. We did two stages of swelling, and I did the rest with make-up going from red and scuffed when we first see him to deeper reds and into purples.”

Sean, who plays teacher Mark Cobden, couldn’t have been easier to work with says Davy.

“He was just fantastic. Actors can make or break a job but he was kind with his time and he was genuinely interested in what we were doing. A lot of actors do get scared of prosthetics because they feel you’re taking something away but if you get it right then they absolutely love it because they become that person because of the make-up.

“It’s about making sure it’s comfortable for an actor to wear so that in the end they forget they’ve got it on. And now the products we use are so good that we can say to people ‘don’t be scared to touch your face’ so they don’t feel as restricted with it as they used to.”

I TALK TO James Nelson-Joyce
"I was petrified that I was going to hit him. But at the same time, I didn't want to be that actor who would give Sean Bean nothing."
Quote
What was it like working with Sean Bean?

I love that man. I've got the biggest man crush on him now. He was wicked. He's just one of these people who's so gentle and vulnerable, but he's a man. We'd be sat around, talking about football and gravy and chips, just normal life things - and then all of a sudden, they say "Go!" and I have to do all this to Sean!

I remember one day I came on set and he went "Oh no. Not you again, James." - and I was just like "Sean, I'm sorry." - and he went "No, it's fine. Come here, let's have a hug." He's cool. He's great.

In terms of the violence, how much training did you get for those scenes?

We had a stunt coordinator on set, but I know how to handle myself a little bit so your footwork, your distance, how to keep someone off range - I know if I throw a jab, it's not going to land because I know where my feet are planted. Little things like that, make life so much easier.

But when it came to doing it with Sean, I was so scared. I was petrified that I was going to hit him. But at the same time, I didn't want to be that actor who would give Sean Bean nothing.

It's a fine balance. But he was great, he just said "James, do whatever you need to do. It's fine." - but I'm not going to!

The scene in episode two where Sean fights back and bites Johno's ear, what was that like to film?

It was quite physically demanding because although you're wrestling, you're wrestling to not hurt each other. It was also a long to shoot, because if you think, he bites it and then we have to go back to makeup to get everything applied.

I get my ear, Sean gets his eye done and we come back to reshoot it. It was a long day, but Lewis is so cool. He just goes "Yeah, we'll shoot from there, we'll shoot from there, just play. Just play." and he never bombards you with notes.

In the turps scene, for example, we shot that three or four times - and it's not that things get stale - but things can get a repetitive rhythm, so Lewis said "Just try something a little bit different." and I went "Yeah, OK. Cool. No worries." and you always have little things up your sleeve that you're going to try.

When I put the turps in Mark's face and say "What is it? Smell it!" - I thought, on this one I'm just going to spray it in his face and even in his mouth - and that's been kept in! Afterwards, Sean said "Did you mean to spray that in my face?" and I was like "Yeah" and he said "Keep it. I love it." - because you see the shock.

So little things like that, you've got to do on set, to keep it fresh. That's the cool thing about acting. We've got the coolest job in the world.

BBC prison drama Time has been praised for its brutal authenticity.

And the reason is because writer Jimmy McGovern was inspired by a real-life killer’s jail diaries.

The man, who uses the pseudonym Jailhouse Moose, got a life sentence for murdering his girlfriend in a drunken rage and now writes a blog.

He and McGovern met at an arts event in prison in 2019.

The inmate, originally from Ireland, said: “We talked Brookside, Cracker, Bloody Sunday, Hillsborough and Mary Queen of Scots. After a photo, Jimmy and I shook hands and I took the cheeky step of handing over a bundle of my own writing. And that was that.”

By David Butcher
Jimmy McGovern’s devastating drama ends tonight: that’s it. In three episodes it has packed a hell of a lot in – and packed a lot of hell in. But also, we’ve seen the glimmers of kindness within HMP Craigmore. One sad scene in this finale involving the gentle prison chaplain (Siobhan Finneran) may leave you in pieces.

Finneran is as good as everyone else in the smaller roles – notably Brian McCardie as the prison’s drug-dealing overlord: McCardie can say and do very little yet still be quite terrifying. It’s a gift.

His character has prison officer Eric (Stephen Graham) in his clutches and, ominously, Mark (Sean Bean) still owes him a favour. Bean is extraordinary at portraying a man who has become a walking apology, his faced etched with shame and disappointment. Around his performance and with understated dialogue, McGovern builds a moving story about the haunting power of guilt.

How BBC prison drama Time starring Sean Bean 'helped make the Government's case for a planned crackdown in jails'
Quote
Gritty prison drama Time has helped to make the Government's case for a planned crackdown in jails, justice officials believe.

The ground-breaking drama depicts the stark reality of a prisoner's struggle to cope in a jail riddled with gangs and violence.

Sean Bean stars as school teacher Mark Cobden, a drink-drive killer thrown into a world of prison corruption and relentless violence.

The drama has been hailed for its portrayal of prison life. Its final episode airs on BBC1 tonight.

Now Government officials believe the portrayal will bolster their plans for a tougher regime in jails.

The crackdown will see offenders spend more time in their cells, after male inmates said they felt safer under tougher Covid-19 curbs.

Prisoners revealed they preferred to spend more time locked up, resulting in violent incidents falling by 34 per cent in the past year.

The Government also plans to end 'unstructured associations' – letting prisoners mingle in communal areas for much of the day – in men's prisons after the fall in violence.

Offenders will still be allowed out of their cells to work, or for education and exercise.

A Ministry of Justice source said: 'For the past year we've been able to see the effects of tighter lockdowns on male prisoners. While we're not planning to introduce 23-hour lockdowns, we won't be going back to the old system – it will be somewhere in between.

'Male prisoners feel safer not associating with other dangerous offenders – understandably. Though it's just a drama, the Time series shows what life can be like.'

The measures will be imposed in all 'closed estate' Category A, B and C prisons. Open prisons will not be subject to the measures.

Women's prisons and young offenders' facilities will revert to pre-Covid measures after officials noticed a greater impact on the mental health of offenders.

A White Paper with the lockdown details and measures to reform prisons is expected later this year.

Composer Sarah Warne talks about the compositional process: “The music for Time explores the slow and painful road to redemption, the harrowing isolation of incarceration, and Mark and Eric’s united torment as they both strive to do what is right. Visceral yet sensitive performances from the score’s core ensemble, combined with off-kilter prepared piano and detuned ethereal textures, are designed to dig deep into the powerful questions at the centre of the drama.”

Quote
It's the little things that matter
So often when we look at writing we want to concentrate on the big things. On the great narrative sweeps, the themes that we’re wrestling with, the epic journeys that our protagonists are going on.

This can make it difficult to concentrate on other characters. Sometimes, when focusing on others, the protagonist’s story can suddenly fall off a cliff and we have to drag it back up again and put it back on its feet, losing all emotional momentum.

What can help are small details. They can help keep our ‘main’ story going but still let other characters’ narratives have space to be told.
This idea crossed my mind when I was watchingthe BBC prison drama ‘Time’. For those who haven’t seen it, please do. It is an excellently crafted and researched piece of writing, which is brilliantly acted to boot. I have worked at a charity that helps communicate with people in prison and the founder said it was the most accurate depiction of prison life she’d ever seen on screen.

There is one moment in ‘Time’ that I think captures the power of simple moments. It happens about half an hour into episode two. Sean Bean’s Mark Cobden is being bullied by the small-time thug Johnno, part of which includes having his food stolen. He is starving. He is, however, too proud to mention it to anyone.

At the same time, Daniel, his new cellmate, is to have a talk with his victim’s parents as an attempt to gain some closure on his crime. He asks Mark to come with him, for emotional support. This is a moment that we have been building up to for Daniel. It is a crucial point in his story and it’s importantnot to overshadow it. However, the writer of ‘Time’, Jimmy McGovern, wants to make sure that the suffering of Mark doesn’t get forgotten by the audience – tension for his character needs to be maintained; the longer we’re aware of him starving, the longer it feels he’s been starving for.

This is achieved in a brilliantly simple way. As Daniel and Mark sit at the table, the other side of which are the grieving parents, Mark looks down. On the table is a plate. A plate full of biscuits. He stares at it for a second longer than normal, and then looks away, clearly sitting on the urge not to grab several. This moment is tiny, but it is an excellent piece of character continuity that doesn’t break the flow of the scene
The impact of the moment is heightened by the performance of Bean, but it is clearly a deliberately made one. The shot of the biscuits is a cut away. We have been deliberately shown them and then Mark’s reaction, before we move on.

What I take away from this moment is that when writing for your main character one doesn’t need massive moments to keep their journey going. There doesn’t need to be great speeches or deeds, especially if there is an important secondary character we want to focus on. We can keep the protagonist’s story bubbling along on the back hob through serving tiny portions of it. Nothing big, nothing flashy, nothing that takes away from the chosen moment. But it is still there, they’re still living their story, and that keeps it alive and real for the audience watching it.  And, in the end, that is the most important thing.

Sean Bean on the making of Time, new British prison drama by Jimmy McGovern, and the gallows humour that helped cast deal with grim scenes
Quote
Forget lockdown. For Sean Bean, it’s more a case of locked up in an unsparing prison drama that confronts a British penal system failing both its inmates and the society it is supposed to protect.
Three-part series Time is a sometimes brutal – and, according to old hands, brutally authentic – look at existence behind bars. And such authenticity will be no surprise to anyone familiar with the works of its writer, Jimmy McGovern, whose “previous” includes such creations as Cracker, Broken and Accused.
Bean, a familiar face from any number of blockbuster films and television shows you might have heard of – GoldenEye, Sharpe, The Martian, Game of Thrones among them – is also a bellowing, sword-slinging salesman in a current TV advertisement that makes tea-drinking look terrifying. It plays up to his regular hard-man image and seems like perfect practice for playing a convict.

Which is where Bean subverts convention as Mark Cobden, a meek and mild teacher jailed for four years, whose life experiences thus far prove useless in coping with the career criminals and psychopaths suddenly surrounding him. Singled out for verbal and physical abuse, Cobden is intimidated and adrift. Did the character and his incarceration remain with Bean post-filming?

“Not really – I think I woke up in the middle of the night screaming about being in the hotel,” he jokes. “And a window blew out in a storm; I think I’d have been better off in the cell, because it was a bit more comfortable than the place where we were staying!

“I was OK; it was a lot of fun, actually: a load of fellas together every day and we had quite a laugh really, gallows humour, because the subject matter was so shocking and depressing and hard to stomach sometimes; we tried to keep our spirits up. We had a great bunch of lads, some great supporting actors.”

As the details of Cobden’s offence emerge he earns the respect of prison officer Eric McNally (Stephen Graham); and although their stories are largely tangential it is clear that neither belongs in a so-called correctional system to which prisoners, some with severe mental-health problems, return repeatedly.
“I didn’t find it that depressing – even though I was supposed to be depressed and scared – because we knew we could just get in the car and leave any time,” says Bean.

“And you’re so focused on what you’re doing that you don’t really have much time to think about it. We stayed in the cells with a radio and things, so I felt quite at home, but yes – you could always open the door and go out, not like the guys inside for real.”

If Time looks like it was shot in a genuinely grim Victorian penitentiary, it was: the now disused Her Majesty’s Prison Shrewsbury, whose history is peppered with executions and suicides. All of which chimes with McGovern’s trademark determination to confront life’s ugly truths.
“Jimmy’s writing is just extraordinary, he’s brilliant,” says Bean. “He knows what people are; he puts ordinary people into extraordinary situations and that’s what’s so fascinating for me. I just love his enthusiasm and the way he writes the characters. I’m blown away by his work.
“He’s a fascinating character. He comes on set now and again and he’s very well respected, of course. He’s a very ordinary guy in a sense, but an extraordinary writer.”

Along the path McGovern lays out for him, does Cobden achieve any sort of redemption?
“I think he does,” says Bean. “He’s trying; he’s open to the idea of changing his attitude. He wants to live a good life and there’s so much to be said for that. He doesn’t want to have secrets. [When convicted] his marriage was falling apart, his young lad didn’t really know what was going on and he was hardly a father figure to him.
“He believes there’s an opportunity for atonement,” he adds. “He feels as though he has a lot to offer and he knows he’s on the right track. It’s something he’s been searching for all his life.”

Time is available from August 6 on demand from BBC First, via Now TV and myTV Super.

Sean Bean And Stephen Graham Discuss Their Roles In The BBC First Drama, Time
Quote
A powerful depiction of prison life is brought to viewers’ eyes in the BBC First drama, Time. Starring Emmy and BAFTA winner Sean Bean, and four-time BAFTA nominee Stephen Graham, the drama, which premieres this August, revolves around two men on the opposite ends in prison.

Bean stars as former teacher, Mark Cobden who has been sentenced to four years for the death of an innocent man. Graham on the other hand portrays Eric McNally, a dedicated prison officer who does his best to protect those in his charge.

But this prison drama is far removed from the narratives we have seen in the past. Time expands the narrative of both prisoner and guard and the circumstances that ultimately puts the human conflict faced by both men as the show’s primary narratives.

Set within the confines of prison, the three-part series boasts an ensemble cast, headlined by Bean and Graham. The BBC First drama is authored by Emmy and three-time BAFTA-winning writer Jimmy McGovern and directed by Lewis Arnold.

For viewers, the star-studded drama serves as a test of human emotions. Bean is unflinching in his performance as a man who has to cope being in prison. Despite being put into a harsh environment, he accepts his sentence as penance.

Eric’s storyline provides a juxtaposition to the BBC First drama. When a dangerous convict threatens to hurt someone he loves, Eric is faced with an impossible choice that could pose serious ramifications for him. Unflinching but ultimately hopeful, Time is a raw study of punishment and penitence.

In this exclusive interview with the stars of the BBC First drama, we check in with Sean Bean and Steven Graham to uncover what it was like making Time.

What was the process like for you to prepare for a story like this?
Sean Bean: I made it a point to not really to prepare too much for this role, honestly. My intent was that I wanted it all to be new. I wanted it to come as a shock to me I wanted to the surroundings and the environment. The other inmates had to be new, shocking, and scary to me. So, I didn’t really want to look inside a prison or to find out too much about prison and prison life because that’s what my character, Mark goes through.

It’s all a shock to him in the first place, that he actually killed someone through drunk driving, got arrested and sentenced to four years. That serves as quite a shock. So I wanted everything from the journey from the police station to the entrance into the prison to be something shocking and alien to me, in order for it to be more authentic.

Stephen Graham:  Our wonderful director, Lewis, sent these documentaries, which was a series on prisons that aired on Channel Four, I believe. They were so profound and insightful, and they helped cover this whole gambit of stuff that happens in prisons. It’s about mental health, the bullying aspects, drug addiction, and the life of both guards and inmates. It ran parallel to our story, and what Jimmy wrote, which was so honest and true. I also spent a day with a guard at the prison. We just walked around and observed the aspects of the job that they go through.

Does Time paint an honest picture about the prison system?
Stephen: I think what’s beautiful about Jimmy as a writer is that he is political, but he’s not overtly political. He doesn’t ram his thoughts down your throat. What’s presented is up to our interpretation as audiences and our own judgement. You know there are many barbaric things about our system still I feel personally, especially when it relates to mental health.

In this story, there’s a lot of men in that prison that shouldn’t be there to be honest. They should be in those psychiatric places or in a rehabilitation facility, or in a less hostile environment, but they can’t because there’s not enough beds and not enough professionals there to help understand their problems. I think what we did, created conversations in people’s homes and made a big impact. As an actor, that’s a joy to be apart off.

It’s a peek behind the iron bars so to speak…
Sean: Yeah, because it’s all hidden away. I mean once you hear about prisoners and prisons now and again it crops up but then it’s all pushed aside, there’s another kind of news topic that filters and takes its place. But as Steven said, there’s so many problems these people face when they’re put away for a long time.

Some of them are drug addicts and the majority have mental problems resulting in them self-harming themselves and committing suicide. So, I mean, those three four things should tell you something about the standard prisons are in. As Steven said, that’s been brought up by social commentators, journalists and even politicians. It draws attention to the problem about the need to overhaul the system, but it’s mostly lip service, because not really much gets done.

Some of these inmates should be in mental facilities, which costs money, but, you know, they’re throwing everybody together. In the show, my character gets thrown into a cell with a self-harmer who is obviously deranged. He shouldn’t be in that cell, but it’s just the luck of the draw.  So I mean there’s got to be some more thought and care put into this system and how they train these guys working within the system.

With only three-episodes, do you feel the story has been told for both characters. Will there be a follow up season?
Stephen: It’s a one-off.
Sean: Yeah, it’s a standalone. You know, it’s kind of like Fawlty Towers, you know they made like 12 episodes, and we did like three (laughs). But really, you don’t want to spoil this wonderful story, by dragging it out longer than we should.

Stephen: I feel like we live in a world now where everybody wants, second, third, fourth series. Sometimes it works but sometimes it also dilutes the impact of what it is.

The BBC First drama, Time Premieres Friday, 6 August on StarHub channel 502 and BBC Player

Acclaimed prison series 'Time' soon to be seen on BBC First
Quote
The new British drama series Time will soon air on BBC First. DeLagarde reports that. The three-part prison series, starring  Stephen Graham  and  Sean Bean, scores a very nice 8.3 on IMDb and fans who have seen it begged for a second season almost immediately afterwards.
Time has been broadcast on the British television channel BBC One since June 6 and tells the story of Mark Cobden, an English teacher who ends up behind bars for a crime and has to find a way to survive. The character, played by Bean, is assisted by warden Eric McNally (Stephen Graham), who faces an impossible dilemma when he learns that other inmates have discovered his weakness. The last episode of the three-part series was broadcast on 20 June and can therefore also be viewed on BBC First, available in the Netherlands, from 1 September.

Sean Bean is alive and well and living in Somerset
British actor, famous for his on-screen deaths, plays a newly arrived inmate in the prison drama Time
Quote
No, Sean Bean does not die in the new British miniseries Time.

It’s an understandable concern, given that the English actor has developed a reputation for perishing onscreen, often in ways that are dramatic (The Lord of the Rings), gruesome (Game of Thrones) or both. But he takes the topic in his good-natured stride.

“It’s the first thing that people say: Do you die in this?” he says with a chuckle. “It’s nice to be able to say: Wait and see. It’s not something that I’ve ever been that worried about. Certainly not early on in my career, because I was playing some really bad people, very bad guys, and they kind of deserved to die. They didn’t have much of a future ahead of them.”

He continues: “Now I’d prefer not to die because I think I’ve done it that many times and there’s got to be a really good reason if I’m going to die again. I prefer to stay alive. But I’ve never really complained about it. I’m very proud of my death scenes.”

In Time, Bean stars as Mark Cobden, a high school teacher sentenced to four years in prison. “I killed a man,” he tells a fellow inmate, though we soon learn it was drunk driving and not murder.

His costar is fellow northerner Stephen Graham, who plays prison officer Eric McNally. The two have a history on the screen, having played a transvestite (Bean) and his boyfriend (Graham) in a 2012 episode of Accused, written by British screenwriter Jimmy McGovern, who also wrote Time. And Bean also starred as a Catholic priest in McGovern’s 2017 TV drama Broken.

“He’s a great writer,” says Bean. “He’s very well respected over here in the U.K., and actors want to work with him because of his skill at creating brilliant dramas. He seems to get under the skin of the characters.”

That is certainly the case with Time, which presents realistic, three-dimensional figures. Bean’s character is initially out of his depth in prison, but soon learns ways to adapt, some of them unexpected. And Graham, far from the stereotype of the sadistic prison guard, is a tough but fair-minded fellow, forced into doing something illegal after some of the inmates threaten his son, who is doing time in a different jail.

Bean says he was sold on the strength of the script. “I read it and I was just amazed at how he managed to incorporate everything that is controversial and topical … something that was so moving and so tragic and yet hopeful. It had all those ingredients.”

The setting also had an appeal for the actor. “I’ve always been quite fascinated by that aspect of life and how things occur in prison,” he says. “We all like watching dramas or documentaries about prison because we know we’re not in there. There’s a kind of macabre fascination.”

He resolutely avoided doing too much research, the better to capture the sense of confusion and dislocation as his character first arrives in prison at the beginning of the first chapter of the three-part series.

“I wanted it to be a shock and a surprise, to kind of be genuinely bewildered and confused and scared,” he says. “To be faced with that kind of mayhem and madness, that is something that I wanted to be unaware of until I actually shot the scenes. That’s what it would be like, and that’s what I wanted an audience to feel.”

Bean is speaking from his home in Somerset, having just returned from Vancouver, where he’s been working on the third season of the post-apocalyptic series Snowpiercer – in which he doesn’t die, or at least not yet.

“I play a villain in that but he’s a very charming villain,” he says. “There’s something about him that people like. And that’s the other side of the coin, whereas Mark Cobdon, I guess he’s a little bit more like me. He’s a bit of an introvert, he’s quiet, he listens to things, he takes things in. I like to play characters that are quite innocent in some sense and not tending to know everything.”

He continues: “And not necessarily loads of dialogue, but something where you can see the person that you’re playing taking in their surroundings and the emotions from other people around them, and how that affects them. Sometimes it’s good to just soak things up and react without saying a word … which is not very common these days, not very often you get writers who actually write in pauses and time to reflect. And that’s what Jimmy McGovern does.”

My time almost up, I ask Bean about his most famous role (and death) in The Lord of the Rings, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this December. Surprisingly, he lights up at the mention of it.

“I think about it most days really,” he says. “It was just something that made such an impact on me. Almost a year of my life being over there [in New Zealand] with everyone and bringing this book that I’d read as a kid to life. I’d have never dreamed that I would be playing the character of Boromir!”

The magical nature of the subject matter, he says, seemed to spill over into the production. “It felt like we were in another world … and we could just imagine and try anything and be anything we wanted to be. Such fond memories. And it certainly helped all of us in our careers, but that wasn’t really the idea. It was just being able to work with someone like Peter Jackson and all these other brilliant actors.”

He singles out Christopher Lee, who was almost 80 at the time. Lee had starred in the movie Dracula in 1958, the year before Bean was born, and the younger actor still remembers watching it as a boy. “Being terrified by him!”

When Lee died in 2015 at the age of 93, he held an interesting record, since broken by American actor Danny Trejo. He had perished more times on-screen than any other performer, with more than 60 deaths, including one as Saruman in The Lord of the Rings.

Bean, with a mere 25 deaths, is a relative lightweight. But give him time.

Time is available now on the streaming service BritBox in Canada.

Most prison shows present problems for Catholics. But ‘Time’ defies the stereotypes of the genre.
Quote
In his long career, McGovern has created a number of series that explore and celebrate the complex humanity of their characters. His 2017 series “Broken,” which focused on the struggling parishioners of a northern England Catholic parish (run by Sean Bean’s Father Michael Kerrigan), feels almost like a companion piece to “Time.” There, too, the drama lies in digging into the lived reality of people who have done terrible things and are usually then written off as “the deadbeat mom,” “the bad cop” or “the embezzler.” (“Broken” and two of McGovern’s anthology series—“The Street” and “Moving On”—are also available on BritBox.)

To watch McGovern’s work in “Time” and elsewhere is to appreciate that our own time doesn’t end with any single choice or series of choices, even the very worst ones. Neither does anyone else’s, no matter what they have done. We may lose certain things as a consequence of the things we have done, but we never lose our humanity. And the road of redemption is one we walk together.

Time is writer Jimmy McGovern’s new drama set inside the walls of a British prison, and it’s a striking look at the way the system fails so many people.
Starring Sean Bean as Mark, a guilty man trying to survive prison life alongside the worst in the system, it’s a remarkable series with a perfect cast.

‘Disgraceful neglect of Line of Duty’: the wrongs and rights of the Bafta TV nominations | Television
Quote
Bafta has various special awards at its disposal and should use one to correct the disgraceful neglect of Mercurio and Line of Duty.
With that show overlooked, the BBC should be grateful to Time, which gives the corporation its strongest presence among the drama contenders. From the extraordinary psychological and emotional duel between Sean Bean’s agonised inmate and Stephen Graham’s tortured prison warder, jurors have chosen Bean, although he may still be beaten by Graham, who makes the same shortlist for Help, the Channel 4 care home drama that gives the Covid pandemic its most direct reflection in the prizes. Confirming Graham’s status as one of the best screen actors, a place has been found for his Time performance in the supporting actor category.

It’s A Sin to Mare of Easttown: who will win the 2022 TV Bafta awards – and who really deserves to?
Quote
Leading actor
David Thewlis – Landscapers (Sky Atlantic/HBO)
 Hugh Quarshie – Stephen (ITV)
 Olly Alexander – It’s a Sin (Channel 4)
Samuel Adewunmi – You Don’t Know Me (BBC One)
Sean Bean – Time (BBC One)
Stephen Graham – Help (Channel 4)

A good example of expanded shortlists (there used to be only four names) allowing true diversity. The “next generation” case is strongly made by Olly Alexander’s gay tragic hero in It’s A Sin, against the “great generation” represented by Sean Bean as a repenting prisoner in Time, although Bean is ironically under pressure from his Time co-star, Stephen Graham, as a Covid care home patient in Help. Graham has strong acting heat around him but this probably will – and just about should – be Alexander’s.

BAFTA TV Awards: BBC Prison Drama ‘Time’ Beats Channel 4/HBO’s ‘It’s A Sin’ To Best Mini-Series
Quote
BBC One prison drama Time has beaten Channel 4/HBO’s It’s a Sin to the Best Mini-Series BAFTA TV Award.

The Stephen Graham and Sean Bean-starring three-parter featured the two leads as a prison officer and prisoner. It was bruisingly realistic and has won its leads critical acclaim, both of whom are nominated at tonight’s awards.

“Normally everyone says we weren’t expecting this but on my ma’s life we really weren’t expecting this,” said Graham, collecting the award alongside execs.

Graham said the show had a “phenomenal cast of working class men who did outstanding powerful work.”

He praised the other nominees and said “we’re all winners, this is what we do.”

The show is a surprise winner, beating Russell T Davies’ It’s a Sin, Sky’s Olivia Colman-starring Landscapers and ITV’s Stephen Lawrence drama Stephen.

BAFTA TV Awards: Sean Bean Wins Leading Actor for BBC Prison Drama ‘Time’, Beating ‘It’s A Sin’s’ Olly Alexander And Stephen Graham
Quote
BBC prison drama Time star Sean Bean has beaten It’s A Sin lead Olly Alexander and his Time co-star Stephen Graham to the coveted Leading Actor award at tonight’s BAFTA TV Awards.

The award was presented by IT Crowd star Katherine Parkinson and saw Bean also beat off competition from Sky’s Landscapers’ David Thewlis, ITV’s Stephen’s Hugh Quarshie, You Don’t Know Me’s Samuel Adewunmi and Help star Stephen Graham, who featured opposite Bean in Time.

A speech was read out on Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings star Bean’s behalf, thanking the creators and Graham, “without whose passion I wouldn’t be receiving this tonight.”

Bean was away filming and couldn’t attend the ceremony.

The gong is his second BAFTA, having won Leading Actor for the BBC’s Broken in 2017.

This was tough for me. I have never had something like this happen. Michael Keaton (my second favourite actor) was phenomenal in Dopesick... It was cool to see them in the same category. My dream is to see them share the screen one day... Won't happen, but a man can dream....

Anyway, I voted for Bean and Time.

Sean Bean, Stephen Graham Discuss Shooting Britbox’s ‘Time’ in a Real-Life Prison

In the BBC drama “Time,” Sean Bean plays Mark, a former teacher struggling to adapt to prison after being sentenced for four years for manslaughter. During a conversation with Variety, Bean talked about getting into character to play a man tormented by his mistakes.

“He’s killed someone, but he’s actually a much, much better man for it,” Bean told Variety. “And I think that’s what Jimmy [McGovern] manages to get across, is that we have to go through so much pain and anguish and shock and sadness in our lives in order to come out a better person. And that’s quite heroic in some sense.”

Graham, who plays prison guard Eric, shared during the panel that he was a long-time fan of Bean from the 1993 ITV series “Sharpe.” Graham described Bean as a role model for him in some ways, as another actor from a working class background.

“To be able to share the screen with him and be a part of something that he’s in and collaborate together, for me … it has just always been an absolute gift to work with Sean,” Graham said. “And I really hope Jimmy’s got another one, maybe not for a couple of years or whatever. But I hope he’s got another one in the bag there for me and Sean to do later on down the line. You know what I mean? Before he throws the towel in. I’d love that.”

Prison drama 'Time' with Stephen Graham and Sean Bean comes to the NPO
Quote
The BBC's new British drama series Time will be added to NPO Plus' offerings on July 6.
For a long time, despite his favorable reviews and top rating, nothing was known about a deal with a Dutch provider. It was then already in line with the expectation that the series would eventually find its way to our cold little country.

NPO Plus subscribers can watch the series from 6 July. If you want to watch TV every week, you will have to wait a little longer. The NPO 2 will broadcast the series from September 30.

It was disappointing to see that Sean Bean, and Time in general, was completely absent from the International Emmy nominations.
Oh well. I must not understand the qualifications because Narcos: Mexico was nominated here but not for Prime Time.
