Nicola Walker and Sean Bean to lead BBC relationship drama Marriage
The BBC is bringing in the big guns for its latest drama, Marriage. The upcoming four-part series from two-time Bafta-winning writer and director Stefan Golaszewski, whose work you may know from Mum and Him and Her, features an A-list cast led by Nicola Walker (Unforgotten) and Sean Bean (Game of Thrones).
The synopsis for the show teases: “Marriage sees married couple Ian (Bean) and Emma (Walker) negotiate the ups and downs of their 30-year marriage. We see them dealing with the insecurities, the ambiguities, the hopes and the fears that are part of all marriages as the drama explores the risks and the gifts of a long-term intimate relationship.”
As for when Marriage will air, filming is about to begin so we do not expect it to hit our screens any earlier than the summer of 2022.

For all you film buffs. These 2 are filming in the Old Town Tomorow - a new BBC drama called The Marriage - sounds very good!
The big car park at the back of the old Town will be free all day during this filming as some spaces and bays in the High St will be reserved for the filming crew.

BBC film crews for new Sean Bean drama take over Hemel Hempstead Old Town
Filming has begun for a brand new BBC drama starring Sean Bean and Nicola Walker - and crews have chosen a Hertfordshire location for some of the shoots.
The BBC has pulled out all the stops for the new show, which comes from two-time Bafta-winning writer and director Stefan Golaszewski.
Film crews were out today in Hemel Hempstead Old Town filming with Nicola wandering around the high street (Thursday, October 7).
According to the show's synopsis: “Marriage sees married couple Ian (Bean) and Emma (Walker) negotiate the ups and downs of their 30-year marriage.
"We see them dealing with the insecurities, the ambiguities, the hopes and the fears that are part of all marriages as the drama explores the risks and the gifts of a long-term intimate relationship.”
Filming today however was strictly prohibited due to confidentiality but the high street was still open to the public with shops, bars and restaurants all open for business.
One business owner, Michelle Elliott, owner of The House Of Elliott spoke of the impact all of the filming has had on her business.
She said: "There's pros and cons with it, it's exciting for the high street to have these actors and nice films but it's also quite disruptive for businesses."
The film crew are only expected to be in the town for one day but even by the afternoon they had been on site for five hours - Michelle even thinks it will go on late into the night.

Sean Bean and Nicola Walker put on a very animated display on the set of the new BBC drama Marriage on Wednesday.
The Game Of Thrones star, 62, appeared to flick between emotions during filming - at one point seeming as though he was screaming, and the next smiling next to his co-star Nicola, as they take on the role of a husband and wife.
Filming has already begun for the series, although details of when it will air have not yet been released.
The series is believed to air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer soon.

Nicola Walker has her head in her hands. I’ve just asked whether she considers herself a mainstay of British television, which she takes to mean that she’s “finished”. “That sounds awful,” she says. “That sounds like I’m not going to work again!”.
It seems unlikely. In the past two decades, Walker has delivered performances steeped in heart and humanity, creating characters who feel so real that viewers cannot help but invest in them: there was gifted MI5 intelligence analyst Ruth Evershed in Spookswhose tender slow-burn romance with her boss had fans enraptured, and headstrong but chaotic farmer Gillian in Last Tango in Halifax, as loveable as she is a liability. Queen of the flickering facial expression, Walker is masterful at conveying nuance in tiny brushstrokes.
Indeed, she appears to have swapped murder for monogamy wholesale: later this year she will star opposite Sean Bean in the BBC drama Marriage exploring “the minutiae” of a relationship because, she says, in real life, “the drama happens while you’re boiling the kettle”.

The new BBC drama was filmed at The Foundry on the former Dacorum campus of West Herts College.
Fees from a new BBC drama starring Sean Bean that was filmed in Hemel Hempstead will be donated to homelessness charities.
Bellway’s The Foundry in Hemel Hempstead has donated its filming fees to charity after the BBC used its location to film scenes for a new drama series.
Donations of £500 were made to Herts Young Homeless and Emmaus Hertfordshire after the BBC filmed at Bellway’s North London’s development for an upcoming series.
The new show, Marriage, will feature Game of Thrones’ Sean Bean and Unforgotten star Nicola Walker.
Money will also be given to Bellway’s national charity partner Cancer Research UK.
Zoe Dobbs, sales manager for Bellway North London, said: “We were delighted to welcome the BBC to our development and even more delighted that we can use the filming fee to help those in need within the county of Hertfordshire where we’re building new homes.”

The BBC has released the first trailer for four-part drama Marriage, teasing Nicola Walker and Sean Bean as a long-time couple approaching their 27th wedding anniversary and confirming the show's August release date.

With Mum and Him & Her, Stefan Golaszewski took the sitcom to new heights. Now he’s stepping into drama – with a series about ‘messy, tricky, glorious’ wedded bliss, starring Sean Bean and Nicola Walker
‘Baftas are essentially baubles,” says Stefan Golaszewski. “They’re very nice to have, but not central to what I do.” The multi-award-winning sitcom writer is speaking ahead of the launch of his new series, Marriage, which proved more of a challenge to write than he was prepared for. Yes, Golaszewski wrought three series of phenomenally wry television from Lesley Manville in Mum. True, he created Him & Her’s four hilariously toilet humour-packed seasons about a slacker couple, played by Russell Tovey and Sarah Solemani. But as he sat down to write Marriage, he couldn’t help feeling he was getting it wrong.
“There was something about my writing I wasn’t happy about – something stopping me achieving what I wanted,” says Golaszewski. “So after Mum, I took time out to reteach myself how to write.” His realisation? There’s a fundamental lack of honesty in making people chuckle. “When you write a comedy,” he says, “the dialogue is sherbet: it fizzes in the moment and then it’s gone. The point of the words is to make people laugh. But I was interested in using dialogue to seek a deeper truth. When you write a comedy, there’s a ceiling on your ability to be truthful – and for me, being truthful is the key.”
Hence Marriage: Golaszewski’s move into hour-long drama. The four-part series is an up-close look at a 27-year-long relationship, which is packed full of impeccably observed detail about how couples behave in long-term relationships. Entire scenes consist of loading a dishwasher, or talking about their ant problem. One sequence sees Sean Bean’s Ian waiting at the foot of the stairs for his wife to return from the toilet. “How’s your tummy?” he asks. “Lot of gas?” Nicola Walker, who plays his spouse Emma, replies: “I thought I was going to take off!” They guffaw, then trot off to do some house admin.
“Fart gags are probably the bedrock of a successful relationship, because it’s an honesty,” says Golaszewski. “My wife can’t believe how soon I farted in front of her when we got together. I’m a human – we all fart!”
Writing a drama might be a stylistic departure for someone more familiar with twitching the nation’s lips with cringe-comedy, but there’s one thing that’s undeniably unchanged in Marriage – a love of relationships. Him & Her showed a fledgling twentysomething romance, Mum charted how you move past the end of a lifelong bond and into widowhood, while Golaszewski’s latest project is a paean to midlife. It could be the final part of a trilogy chronicling the lifespan of a couple.
“God, I wouldn’t be self-important enough to evoke a trilogy!” says Golaszewski. “I was just interested in the beauty of marriage, which is so often considered mundane – or depicted as less exciting than having an affair. I think there’s more hope and joy in a lot of marriages than is often seen. But I am running out of road – I need to write about something other than relationships!”
One of the most remarkable things about Marriage’s script is how little there is of it. Despite Bean having said that “there are really few words in this”, it’s still surprising quite how many scenes are dialogue-free. Sometimes we see the cosy wordlessness of sprawling on a sofa with a bag of prawn crackers. At other points we watch Walker and Bean’s characters go about their lives in almost mundane wordlessness: decluttering a bedroom or clearing up a dinner party. They stretch out until, at one point, one of them bursts into tears – followed by more silence.
The series chronicles Bean’s character’s redundancy and how the strength of his marriage helps him through it. But the episodes aren’t driven by obvious storytelling. At times, it feels more like an immersive on-screen experience than typical TV drama. Is it daunting that it’s airing on BBC One?
“Oh yeah! It’ll be interesting to see what happens, but I hope people understand all the silences as a reflection of life,” says Golaszewski. “I’ve said from the beginning that this isn’t about the plot, but I do hope it has a similar grip or compulsion to one of those very plotty shows. My shows are full of story but I deprioritise plot – in plot-driven shows, humanity, character, speech, emotion and behaviour only have value in terms of their usefulness to the plot. I want to celebrate the human experience for the messy, tricky, glorious thing it is.”
That focus on creating TV that’s as human as possible makes for thrilling performances – particularly from Bean. He’s a big, comfy jumper of a man, stretched out of shape over many years. He weeps, he’s needy, he’s desperate for a cuddle from his wife after a tough day, and uses the time she’s not there to track down “revitalising shower gel” because he “needs that little boost”. Alongside Peter Mullan – whose heart-meltingly tender performance as Michael in Mum belies his ability to play a terrifying monster in Ozark – he’s the latest actor to show a softer side in a Golaszewski-penned BBC show. Is turning hardmen into cutie pies something the writer relishes?
“You know what?” says Golaszewski. “They are actually like that. Peter is more like Michael in Mum than the guy in Ozark. He’s much more likely to make you a cup of tea than sell you heroin. Sean’s the same – he’s incredibly gentle and thoughtful. You meet him and you don’t know what he’s going to be like, because he’s Sean Bean off the telly – but there’s a real warmth and kindness to him.”
It’s not just actors’ rarely shown sides that Golaszewski is keen to put on screen but the entire class system. The worlds he writes are lower middle class, with their roots in the working class, partly because that’s his background, but also because it’s the world of the majority of the nation – which makes it the most truthful thing he can put on television, despite how rarely dramatists depict it. “It’s often hard in TV, because people are relatively posh. When I tell them how I want to build sets, they’re like: ‘Do people actually live like this?’” He laughs. “I’m like: ‘Do you want to meet my family?’”
In a way, he owes his career to his attempt to rail against the rich. As a Cambridge University student, he became president of their comedy troupe Footlights, having turned up to their auditions with the most offensive monologue he could think of to try to horrify them – only for them to burst out laughing. “I was very angry at university,” he says. “I was sort of racist about posh people.” It spawned the comedy troupe Cowards, whose members included Tim Key and Tom Basden (After Life); they went on to create two Radio Four and one BBC Four sketch series.
It also made him a contemporary of people such as Alex Horne and Mark Watson, as well as Boris Johnson cabinet members whom he’s surprisingly diplomatic about – despite not associating with them at the time. “I guess Suella Braverman’s worked hard,” he says. “I don’t know anything about her, but it can’t be easy to be a woman from an ethnic minority entering the Tory party.”
This is exactly the approach you’d expect from someone who has said in the past that his shows have “no baddies”. Even the most unlikable characters in Mum and Him & Her got a chance to show the vulnerabilities that made you sympathise with their awfulness. But in Marriage, it’s a little greyer. We see an exploitative male company owner sexually preying on a teenage female intern. The boyfriend of Bean and Walker’s on-screen daughter Jessica aggressively gaslights her. While the script does try to show the trauma beneath their abusive behaviour, it’s hard not to feel that you’re witnessing a newfound darkness to Golaszewski’s writing. Although for him, these are plotlines that deal with one thing: truth. “People do have dark lives, and terrible things happen to them. Then they have to keep on living. These are the kinds of themes a comedy can’t handle.”
As Marriage prepares to air, Golaszewski is revelling in his newfound freedom to create the most honest portrayal of real life he can. “In tiny moments,” he says, “there’s an enormity of human life. If you look for it, you see it everywhere. It’s in every tiny detail of how people stand, of how people intonate their words, in the way they speak to each other. The world is full of people trying their best, sometimes getting it wrong, sometimes right, but just generally trying their hardest.” What a lovely thought. No wonder he chose to give up comedy writing for it.

Casting Nicola and Sean was great as I was able to rewrite the scripts with them in mind and strip away as much dialogue as I could, knowing I had two amazing actors who could do all that for me, which I prefer. I like having as few words as possible for a scene.

Hi Sean, tell us about Marriage.
Marriage only takes place over 12 days or so. It’s an extract of that time in their lives and you drop in to watch their lives. However, what is in those days is rich, revealing and you see what a relationship is... what a marriage is. Their doubts, fears, joy, happiness and heartbreak that go into everyday living.
What struck you about the script?
Stefan’s dialogue is very natural and free flowing. It doesn’t seem like that sometimes when you are doing it. I guess we all jump to conclusions about how we perceive delivery of the lines, and sometimes you go for the easiest option, but Stefan breaks it up and doesn’t allow it to just become one-dimensional thought. There’s a lot happening in between various sentences and statements we make which is hard to get your head around, but makes it very varied and rich.
He also throws in a lot of business: props, opening and shutting bins, getting tissue paper out at the same time as you are talking, which is something you have to get used to. However it’s very well observed and quite hard work to get your head around, even though it’s very naturalistic and free flowing. There’s so many different layers he has created within his script.
Tell us about the situation with Jamie, Emma’s colleague?
Ian is a man who isn’t very sure of himself and not very confident. He used to be when he had a job and was in a relatively a high up position. He was a moderator at his firm, but that’s gone and he’s recently lost his mother. Emma is working and going places. Then there’s a younger man on the scene [Jamie] so when you add them all together, he’s quite suspicious. Ian is a very vulnerable and unsettled man and lots of little things begin to stir up into a big pot of worry!
Tell us about working with Stefan.
Stefan is very communicative. He has lived with this project for so long that he knows what he wants from us, it’s a matter of getting on his wavelength. I’ve never really thought this much about what I say or do, but in this I feel very grateful to be able to have that opportunity. It’s not method acting, but you really do think about how you are doing a scene. You have to be so truthful in the portrayal to bring out all the feelings and emotions that Stefan has put in.
What’s it been like working with Nicola?
It’s been a real pleasure for me working with Nicola, and I know everyone says that, but it really has.
Why should people watch Marriage?
People will be able to see many things that they can relate to in their own lives and their own relationships. There aren’t any big stunts or reveals, it’s just a very simple story, simply told, about people and the complications of daily life.

Marriage: Sean Bean believes people will relate to the ‘complication of daily life’ in BBC drama
Sean Bean reckons everyone will take something away from his upcoming BBC drama, Marriage, alongside Nicola Walker.
The four-part show written and directed by Him and Her’s Stefan Golaszewski, follows Ian and Emma, played by Sean and Nicola, as they navigate the ups and downs of their near 30-year relationship.
Marriage begins on Sunday night, and speaking to PA News ahead of the release date, Sean explained why he thinks the audience will relate to the story.
He said: “People will be able to see many things that they can relate to in their own lives and their own relationships.
"There aren't any big stunts or reveals, it's just a very simple story; simply told, about people and the complications of daily life."
Sean described Ian as “unsure of himself and not very confident” after losing his job and following the death of his mother.
Meanwhile, wife Emma is “going places”, and when a younger man comes into the picture, it makes Ian “very vulnerable.”
On working with writer Stefan for the intimate series, Sean added: “There's a lot happening in between various sentences and statements we make which is hard to get your head around but makes it very varied and rich.

Sean Bean's brand-new BBC series Marriage sees him paired up with Nicola Walker, as the drama charts a married couple's daily life over a period of a few days.
For fans of Bean, whose roles have included Ned Stark in Game of Thrones and Joseph Wilford in Snowpiercer, they may be expecting some high drama or serious twists from the new show – however, Bean has suggested they should realign their expectations.

The series comes from writer Stefan Golaszewski, and fans of his other series Mum and Him & Her will likely recognise the creator's naturalistic style in what Bean describes.
Bean also went on to note that the series "only takes place over 12 days or so" and that "it’s an extract of that time" in his character Ian and Walker's character Emma's lives.
He continued: "However, what is in those days is rich, revealing and you see what a relationship is... what a marriage is. Their doubts, fears, joy, happiness and heartbreak that go into everyday living."
Marriage will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Sunday 14th August at 9pm.

Airport departure lounges, those bastions of stress, discomfort and boredom, have been responsible for many a marital squabble. The opening scene of new comedy drama Marriage conveys this universal truth with a bizarre row over jacket potatoes between its two main players while they wait to board their plane home from a holiday in Spain.
As the couple, Ian and Emma, bitterly shout and swear at each other it’s clear that the row over spuds is masking something deeper, yet it’s punctuated by the tender looks that only a 30-year marriage can induce. And in the hands of two of our finest actors, Sean Bean and Nicola Walker, this strained yet affectionate relationship is compellingly believable.
Marriage is the latest series from Stefan Golaszewski, who’s aiming to repeat the success of his bittersweet, award-winning comedies Mum and Him & Her with this four-parter for BBC1. He says he’s tried to make the first drama that shows what marriage is really like, as opposed to the sanitised television version of it we’re usually fed.
‘When people get married they make a completely impossible pledge to be together happily for the rest of their lives,’ says Stefan. ‘No one can do that, yet everyone tries, and that’s what makes it a beautiful thing.
‘You spend all day every day trying to make this thing work that really shouldn’t. It’s impossible to live happily with one person for the rest of your life, but you try it because you love each other and it’s worth trying for.’
He believes that in some ways the series complements his other two. ‘The reason the stuff I write tends to be funny or ironic is a reflection of the fact that the world is fundamentally ridiculous and everything in it is pointless.
‘The only thing that isn’t is love, and the connection between people. If I think about it, that’s probably the thing that links everything I’ve written, there’s a central focus on seeking togetherness.’
All of his shows focus on the seemingly mundane, yet he manages to find drama in it. When we meet Ian and Emma they’re at a pivotal point in their lives.
Ian’s beloved mother has recently died and he’s just been made redundant. He’s lost. Emma meanwhile is struggling to cope with her demanding father (played brilliantly by James Bolam) while pursuing her ambitions at work.
Then there’s their adopted daughter Jessica (Chantelle Alle), who has a horrendously controlling new boyfriend.
The British habit of not saying things that need to be said hangs heavy in the air throughout. Every pause and stumble comes from Stefan’s script.
‘I like having as few words as possible in a scene,’ he says. ‘Casting Nicola and Sean was great as I was able to rewrite the scripts and strip away as much dialogue as I could, knowing I had two actors who could convey everything for me.

‘I’m very specific on the script. It’s important for this kind of writing that what we film is what I want, down to every ‘err’ or ‘yeah’.
‘When the plotlines are as minimal as these are and based on such tiny shifts in emotion or mood, you have to have absolutely pinpoint tools to tell that story.’
Sean relished the chance to work with such a different kind of script. ‘Stefan’s dialogue is very natural and free-flowing, but it doesn’t seem like that sometimes when you’re saying it,’ he admits.
‘There’s a lot happening between the sentences, which is hard to get your head around, but it makes the dialogue rich. He throws in a lot of other bits – opening and shutting bins, getting a tissue out while you’re talking – which is something you have to get used to.’
Nicola agrees that forensically exploring the details of a mundane life can be exhausting to film.
‘There are times we’ve laughed off-camera as I’ve made about 30 sandwiches and boiled the kettle 28 times to shoot one scene, but they’re simple actions you do every day,’ she says. ‘It’s all in the detail, it’s very revealing.’

Sometimes the details could be pretty personal. ‘My most memorable scene was applying cream to Sean’s thigh area,’ laughs Nicola.
‘It was a beautiful moment, and one I never expected, but Ian had a nasty rash. It was a tremendous day in my professional career! Luckily it was in a tasteful place.’
The action takes place during the two-week period after Ian and Emma get back from their holiday. While Ian seems stuck in a rut, Emma is invited to a work conference with her boss Jamie (Henry Lloyd-Hughes), something Ian’s uncomfortable with.
‘It’s a moment in time and you drop in to watch their lives,’ says Sean. ‘You see what a relationship is, what a marriage is, the doubts, fears, joys, happiness and heartbreak that go into everyday living.’
There may well be a lot of squirming on sofas when the show turns a mirror on the mundanity of marriages up and down the country tomorrow night.

Anticipation levels for the series premiere of Marriage had been sky high heading into Sunday’s debut on BBC One. Following the story of Ian (played by Sean Bean) and Emma (Nicola Walker), the drama explores how one husband and wife’s long-lasting marriage faces the strain of differing life paths. However, just minutes into the opener, it seemed fans all had one similar complaint about the episode.
While the opening scene set the stage for Ian and Emma’s turbulent albeit monotonous marriage perfectly, fans weren’t impressed.
However, it wasn’t down to the former Unforgotten and Game of Thrones stars' performance, but rather the sound quality of the episode.
Taking to social media, a number of fans branded the series “inaudible” and admitted they were having trouble following the plot due to the sound quality.
Julie Whitehouse said on Twitter: “Straight away I’m having to put subtitles on, why do so many dramas have poor sound or mumbling actors? Maybe it’s just me #marriage.”
And @SandJRobinson agreed: “Watching #marriage on BBC1 & although we’ve turned our TV right up, we still can’t hear a bloody word they’re saying other channels are fine.”

The actor discussed how new drama Marriage breaks traditional formulas.
Understated BBC drama Marriage gives viewers a glimpse into Ian (Sean Bean) and Emma's (Nicola Walker) life over the course of four episodes. The couple have been married for 30 years, and when we first meet them they are returning to the UK from a trip to Spain to celebrate their anniversary.
Despite bickering about chips and discussing dodgy tummies, the show soon delves into much murkier emotional territory, underpinned by Bean and Walker's performances. The fact it doesn't follow a traditional structure is precisely what Bean considers its strength.
Speaking to RadioTimes.com and other press during a Q&A, the Game of Thrones actor praised writer/director Stefan Golaszewski for being "brave", before explaining why he's "bored" of detective dramas.
"He [Stefan Golaszewski] broke the formula [with Marriage]," Bean explained. "And this pedestrianised way of looking at drama – there’s going to be a beginning, a middle and an end, there’s going to be some stakes, a bit of action, there's going to be this and that – is so boring.
"I’m so bored of watching a lot of programmes these days, especially about detectives. I don’t like people who have always stuck with that, watching stories about police detectives, because all the characters end up repeating themselves, and telling the next guy what just happened. And I hate reading detective novels as well."
Walker, who played DCI Cassie Stuart in Unforgotten for four seasons, was also at the Q&A, and laughed alongside Bean, who added: "It’s the same old kind of structure. And when I watched this [Marriage] I was quite shocked, that pattern. I thought, ‘Yeah, that’s right, it doesn’t necessarily follow on in life. You might be alright one day and you might be a right miserable t**t the next if you don't know what's happened in those 24 hours in between.
"This drama just dips in at a moment in time, in two or three weeks in these people's lives. You could drop in another time, in another three years, or another 14 years, and you'd probably have a totally different story...I just hope people don't get comfortable watching [Marriage]."

Marriage viewers were impressed with the conclusion of the BBC drama and have enjoyed the rollercoaster of emotions!
Marriage came to an end this week and fans are mostly satisfied with the conclusion to the Sean Bean and Nicola Walker-fronted drama, with many praising the performances and overall story.
For the past few weeks, fans have had plenty to say about Marriage including this hilarious complaint and claims people are "missing the point", but the finale has seen an outpouring of praise from TV fans.
Stefan Golaszewski's latest BBC series follows Emma and Ian, a couple who have been married for 27 years, and documents all the ups and downs that come from a long-term partnership including parenting, job stresses, intimacy, and more, with the story feeling raw and relatable for many viewers.
Throughout the course of the four-part series, Emma and Ian have juggled a lot, including the latter coming to terms with his recent redundancy and a difficult job search, while Emma's career seems to be going great. It's a slow-paced drama but fans have loved following the couple's day-to-day lives as they deal with a number of roadblocks.
In the series finale, their daughter Jessica (Chantelle Alle) moves out of the home she shares with her boyfriend Adam, much to Ian and Emma's relief as they really didn't like him. While Ian helps pack up her stuff, Adam attempts to make small talk by berating women, and Ian tells him to "grow up", finally getting to tell him exactly what he thinks of him.
Meanwhile, Ian opens up to Jessica about adopting her and shows her the letter he wrote to her as a baby, finally having a conversation it's clear they've never had before. As well as this, truths are revealed about the couple's deceased son Nicholas, and the episode is filled with bittersweet moments.
Because of the emotional rollercoaster and a conclusion which unites the family, seeing Jessica back with her parents, fans have taken to Twitter to have their say on the ending with many calling it "beautiful".
It's not yet known if Marriage will return for a second season, as things seem to have been wrapped up quite nicely for viewers who have followed Ian and Emma on their everyday journey. But if that changes, we'll let you know!

Or Together, which intimately documented a couple having to cope with the mundanity of life during lockdown while also facing a terrifying global pandemic. There are even examples without Sharon Horgan in them – in Normal People, it was the all-too-relatable unspoken tension between young students Marianne and Connell that gripped the nation.
But, so far, no UK series has drawn on what is arguably the most obvious context for realism: an everyday couple, 27 long and eventful years after they first said “I do”.
Marriage, created, written and directed by Stefan Golaszewski, whose credits include the RTS-award winning Mum, and produced by The Forge, aims to change that in the most compelling of ways.
The series follows the subtle interplay over the course of a few days as Ian, played by Sean Bean (twice an RTS acting award winner, for The Accused and Time), is made redundant from his job just as the career of his wife, Emma, played by Nicola Walker (The Split, Unforgotten), gains momentum.
“The format of drama now means that something has to happen at a certain point in each episode every week,” Walker pointed out at a recent RTS event, where she was joined by Golaszewski and Bean.

“When I read these scripts, I thought, ‘here’s Stefan rejecting that pattern and writing about these two people in the most honest way’. Awful things have happened to them in their 27-year marriage. That isn’t where we meet them, but you do see the effect that has realistically in a long-term loving relationship. It’s both difficult and joyful. A lot of the time, it’s just life lived. I have not seen that on television before.”
Bean agreed. “It was like nothing I’d ever read before, and I always like something that’s different. You read a lot of scripts, and some of them are very good scripts, but they don’t have that amount of detail or description or subtlety.”
Given the volume of screen hours dedicated to couples, it seemed strange to Golaszewski that, until now, long-term marriages were only depicted in a heightened way that was out of sync with our experience.
“Often, you find in fiction that marriages are things that people are desperate to get out of, or terribly sad in. People seem to be keen to cheat quite a lot,” he said. “Yet, when you look around, you see all these people just trying their best, and finding things hard and getting things wrong, but acting out of hope rather than malice. I wanted to tell that story.”
You’d never guess it from Walker and Bean’s effortless chemistry on-screen, but Marriage is the first time the pair have worked together. It helped their dynamic, said Walker, that they were given a full week of rehearsals before cameras rolled, “which is unheard of now. I remember doing it when I first started acting, when I was 22, but that has long since become a thing of the past. So, that was incredibly helpful.”
Recalling the rehearsal week, Bean added: “We clicked pretty quickly, and we got to know each other, but we were very focused on our work. It felt natural and we had a wonderful chemistry.”
It was at this point of the process that the characters were fleshed out in full. For example, with Bean’s input, they decided on Ian’s former job. “I never write biographies,” explained Golaszewski. “I’ve often been told in the past to write down what the characters like. I don’t like doing that either, because you meet someone one day and they’ve changed the next because of what’s happened to them in the intervening period. Pinning someone down with some adjectives isn’t very truthful. You end up blocking the actors in as well, because it is they who bring the life to it.”
While perhaps not intended at the time of conception, the relatability of the four-part series to its audience has increased as redundancy becomes a growing threat.
“I guess a lot of people these days are facing that, especially people in their fifties and sixties who are still competent and able-bodied but for some reason, maybe it’s technology, lose their jobs,” said Bean. “You leave Friday night and that’s it, it’s all gone. You have to cope with filling up 24 hours a day and feeling as though you’re getting in the way in the house and getting under the wife’s feet.”
Equally, the work ethic rarely disappears with the work. “Ian goes into the garden a lot, he goes into his shed, starts painting things, hoovering, killing ants, stuff like that. Worthy things that are necessary for a man to do.”
And, as Emma finds work opportunities opening up, “he feels as though he can’t speak to her because she’s always too busy now, and he doesn’t want to spoil that dream for her because he loves her. He’s happy for her but, at the same time, he’s quite jealous.”
For Walker, playing Emma at an important time in her career was another example of the realism involved. “The different personalities we are with different people is brilliantly illustrated with Emma,” she said. “The Emma that we see at work is a completely different woman to the Emma at home and the Emma with her dad. It’s [about] playing a fully rounded individual, because she has lots of different faces.”

Personalities and the interplays between them have already proved to be a strength of Golaszewski’s, as demonstrated in his sitcoms Him & Her (starring Russell Tovey and Sarah Solemani) and Mum, which also won an RTS award for lead actor Lesley Manville. But after their successes, he pressed pause and reconsidered the art of television writing. His conclusion? Dramas today are restricted from showing real-life interactions because of their emphasis on plot and structure.
Instead, Marriage sought to put the truthful relationships between characters at the core of the show, and use plot as a device, rather than the other way around.
Walker highlighted an example in a scene where Ian seems to have made a little headway in his sensitive relationship with daughter Jessica: “There’s a moment when Ian makes a joke, and it’s received really well by his daughter. Normally, in drama, that’s your end point – that the father who’s found it difficult to speak to his daughter cracks a joke, and everything’s better. A great example of what Stefan does [is that] he has Ian say the joke again because the joke has gone well. It’s so painful. I’ve seen members of my family do that at family dinners.”
Marriage shows how a relationship is more than the sum of its parts.
“When I was writing the sitcoms, people seemed to be interested that it was funny one minute and sad the next,” said Golaszewski. “But, if you’re just doing your best to tell the truth, sometimes that will emanate as funny and sometimes it will emanate as sad. Sometimes, it will emanate as something enormous and sometimes as Ian moving Emma’s shoes yet again. Those are the little bits of detritus that our lives are built of.”

Though many fans are likely still grieving Nicola Walker's exit from the popular mystery series Unforgotten, the actress hasn't been a stranger on PBS programs in the months since her departure, thanks to her starring role in Annika. Now, she's got another new drama heading our way, and PBS Passport members will get the chance to see it well before it airs.
Four-part series Marriage is described as a romantic drama that explores offers an up-close portrait of a 30-year relationship -- sometimes funny, sometimes moving, and always revealing. Walker stars as Emma opposite recent BAFTA winner Sean Bean (Time) as her husband Ian, who will both be seen dealing with the insecurities, ambiguities, hopes, and fears that are all part of being in an intimate relationship with the same person for many years.
The drama is set to arrive on PBS Passport this Spring, as part of a bevy of new exclusive and early arrivals available to local station members in the coming months. (See also: DI Ray and Before We Die Season 2, which will both stream before they air on linear broadcast.) There's no word on when we might expect to see Marriage on our television screens -- these early binges have had from weeks to months of lead time depending on the property -- but with a cast this high caliber, it's hard to believe this drama won't come to the small screen at some point in the not so distant future.

Relationship Drama 'Marriage' to Air on PBS Stations This Fall
Though it appears that while Sean Bean (Time) won't be part of World on Fire when the period drama returns for its second season later this year, fans of the BAFTA winner will still be able to catch him on PBS this Fall. He's starring opposite perennial public television favorite Nicola Walker (Annika) in the relationship drama Marriage, which some of you may have seen when it premiered on PBS Passport earlier this year, but which will finally arrive on PBS in October.
Set over a two-week timeframe, the four-part series explores an intimate portrait of a 30-year relationship --- sometimes funny, sometimes moving, and always revealing. It stars Sean Bean (Time) and Nicola Walker (Annika) as central couple Ian and Emma and follows the pair as they negotiate the insecurities, ambiguities, hopes and fears that are all part of being intimately connected to the same person for so many years.
Although PBS Passport members have been able to stream Marriage since May, you might need to do a little extra research to determine when it’ll be premiering in your area, because the answer might depend on where you live. In theory, Marriage is set to debut on October 5, but many PBS stations have established programming blocks or theme nights on Thursdays and will likely shift the program around their schedules accordingly. What I’m saying is, even more so than usual, please check your local listings to find out the broadcast plans in your area.
