I think every city has his "personal enemy": I was involved in the battle Hannover vs Braunschweig (Brunswick). If you are married to someone from Hannover you aren't allowed to travel to or mention Braunschweig. It's an old war too.

We tend to divide up over regions (North/South; East/West' Midwest/everyone else); by state (too many to name); by city (San Francisco vs LA; New York vs Chicago; etc).

People say America exists because it's a 'melting pot' - sometimes, I think it exists because it's so big that people in different places can pretend they are autonomous . . .

I dislike 'othering' but it's human nature to define oneself against someone else - much easier to say 'we are NOT like THEM' than to say 'we are essentially the same' . . .

It is really just 'friendly' county rivalry.....But imagine my horror when on the geneology quest to find a branch of my family came from Derbyshire..............I dare not tell my son who is an ardent Nottingham Forest fan....lol. and worse still they descended from southerners.

Hey! I thought we were getting on quite well, despite the fact that I would need a passport to come and see you......however we are united as Southerners - past the Watford Gap (a service station on the MI) it's all wild XB country.....ask yourself, why does SB live in London?
