I know a few people in England who brew their own beer. I don't know if you can still get them, but there was a time when you could get DIY beer brewing kits at Boots. Exbill will know. And yes, I can see our boy doing that. Pottering in the garden and brewing in the shed. Why not?

Yes the kits are still widely available through my employers . It is still quite a popular hobby in the UK .

I suspect his earlier comment about cooking might have more to do with home-brewing than food . . .

Best wishes to him - a good home-brew is great.  A bad home-brew is horrid.

I'm not a beer drinker, so I wouldn't know a bad one from a good one.

I know that there are a lot of pubs in the UK, but it's hard to believe that 38 pubs go out of business every week.

I know that there are a lot of pubs in the UK, but it's hard to believe that 38 pubs go out of business every week.

It's an awful situation - exacerbated by the smoking ban, taxes charged on pub sales but not shop sales, the stranglehold that corporations have on the pub business - it's harder and harder to find an independent - and of course the horrible economy (among other things).  A shame to see a genuinely ancient institution dying, especially the CAMRA pubs (I believe Sean is a real ale supporter).

Interesting information here:  http://www.camra.org.uk/

(on a different note - the Great British Beer Festival is the first week of August in London . . . if he's not working, I'd be surprised if Sean didn't come a calling . . .)

I think it's independent pubs. A lot of them are bought up by the big companies, so they all sell the same stuff and there's no nice little surprises anymore. Over all the years I visited England I haven't seen many pubs disappear, but they did change considerably, and usually not for the best. Even the names are changed to something really silly.

It's a bit of a lose/lose situation really.  The big chains have bought up all the city centre pubs and turned them all into  clones (based on some master plan from their marketing people).  The true independant is very hard to find and they usually are centred on food (or are in such a touristy place that they can't fail to make money and can charge whatever they like).

Outside the cities, country pubs are struggling because people won't drive to them like they used to (No bad thing) but they are generally still owned by chains and the tenants struggle to get the turnover they need to keep going.  Several near where I live have been turned into private houses or have been turned into restaurants.  The ones that have stayed as pubs change landlords every year (or even every few months in some cases) as people try to live their dream and make a living and go bankrupt in the process.

I've done my fair share of home brewing / winemaking in the past.  Work means that I've not done so much in recent years - you do need time to do it all.  The dregs from the tubs /barrels are good for the garden though so it' not just the brewer that benefits from a bit of beer DIY.

A patek?  Yeah... like he's going to drop the lolly for one of those!  Only about 10x the price of what he's wearing (which he nicked from one of his roles... which one was it?  I don't remember.)
