Sheffield United players join boss Chris Wilder in agreeing pay deferral
Quote
Sheffield United players have joined manager Chris Wilder and chief executive Stephen Bettis in agreeing partial pay and bonus deferrals during the coronavirus pandemic.
Wilder, Bettis and senior coaches accepted six-month deferrals on Monday.
The Blades said the entire professional playing staff had now "emulated the decision" by accepting a partial pay deferral until the end of 2020.
United say the money saved will be used to retain and pay other staff in full.
Fellow Premier League side Watford are set to defer players’ pay and Southampton and West Ham confirmed they would do the same earlier this month.
The Blades said the pay deferrals would "assist the club's cash flow issues" during the pandemic "amid uncertainty regarding the timing for a return to action".

Singing for the Blades, Sheffield and the NHS
Quote
It's one of football's most instantly recognisable chants, now United's special Kop anthem is scoring for the city's NHS workers.
Local singer, songwriter and performer Max Restaino has recorded a fabulous bluesy/jazz 'Greasy Chip Butty' track which is a tribute to the Blades - and Sheffield itself, his home city.

It promises to give Unitedites something to cheer about during the Premier League lockdown and every penny it raises through downloads goes to the Sheffield Hospitals Charity.
The song came about when Max's friend, local journalist Mike Firth, dared to mention he thought the hugely popular chant needed something adding. Perhaps another verse or two.
"That's what I suggested to Max but it soon became clear he was thinking on a whole different level and within a week he had written, performed and recorded a fabulous new song. I'm sure Blades fans will take it to their hearts and other Sheffield folk will also appreciate it," said Mike.

Max added: "I've lived in Sheffield all my life so writing lyrics wasn't so difficult. I'm a very proud Sheffielder and I really think that comes across in the song. I enjoyed using the humorous Sheffield colloquialisms and using a Sheffield accent in places of the song. I don't get to incorporate that when singing and writing music for myself so it was fun to do so.
"I've known the 'Greasy Chip Butty' for years as it has turned into a well-known football chant. Me and my friends sing the song when United games are on. I've always found the lyrics funny and definitely think they capture Northern humour.
"I'm glad I had the opportunity to write and produce a full song using 'Greasy Chip Butty' as the chorus. I'm sure that devoted United fans and many Sheffielders will be thrilled to hear the song dedicated to our home town.
"It's the perfect time to release the song to make people smile in uncertain times and to raise money for a worthy cause."

The song is available to download on all major platforms, click here to listen on Spotify - every penny of your donation will go to Sheffield Hospitals Charity.
David Reynolds, executive director of Sheffield Hospitals Charity, said: "This is an incredible display of support from Max and everybody involved.
"This song is an opportunity to share in something special; something that celebrates Sheffield and says 'thank you' to our NHS. So please do download it and share it as far and wide as possible.
"All the proceeds will support those hard-working staff in our hospitals - providing them with care packages, refreshments, break-out areas and much more at this time of need. Your help would mean more than ever.

Blades say 'Thank you NHS'

Quote
United's continued backing of the NHS during the current Covid-19 pandemic has evolved further.
Following the weekly show of support for the NHS and key workers on the frontline at 8pm on Thursday, Bramall Lane's hallowed turf has had an image projected on the playing surface thanking the NHS for all the work they are doing, both locally and across the UK.

The Club has worked closely with PA Entertainments to form the projection, as have others clubs in the region, with operations director Dave McCarthy remarking: "We know many of our supporters will be missing their visits to Bramall Lane and thought it the perfect time to give them a glimpse of the stadium and at the same time show our support for the incredible and brave work of the NHS at this testing time.
"We're acutely aware that many Blades supporters, as well as family and friends, work for the NHS and the thanks and appreciation of everyone connected to the Club goes out to them and all the other key workers and volunteers who are working tirelessly on the front line."

FA Cup set for restart
Quote
The Football Association [The FA] has agreed a provisional restart date for the 2019/20 Emirates FA Cup.
Following the announcement that the 2019/20 Premier League season will provisionally restart on 17th June, The Emirates FA Cup Quarter Finals will now take place over the weekend of 27th-28th June.

The Semi Finals and Final will take place over the weekend of 18th-19th July and 1st August respectively.
Further information on venues and timings will be announced in due course.
FA Chief Executive Officer Mark Bullingham said: "We are pleased to agree the provisional restart date for the 2019/20 Emirates FA Cup. The competition has been an integral part of the English football calendar for nearly 150 years, and we'd like to thank the Premier League Executive and Clubs for their support in scheduling the remaining matches during this unprecedented time.
"This has been a difficult period for many people and while this is a positive step, the restart date is dependent on all safety measures being met. The health and wellbeing of players, staff and supporters remains our priority."

Live Premier League football on BBC TV for the first time ever
Quote
For the first time since the Premier League’s inception in 1992, the BBC can confirm that it will be broadcasting free to air live games upon the league’s return next month.
Four live games in total will air on the BBC alongside a bumper crop of Match Of The Day highlight programmes.
Director of BBC Sport, Barbara Slater, says: “This opportunity creates an historic moment for the BBC and our audiences. At a time when sports fans across the country are in need of lift, this is very welcome news. We are delighted and excited to have the chance to show live Premier League games on the BBC. This will offer audiences, who haven't had the opportunity in the past, live, free to air access to the best football league in the world, as the BBC continues to keep the country entertained during these unprecedented times.”
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, football fans last taste of Premier League action was March 9. The BBC will be working closely with the Premier League to ensure all appropriate safety measures are adhered to in the broadcasting of these games.
Before the Premier League era, the last time a live, top-flight league football match was broadcast during the 1987-88 season; not forgetting Match Of The Day’s highlights and analysis which has been a staple of football culture since 1964. These Premier League games sit alongside the BBC’s existing live FA Cup offering, which we also hope to welcome back to screens soon.

Sheffield United: Oliver Norwood says Blades are 'ready to play now'
Quote
Sheffield United midfielder Oliver Norwood says fitness is not a concern for the Blades as they prepare for the Premier League to restart.
United will be one of the first teams to return to action, when they play Aston Villa on Wednesday 17 June.
That will be 100 days since the Premier League was suspended, and squads only resumed contact training on Thursday.
But Norwood told BBC Radio 5 live: "If you told us we were playing this weekend, I think we would be ready."
The four top-flight teams with a game in hand - including the Blades - are the first to play again after the break because of the coronavirus pandemic, before a full round of fixtures takes place on the weekend of 19-21 June
.
Premier League set to restart on 17 June
All matches will take place behind closed doors and teams are set to play twice a week, with a view to completing the league season by Saturday, 25 July.
There are concerns about players' fitness ahead of such an intensive programme and whether they will be more injury prone after their hiatus, but Norwood says he and his team-mates are in good shape.
"We have done all the running that we would do pre-season, albeit away from the training ground," Norwood said in an interview with BBC Radio 5 live's The Friday Football Social.
"We have done a test that we do first day back of pre-season, and everyone has bettered their times, so we are obviously doing something right.
"We are fit - it is just a case now of getting out there in these next couple of weeks. We will be playing 11 v 11 [in training] and building up to game mode."
Sheffield United are seventh in the Premier League, two points behind fifth-placed Manchester United.

Sheffield United take ownership of Bramall Lane ground
Quote
Sheffield United say they have regained ownership of their Bramall Lane stadium and training ground.

The acquisition comes after Prince Abdullah Bin Mosaad Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud won a High Court battle for control of the club last year.

Prince Abdullah, a member of the Saudi royal family, said owning the properties "is an important step".

He added: "We now look forward to capitalising on this as we establish the Blades in the Premier League."

As part of the move, Sheffield United have also regained ownership of the Bramall Lane stadium hotel and the site of the club's academy.

The purchase of the property assets, from a company controlled by former United co-owner Kevin McCabe, was for an undisclosed fee set by an arbitration process.

"Is football corrupt?" - Sheffield United fans react after Manchester City win UEFA ban appeal
Manchester City had their two season European ban from UEFA overturned this morning
Quote
Manchester City have had their two season ban from competing in either of UEFA’s club competitions overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

City were originally handed the suspension in February following breaches of UEFA’s Financial Fair Play Rules. However, after the club appealed the suspension, CAS have this morning ruled that punishment as too much, with Pep Guardiola’s side now able to compete in next season’s Champions League.

For Sheffield United, that puts a dent in their hopes for qualifying for either the Champions League or the Europa League. Had City been banned from competing in Europe next season, seventh place would have been enough for Europa League qualification and a top five finish would have taken Chris Wilder’s side into the Europa League places.

Today’s verdict means that the Premier League’s top four will qualify for the Champions League, with fifth and sixth qualifying for the Europa League.

However, seventh could be enough for a Europa League finish if either Chelsea, Manchester United or Manchester City win the FA Cup next month.

Blades fans have been reacting to today’s news on Twitter and whilst some supporters have questioned the decision, others are still hopeful of qualifying for Europe.

Premier League: Who can qualify for Champions League and Europa League?

Quote
Europa League
The teams who finish fifth and sixth will qualify for next season's Europa League (unless they win one of next month's European tournaments).

If the FA Cup winners finish in the top six, then seventh place in the Premier League would qualify for the Europa League. The team who qualify in the lowest league spot go into the second qualifying round.

FA Cup semi-finalists Arsenal are currently ninth in the league.

At least one of Chelsea, Leicester City and Manchester United will end up in the Europa League spots but we will focus our permutations on the teams who will hope to qualify.

 8. Sheffield United

Everton (h, 20 July), Southampton (a, 26 July)

Sheffield United's defeat by Leicester means their hopes of qualifying for Europe for the first time are out of their hands. They need Wolves and/or Spurs to slip up.

Monday's match result  Sheffield United 0-1 Everton

Quote
Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder praised his players for "massively overachieving" after the Blades' hopes of securing European football next season were ended by Everton.

Richarlison's header early in the second half secured a victory for the Toffees and means Wilder's side cannot finish higher than eighth with one game remaining.

The Blades were favourites to make an immediate return to the Championship but have surpassed expectations with a superb season in which they are guaranteed to finish inside the top 10.

"The club and the players have overachieved massively," Wilder told BBC Sport. "To have had any talk of jumping into the top six means the players deserve an enormous amount of credit.

"We are delighted as staff we have got the maximum out of the players. They have left everything out there yet again.

"Yes they lacked that bit of quality in the final third but top 10 guaranteed and another season in the Premier League - that is what we should be reflecting on."

Wolves' win against Crystal Palace later on Monday ended Sheffield United's slim hopes of playing European football next season.

Regardless, Sheffield United have one game remaining of a superb season and they can be proud of their efforts.
