I think the gaffer has made some good signings in the last couple of weeks.  Cotterill will be good for us - gads, he was great on loan and he wants to be at the Lane, which is half the battle it seems.  I don't know much about Spring, but Blackwell thinks highly of him and has worked with him before . . . the new keeper, Huber?  At the moment all I know is that he's eye candy!

Darius Henderson has settled in pretty quickly and he can score from open play, which may make for a winning combination with Cotterill.

And it sounds like Blackwell is trying to get Lee Martin back on a 1 year loan.  He was a real plus last season and I'd love to see him come back (permanently, even!)

I'm optimistic about the season and cannot WAIT for next Saturday!!  Crossing my fingers that Beattie is fit soon, that Keith's ankle isn't too bad, and that Morgan and Quinn manage to keep their tempers!

UTB!!

Do you know by any chance why Darius is praised everywhere as "the great Yorkshireman" ?

Thanks, SM - I swear I'm getting as bad as the boys when it comes to footie.  I used to be able to just watch . . . now I find myself fascinated with the team make-up.  I suppose the next forward movement in my obsession will be learning stats and debating whether or not a given player works better as an "inside right-winger" or an "outside left".

Yikes.

I'm not sure about Darius Henderson - perhaps because he was born and raised in Doncaster (next town over from Sheffield)?  He's a big boy (over 6 feet tall) and powerful; a good goal scorer but also a bit aggressive - he's collected his fair share of cards.

On another note, I was delighted to see that Blackwell rejected the 2 million bid by WBA for Michael Tonge.

And the best, NM: it matches to both, Sean AND the blades :-)))))

Lighty - adorable, that you are becoming an expert - itīs fascinating! The whole footie scene is a big game for big boys with big money - whoīs buying whom, whoīs going where, and the sucess of a team has a lot to do with money and clever gambling :-) Like you I am watching my own team Bayern Muenchen now, since Klinsmann took over (and I so would love to see the guys one time - but everybody laughed at me when I said I want a ticket - just ONE ! - this season. Am the joke of the town - lmso - no way to get one, for no game until 2030 or so - lol)
Am happy that we have you as an insider - I never find time to read all my SUFC newsletters carefully - but maybe I will get intoxinated once the season really starts!

Argggh.

Blues 1 Blades 0

Okay - we didn't deserve a win, but we did deserve a draw.

But nooooo - have to let the concentration lapse in the LAST bloody minute of extra time.  And lose.

Back four were brilliant - Blackwell has found a good combination there and forced Birmingham to rethink their front end.  Sharp was a waste of airspace; Henderson has potential, but why couldn't a young man make it through 90 minutes without tiring?  Tonge started well and then went AWOL.  It sounded like Speed did what he could (a decade on Henderson and HE made 90 minutes).  Why wasn't Cotts played?  We need Beattie back NOW.

argh.

thanks for this short review, when and where will  the next match stand  ?

They're playing the first round of the Carling Cup (non-league play) on Wednesday at 19:45 GMT.  Won't be televised, but it will be on Match Live (BBC radio Sheffield . . . I don't know if you can get that).  Most of the matches will only be on the radio.  They'll play Port Vale, a Division two team (that's two divisions below them) so it might be a rout or it might be a match - you can never tell with Cup play!

Here is the complete fixtures list (FLC=league match, LGCP=Cup match - if they advance they'll add the next round to the list). Sorry it doesn't line up right; too early in the morning for me to do a table!

After spending 18 years on the cinder track or around the grounds of Nottm. Forest and Notts. County my interst has waned.I like to see the local sides do well. Both grounds are within  a mile of my home which means every Saturday there is no where to park and some local streets are closed off.The local pubs are full of away fans and they all want to step off the pavement in front of me when I am driving.Oh I love the football season.
