Sheffield Utd   2 - 0   Brentford

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/eng_div_2/14429658.stm

Excellent result - it sounded like they ran all over Brentford.  The back is strong and working well in concert with each other, the midfield is taking its time . . . the forwards are improving.

Having a bit of trouble keeping up with the new players, though.  The names aren't as familiar to me, so I get confused about who is doing what to whom, where!

The fans sounded AMAZING and the match was non-stop (even Seth Bennett sounded impressed!)  9 points from three matches - that's the way it's supposed to work!

Have to agree with Keith, we dropped two points.  Lost focus in the last 20 minutes.  Ah, well.  Early days yet!

But Monty scored from 30 yards out!  Not only a rare goal for him, but apparently a beautiful, perfect ball straight into the back of the net.
Go, Nick!!

Hard to get terribly excited about this.  I would have preferred a closer score, but it was pretty much a given that we'd lose - at least, as Keith said, they did us the courtesy of turning out a very strong squad rather than assuming we'd fold like wet tissue paper facing their under-21s!

The new lad Flynn sounds like he has some potential, assuming he can keep himself out of trouble on the pitch (Quinn redux, anyone?)

Well deserved three points - Yeovil didn't put up much of a fight.  Can't figure out what was up with the referee in the last couple of minutes of injury time . . . water on the brain?

In any case, we're on top of the table for the moment, but it's doubtful we'll stay there for long as we're only two points up from both MK Dons and Charlton.  That draw is proving annoying!

Up at the half over Bury.

Here's a question for all: how do you pronounce that city name?  Like 'burr-y' or like 'bear-y'?

Andy Giddings is pronouncing it 'bear-y' and Keith Edwards is pronouncing it 'burr-y' and the half-time BBC announcer just said 'bear-y'.  How do the people in Bury pronounce it??

Just answered my own question!  This quote from someone on the dialect blog at the BBC . . .

Quote
Chris Bainbridge from Bury
I spent the first few years of my life on Tyneside, so am still able to understand and speak Geordie. We moved to just north of Manchester when I was little, so I had to learn a new way of talking, because nobody could understand me at first. I thought I was putting on my best B.B.C. newsreader voice and thought I sounded like Richard baker, but in reality I sounded more like Jimmy Nail. Most of the other kids at school thought I was "Scotch" (to use their term). The local accent in Prestwich was a bit like today's Manchester twang, a bit nasal. But just three or four miles up the road they talk Lancashire, like Peter Kay (as I found when I went to secondary school). The Mancunians used to deride the Bury lot, and call them "Farmers", or "Yonners" (why? Because they come from "over yon"!). I live in Bury now, the very name of which is a one-word linguistic test. You can tell a Manc by the way they pronounce "Bury" as "Berry". My old compadres the Geordies (as well as the Scots) say "Burry". The locals, however, pronounce it somewhere in between, with a vowel sound like a shortened version of the French "beurre", or a German "o-umlaut". So now you know!

Sooo . . . Bury is 'berry' if you're Mancunian - 'burry' if you're Geordie or Scots - and something in-between if you're a local (not sure how that sounds, though!)

Well - we drew rather than lost, but we should have won.  It was a game of halves.  First half was dire -played like last season.  Second half, played much, much better.

Scored.  Good, but our scorer was Ched Evans . . . which is psychologically problematic, given that he's under charges for rape.  I want - really want - to stick by what I believe, ethically, which is innocent until proven guilty - but rape is such an emotionally charged subject and I realise, even as I say 'innocent until proven' that part of my brain is saying 'yeah, but . . .' (I need to work on this, obviously!)

We went top of table - but we did it barely, and the reason is because Wednesday (!!) beat MK Dons rather decisively.  Wednesday!

Game of halves all around.

Making up for last match - 3-0 at the moment (should be more like 6-0 but we keep hitting the woodwork)!
