Undersoil heating can work but only if used with other forms of protection (covers on the pitch, hot air blowers etc).  Outside the premiiership clubs just don't have the money to pay the massive costs involved for heating.

'Elf & Safety also have a bit of a say in the matter.  I've seen local matches postponed, not because of the pitch, which has often been worked on by armies of volunteers to get it in a fit state to play on,  but because snow and ice are covering the terraces and surrounding areas and it is deemed too dangerous for the public to be admitted.  Once you get down to Div1, you don't have all seater stadiums - there are standing terraces where hundreds of people can be moving about.

I'm not a footie fan, I much prefer rugby and I agree there's nothing quite like a good muddy pitch for an entertaining game.  At teh end of the day though, the officials have to think of the safety of players, supporters and themselves.

Turned it off (metaphorical walk out) when Reading scored the third.  Wasn't in the mood for another rout.

Sheffield United: Don’t write us off

Quote
DANNY Wilson, the Sheffield United manager, has warned it would be a grave mistake to write-off his team’s automatic promotion credentials.
United, whose leading scorer Nick Blackman is expected to be unveiled as a Reading player within the next 24 hours, have dropped from first to sixth in the League One table after failing to win any of their last four games

Yes, because losing your leading scorer is so confidence inspiring.  Thanks, Kev - I feel so much better now.

Granted, you could tell the moment Reading started nosing around for Blackman, because he became Mr. "hell, no I'm not going to risk hurting myself on the pitch" dude.

sigh.  I don't blame the young man for wanting to improve his fortunes, but I'm starting to despise the January transfer window.

We were off to a shaky start against Sunderland, first half was a joke. 2nd poised to look better in the beginning, 1 goal in and we finished spectacularly. Though our defense is weak and we had to pull down the whole midfield in the end to keep the score, they showed some fighting spirit that's been lacking for a while. Hoping this will instill some confidence in the players, but I wont forgive Wenger for not setting up a solid baseline defense. More pressure than this and we will crack.

Good match and an "easy" win . . . Bury is sitting in relegation right now.  Kevin Blackwell is their manager and he's trying, but they have absolutely no money - and a transfer embargo so they can't bring in anyone at all.  Apparently, they had two players on the field who were working on no wages (one of them was a Bury coach) and only six on the bench.

I felt sorry for them.  The financial discrepancies in the leagues are killing the smaller clubs and I'm afraid Bury is another one that is going to be history soon.

I love a tight table - United have gone from 5th to 2nd in three games (with three wins).  Certainly feels better than it did a couple of weeks ago!  UTB!

Lost one nil to Blackburn. Maybe it's a good thing I was preoccupied with 17-19th century political philosophy. Sigh.

Last half of this season is going to be a roller-coaster ride.  We were at 2nd after the last match, but then down to 4th after other match results came in.  Now they're on top, with one point separating them from the clubs 2nd-4th.  Four of the six clubs at the top have a game in hand, including the Blades . . .
