... as well as Sean Bean’s tough depiction of a rough-edged but not unmerciful swordsman of the Lord. If I’m not mistaken, this has been the first time the latter has put on a medieval harness again after his alter ego Boromir died in a cloud of orcish arrows in THE LORD OF THE RINGS, but yet you never have the impression that Bean is merely repeating his classic role from the popular Peter Jackson movie. Though there are of course certain parallels between the two characters, the deeply religious Ulric is very much a personality of his own and has some truly memorable and affecting scenes in BLACK DEATH.

BLACK DEATH is one helluva enthralling, disturbing and simply breathtaking film which is so intensive at times that you almost think you’re lying on a torture rack instead of sitting in a theater seat!

Score: 9 / 10

Grade: A+: Prepare to be floored by this epic, terrifying tale of one of the bleakest moments in world history. As it should be, this movie is truly as bleak and disturbing as they come. It doesn’t completely rely on gore (though it does have some messy moments). The acting, directing, atmosphere, writing, everything about this movie had me floored. It is an amazing masterpiece that demands to be seen by horror fans. Definitely give this one a look when you get a chance!

Nice to see such good reviews.

I watched this film months ago now.  Loved Sean in it, and I thought it was excellent.  Even though it was a shade too dark and grisly for my normal tastes, I still couldn't stop watching it until the end.  It was compelling.

In the end, Black Death is a movie that should’ve been lost deep in the straight-to-DVD bin at your local Walmart. The fact that somebody felt it deserved a theatrical run, while other more qualified movies never get that chance, just goes to show that whether by the grace of god, or fault of man, little is fair in the movie biz.

Most of the commenters don't agree with the reviewer.

As for Sean Bean; he shared an electrifying chemistry with his male cohorts (the talented John Lynch, Andy Nyman, Johnny Harris and cie) and he once again possessed the scenery with his grounded yet commanding display. Talk about presence! All that dude has to do is stand there and you can't take your eyes off him. And thankfully here; he did wayyyyy more than that, so you do the math. I got BEANED! Seriously though Sean Bean needs more roles like this in more films like this.

'Talk about presence! All that dude has to do is stand there and you can't take your eyes off him.'

This is so true - I was trying to explain this to my brother the other day as to why I like Sean so much.  For example, I actually like Christian Bale but in 'Equilibrium' my whole attitude whilst Sean was in it, was 'Get out of the way Bale, you're blocking my view'. And that's polite in comparison to what I was saying to Brosnan during 'GoldenEye'.

The coincidence of storylines between "Season of the Witch" and "Black Death" is rather striking and in every instance Black Death is the superior film

I enjoyed the film for what it was, thought it was classily made and would recommend it as an admirable example of how to make a period horror film on a sane budget.

The production only had two horses, instead of a horse for everyone in Bean’s group. So, Frankish suggested they “just have two horses for Sean,” while everyone else walks – setting up a strong visual about power and rank.

And later, when a character is to be drawn and quartered on screen, (remember, this is a horror film), he is instead drawn and “halved,” with just the two horses.

But the moment is every bit as effective.

“Black Death” was released last summer in Great Britain on the same night as the opening game of the World Cup, a strategy that nearly doomed the movie.

“The distributor thought the kids who love horror would go see it,” said Smith, with a chuckle. “What they didn’t know is that everyone in England is a soccer fan during the World Cup. The movie did brilliantly in DVD, though.

Here in Colorado out cable company has a feature that lets you see some movies prior to their release date at the movies or on DVD.  They cost a little more than normal on demand movies but we love it.  Got to watch Black Death and Death Race 2 that way.  And you get to rewatch as many times as you want for 2 days.  That is a real treat.  My hubby and I make a bowl of pop corn and sit on the couch and watch them.  I cant wait until more of his movies become available this year. :phbbbt

Like Viggo Mortensen in “Lord of the Rings,” Bean instills Ulric with macho stoicism – all sweat-soaked beard and bloodstained armor
