The Modern Classics.  What do you think?  I think I've got some movies to line up when I do a stay-cation and spend the week watching movies.  LoL.

Well, there are quite a few on there I wouldn't consider classic and there are a few I don't even want to see.

There's a few too many that I've seen that I wished I hadn't.  Hours of my life just wasted.

I've seen 9 - and the first ten minutes of "Three Kings", which bored the crap out of me.

Who came up with that list??

The original list is better . . . I've seen 36 of those (some are on the newer list, though).  Most date pre-1970.

Where's the original list??

Look in the intro to the list and there's a link to 'movies to see before you die' or something like that.  It has the older films and some of the newer ones' as well.

They're still missing a lot that I consider better films - but I'm hardly representative of the viewing population when it comes to popular culture!

I've seen 68 of those movies.  We get all the cable movie channels, so there are a lot of opportunites to watch them.

Ah yes - the AFA list.    :naughty:

I like using that one in my class - first I show the students' a particularly repugnant clip or two from "Birth of a Nation" (I once showed them the entire film, over two class sessions but they accused me of cruel and unusual punishment, so I haven't repeated that experiment).

Then I put up the list of the top 100 films (note that B of a N is at #44) . . . then I watch their heads explode while they try to figure out WHY the AFA chose it (not because of the subject matter, certainly, but it takes them a minute or two to figure that out).

I have seen most of the films on the AFA list; don't agree that they are all classics.

American Film Institute?  Oh... I'd say that would be a much better list.

Have you noticed that there is nothing on the list that was released in this century?  Surely Saving Private Ryan or Benjamin Button are more important films than Bringing up Baby or Yankee Doodle Dandy?  King Kong??? Give me a break.

That list is not supposed to be inclusive.  It was part of their 100 years of film celebration.  From their website . . .

"AFI's 100 Years...100 Movies is an 18-month celebration that began last November when AFI invited more than 1,500 leaders from across the American film community - screenwriters, directors, actors, producers, cinematographers, editors, executives, film historians and critics, among them - to choose from a list of 400 nominated films compiled by AFI and select the 100 greatest American movies. The nominated films were all made in the first 100 years of American cinema (1896-1996). Movies produced after 1996 were not included. "
