Quote of the day . . .
« on: July 11, 2010, 11:40:38 AM »
"There are two novels that can transform a bookish 14-year-old's life: the Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish daydream that can lead to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood in which large chunks of the day are spent inventing ways to make real life more like a fantasy novel. The other is a book about orcs."

- from Raj Patel's "The Value of Nothing."

Maybe every other American movie shouldn't be based on a comic book. Other countries will think Americans live in an infantile fantasy land where reality is whatever we say it is and every problem can be solved with violence.

I've always liked that one, Lighty.  A Librarian friend of mine has that as his signature in a forum.  :)

My email sig line is a personal favourite . . .

"It was the infantry coats I wanted to see, though, for I know what matters. When the guns haven't come up, and your cavalry's checked by close country; and you're waiting in the hot, dusty hush for the faint rumble of impi or harka over the skyline and know they're twenty to your one- well, that's when you realise that it all hangs on that double line of yokels and town scruff with their fifty rounds a man and an Enfield bayonet."

I'm enjoying reading these quotes!

It may have been forgotten, but we have another quote thread that was started last year.  It's in the Games and Quizzes forum, called Quotes of the Day.

No sooner did we form into teams than we were re-organised.
I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet every situation by re-organising and what a wonderful method it is for giving the illusion of progress whilst only producing confusion, inefficiency & demoralisation.
