I was fully prepared for Death Race 2's stellar supporting cast of Sean Bean, Danny Trejo and Ving Rhames to be conveniently killed off within minutes of appearing. Instead, all three of them have consistently important roles throughout
Add Sean Bean having a blast in full, potty mouthed, gangster mode, Ving Rhames as a sinister letch and Danny Trejo lifting every scene he's in with his own unique brand of cool, and there's a lot to keep the entertainment level up between the action
At least they let him keep his own speak ......
The potty mouth won't be a surprise ...........
What he doesn’t reckon on is the bounty placed on his head by a paranoid crime boss who believes that Lucas is about to cough up his secrets.
but the movie is so slick and violent I can’t see action fans complaining too heavily. What’s more, knowing Paul WS Anderson’s propensity for churning out sequels – witness the Resident Evil saga for proof – I wouldn’t bet against this series being extended even further. All in all, a highly respectable straight-to-DVD thriller.
VERDICT: 7/10 With a sprinkling of black humour and a couple of nice homages to the original film, this is a boys’ film that doesn’t pretend to be groundbreaking.
This is another movie that surprised me. Like so many recent DIRECT TO DVD releases, this film could have made their money back easily if released to theatres originally.
Sean Bean doesn’t have much to do as mob boss Marcus Kane (the man who hired Goss as the driver and the man who tries to have him killed at every turn
Death Race 2 is most-definitely a worthy prequel to the Statham original.
So it’s left to Sean ‘See Wot Yow Can Dow’ Bean to chew scenery for Yorkshire as scowly mob boss Markus Kane – whether he’s berating minions or smashing up TVs in fits of pique like some apoplectic, Sheffield-born Nicolas Cage, he provides welcome respites from all the prison-based dullness.
For a DVD premiere, Death Race 2 is pretty solid – some great action sequences, a very impressive support cast (Danny Trejo, Sean Bean, Ving Rhames), proficient direction by DTV regular Roel Reine, and – though not a necessity for such a film – a well-thought script.
He looks great in this movie!! So my question is will he keep the clothes?????
Death Race 2” certainly does bring some punch and offers more than most B-flicks, but it pales in comparison with its predecessor. Were it not for the annoying editing, and the weird pacing issues, this would’ve been a much better feature, almost on par with the first film. It’s fun and all, but again, there’s much unfulfilled potential here.
