Sean Bean Set For The Martian

Quote
He’ll suffocate! He’ll experience explosive decompression! He’ll be roasted by a stray rocket booster! He’s playing the planet Mars and it blows up at the end!” Yes, we can almost hear the litany of How Will Sean Bean Die jokes being drawn up as we write it, but here’s the news anyway – he’s joined the cast of Ridley Scott’s The Martian.

Matt Damon is starring in the film as NASA astronaut Mark Watney, left stranded on Mars after his crewmates on the Ares 3 mission are forced to evacuate by a dust storm.

To stave off death on the Red Planet, Watney tries to rustle up water and grow crops. Meanwhile, his fellow astronauts are kept in the dark about his survival during their voyage back to Earth on the Hermes spacecraft. NASA struggles to find some way to rescue Watney, while the Hermes astronauts add their efforts once they finally discover he’s alive. Jeff Daniels will play the NASA boss who must decide how much to tell Watney’s colleagues about his dire straits, while Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara and Michael Pena are all now listed as aboard the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

As for Bean, he’s staying firmly on the ground as a NASA flight director, who presumably works for Daniels’ character and faces little chance of kicking any buckets unless a stray space shuttle lands on him, or something. Drew Goddard adapted Andy Weir’s book for the film, which kicks off filming next month.

Wow... another bit part. He'll probably have about as much screen time as he did as Capt Rich in Flightplan. It does sound like another blockbuster, tho. And films set in space (Gravity, Interstellar) seem to be popular right now. At least with the high profile films he usually ends up doing some publicity interviews.

It sounds like a pretty interesting plot.  Hopefully, there will be a lot of press for it, including some interviews with Sean.

Wow - a director of the standing of Ridley Scott - wants him; OMG!  Not just revered by fans but also in the industry - wonderful, absolutely wonderful.  Who cares how big the part is, the fact that a director like that wants him in his film is just fantastic.  That's what I'm talking 'bout!!!!!

The director of one of my absolute favourite films too - "The Duellists".

Our Sean is definitely in demand !! The rating are low for Legends and he still gets a lot of acting jobs !!
2 big acting jobs in just a few hours. That's amazing !! Legends should sign him up for season 2 ASAP !!!

Ridley Scott’s The Martian Adds The Most Killable Man In Hollywood

Quote
British actor Sean Bean just joined Ridley Scott‘s The Martian, a thriller about a man who is trapped on Mars. It’s a good thing that Matt Damon is already playing the solitude-heavy lead character here, because we all know what would happen if Bean had taken the main part. It would have been a short film called Man Dies on Mars Before Being Saved. And that kind of a title doesn’t scream “box office success” at all, does it?

Bean is the latest in a relatively long line of actors to join the flick, making it even more of a must-see adventure when it comes out. There isn’t much to his character description though, as he’s only described as a NASA flight director. This doesn’t sound like he’ll be in the line of fire at any point, and I can vouch that Andy Weir’s spectacular novel doesn’t involve any NASA-set sword fights or anything, so maybe he’ll make it through this one alive.

Bean has been joining everything in recent months to complement his strong TV presence on the hit TNT drama Legends. GFR readers know that he’s in both the Wachowski’s upcoming space odd-pera Jupiter Ascending (opposite Channing Tatum) and the high concept comedy Pixels, in which aliens destroy the world posing as video game characters. He’s also set to play the title role in Tiago Mesquita’s adaptation Caesar, based on William Shakespeare’s play.

The Martian Has Quietly Put Together A Home Run, A-List Cast

Sean Bean
Finally, we round out the cast with everyone's favorite character actor, Sean Bean. Our fingers are crossed, in hopes that Bean's role as NASA flight director doesn't involve a rogue spacecraft landing on his head.

If Entertainment Weekly is to be trusted, The Martian is planned for shooting this November, so it can be released/make the festival rounds before its November 2015 release date

This sounds like a great cast.  This could be a blockbuster, or it will go bust.  You never know.

I'm wondering how big a part for Sean this will be ??? Why team him up with another good actor (Jeff Daniels)
if they're not going to do anything ??? Maybe they will have 3 plotlines going at the same time. One story
about the lost person another about the crew on the ship and still another story about NASA'S people trying
to help find him. That would be more interesting than just one person walking around on a plant banging
into rocks. They could make this film like Apollo 13 the people at ground control had a big part in that movie.

It sounds like an interesting premise with a good cast and an amazing director but, by the time it is released, I'm just wondering if everyone will have space movie overload given that we have "Interstellar" just about to open here and "Prometheus 2" being talked about as well.  I get that there is always that Hollywood idea of 'if something makes money, jump on that bandwagon' and I guess these all come post "Gravity" but I don't know - just how many space films does a person realistically want to see in a short space (excuse the pun) of time?

Has any one read this book ??? I would like to know some thing about the character that Sean's playing. I'm
hoping that he's a techie nerd in this movie. The only time Sean's been a nerd was in the film My Kingdom
for a Horse. He was AMAZING in that movie. That's why I want to see he nail the nerd role again!!

FOX confirms: Aksel being German astronaut in major film

Quote
Hennie has got a role as an astronaut in Ridley Scott's next film, " The Martian "which features Matt Damon in the lead role.  Damon plays an astronaut stranded on Mars after a failed NASA expedition, while Hennie is part of the team that will save him.

The recording of "The Martian" has already started in Budapest

The book portrays the struggle to survive on Mars and the intense drama that takes place on Earth in preparation for the rescue operation.  It is no vague sci-fi fable with aliens and laser-worth, but written with realism as the goal, and has been described as the "Cast Away" meets "Apollo 13".

case of RED BULL to stay a wake just to listen to this book !! How is Sean going to make this movie more
interesting so the audience will not fall asleep ?????

The techies in my family loved the book and compared it to a modern day Robinson Crusoe.     It'll just be a different audience than Sean usually gets.
