Sean’s remarkable Blades charity gesture

Quote
Film and television star Sean Bean has overwhelmed organisers of a unique event raising funds for a cancer charity.

The star of Game of Thrones, Sharpe and Lord of the Rings was asked by Sheffield United, the Football League club he has supported since childhood, if he would provide an auction item for a gala dinner the Blades are organising to raise vital funds for the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.

Sean stunned everyone by donating his 1973 green Land Rover, which has been 'personalised' with his signatures and self-penned Blades motifs, for auction at the event at the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire's Chatsworth House stately home on Sunday (6th December).

"When we made the request to Sean we anticipated getting some signed memorabilia, never did we imagine that Sean would provide his very own Land Rover," said Operations Director Dave McCarthy.

"It is a remarkable gesture by Sean to help us to support a charity where he is a trustee," added Dave.

The vehicle will be auctioned at the event which will see many of Sheffield United's directors, vice presidents, sponsors and staff along with representatives of the hospital and the charity supporting.

However, bids can also be made online in the lead-up to the event. The Land Rover, following clean-up, is on show at Club sponsors John Holland. The prestige car specialists will display it at their showroom at Meadowhall Riverside, Sheffield where visitors can see it at first hand and decide if they wish to make a bid or register their interest to Mr McCarthy by emailing dave.mccarthy@sufc.co.uk or calling 0114 253 7200.

"The event is part of the Club's continuing support and relationship with a number of locally based charities representing Breast Cancer Care, Neurocare, Sheffield Children's Hospital, St Luke's and Bluebell Wood Hospice," added Dave.

Samantha Kennedy, Charity Director at Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, said: "We are incredibly honoured to be involved in this prestigious dinner in association with The Board at Sheffield United Football Club, who the charity has had the pleasure of working alongside now for many years.

"The event will be a unique dinner held at a stunning venue in the Peak District, bringing together people influential supporters of the club plus some well-known faces. Sheffield United Football Club are valued supporters of the cancer charity's work and we are incredibly proud to be involved in this joint venture as they pledge their support for years to come."
"We are also very thankful to Charity Patron, Sean Bean, for donating his Land Rover, which will hopefully raise even more money for such worthy causes across the region."

Mark Holland, owner of John Holland, said: "We have been delighted to help out and hopefully it will attract the interest of buyers who will be helping and support such a wonderful charity."

Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is the only dedicated charity for the Sheffield-based hospital and exists to support the world-class cancer research and to improve the treatment and care for people living with cancer.

Weston Park Hospital is one of only a handful of specialist cancer hospitals in England and treats patients from all over South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire - a population of almost 1.8million people.

THE STAR SAYS: Sheffield’s Sean Bean restores faith in human nature

Quote

You can take the man out of Sheffield, but you can’t take Sheffield out of the man.

Sean Bean might have left Sheffield years ago to pursue his Hollywood dream, but once again this week the Handsworth-raised actor proved that he has by no means forgotten his roots.

The gravelly-voiced movie star has donated his vintage 1973 Land Rover to be auctioned off with all proceeds going to Weston Park Hospital.

Supporting a Sheffield charity is a fantastic act of generosity from the ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Game of Thrones’ star.

Too many so-called ‘stars’ have forgotten where they come from, but not Sean.

There can be few Sheffielders who haven’t had a relative or friend who has benefited from cancer treatment at the hospital, or indeed benefited personally from the superb care the facility offers.

It is not surprising that it is close to the hearts not only of people living in the city now, but also people like Sean who were raised here and have since moved away.

GRAVELLY VOICED? Only if "gravelly" means sounds like chocolate velvet is caressing your ears!   :pant:

P.S.  The "Blade Mobile" insignia he created just makes me smile and smile...

£8,000?  Whoever made the purchase got it for the bargain basement price. You would think with the money going to charity, they would have been a bit more generous with the offers. I don't know what the mileage is on the car, but over here in the USA, that car's price minimum would have been $30,000 USD which is about  £21,000. Then add the value of Sean's signature etc. Dang! How can you even put a price on that? if the person who purchased it turns around and sells it for a profit, she or he is going to get  :thump   UGH!

I agree! I don't know much about vintage landrover prices but with its provenance AND for charity - £8000 seems to me a steal.

Prices might have gone up if they'd given it more prior publicity. But with only a couple of days between the announcement of Sean's donation and the auction, then there wasn't time to drum up enough interest.

‘I can’t believe I now own Sean Bean’s car’ - actor boosts Sheffield charity

Quote
Sheffield actor Sean Bean drove up the total amount raised at a star-studded fundraiser - by auctioning off his Land Rover car for £8,000.

The Hollywood star donated the vehicle to help collect cash for Weston Park Cancer Hospital Charity, of which he is a trustee.

It was auctioned off at a Sheffield United gala dinner held at Chatsworth House.

The charity auction raised more than £20,000 in total, including the £8,000 bid for the Land Rover owned by Blades fan Sean.

Derbyshire businessman Chris Miller, who was the successful bidder, said: “I can’t believe I now own Sean’s vehicle.

“It needs a bit of work but it’ll be a fantastic project to work on.”

So Sean's car provided over 1/3 of the total amount raised - even though the car needs a lot of work! Ha! I still think it was a steal.  :butt:

Sean Bean’s Land Rover gets the Movex treatment for charity auction

Quote
Dave McCarthy, Sheffield United Operations Director, turned to Movex, the UK’s leading online vehicle logistics platform, to help transport ‘The Blademobile’ – named after Sean Bean’s childhood club – the 160 miles from the actor’s home in London to Sheffield, where prestige car dealer John Holland Sales took delivery on behalf of Sheffield United.

The job was loaded onto Movex’s online platform, and national vehicle movement specialist, Arron James, which has carried out around 1,500 vehicle movements for Movex, quoted £250 to transport the vehicle. However, once the company found out the details behind the job, it generously donated its entire fee towards the fundraising effort.

James Brocklehurst at Arron James said: “We are very experienced in assisting dealers move vehicles around the UK in both the prestige and volume markets, but this job was a little different! It was a real honour to be involved in such a good cause and after hearing of Sean Bean’s incredible act in donating his treasured Land Rover, we felt that waiving our charges for the job was the least we could do.”

Daren Jones, managing director of Movex, said: “We were delighted that Sheffield United turned to us to help them with this very special vehicle movement, and were overwhelmed by the generosity of Arron James in donating its transport fee. Movex matched Arron James’ donation, so not only did the vehicle arrive safely and on time, but the charity also benefited from additional fundraising.”

Quote
“We needed to get it to Sheffield as quickly and efficiently as possible, and Movex swiftly secured a transport provider.”

I was blown away by the kindness of Arron James in not charging for the job, and for the generous donation of £250 from Movex.”

It was presented by the Blades to the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity at the Club's game against Port Vale at Bramall Lane, the funds being raised in various ways at the dinner held at Chatsworth House.

Ah. Needed a new chassis. That explains the price it went for.
