Sky D makes Magnificent acquisition
Quote
Sky Deutschland has become the latest broadcaster to acquire Renaissance drama Medici: The Magnificent from Germany’s Beta Film.

The series stars Sean Bean (Game of Thrones) alongside Daniel Sharman (Fear the Walking Dead) and will begin airing on Sky1 in Germany on December 24.

Other European broadcasters to have acquired the series include Canal+ in Poland and Czech TV, while it is available exclusively in the US on Netflix.

Created by Frank Spotnitz (The Man in the High Castle, The X-Files) and directed by Jon Cassar (24) and Jan Michelini (Un passo dal cielo), the series is set in Florence, Italy, in 1469 during a period of political and cultural upheaval.

It is set 20 years after the conclusion of the first Medici series, Medici: Masters of Florence, which debuted in October 2016.

Medici: The Magnificent is an international coproduction between Lux Vide in collaboration with Rai Fiction, Altice Group and Big Light. Beta handles worldwide sales and a second season is currently in production.

Netflix releases first trailer for Medici: The Magnificent starring Sean Bean as the period drama picks up from first series starring Richard Madden

Quote
It's the historical drama is based on the Medici family's rise to Renaissance power in Florence.

And Netflix has now offered a first look at its new period drama series, Medici: The Magnificent, which is a follow up from the 2016's Medici: Masters of Florence, starring Richard Madden.

Starring Sean Bean, the anthology series picks up 20 years after the first season and chronicles the journey of Lorenzo the Magnificent's son Lorenzo (Daniel Sharman) taking leadership of the family run bank in 15th Century Florence.

The brand new trailer provides an exhilarating look at Lorenzo the Magnificent, the most powerful and historical figures of all time, and his son's journey to resume leadership.

Once he finds himself in power, young Lorenzo is nicknamed The Magnificent as he attempts to do things differently.

His variation in tactics leads him into conflict with Jacopo Pazzi (Bean), who is the head of Florence’s other powerful banking family.

Sean's character will stop at nothing to defeat Lorenzo The Magnificent, and their feud paves way to the infamous Pazzi conspiracy.

The conspiracy was a plot by members of the Pazzi family and others to displace the de' Medici family to become rulers as of Renaissance Florence.

Sean and Daniel join the likes of Sarah Parish, Bradley James, Alessandra Mastronardi, Synnøve Karslen, Raoul Bova and Julian Sands.

Direction of the eight episodes has been divided by 24 director Jon Cassar and Jan Maria Michelini, who helmed Medici: Masters of Florence.

Frank Spotnitz (The X-Files, The Man in the High) is executive-producing alongside CEO of Lux Vide, Luca Bernabei.

Netflix: the 10 best new shows and films in January

Medici – The Magnificent
January 25th
Following on from Medici: Masters of Florence, the second season of this period drama sees the show jump right into the Renaissance with the family’s powehaving been consolidated in the past 20 years as their grip on the Italian city tightens. Daniel Sharman plays Lorenzo de’Medici, who assumes leadership of the family-run bank, clashing with Sean Bean’s grizzled Jacopo de’Pazzi along the way. Expect the usual duplicitous behaviour and political manoeuvring as the historically renowned Pazzi Conspiracy begins to unfold.

Medici: The Magnificent, Netflix
Quote
Showrunner Frank Spotnitz says shooting in and around Florence helped to keep Netflix’s Italian drama true to its era – despite the city’s hordes of tourists
A grand old cinema in Florence plays host to the press screening for Medici: The Magnificent, just a stone’s throw from where some of the Netflix renaissance drama’s most poignant scenes take place. The decision to host the event in the Italian city is entirely purposeful.

The second series of Medici, which now counts Sean Bean among its cast, demonstrates a desire from writers, producers and cast alike to be as ‘local’ as possible, building on the success of several recent European Netflix series.

Sitting in the upper rooms of the Medici Palace, his weighty comments punctuated by the sound of traffic from the busy Florentine streets below, showrunner and X-Files writer Frank Spotnitz cannot emphasise the local element enough.

“The opportunity to shoot in Italy was one of the main reasons I wanted to do this show,” says Spotnitz. “It felt like such a privilege to come to these incredible places, where people have rarely been allowed to film. We got extraordinary access throughout and you can’t fake that; there’s a texture to it that’s inspiring.”
Several fresh Florentine locations were scouted for series two, including the idyllic Tuscan towns of Volterra and Montepulciano. All was not plain sailing, however, and filming on location with a 100-person crew brought its own unique set of challenges, according to co-director Jan Michelini.

During the Volterra shoot in November 2017, the town was hit by freezing winds and Michelini, who directed the last four episodes, was forced to work in sub-zero temperatures.

It took almost a week to film a defining 10-minute action sequence in a village church. “The challenge was to film the action almost like it wasn’t an action sequence, and to dramatise it on a human level in difficult conditions,” says Michelini, who counts Medici as his first major international drama directing role.

PUTTING THE CHARACTERS INTO CONTEXT

Sean Bean, last seen on UK screens delivering a Bafta-winning performance in Jimmy McGovern’s Broken, was just as enamoured with the Italian location as his off-screen colleagues. “It’s nice working in the country where everyone in the show existed, and being with an

Italian crew gave it a more authentic feel,” he says. “You don’t have to go far to be where you should be, as it’s all around you.”

RENAISSANCE MAN

Bean, who already had a keen interest in medieval European history, prepared for his first Italian renaissance role by reading up on his character Jacopo Pazzi, along with the wider historical context in which the series is set.

He was particularly taken by filming in the medieval town of Montepulciano during the chilly Italian winter. “The town was full of buildings that had all the original crests of the Medici family,” he says. “It may have been freezing cold, but we felt like we were actually there in 1469.”

Bean tells Broadcast he would happily take on more historical roles, although he concedes “you tend to die in historical drama quite a lot – any programme where you’ve got long hair or are on a horse, you are probably in trouble”. Game Of Thrones fans will know he’s speaking from experience.

Medici season 2: Frank Spotnitz interview ‘the real history is too graphic even for television to show’
We chatted to the Medici co-creator about Sean Bean, historical gore and why he doesn’t expect anybody to care about 15th century bankers
Quote
It’s a conspiracy thriller, explains Spotnitz, “one of the greatest true life conspiracy thrillers of all time.” If you want to ruin this season for yourself, he says, “go on Wikipedia right now and look it up.”

If you were to do just that, your stomach might be turned by what you read. Put simply, 15th century Italians did not mess about when it came to exacting bloody revenge. The actual story, Spotnitz tells Den Of Geek, was too hot for TV. “If you read the real history of what happened to these people, it’s too graphic I think even for television for now to show.” What you’ll see on screen is “not as gruesome as it was in history.”

The rest of season two, Spotnitz assures, hews far closer to history than its predecessor. Timelines have been compressed to squeeze the action into eight episodes, but far fewer liberties were taken with history this time around. The reason being? “The actual history is so dramatic.”

Medici: The Magnificent is the story of a great rivalry. In the blue corner, young idealist Lorenzo de’ Medici, a banker with a keen sense of social responsibility and one of history’s most influential patrons of the arts (without him and his family, there wouldn’t be Botticelli paintings hanging in the Uffizi today). In the red corner, Jacopo Pazzi, a ruthless and predatory money man with no sense of the value of art. It’s youth vs age, revolution vs establishment, art vs empty materialism.

It’s all of that versus… Sean Bean. After Dustin Hoffman provided the star power in season one, Bean is the casting coup this time around. He plays Jacopo, the antagonist head of the Pazzi family, “he’s the villain but you do have a sympathy for him,” says Spotnitz. In real life, Bean is “very lovely, quiet,” says Spotnitz. “It’s almost a whisper when he speaks to you.” Completely the reverse of his belligerent, scheming character, whose tunnel-vision materialism, Bean told Spotnitz, makes him woeful.

“Dreams matter, stories matter. This is what gives life its richness,” stresses Spotnitz. “For people like the Jacopo Pazzis of the world, it doesn’t. They don’t see the value. Sean talked about this, he finds that tragic. He finds that character tragic because he’s not moved by stories. He’s not moved by art, it’s money and power. That’s a very mean existence. It’s an empty life.”

The first thing that happened when Bean’s role was announced online, Spotnitz laughs, was “Will he die?” After several high-profile early exits in film and TV roles, the longevity of any Sean Bean character has become a talking point among fans. Bean appears in all eight episodes of Medici: The Magnificent, assures Spotnitz. Beyond that, you’ll have to consult Wikipedia.

Not that viewers should have to, Spotnitz tells us. You don’t need to know a thing about Renaissance history to get the most from Medici. He and co-creator Nicholas Meyer (Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country) started from the position that nobody would have inherent interest in the period or the historical figures. “You need to know absolutely nothing,” he assures us. “I’m not assuming anybody cares about the Medici the bankers, they’ve been dead for 500 years.”

What viewers will care about, hopefully, are the personal stories. “A son who’s got to take over from his father, or who is in love with a woman but has to marry somebody else because his family demands it.”

‘Medici: The Magnificent’ on Netflix Almost Gives ‘Game of Thrones’ Fans a Stark Family Reunion

Quote
One of the many new shows to hit Netflix this weekend technically isn’t new at all. Medici: The Magnificent is actually just a follow up season to Medici: Masters of Florence, a lavish Renaissance drama starring Richard Madden and Dustin Hoffman. The big twist, though, is that this new season takes place a good forty years after the first, and it focuses on the grandchildren of the major players of Medici: Masters of Florence. Let’s break it down…

Medici: Masters of Florence first hit Netflix in late 2016. The series, developed by Man in the High Castle creator Frank Spotnitz, was a lush and dramatic retelling of the early days of the Medici clan’s takeover of Florence. Richard Madden played the dashing Cosimo de’Medici, a young man who has to inherit his intimidating father Giovanni’s empire after the older man’s sudden death in 1429. The show cast Hollywood heavyweight Dustin Hoffman in the role of Giovanni, almost to emphasize how his legacy loomed over Cosimo’s life.

While the series was a minor hit on American Netflix, Medici: Masters of Florence was a massive hit abroad, most notably in Italy. And so, a second series was commissioned, but this one would focus on a far more famous Medici: Lorenzo the Magnificent. Medici: The Magnificent opens in 1470, just as Lorenzo and his siblings are attempting to maintain their family’s hold on Florentine culture. The season deals mainly with the Medici family’s heated war with the Pazzi clan.

Medici: The Magnificent stars Daniel Sharman as Lorenzo de’Medici, Bradley James as his younger brother Giuliano, and Sean Bean as Jacopo de’ Pazzi. The only returning cast member from Medici: Masters of Florence is Annabel Scholey, who plays the older version of her character Contessina.

But let’s circle back to Sean Bean. In a weird twist, the Medici series is giving us an “almost” Game of Thrones reunion. Sean Bean played Ned Stark in the first season of the smash HBO series, and Richard Madden played his eldest son Robb. Madden doesn’t appear in this new season with Bean, but he is credited as an Executive Producer. So maybe Medici is the show where Starks go when they die? We’ll have to wait and see if Michelle Fairley (aka Catelyn Stark) or Art Parkinson (aka Rickon Stark) make an appearance in the upcoming third installment of the Medici series.

The Medici 3 arrives tonight on Rai1 at 9:25 pm with the first episode of the new season for a series of events co-produced by Lux Vide in collaboration with Rai Fiction, Big Light Productions and Altice Group. There will be a total of 8 episodes that will make up the first 4 evenings, broadcast on Mondays and Tuesdays.
The plot of the first episode , entitled "Survival", takes us a few months after the Pazzi Conspiracy, Lorenzo is still animated by the spirit of revenge. There is a long-distance conflict between Lorenzo and Pope Sixtus IV; this conflict tries to take advantage of the cruel Count Riario - the last of the conspirators who remained alive - who tries to start the war between Florence and Rome. While the Medici family learns of the existence of Giulio, the illegitimate son of the deceased Giuliano, a Dominican friar arrives in Florence who seems able to read in the heart of Lorenzo: Girolamo Savonarola.
