Kilkenny based animated studio misses out on Golden Globe
Quote
Kilkenny’s Cartoon Saloon was pipped to the post for a Golden Globe last night.
Wolfwalkers had been shortlisted in the Best Motion Picture (Animated) category and hopes were high it would take the title.
However, that went to Disney’s Soul.

Kilkenny's Cartoon Saloon celebrate Oscar nomination for hit animated film Wolfwalkers
Quote
The Irish film studio behind the critically acclaimed animated film Wolfwalkers have toasted their latest success after bagging an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature.
Cartoon Saloon, which is based in Kilkenny, was founded in 1999 by art-school friends Paul Young, Tomm Moore and Nora Twomey.

The animation studio snagged its first Oscar nomination a decade ago with The Secret of Kells, with their following two feature films - Song of the Sea and The Breadwinner - both going on to become animated feature Oscar nominees.

The studio has kept up their incredible success streak, with their latest film, Wolfwalkers, picking up a nomination in the Animated Feature Film category when this year's nominees were announced this afternoon.

Irish animation Wolfwalkers misses out on BAFTA to Soul
Quote
Irish animation Wolfwalkers, from Kilkenny's Cartoon Saloon, has missed out on the Animated Film BAFTA to Pixar's Soul.

The second ceremony for this year's Bafta film awards has kicked off at the Royal Albert Hall.

A handful of presenters are in attendance this year, with winners and nominees accepting their awards virtually.

‘Wolfwalkers’ Directors On Strong Female Leads And Landing Sean Bean – Contenders Film: The Nominees
Quote
“The heart of the movie became these two little girls, representing two different views of femininity and attitudes towards females in that time period,” Wolfwalkers co-director and producer Tomm Moore said of the characters of Robyn Goodfellowe and Mebh Óg MacTíre in the Apple TV+ Oscar-nominated animated film. “I think it has a lot of resonance for little girls today — I hope so anyway.”

Moore’s comments came during Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees awards-season virtual event, where he was joined by co-director Ross Stewart and producer Nora Twoney.

Nominated this year for Best Animated Feature and with voice-overs from the likes of Sean Bean and Simon McBurney, Apple Original Films’ Wolfwalkers debuted at the 2020 Toronto Film Festival and premiered on the streaming service December 11. Mixing real history based on the 17th century reign of English Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell, some fantasy, those strong female leads and some amazing aesthetics, the hand-drawn animation is that rare beast that spans the ages and the generations, in more ways than one.

And it has been able to find an even greater audience thanks to its presence on Apple TV+.

“We’re an independent studio and we’ve always had difficulty making sure that our films are seen,” said Twoney of the advantage of Wolfwalkers being on Apple’s streaming platform. “You know, we’re good at making films, but getting them seen is a whole different thing. So, it’s been incredible the exposure we’ve gotten with this film because of Apple; [it] has been absolutely transformative for us.”

This is actually the third film in team’s self-described “Irish folklore trilogy” to be nominated for an Oscar. Back in 2010, the Moore- and Twoney-directed The Secret of Kells was up for Best Animated Feature. In 2015, Moore helmed Song of the Sea which also was nominated in the category.

This time around, Wolfwalkers certainly has extra bite with the thespian who portrayed Game of Thrones’ onetime King of the North onboard. Bean provides the voice for the Bill Goodfellowe, the cunning hunter and Robyn’s father.

“We were actually really really lucky that he said yes, because we had even designed Bill to look like Sean Bean from a couple of years before,” Stewart admitted of the casting of the Yorkshire native. “So, if he had said no, we might have had to redesign the whole character.”
Fortunately for Team Wolfwalkers and the film’s audience, that didn’t turn out to be the case.

Check back later for video of the panel.

Will Wolfwalkers make it fifth time lucky at the Oscars for Cartoon Saloon?
Quote
It's this year’s David versus Goliath story at the Oscars. Pixar, the global powerhouse behind the Toy Story franchise, and industrious Kilkenny indie studio Cartoon Saloon are both in the running for Best Animated Feature.

Pixar is the favourite to take the glittering prize for their latest movie Soul, while the Marble City will be hoping to be covered in Oscar glory on Sunday night for their superb film Wolfwalkers.

They are very different movies, both thematically and in terms of production. Soul, made with a multi-million-dollar budget, is an existential odyssey about a New York jazz pianist who suddenly finds himself trapped in a strange land between Earth and the afterlife and it deals in some very Big Questions.

Wolfwalkers (budget: €10 million) is set in Kilkenny during the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland in the 17th century but it actually trades in issues of a far more tangible nature than Soul, such as the environment, the scars of history, and friendship against the odds.

As well as Soul, Wolfwalkers is also up against A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon, Onward, and Over the Moon for that prized Oscar on Sunday night.

It's a very different #academyawards this year for all the Nominees.
Keep an eye on our posts and stories later this evening where we'll be sharing some snippets from behind the scenes of getting ready for the #academyawards2021 in #Kilkenny and how the rest of the crew will be celebrating virtually.

Wolfwalkers: 'This year the Oscars are coming to Kilkenny'
Quote
There is no mistaking the pride in Tomm Moore's voice when asked about his animation studio's latest award nomination.

"This year the Oscars are coming to Kilkenny," he said.

It's the fifth time that Cartoon Saloon has been nominated for an Oscar.

But, so far, the gold statuette has eluded them.

Moore is co-founder of the Kilkenny-based operation that is now considered a key player on the animation world stage.

According to the County Down native, previous disappointments don't take the shine off the Oscar nod for the studio's most recent animated feature, Wolfwalkers.

Although he does admit the 2021 Academy Awards will be very different, as Covid-19 travel restrictions mean no glitzy trip to Hollywood for them.

"They're setting up an outside broadcast for us in front of Kilkenny Castle, so we'll be standing there from about 2am onwards," he said.

"It's always exciting to be part of such a big event, the trick is to take it reasonably lightly and enjoy it rather than take it too seriously."

Pixar's latest film, Soul, is the Irish studio's biggest competitor in the Best Animated Feature Film category in Sunday night's Oscars.

Soul features Pixar's first black protagonist, a jazz pianist who goes on an existential journey about the meaning of life. It fended off competition from Wolfwalkers to pick up a Bafta for Best Animated Film earlier this month.

But Moore is pretty relaxed about his chances of winning.

"Its always to hard to beat Disney and Pixar, it would be amazing if it happened, and who knows?

"We've been an underdog for a long time. My favourite film is Rocky you know, so I don't mind being the underdog."
